make_v for_o the_o righteous_a therefore_o he_o speak_v in_o the_o singular_a number_n there_o be_v a_o second_o kind_n of_o interpreter_n and_o they_o do_v not_o make_v this_o speak_v of_o the_o righteous_a man_n and_o so_o to_o all_o the_o godly_a under_o the_o old_a testament_n and_o the_o person_n who_o be_v oppose_v to_o the_o righteous_a man_n be_v such_o who_o transgress_v the_o moral_a law_n other_o that_o do_v understand_v it_o of_o the_o moral_a law_n apply_v it_o to_o the_o repetition_n and_o renovation_n of_o it_o by_o moses_n for_o the_o law_n be_v at_o first_o make_v to_o adam_n upon_o his_o fall_n wickedness_n by_o degree_n do_v arise_v to_o such_o a_o height_n that_o the_o law_n be_v add_v because_o of_o transgression_n as_o paul_n speak_v but_o we_o may_v that_o be_v not_o red_a yet_o by_o reason_n of_o the_o glass_n it_o look_v all_o red_a so_o though_o we_o be_v filthy_a in_o ourselves_o yet_o all_o that_o god_n see_v in_o we_o look_n as_o christ_n not_o only_o in_o justification_n but_o sanctification_n this_o be_v to_o be_v confute_v hereafter_o three_o let_v we_o take_v notice_n how_o the_o antinomian_n explain_v this_o place_n and_o what_o he_o mean_v by_o this_o text._n the_o old_a antinomian_n islebius_n agricola_n state_n the_o question_n thus_o whether_o the_o law_n be_v to_o a_o righteous_a man_n as_o a_o teacher_n ruler_n to_o the_o law_n and_o not_o that_o to_o he_o but_o whether_o when_o these_o thing_n be_v do_v they_o be_v do_v by_o a_o godly_a man_n admonish_v instruct_v and_o command_v by_o the_o law_n of_o god_n and_o this_o they_o deny_v as_o for_o the_o late_a antinomian_n he_o speak_v very_o uncertain_o and_o inconsistent_o sometime_o he_o grant_v the_o law_n be_v a_o rule_n but_o very_o hardly_o and_o seldom_o then_o present_o kick_v all_o down_o again_o for_o
it_o convert_v the_o soul_n and_o we_o may_v add_v those_o place_n of_o enlighten_v the_o mind_n that_o they_o cleanse_v a_o man_n way_n etc._n etc._n he_o make_v this_o question_n whether_o the_o law_n do_v ever_o obtain_v such_o effect_n or_o no_o and_o he_o answer_v affirmative_o that_o it_o do_v but_o then_o when_o it_o be_v write_v not_o in_o table_n but_o in_o the_o heart_n and_o bowel_n for_o a_o three_o and_o last_o instance_n out_o of_o scripture_n in_o answer_v of_o 2._o which_o all_o be_v answer_v be_v from_o gal._n 3._o 2._o receive_v you_o the_o spirit_n by_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n or_o by_o the_o hear_n of_o faith_n that_o be_v of_o the_o gospel_n the_o doctrine_n of_o faith_n in_o the_o open_n of_o this_o text_n we_o must_v take_v heed_n of_o three_o error_n neither_o need_v we_o with_o other_o make_v these_o command_n appendix_n to_o the_o gospel_n but_o conclude_v thus_o that_o see_v faith_n and_o repentance_n have_v something_o initial_a in_o they_o and_o something_o consummative_a in_o they_o therefore_o they_o be_v both_o wrought_v by_o law_n and_o gospel_n also_o so_o that_o as_o they_o say_v there_o be_v a_o legal_a repentance_n and_o a_o evangelical_a so_o we_o may_v say_v there_o be_v a_o legal_a faith_n which_o consist_v in_o believe_v of_o the_o threaten_n &_o the_o terror_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o there_o be_v a_o evangelical_a faith_n which_o be_v in_o apply_v of_o christ_n in_o the_o promise_n so_o that_o legal_a faith_n and_o repentance_n may_v be_v call_v so_o initial_o and_o when_o it_o be_v evangelical_a it_o may_v be_v say_v to_o be_v consummate_a if_o therefore_o you_o ask_v whether_o faith_n and_o repentance_n be_v by_o the_o law_n or_o by_o the_o gospel_n i_o answer_v it_o be_v by_o both_o and_o that_o these_o must_v not_o be_v separate_v one_o from_o the_o other_o in_o the_o command_n of_o these_o duty_n hence_o four_a unbelief_n be_v a_o sin_n against_o the_o law_n as_o well_o as_o against_o gospel_n the_o gospel_n indeed_o the_o gospel_n that_o do_v manifest_a and_o declare_v the_o object_n of_o justify_v faith_n but_o the_o law_n condemn_v he_o that_o do_v not_o believe_v in_o he_o therefore_o moses_n and_o the_o law_n be_v say_v to_o bear_v witness_n of_o christ_n and_o to_o accuse_v the_o jew_n for_o refuse_v the_o messiah_n the_o law_n that_o require_v belief_n in_o whatsoever_o god_n shall_v reveal_v the_o gospel_n that_o make_v know_v christ_n and_o then_o the_o law_n be_v as_o it_o be_v enlighten_v by_o the_o gospel_n do_v fasten_v a_o command_n upon_o we_o to_o believe_v in_o christ_n this_o be_v true_a if_o you_o take_v the_o law_n strict_o and_o separate_o from_o moses_n his_o administration_n of_o it_o but_o if_o you_o take_v it_o large_o as_o it_o be_v deliver_v by_o moses_n than_o faith_n in_o christ_n be_v immediate_o command_v there_o though_o obscure_o because_o as_o be_v prove_v it_o be_v a_o covenant_n of_o grace_n you_o see_v then_o that_o as_o in_o the_o transfiguration_n there_o be_v christ_n and_o moses_n together_o in_o glory_n so_o likewise_o may_v the_o law_n and_o the_o gospel_n be_v together_o in_o their_o glory_n and_o it_o be_v through_o our_o folly_n when_o we_o make_v they_o practical_o to_o hinder_v one_o another_o though_o all_o this_o be_v true_a yet_o if_o the_o gospel_n be_v take_v strict_o it_o saviour_n be_v not_o a_o doctrine_n of_o repentance_n or_o holy_a work_n but_o a_o mere_a gracious_a promise_n of_o christ_n to_o the_o break_a heart_n for_o sin_n and_o do_v comprehend_v no_o more_o than_o the_o glad_a tiding_n of_o a_o saviour_n it_o be_v true_a learned_a man_n do_v sometime_o speak_v otherwise_o call_v faith_n and_o repentance_n the_o two_o evangelicall_n command_v but_o then_o they_o use_v the_o word_n more_o large_o for_o the_o doctrine_n of_o christ_n and_o the_o apostle_n but_o in_o a_o strict_a sense_n its_o only_a a_o promise_n of_o christ_n and_o his_o benefit_n and_o in_o this_o sense_n we_o may_v say_v the_o gospel_n do_v not_o terrify_v or_o accuse_v indeed_o there_o be_v woeful_a threaten_n to_o he_o that_o reject_v christ_n yea_o more_o severe_a then_o to_o he_o that_o refuse_v moses_n but_o this_o arise_v from_o the_o law_n join_v in_o practical_a use_n with_o the_o gospel_n and_o in_o this_o sense_n also_o it_o be_v say_v to_o be_v the_o savour_n of_o death_n unto_o many_o this_o arise_v not_o from_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o gospel_n but_o from_o the_o law_n that_o be_v enlighten_v by_o the_o gospel_n so_o that_o he_o be_v already_o condemn_v by_o the_o law_n for_o not_o believe_v in_o christ_n he_o need_v to_o be_v condemn_v again_o by_o the_o gospel_n if_o you_o say_v may_v not_o the_o suffering_n
add_v unto_o it_o and_o so_o it_o do_v necessary_o require_v justify_v faith_n for_o it_o can_v be_v conceive_v that_o when_o god_n command_v the_o people_n of_o israel_n by_o moses_n to_o worship_v he_o and_o to_o acknowledge_v he_o as_o their_o god_n but_o that_o his_o will_n be_v they_o shall_v believe_v on_o he_o as_o a_o father_n but_o more_o of_o this_o when_o we_o speak_v of_o the_o law_n as_o a_o covenant_n 2._o in_o love_n and_o this_o be_v so_o much_o command_v by_o the_o law_n that_o christ_n make_v the_o sum_n of_o the_o law_n to_o be_v in_o these_o two_o thing_n love_n love_v of_o god_n and_o of_o our_o neighbour_n therefore_o i_o wonder_v at_o the_o antinomian_a who_o be_v so_o apt_a to_o oppose_v the_o do_n of_o thing_n in_o love_n and_o do_v of_o they_o by_o the_o law_n together_o for_o do_v not_o the_o law_n of_o god_n command_v every_o duty_n to_o be_v in_o love_n to_o pray_v in_o love_n to_o god_n yea_o by_o the_o law_n we_o be_v to_o love_n god_n because_o he_o have_v give_v christ_n for_o we_o for_o the_o law_n command_v we_o to_o love_n god_n for_o whatsoever_o benefit_n he_o bestow_v upon_o we_o now_o if_o we_o be_v to_o love_v he_o for_o temporal_a benefit_n much_o more_o for_o spiritual_a it_o be_v true_a the_o dispensation_n of_o the_o law_n be_v in_o a_o terrible_a way_n and_o do_v gender_n to_o bondage_n but_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o law_n that_o be_v for_o love_n and_o the_o more_o any_o jew_n do_v any_o thing_n in_o love_n to_o god_n the_o more_o conformable_a he_o be_v to_o god_n law_n 4._o it_o require_v such_o a_o heavenly_a heart_n that_o we_o be_v to_o love_n god_n more_o than_o any_o thing_n else_o it_o do_v not_o only_o require_v love_n to_o god_n but_o also_o it_o command_v it_o in_o such_o a_o preeminency_n as_o general_a complaint_n that_o when_o they_o fast_v it_o be_v not_o to_o he_o even_o to_o he_o and_o so_o they_o howl_v because_o of_o their_o misery_n but_o not_o becase_n god_n be_v offend_v and_o thus_o david_n though_o he_o have_v receive_v the_o pardon_n of_o his_o sin_n yet_o how_o kind_o and_o spiritual_o do_v he_o mourn_v against_o thou_o thou_o only_o have_v i_o sin_v thus_o micah_n 7._o i_o will_v bear_v the_o indignation_n of_o the_o lord_n because_o i_o have_v sin_v against_o he_o what_o can_v be_v more_o spiritual_a 6._o it_o require_v joy_n and_o contentedness_n in_o he_o more_o
