and_o under_o the_o peril_n of_o future_a or_o eternal_a death_n and_o also_o as_o remit_v and_o pardon_v sin_n as_o to_o future_a misery_n now_o in_o this_o high_a important_a sense_n this_o same_o law_n i_o mean_v material_o and_o in_o word_n the_o same_o must_v be_v consider_v both_o as_o a_o strict_a law_n and_o a_o gracious_a law_n or_o gospel_n what_o be_v a_o law_n but_o a_o signification_n of_o the_o rector_n will_n any_o way_n whatsoever_o oblige_v the_o subject_n to_o obedience_n by_o promise_a reward_n to_o the_o obedient_a and_o threaten_a punishment_n to_o the_o disobedient_a now_o in_o this_o very_a law_n in_o this_o high_a sense_n there_o be_v signification_n of_o his_o will_n both_o of_o a_o original_a strict_a law_n constitute_v eternal_a or_o future_a death_n due_a to_o every_o transgressor_n and_o of_o a_o remedying-law_n promise_v pardon_n to_o transgressor_n upon_o repentance_n and_o sincere_a obedience_n even_o as_o in_o the_o temporal_a pardon_n of_o he_o as_o to_o violent_a death_n upon_o a_o sacrifice_n if_o the_o law_n have_v not_o threaten_v death_n to_o he_o and_o also_o there_o be_v the_o remedying-law_n of_o pardon_n upon_o a_o sacrifice_n so_o here_o this_o consideration_n this_o very_a law_n give_v in_o the_o same_o word_n at_o sinai_n do_v reveal_v and_o signify_v these_o formally-distinct_a law_n first_o a_o strict_a exact_v of_o obedience_n all_o their_o life_n to_o all_o that_o he_o command_v under_o the_o peril_n of_o future_a death_n or_o wrath_n to_o come_v else_o as_o i_o have_v make_v apparent_a before_o there_o can_v be_v no_o pardon_n as_o to_o wrath_n to_o come_v or_o satisfaction_n by_o christ_n for_o wrath_n to_o come_v due_a by_o this_o law_n as_o to_o such_o sin_n and_o in_o this_o strict_a sense_n the_o apostle_n paul_n use_v the_o word_n law_n in_o the_o most_o of_o those_o place_n in_o dispute_n which_o the_o author_n chief_o insist_o on_o to_o reconcile_v they_o to_o st._n james_n viz._n the_o 3d._n and_o four_o chapter_n to_o the_o roman_n and_o gal._n 3._o v._n 10_o 11_o 12_o 13._o and_o in_o this_o sense_n the_o law_n be_v no_o type_n or_o shadow_n nor_o to_o vanish_v away_o but_o stand_v in_o force_n unto_o this_o day_n second_o also_o it_o do_v reveal_v that_o though_o they_o shall_v sometime_o during_o their_o life_n which_o be_v enough_o for_o condemnation_n by_o this_o law_n in_o the_o first_o sense_n fail_v in_o obedience_n to_o it_o yet_o their_o condition_n shall_v not_o be_v hopeless_a the_o punishment_n make_v due_a to_o they_o by_o this_o law_n shall_v be_v pardon_v and_o they_o shall_v yet_o enjoy_v the_o promise_a future_a life_n upon_o condition_n they_o do_v repent_v and_o sincere_o love_v and_o serve_v god_n endeavour_v obedience_n to_o all_o though_o a_o original_a strict_a law_n may_v real_o be_v and_o so_o may_v be_v reveal_v without_o a_o remedying-law_n yet_o it_o be_v a_o plain_a impossibility_n to_o reveal_v however_o so_o as_o offender_n shall_v be_v sensible_a of_o pardon_n and_o favour_n in_o it_o a_o remedying-law_n of_o pardon_n as_o this_o from_o mount_n sinai_n main_o as_o to_o the_o design_n of_o it_o be_v without_o reveal_v and_o make_v know_v the_o strict_a original-law_n for_o without_o know_v what_o the_o law_n in_o its_o rigour_n require_v from_o we_o and_o what_o it_o threaten_v to_o they_o that_o fail_v in_o the_o least_o we_o can_v be_v thankful_a for_o pardon_n offer_v on_o the_o gospel-term_n of_o sincerity_n nor_o know_v we_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o pardon_n so_o we_o be_v but_o sincere_a neither_o can_v this_o author_n possible_o reconcilable_o to_o his_o principle_n as_o you_o will_v see_v tell_v we_o how_o pardon_n be_v either_o needful_a to_o one_o or_o possible_o consistent_a with_o perform_v the_o gospel-condition_n since_o he_o maintain_v that_o sincere_a imperfect_a obedience_n or_o the_o gospel-condition_n be_v all_o that_o any_o law_n of_o god_n so_o much_o as_o of_o the_o law_n blameless_a that_o be_v he_o have_v live_v without_o fault_n so_o far_o as_o the_o law_n require_v in_o that_o sense_n wherein_o the_o most_o jew_n then_o and_o he_o himself_o former_o be_v so_o teach_v by_o his_o master_n gamaliel_n understand_v it_o viz._n in_o this_o external_a political_a sense_n and_o though_o he_o have_v former_o account_v that_o perfect_a obedience_n to_o the_o law_n or_o however_o all_o require_v to_o his_o salvation_n yet_o now_o he_o look_v upon_o such_o righteousness_n as_o insignificant_a as_o to_o future_a salvation_n and_o understand_v also_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o the_o apostle_n paul_n often_o use_v the_o word_n the_o law_n in_o this_o political_a sense_n though_o it_o be_v apparent_a he_o do_v not_o so_o when_o he_o deny_v justification_n by_o the_o law_n as_o to_o future-life_n by_o reason_n of_o man_n sinfulness_n as_o it_o be_v apparent_a he_o do_v in_o those_o place_n that_o seem_v opposite_a to_o st._n james_n and_o this_o author_n also_o confess_v it_o for_o man_n sinfulness_n can_v not_o possible_o be_v any_o reason_n why_o man_n be_v not_o justify_v as_o to_o future-life_n by_o the_o law_n in_o that_o political_a sense_n wherein_o it_o neither_o promise_a future-life_n nor_o threaten_v future_a death_n you_o must_v observe_v diligent_o as_o you_o desire_v to_o understand_v the_o apostle_n than_o be_v suitable_a for_o such_o a_o short_a discourse_n as_o i_o intend_v now_o to_o draw_v to_o a_o conclusion_n of_o this_o long_a digression_n design_v to_o help_v you_o to_o understand_v will_v never_o have_v contradict_v these_o opinion_n viz._n that_o man_n may_v have_v be_v justify_v have_v they_o do_v all_o the_o law_n of_o moses_n or_o nature_n require_v of_o they_o so_o as_o only_o wicked_a wilfulness_n which_o be_v the_o moral-impotency_n hinder_v they_o because_o neither_o those_o nor_o any_o other_o law_n
