author_n much_o of_o his_o judgement_n in_o the_o particulars_n here_o endeavour_v to_o be_v rectify_v other_o mistake_n of_o the_o apostle_n paul_n sense_n in_o deny_v justification_n by_o work_n 1._o his_o deny_v that_o there_o be_v any_o such_o thing_n as_o any_o law_n of_o god_n set_v the_o gospel_n itself_o aside_o make_v with_o mankind_n to_o this_o tenor_n or_o purport_n that_o he_o that_o do_v not_o every_o thing_n that_o god_n require_v of_o he_o whatsoever_o whether_o by_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n or_o the_o write_n of_o the_o old_a and_o new_a testament_n shall_v be_v subject_a to_o eternal_a misery_n or_o misery_n after_o this_o life_n and_o if_o man_n do_v all_o that_o god_n require_v of_o they_o by_o any_o way_n make_v his_o will_n know_v they_o shall_v be_v eternal_o happy_a or_o happy_a after_o this_o life_n but_o he_o think_v there_o be_v no_o law_n of_o god_n that_o threaten_v future_a misery_n or_o promise_n future_a happiness_n but_o only_o the_o gospel_n itself_o which_o be_v reveae_v in_o the_o old_a and_o new_a testament_n and_o that_o any_o law_n threaten_v future_a misery_n i_o mean_v after_o this_o life_n or_o promise_v future_a happiness_n be_v the_o gospel_n itself_o whereby_o man_n always_o be_v and_o be_v justify_v and_o save_v now_o to_o prove_v against_o this_o and_o that_o we_o must_v hold_v a_o law_n threaten_v future_a and_o eternal_a misery_n to_o all_o sinner_n and_o that_o all_o be_v condemn_v and_o none_o justify_v by_o this_o law_n and_o that_o this_o law_n be_v distinct_a and_o quite_o different_a from_o the_o gospel_n let_v these_o thing_n be_v consider_v 1._o if_o there_o be_v no_o law_n distinct_a from_o the_o gospel_n threaten_v future_a misery_n or_o misery_n after_o this_o life_n than_o christ_n never_o satisfy_v for_o the_o future_a misery_n that_o be_v threaten_v to_o any_o never_o die_v to_o free_v any_o from_o the_o wrath_n to_o come_v from_o the_o eternal_a or_o future_a curse_n of_o any_o such_o law_n but_o only_o from_o a_o temporal_a curse_n or_o curse_v of_o this_o life_n the_o consequence_n be_v apparent_a because_o he_o know_v not_o what_o he_o say_v that_o shall_v affirm_v that_o christ_n be_v make_v under_o the_o gospel_n to_o free_v we_o from_o the_o curse_n of_o the_o gospel_n for_o the_o gospel_n either_o threaten_v nothing_o as_o many_o hold_n but_o i_o judge_v they_o to_o err_v or_o which_o be_v apparent_a it_o threaten_v nothing_o except_o to_o they_o that_o perform_v not_o its_o condition_n viz._n to_o they_o that_o believe_v not_o and_o repent_v not_o in_o this_o life_n and_o it_o be_v certain_a christ_n die_v not_o to_o redeem_v final_o impenitent_a unbeliever_n christ_n satisfaction_n be_v make_v to_o the_o law_n and_o not_o to_o the_o gospel_n to_o free_v they_o that_o perform_v not_o the_o condition_n of_o the_o law_n viz._n perfect_a obedience_n but_o not_o to_o free_v they_o that_o perform_v not_o the_o condition_n of_o the_o gospel_n there_o be_v indeed_o a_o satisfaction_n make_v to_o the_o law_n that_o god_n may_v with_o justice_n and_o honour_n with_o safety_n to_o the_o law_n make_v this_o act_n of_o oblivion_n this_o law_n of_o grace_n the_o gospel_n therefore_o sure_o that_o first_o original-law_n do_v threaten_v eternal_a death_n to_o sinner_n and_o not_o mere_o temporal_a punishment_n else_o there_o can_v possible_o be_v any_o satisfaction_n for_o sin_n as_o to_o eternal_a punishment_n at_o all_o because_o the_o first_o law_n to_o which_o the_o satisfaction_n be_v make_v do_v not_o threaten_v it_o suppose_v a_o law_n in_o force_n that_o every_o felon_n shall_v be_v sell_v to_o work_v in_o the_o galley_n and_o the_o king_n son_n pay_v a_o great_a price_n and_o by_o this_o obtain_v of_o the_o first_o original_a law_n that_o be_v transgress_v by_o their_o felony_n do_v not_o threaten_v death_n but_o only_a slavery_n and_o you_o can_v say_v that_o the_o price_n be_v pay_v to_o free_v they_o from_o the_o penalty_n of_o the_o law_n of_o grace_n or_o act_n of_o oblivion_n which_o do_v threaten_v death_n but_o the_o satisfaction_n be_v make_v to_o the_o first_o law_n only_o though_o indeed_o the_o act_n of_o oblivion_n or_o remedying_a law_n be_v make_v upon_o the_o account_n of_o the_o price_n pay_v in_o satisfaction_n for_o the_o breach_n of_o the_o first_o law_n 2._o if_o there_o be_v no_o law_n threaten_v wrath_n to_o come_v or_o future_a misery_n but_o only_o the_o gospel_n itself_o than_o no_o man_n can_v be_v pardon_v or_o can_v need_v pardon_n by_o the_o gospel_n or_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n as_o to_o the_o wrath_n to_o come_v for_o the_o gospel_n afford_v no_o pardon_n to_o its_o transgressor_n that_o be_v to_o man_n continue_v to_o death_n in_o impenitency_n and_o unbelief_n the_o gospel_n indeed_o afford_v pardon_n to_o transgressor_n of_o the_o law_n yea_o and_o to_o transgressor_n of_o the_o command_v of_o the_o new_a testament_n so_o far_o as_o they_o be_v transgression_n of_o the_o law_n and_o threaten_v by_o that_o general_a law_n curse_v be_v he_o that_o do_v not_o all_o any_o way_n reveal_v to_o be_v his_o duty_n provide_v they_o perform_v the_o gospel-condition_n but_o the_o gospel_n afford_v no_o pardon_n at_o all_o to_o they_o that_o fall_v under_o its_o curse_n by_o not_o perform_v the_o gospel-condition_n suppose_v a_o law_n make_v threaten_v every_o felon_n with_o death_n and_o suppose_v a_o conditional_a act_n of_o oblivion_n or_o remedy_v law_n make_v that_o if_o the_o felon_n read_v he_o shall_v not_o die_v
moses_n and_o that_o in_o so_o do_v in_o exclude_v they_o he_o do_v also_o reject_v the_o corrupt_a interpretation_n or_o opinion_n which_o the_o scribe_n and_o pharisee_n have_v fasten_v on_o this_o law_n or_o add_v to_o it_o and_o also_o that_o the_o apostle_n though_o speak_v little_a about_o it_o and_o on_o the_o high_a do_v implicit_o affirm_v that_o work_v do_v according_a to_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n and_o proceed_v from_o the_o strength_n of_o nature_n do_v avail_v nothing_o to_o salvation_n chap._n 7._o he_o tell_v we_o what_o work_v of_o the_o law_n of_o moses_n in_o these_o come_v only_o from_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n make_v in_o the_o blood_n of_o the_o mediator_n so_o that_o if_o you_o respect_v the_o mosaic-covenant_n even_o the_o work_n of_o the_o moral-law_n be_v together_o to_o be_v exclude_v from_o justification_n and_o be_v indeed_o exclude_v by_o the_o apostle_n i_o know_v you_o be_v at_o a_o loss_n about_o the_o author_n meaning_n what_o he_o mean_v by_o this_o mosaic-covenant_n that_o no_o man_n can_v be_v justify_v by_o as_o to_o future_a life_n though_o free_a all_o sin_n and_o perfect_o obey_v the_o moral-law_n because_o this_o mosaic-covenant_n promise_v no_o justification_n as_o to_o eternal_a life_n upon_o any_o term_n whatsoever_o now_o because_o you_o will_v not_o understand_v what_o he_o say_v here_o on_o the_o two_o argument_n he_o bring_v in_o the_o next_o word_n which_o he_o pretend_v be_v only_o the_o apostle_n argument_n against_o justification_n by_o this_o mosaic-covenant_n and_o that_o this_o be_v all_o the_o law_n and_o covenant_n that_o the_o apostle_n prove_v against_o justification_n by_o i_o will_v bring_v together_o here_o all_o that_o he_o say_v to_o tell_v we_o what_o he_o mean_v by_o the_o mosaic-covenant_n that_o there_o be_v no_o justification_n by_o as_o he_o say_v as_o to_o a_o future_a life_n though_o there_o be_v as_o to_o this_o life_n and_o you_o will_v see_v it_o apparent_a that_o he_o mean_v by_o it_o only_o that_o law_n or_o law_n which_o i_o before_o cite_v out_o of_o he_o by_o the_o name_n of_o a_o original-law_n and_o remedying-law_n which_o threaten_v a_o violent_a temporal_a death_n to_o the_o transgressor_n of_o the_o law_n and_o promise_v upon_o offer_v a_o sacrifice_n they_o shall_v escape_v such_o violent_a temporal_a death_n but_o promise_v nothing_o of_o happiness_n in_o a_o future_a life_n if_o they_o offer_v such_o sacrifice_n or_o pardon_v of_o those_o sin_n as_o to_o a_o future_a life_n he_o apparent_o either_o mean_v this_o remedying-law_n only_o or_o both_o together_o the_o original-law_n as_o it_o threaten_v a_o violent_a temporal_a death_n and_o the_o remedying-law_n free_v from_o a_o violent_a temporal_a death_n upon_o the_o death_n of_o say_v it_o promise_v no_o eternal_a life-justification_n to_o any_o whatsoever_o though_o sinless_a and_o perfect_o keep_v the_o law_n pag._n 208._o the_o promise_n and_o threaten_n of_o the_o law_n be_v only_o temporal_a and_o earthly_a pag._n 210._o and_o the_o precept_n do_v wonderful_o accord_v with_o the_o promise_n pag._n 212._o he_o speak_v large_o to_o prove_v this_o the_o apostle_n do_v man_n be_v or_o ever_o be_v condemn_v by_o the_o law_n as_o to_o eternal_a condemnation_n in_o any_o sense_n wherein_o the_o law_n be_v distinct_a from_o the_o gospel_n and_o that_o christ_n never_o satisfy_v for_o the_o breach_n of_o any_o law_n different_a from_o the_o gospel_n that_o threaten_v future_a death_n much_o less_o for_o the_o breach_n of_o any_o law_n that_o require_v spiritual_a already_o even_o in_o the_o begin_n of_o this_o discourse_n show_v both_o the_o inevitableness_n and_o absurdity_n of_o these_o consequence_n yet_o because_o many_o maintain_v this_o opinion_n of_o the_o author_n for_o substance_n viz._n that_o the_o promise_n and_o threat_n of_o the_o law_n be_v only_o temporal_a and_o earthly_a and_o so_o can_v not_o work_v in_o man_n true_a piety_n as_o do_v he_o meditate_v day_n and_o night_n psal_n 19_o 7._o the_o law_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v perfect_a convert_v the_o soul_n the_o testimony_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v sure_a make_v wise_a the_o simple_a he_o mean_v not_o only_o wise_a for_o this_o world_n ver_fw-la 8._o the_o statute_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v right_a rejoice_v the_o heart_n the_o commandment_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v pure_a satisfactory_o or_o true_o of_o they_o and_o i_o have_v much_o confidence_n that_o none_o can_v give_v any_o true_a tolerable_a interpretation_n of_o such_o passage_n of_o the_o apostle_n use_v in_o danger_n and_o inconsistency_n of_o such_o opinion_n as_o these_o letter_n of_o the_o doctor_n be_v be_v write_v to_o maintain_v though_o i_o live_v obscure_o have_v not_o see_v those_o letter_n doubt_v not_o but_o there_o be_v many_o who_o ability_n and_o circumstance_n make_v they_o far_o more_o fit_a willing_a to_o undertake_v it_o and_o save_v the_o labour_n of_o my_o weak_a endeavour_n but_o now_o to_o attend_v the_o author_n after_o this_o large_a digression_n who_o still_o go_v on_o to_o give_v the_o meaning_n of_o rom._n 4._o the_o apostle_n also_o in_o this_o his_o argumentation_n consider_v the_o former_a state_n and_o condition_n of_o the_o person_n viz._n of_o abraham_n to_o who_o this_o faith_n be_v impute_v for_o righteousness_n he_o be_v ungodly_a and_o guilty_a of_o grievous_a sin_n and_o therefore_o the_o apostle_n say_v emphatical_o that_o abraham_n believe_v in_o he_o who_o justifi_v one_o ungodly_a by_o that_o imply_v that_o abraham_n before_o the_o divine_a vocation_n be_v so_o far_o from_o deserve_v any_o thing_n from_o god_n by_o any_o good_a work_n that_o on_o the_o contrary_a he_o be_v guilty_a of_o the_o great_a sin_n so_o that_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n be_v wonderful_a both_o that_o he_o have_v reveal_v himself_o in_o so_o singular_a a_o way_n to_o so_o great_a a_o sinner_n and_o have_v call_v he_o to_o his_o service_n and_o also_o that_o he_o not_o only_o bless_v with_o the_o pardon_n of_o his_o great_a sin_n but_o also_o reward_v with_o the_o great_a reward_n abraham_n believe_v he_o reveal_v himself_o to_o he_o but_o you_o will_v say_v what_o be_v this_o impiety_n of_o abraham_n before_o he_o be_v call_v i_o answer_v idolatry_n the_o great_a of_o impiety_n as_o the_o scripture_n itself_o plain_o testify_v joshu_n that_o when_o their_o ancestor_n viz._n the_o grandfather_n of_o israel_n both_o by_o his_o father_n and_o mother_n abraham_n and_o nahor_n live_v with_o their_o father_n in_o chaldea_n worship_v other_o god_n god_n of_o his_o mere_a mercy_n without_o any_o merit_n of_o he_o take_v abraham_n and_o give_v to_o he_o a_o heir_n and_o a_o inheritance_n also_o the_o apostle_n seem_v in_o these_o word_n of_o justify_v the_o ungodly_a by_o a_o tacit_n indeed_o but_o yet_o by_o a_o strong_a argument_n to_o check_v the_o arrogancy_n of_o the_o jew_n who_o do_v abhor_v the_o sinful_a and_o idolatrous_a gentile_n gal._n 2._o 15._o tho_o convert_v to_o the_o true_a god_n by_o faith_n in_o christ_n and_o repentance_n and_o new_a obedience_n and_o will_v by_o no_o mean_n admit_v they_o to_o the_o favour_n of_o justification_n unless_o approve_v by_o a_o long_a and_o continue_a work_v or_o at_o least_o purge_v by_o circumcision_n and_o sacrifice_n for_o the_o apostle_n show_v in_o these_o word_n that_o abraham_n their_o father_n and_o so_o they_o in_o he_o be_v call_v in_o the_o same_o manner_n from_o idolatry_n and_o the_o worship_n of_o false_a god_n and_o be_v immediate_o after_o his_o belief_n of_o the_o promise_n and_o obedience_n give_v to_o the_o divine_a vocation_n yea_o before_o he_o be_v circumcise_a as_o be_v a_o little-aft_a show_v accept_v of_o god_n who_o will_v not_o here_o admire_v the_o divine_a wit_n of_o the_o apostle_n furthermore_o this_o belong_v to_o all_o justify_v since_o there_o be_v none_o that_o be_v not_o guilty_a of_o heinous_a sin_n before_o grace_n receive_v &_o so_o who_o do_v not_o need_v pardon_n and_o divine_a remission_n which_o the_o apostle_n well_o prove_v by_o a_o testimony_n out_o of_o david_n ver_fw-la 6_o 7_o 8._o and_o afterward_o the_o apostle_n pass_v to_o the_o controversy_n concern_v circumcision_n ver_fw-la 9_o the_o author_n here_o indeed_o give_v the_o true_a sense_n of_o many_o verse_n in_o this_o chapter_n rom._n 4._o but_o the_o fault_n be_v he_o feign_v the_o apostle_n to_o bring_v they_o in_o desultory_o or_o as_o rope_n of_o sand_n without_o any_o coherence_n as_o when_o he_o say_v the_o apostle_n also_o consider_v the_o former_a state_n of_o abraham_n whereas_o the_o apostle_n in_o this_o chapter_n bring_v it_o in_o argumentative_o and_o have_v the_o author_n give_v a_o right_a interpretation_n of_o the_o verse_n before_o he_o may_v ready_o have_v see_v how_o this_o of_o abraham_n be_v ungodly_a come_v in_o most_o rational_o to_o prove_v that_o abraham_n be_v not_o justify_v by_o work_n but_o by_o righteousness_n impute_v to_o he_o and_o that_o his_o justification_n be_v of_o grace_n and_o not_o of_o debt_n so_o whereas_o he_o tell_v we_o that_o the_o apostle_n do_v afterward_o viz._n verse_n 9_o pass_v to_o the_o controversy_n of_o circumcision_n there_o be_v no_o pass_v to_o a_o new_a controversy_n but_o the_o apostle_n there_o draw_v a_o argument_n from_o this_o chapter_n tend_v to_o reconcile_v the_o two_o apostle_n hence_o there_o clear_o shine_v forth_o a_o agreement_n between_o james_n and_o paul_n when_o from_o the_o same_o example_n of_o abraham_n one_o conclude_v that_o a_o man_n be_v justify_v without_o work_n the_o other_o by_o work_n viz._n paul_n consider_v abraham_n according_a to_o the_o flesh_n
