recognition_n of_o a_o tyrant_n who_o government_n be_v arbitrary_a and_o be_v never_o own_v by_o the_o people_n in_o a_o free_a parliament_n who_o never_o take_v upon_o he_o the_o name_n of_o king_n the_o proper_a title_n of_o our_o sovereign_n in_o all_o our_o law_n under_o who_o violence_n and_o great_a oppression_n the_o kingdom_n in_o general_n groan_v for_o deliverance_n in_o the_o return_n of_o their_o rightful_a king_n and_o may_v laudable_o hazard_v their_o life_n and_o estate_n if_o there_o be_v any_o hope_n the_o accomplishment_n whereof_o by_o the_o wonderful_a providence_n in_o its_o due_a time_n be_v happy_o effect_v in_o the_o restauration_n of_o king_n charles_n the_o second_o but_o what_o be_v our_o case_n now_o be_v it_o not_o quite_o contrary_a we_o do_v acknowledge_v we_o be_v now_o rescue_v even_o from_o destruction_n as_o well_o as_o oppression_n and_o what_o can_v we_o look_v for_o upon_o a_o new_a change_n but_o a_o scene_n of_o blood_n the_o loss_n of_o all_o our_o civil_a and_o ecclesiastical_a liberty_n under_o french_a and_o popish_a slavery_n what_o can_v we_o hope_v for_o if_o the_o lion_n bereave_v of_o his_o whelp_n thirst_v after_o revenge_n be_v let_v loose_a upon_o we_o will_v not_o his_o rod_n that_o smart_v before_o be_v turn_v into_o a_o scorpion_n and_o the_o latter_a end_n of_o his_o tyranny_n be_v worse_o than_o the_o beginning_n 10._o bless_a be_v god_n there_o be_v a_o unclean_a spirit_n eject_v and_o our_o house_n be_v sweep_v and_o garnish_v be_v his_o return_n to_o be_v court_v or_o indeed_o to_o be_v hazard_v if_o he_o shall_v re-enter_v will_v he_o not_o pester_v we_o with_o more_o and_o worse_a devil_n if_o possible_a when_o in_o vain_a and_o too_o late_o perhaps_o we_o may_v wish_v we_o have_v never_o encourage_v or_o occasion_v our_o renew_a and_o aggravate_v misery_n it_o high_o concern_v we_o to_o do_v what_o we_o can_v to_o prevent_v it_o and_o i_o see_v no_o other_o way_n leave_v we_o to_o show_v our_o apprehension_n of_o the_o danger_n but_o by_o comfort_v the_o king_n who_o under_o god_n have_v dispossess_v we_o and_o who_o only_o under_o heaven_n be_v the_o visible_a instrument_n of_o our_o preservation_n from_o that_o last_o estate_n to_o use_v our_o saviour_n word_n that_o will_v be_v worse_o than_o the_o first_o which_o i_o hope_v we_o be_v yet_o sensible_a be_v bad_a enough_o and_o how_o we_o can_v do_v this_o without_o assure_v he_o of_o our_o grateful_a and_o cheerful_a allegiance_n and_o fidelity_n by_o take_v the_o oath_n i_o can_v see_v at_o least_o i_o doubt_v not_o but_o enough_o have_v be_v say_v to_o demonstrate_v the_o inexpediency_n of_o our_o continue_v to_o refuse_v it_o and_o consequent_o upon_o that_o argument_n a_o necessity_n of_o take_v it_o notwithstanding_o the_o objection_n of_o the_o reputation_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n for_o her_o singular_a loyalty_n 11._o to_o conclude_v i_o need_v not_o mind_v you_o since_o the_o three_o estate_n in_o parliament_n with_o the_o generality_n both_o of_o the_o gentry_n and_o clergy_n throughout_o the_o kingdom_n have_v leave_v you_o perhaps_o three_o or_o four_o in_o a_o county_n take_v one_o county_n with_o another_o that_o yet_o stand_v out_o i_o say_v i_o need_v not_o mind_v these_o very_a few_o in_o comparison_n how_o fit_o they_o take_v to_o themselves_o the_o name_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n or_o how_o likely_a a_o thing_n it_o be_v for_o they_o by_o scruple_v the_o oath_n to_o preserve_v her_o reputation_n of_o loyalty_n in_o their_o own_o sense_n let_v the_o time_n pass_v suffice_v that_o they_o have_v endeavour_v it_o so_o long_o as_o there_o be_v any_o hope_n to_o do_v it_o but_o now_o if_o the_o case_n be_v plain_o desperate_a it_o be_v time_n for_o they_o upon_o all_o the_o argument_n so_o many_o worthy_a man_n as_o have_v labour_v in_o print_n for_o their_o satisfaction_n to_o cry_v quarter_n and_o to_o yield_v to_o the_o prevail_a power_n i_o mean_v to_o come_v in_o and_o submit_v and_o give_v the_o require_a security_n thereof_o by_o take_v the_o oath_n of_o allegiance_n to_o king_n william_n and_o queen_n mary_n who_o god_n long_o preserve_v and_o prosper_v a_o appendix_n the_o objection_n from_o the_o word_n allegiance_n consider_v after_o i_o have_v put_v a_o end_n to_o my_o former_a discourse_n i_o hear_v of_o the_o follow_a objection_n object_n it_o be_v say_v that_o allegiance_n be_v the_o word_n in_o the_o new_a as_o well_o as_o in_o the_o old_a oath_n it_o seem_v it_o ought_v to_o be_v understand_v in_o the_o same_o latitude_n and_o sense_n in_o both_o then_o how_o can_v we_o safe_o swear_v allegiance_n to_o the_o present_a king_n and_o queen_n in_o the_o same_o sense_n in_o which_o we_o have_v swear_v allegiance_n to_o the_o former_a king_n while_o the_o former_a king_n be_v alive_a answ_n i_o hear_v this_o be_v the_o scruple_n of_o some_o ingenuous_a person_n for_o who_o sake_n i_o shall_v accommodate_v my_o answer_n to_o their_o own_o principle_n as_o near_o as_o i_o can_v first_o by_o show_v that_o those_o two_o oath_n though_o both_o be_v call_v oath_n of_o allegiance_n yet_o they_o be_v not_o of_o the_o same_o latitude_n in_o the_o matter_n of_o they_o second_o that_o though_o in_o a_o great_a measure_n they_o be_v admit_v to_o have_v the_o same_o sense_n and_o though_o in_o that_o sense_n in_o which_o we_o have_v swear_v allegiance_n to_o the_o former_a king_n we_o be_v require_v to_o swear_v allegiance_n to_o the_o present_a king_n and_o queen_n yet_o we_o safe_o and_o honest_o do_v it_o 1._o for_o the_o first_o it_o be_v plain_a that_o the_o former_a oath_n though_o it_o be_v call_v the_o oath_n of_o allegiance_n yet_o it_o have_v more_o in_o the_o matter_n of_o it_o than_o can_v be_v import_v in_o the_o word_n allegiance_n it_o have_v two_o manifest_a part_n of_o a_o different_a nature_n the_o first_o acknowledge_v the_o king_n just_a title_n to_o the_o crown_n as_o rightful_a king_n and_o be_v find_v in_o the_o form_n of_o a_o assertory_n oath_n the_o other_o be_v as_o plain_o promissory_a i_o will_v bear_v faith_n and_o true_a allegiance_n etc._n etc._n now_o though_o with_o respect_n to_o this_o promissory_a part_n of_o the_o old_a oath_n we_o shall_v grant_v that_o by_o the_o new_a oath_n we_o be_v to_o swear_v in_o the_o same_o word_n and_o in_o the_o same_o sense_n yet_o it_o be_v more_o than_o evident_a that_o these_o word_n can_v be_v intend_v to_o assert_v any_o thing_n about_o the_o title_n of_o the_o crown_n and_o in_o all_o likelihood_n the_o assertory_n part_n of_o the_o former_a oath_n be_v leave_v out_o on_o purpose_n in_o the_o new_a to_o avoid_v matter_n of_o scruple_n or_o offence_n yet_o it_o be_v confess_v that_o argument_n suffer_v but_o little_a in_o its_o strength_n if_o both_o these_o oath_n agree_v or_o be_v the_o same_o in_o any_o substantial_a matter_n while_o man_n doubt_v that_o the_o former_a oath_n do_v oblige_v they_o to_o bear_v allegiance_n to_o king_n james_n in_o the_o same_o sense_n in_o which_o we_o be_v require_v to_o take_v the_o new_a one_o it_o behoove_v i_o therefore_o now_o to_o prove_v the_o second_o thing_n propose_v viz._n that_o though_o allegiance_n have_v the_o same_o sense_n and_o meaning_n in_o both_o and_o we_o have_v before_o swear_v it_o to_o king_n james_n in_o that_o sense_n yet_o we_o may_v safe_o and_o honest_o swear_v to_o bear_v faith_n and_o true_a allegiance_n to_o king_n william_n and_o queen_n mary_n object_n the_o objection_n in_o short_a be_v this_o if_o allegiance_n swear_v to_o king_n james_n be_v due_a to_o he_o by_o virtue_n of_o our_o oath_n it_o can_v be_v due_a to_o king_n william_n and_o queen_n mary_n in_o the_o same_o sense_n it_o be_v due_a to_o king_n james_n answ_n the_o answer_n be_v as_o short_a for_o if_o allegiance_n be_v due_a to_o king_n william_n and_o queen_n mary_n in_o the_o same_o sense_n that_o we_o swear_v to_o king_n james_n then_o it_o be_v not_o due_a to_o king_n james_n though_o we_o so_o swear_v for_o our_o former_a oath_n can_v oblige_v we_o to_o king_n james_n to_o the_o injury_n of_o king_n william_n and_o queen_n mary_n it_o will_v then_o be_v a_o bond_n of_o iniquity_n we_o see_v the_o objection_n and_o answer_n stand_v both_o upon_o the_o same_o ground_n namely_o that_o obedience_n or_o allegiance_n can_v be_v due_a to_o two_o king_n in_o the_o same_o sense_n at_o once_o therefore_o if_o i_o prove_v that_o allegiance_n be_v due_a to_o the_o present_a king_n and_o queen_n it_o must_v be_v yield_v that_o our_o former_a oath_n to_o king_n james_n can_v oblige_v we_o to_o pay_v such_o allegiance_n to_o he_o my_o argument_n be_v this_o allegiance_n be_v due_a to_o the_o supreme_a power_n in_o be_v therefore_o it_o can_v be_v
prince_n of_o denmark_n some_o kind_n of_o right_n in_o and_o by_o his_o lady_n sol._n it_o seem_v to_o i_o he_o have_v but_o it_o be_v very_o evident_a that_o he_o consent_v and_o wave_v what_o right_o he_o may_v have_v as_o both_o the_o princess_n do_v they_o obj._n but_o the_o people_n of_o england_n seem_v to_o have_v a_o right_a to_o be_v govern_v by_o the_o next_o in_o blood_n of_o the_o royal_a family_n answ_n this_o too_o may_v be_v grant_v but_o the_o people_n of_o england_n in_o this_o sense_n be_v the_o lord_n and_o the_o representative_a body_n of_o the_o commons_o and_o have_v not_o these_o both_o consent_v to_o and_o transact_v the_o present_a establishment_n for_o themselves_o and_o we_o to_o conclude_v this_o upon_o the_o late_a demise_n nothing_o can_v bar_v the_o prince_n of_o orange_n from_o a_o just_a and_o immediate_a title_n to_o the_o crown_n of_o england_n but_o the_o right_n of_o his_o princess_n the_o right_a of_o the_o princess_n and_o in_o and_o by_o she_o of_o the_o prince_n of_o denmark_n and_o the_o right_n of_o the_o nation_n in_o these_o but_o all_o these_o bar_n be_v fair_o remove_v by_o the_o consent_n and_o desire_n of_o all_o party_n concern_v and_o none_o have_v leave_v they_o any_o cause_n to_o complain_v in_o that_o respect_n now_o i_o hope_v here_o be_v nothing_o do_v destructive_a of_o the_o hereditary_a monarchy_n nothing_o that_o can_v infer_v the_o government_n to_o be_v elective_a pure_o in_o the_o whole_a transaction_n much_o less_o so_o great_a a_o alteration_n in_o the_o nature_n of_o our_o government_n for_o the_o future_a what_o principle_n some_o go_v upon_o in_o our_o late_a change_n we_o need_v not_o guess_v so_o long_o as_o we_o find_v nothing_o evident_a either_o verbal_a by_o declaration_n of_o our_o governor_n or_o by_o any_o thing_n in_o the_o change_n itself_o but_o what_o be_v fair_o reconcileable_a to_o our_o ancient_a constitution_n we_o may_v without_o trouble_v ourselves_o with_o other_o man_n principle_n cheerful_o submit_v to_o the_o present_a government_n if_o we_o have_v no_o more_o to_o object_n but_o that_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o government_n be_v alter_v by_o the_o revolution_n a_o evil_a surmise_n without_o ground_n aught_o to_o be_v lay_v aside_o chap_n iv._o of_o vacancy_n and_o the_o suppose_a interregnum_fw-la thereupon_o by_o the_o late_a king_n abdication_n we_o be_v thus_o lead_v to_o the_o second_o great_a exception_n which_o be_v this_o it_o be_v delare_v by_o the_o lord_n and_o commons_o in_o the_o convention_n that_o the_o late_a k._n james_n the_o second_o have_v abdicate_v the_o government_n the_o throne_n thereby_o be_v vacant_a consequent_o a_o interregnum_fw-la be_v admit_v or_o suppose_v contrary_a to_o the_o ancient_a and_o know_a maxim_n that_o in_o the_o government_n of_o this_o kingdom_n there_o be_v no_o interregnum_fw-la for_o answer_v hereunto_o i_o hold_v myself_o oblige_v to_o do_v two_o thing_n first_o to_o consider_v how_o and_o in_o what_o sense_n the_o late_a king_n abdicate_v the_o government_n this_o may_v justify_v the_o fill_v the_o throne_n with_o the_o the_o present_a king_n and_o queen_n 2_o to_o show_v that_o there_o have_v be_v nothing_o say_v or_o do_v by_o the_o convention_n as_o such_o that_o have_v declare_v a_o vacancy_n in_o the_o throne_n in_o that_o full_a and_o absolute_a sense_n as_o may_v infer_v a_o interregnum_fw-la in_o the_o true_a meaning_n of_o the_o word_n and_o thus_o the_o present_a government_n will_v be_v vindicate_v and_o reconcile_v with_o the_o ancient_a and_o this_o great_a exception_n i_o hope_v full_o satisfy_v and_o this_o methinks_v i_o be_o strict_o tie_v to_o by_o my_o last_o discourse_n of_o hereditary_a monarchy_n as_o will_v present_o appear_v more_o plain_o chap._n v._o of_o abdication_n for_o the_o first_o that_o the_o late_a king_n do_v real_o abdicate_v the_o government_n have_v be_v so_o full_o speak_v to_o by_o other_o that_o i_o need_v not_o much_o labour_n in_o the_o proof_n of_o it_o my_o chief_a intention_n be_v to_o reconcile_v the_o word_n to_o the_o notion_n of_o my_o brethren_n that_o be_v so_o much_o offend_v with_o it_o 1._o i_o desire_v they_o to_o consider_v it_o be_v a_o law-term_n and_o but_o seldom_o use_v among_o we_o why_o shall_v we_o not_o take_v the_o signification_n of_o it_o from_o the_o learned_a in_o that_o faculty_n 2._o but_o it_o be_v of_o great_a weight_n that_o the_o lord_n and_o commons_o differ_v about_o this_o word_n at_o their_o conference_n such_o a_o sense_n be_v beat_v out_o after_o much_o debate_n and_o argument_n upon_o the_o very_a same_o ground_n upon_o which_o many_o seem_v now_o offend_v with_o it_o that_o the_o wisdom_n of_o the_o nation_n in_o both_o house_n acquiesce_v in_o this_o word_n as_o the_o fit_a for_o the_o purpose_n by_o our_o election_n we_o intrust_v they_o with_o all_o we_o have_v and_o can_v we_o trust_v they_o with_o a_o word_n 3._o that_o which_o seem_v to_o reconcile_v the_o two_o house_n in_o the_o word_n abdicate_v be_v not_o the_o critical_a notion_n of_o the_o civilian_n but_o the_o explication_n of_o what_o be_v then_o to_o be_v mean_v by_o it_o which_o i_o be_o tell_v be_v happy_o effect_v by_o one_o who_o be_v a_o wonder_n in_o the_o lear_v of_o the_o law_n in_o these_o or_o the_o like_a word_n in_o which_o before_o they_o be_v agree_v that_o king_n james_n the_o second_o by_o go_v about_o to_o subvert_v the_o constitution_n by_o break_v the_o original_a coutract_n between_o king_n and_o people_n and_o by_o violate_v the_o fundamental_a law_n and_o withdraw_a himself_o out_o of_o the_o kingdom_n have_v thereby_o renounce_v to_o be_v a_o king_n according_a to_o the_o constitution_n by_o avow_v to_o govern_v by_o a_o despotic_a power_n unknown_a to_o the_o constitution_n at_o his_o coronation_n such_o a_o king_n to_o who_o the_o allegiance_n of_o a_o english_a subject_n be_v due_a and_o have_v set_v up_o another_o kind_n of_o domination_n which_o be_v to_o all_o intent_n a_o abdication_n or_o abandon_v his_o legal_a title_n as_o full_o as_o if_o he_o have_v do_v it_o by_o express_a word_n now_o if_o these_o thing_n be_v true_a as_o no_o body_n i_o think_v can_v deny_v and_o amount_v to_o a_o abdication_n in_o the_o just_a and_o public_o own_a and_o explain_v sense_n of_o the_o word_n how_o be_v it_o possible_a we_o shall_v any_o long_a scruple_n about_o it_o obj._n the_o mean_v of_o it_o then_o be_v that_o king_n james_n thus_o cease_v to_o be_v king_n but_o this_o be_v doubt_v sol._n but_o the_o body_n of_o the_o kingdom_n say_v he_o do_v and_o you_o will_v not_o say_v but_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o a_o king_n may_v cease_v to_o be_v so_o by_o a_o voluntary_a resignation_n in_o word_n or_o write_n which_o be_v formal_a abdication_n or_o as_o grotius_n seem_v to_o expound_v the_o word_n by_o manifest_a habere_fw-la pro_fw-la derelicto_fw-la 2._o now_o if_o the_o late_a king_n do_v as_o much_o by_o his_o action_n as_o a_o express_a abdication_n amount_v to_o do_v he_o not_o virtual_o and_o as_o real_o relinquish_v or_o abdicate_v the_o government_n as_o if_o he_o have_v in_o so_o many_o word_n renounce_v it_o 3._o and_o that_o he_o do_v so_o be_v too_o evident_a by_o what_o be_v before_o allege_v against_o he_o especial_o if_o we_o add_v his_o put_n down_o the_o ancient_a defence_n of_o the_o kingdom_n the_o militia_n and_o beginning_n to_o rule_v and_o defend_v his_o arbitrary_a government_n by_o a_o illegal_a stand_a army_n if_o when_o he_o voluntary_o depart_v from_o we_o he_o dismiss_v his_o judge_n throw_v away_o the_o broad-seal_n and_o disband_v and_o let_v loose_a upon_o we_o his_o illegal_a force_n and_o leave_v we_o in_o a_o perfect_a anarchy_n as_o be_v then_o apprehend_v even_o by_o such_o as_o now_o be_v offend_v with_o the_o word_n abdication_n the_o caution_n of_o the_o convention_n to_o avoid_v all_o colour_n of_o offence_n seem_v admirable_a if_o they_o have_v say_v the_o late_a king_n have_v forfeit_v the_o crown_n that_o will_v certain_o have_v more_o offend_v you_o and_o if_o they_o have_v depose_v he_o much_o more_o these_o be_v both_o avoid_v and_o it_o be_v only_o say_v he_o abdicate_v the_o government_n they_o do_v not_o only_o say_v it_o be_v his_o own_o fault_n but_o his_o own_o act._n obj._n but_o thus_o we_o make_v he_o felo_fw-la de_fw-la se_fw-la sol._n this_o seem_v to_o be_v no_o hard_a say_n it_o be_v plain_a though_o the_o king_n in_o his_o personal_a or_o natural_a capacity_n can_v as_o you_o think_v forfeit_v his_o life_n yet_o he_o may_v die_v or_o kill_v himself_o so_o in_o his_o politic_a capacity_n if_o we_o grant_v that_o the_o king_n can_v forfeit_v his_o government_n by_o male_a administration_n yet_o it_o be_v possible_a he_o may_v extinguish_v and_o destroy_v
