such_o melancholy_a thought_n as_o a_o future_a judgement_n they_o be_v so_o late_o come_v into_o the_o world_n and_o be_v big_a it_o may_v be_v with_o such_o great_a design_n of_o advance_v their_o fortune_n in_o it_o that_o they_o can_v think_v of_o go_v out_o of_o it_o very_o quick_o again_o they_o look_v upon_o judgement_n as_o they_o do_v upon_o the_o other_o world_n as_o a_o great_a way_n off_o and_o therefore_o it_o be_v not_o of_o a_o present_a concernment_n but_o may_v be_v think_v of_o time_n enough_o some_o year_n hence_o these_o be_v all_o very_a foolish_a reason_n but_o yet_o these_o or_o such_o like_a fallacy_n serve_v to_o impose_v upon_o young_a man_n or_o whatever_o their_o pretence_n be_v experience_n tell_v we_o that_o it_o be_v true_a in_o fact_n that_o they_o think_v very_o little_a of_o a_o judgement_n to_o come_v it_o be_v easy_a enough_o to_o show_v that_o these_o be_v no_o reason_n why_o they_o shall_v not_o think_v frequent_o of_o a_o future_a judgement_n how_o gay_a and_o pleasant_a soever_o they_o be_v and_o whatever_o their_o design_n be_v for_o this_o world_n the_o thought_n of_o judgement_n will_v not_o allay_v nor_o interrupt_v their_o pleasure_n while_o they_o preserve_v their_o innocence_n nothing_o can_v make_v the_o thought_n of_o judgement_n uneasy_a to_o they_o unless_o they_o resolve_v to_o take_v such_o liberty_n and_o pursue_v such_o design_n as_o they_o be_v afraid_a to_o be_v call_v to_o a_o account_n for_o and_o the_o reason_n why_o they_o shall_v think_v of_o judgement_n be_v to_o prevent_v this_o for_o if_o once_o they_o distract_v their_o mind_n with_o gild_n the_o thought_n of_o judgement_n will_v ever_o after_o be_v very_o uneasy_a to_o they_o and_o they_o must_v never_o think_v of_o it_o if_o they_o can_v help_v it_o the_o best_a way_n be_v to_o accustom_v our_o mind_n to_o the_o thought_n of_o judgement_n while_o we_o be_v innocent_a before_o we_o begin_v to_o be_v afraid_a to_o think_v of_o judgement_n and_o that_o will_v preserve_v our_o innocence_n and_o then_o the_o thought_n of_o judgement_n will_v never_o interrupt_v our_o pleasure_n but_o if_o we_o cast_v off_o the_o thought_n of_o judgement_n in_o youth_n which_o be_v the_o sure_a guard_n and_o preservative_n we_o have_v we_o shall_v by_o degree_n cast_v off_o the_o belief_n of_o it_o too_o when_o we_o lie_v aside_o the_o thought_n of_o judgement_n to_o take_v the_o great_a liberty_n to_o walk_v in_o the_o way_n of_o our_o heart_n and_o in_o the_o sight_n of_o our_o eye_n we_o contract_v such_o gild_n as_o make_v we_o afraid_a of_o judgement_n and_o very_o willing_a to_o believe_v that_o we_o shall_v never_o be_v judge_v and_o then_o we_o shall_v easy_o find_v some_o little_a argument_n or_o other_o to_o persuade_v we_o that_o there_o be_v no_o judgement_n that_o either_o there_o be_v no_o god_n or_o that_o he_o take_v no_o notice_n of_o humane_a action_n the_o thought_n of_o judgement_n be_v never_o uneasy_a and_o troublesome_a till_o man_n have_v scare_v and_o terrify_v their_o conscience_n with_o gild_n and_o therefore_o the_o certain_a way_n never_o to_o have_v the_o thought_n of_o judgement_n troublesome_a be_v to_o begin_v betimes_o to_o make_v it_o familiar_a to_o we_o and_o if_o we_o do_v so_o the_o thought_n of_o it_o will_v not_o prove_v melancholy_a and_o then_o we_o shall_v have_v no_o reason_n to_o lay_v they_o aside_o and_o it_o be_v a_o great_a mistake_n to_o imagine_v that_o there_o be_v no_o need_n to_o think_v of_o judgement_n but_o when_o it_o be_v near_o that_o we_o may_v secure_o lay_v aside_o the_o thought_n of_o it_o when_o it_o be_v at_o a_o distance_n for_o neither_o its_o be_v near_o nor_o its_o be_v at_o distance_n be_v any_o reason_n either_o to_o think_v or_o not_o to_o think_v of_o judgement_n but_o the_o true_a reason_n be_v to_o govern_v our_o life_n under_o the_o sense_n of_o a_o future_a account_n and_o that_o be_v a_o good_a reason_n equal_o good_a whether_o judgement_n be_v nigh_o at_o hand_n or_o a_o great_a way_n off_o for_o if_o we_o must_v give_v a_o account_n of_o what_o we_o do_v at_o seventeen_o or_o twenty_o year_n old_a and_o of_o what_o we_o do_v at_o fifty_o or_o sixty_o there_o be_v the_o same_o reason_n to_o think_v of_o judgement_n and_o to_o govern_v our_o life_n under_o the_o sense_n of_o it_o when_o we_o be_v but_o twenty_o as_o when_o we_o be_v threescore_o year_n old_a 2._o young_a man_n have_v great_a and_o constant_a occasion_n for_o the_o thought_n of_o judgement_n and_o that_o be_v a_o good_a reason_n why_o they_o shall_v think_v frequent_o and_o serious_o of_o it_o what_o but_o this_o can_v reduce_v that_o giddy_a age_n within_o bound_n and_o make_v they_o live_v by_o rule_n but_o if_o they_o will_v consider_v that_o they_o must_v be_v judge_v by_o rule_n by_o the_o law_n of_o the_o everlasting_a gospel_n this_o will_v do_v it_o this_o will_v convince_v they_o that_o they_o be_v not_o their_o own_o master_n that_o they_o be_v not_o at_o liberty_n to_o live_v as_o they_o list_v and_o to_o pursue_v every_o wild_a and_o rove_a fancy_n they_o may_v indeed_o do_v this_o if_o they_o please_v but_o they_o shall_v be_v judge_v for_o it_o if_o they_o do_v what_o but_o this_o can_v cool_v the_o heat_n of_o youth_n and_o conquer_v all_o the_o charm_n of_o flesh_n and_o sense_n but_o know_v say_v the_o wise_a man_n that_o for_o all_o these_o thing_n god_n will_v call_v thou_o to_o judgement_n and_o a_o man_n who_o be_v afraid_a of_o judgement_n who_o be_v afraid_a of_o lake_n of_o fire_n and_o brimstone_n who_o have_v the_o terrible_a prospect_n of_o eternal_a misery_n before_o he_o will_v have_v no_o great_a appetite_n to_o the_o choice_a sensuality_n he_o will_v freeze_v in_o the_o embrace_n of_o the_o most_o belove_a mistress_n and_o will_v tremble_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o his_o cup_n as_o bel●shazzar_n do_v when_o he_o see_v the_o handwriting_n upon_o the_o wall_n for_o who_o can_v bear_v the_o thought_n of_o be_v miserable_a for_o ever_o who_o with_o these_o thought_n about_o he_o can_v relish_v such_o fatal_a pleasure_n pleasure_n which_o will_v cost_v he_o his_o soul_n short_a and_o die_a and_o vanish_v pleasure_n which_o will_v end_v in_o eternal_a pain_n who_o will_v not_o be_v content_v to_o endure_v the_o pain_n of_o deny_v a_o appetite_n of_o subdue_a a_o domineer_a passion_n of_o pluck_v out_o a_o right_a eye_n and_o cut_v off_o a_o right_a hand_n rather_o than_o to_o be_v miserable_a for_o ever_o and_o when_o it_o be_v so_o impossible_a for_o young_a man_n to_o resist_v these_o flatter_a temptation_n without_o a_o present_a and_o awful_a sense_n of_o judgement_n can_v any_o thing_n more_o concern_v they_o then_o frequent_o to_o repeat_v these_o thought_n and_o to_o possess_v their_o imagination_n with_o the_o last_a impression_n and_o image_n of_o it_o that_o it_o may_v be_v always_o at_o hand_n and_o ready_a for_o use_v but_o this_o be_v necessary_a for_o all_o man_n as_o well_o as_o those_o who_o be_v young_a whoever_o take_v care_n of_o his_o soul_n aught_o to_o keep_v his_o eye_n upon_o a_o future_a judgement_n i_o grant_v it_o be_v so_o but_o there_o be_v some_o peculiar_a advantage_n which_o young_a man_n will_v reap_v by_o this_o if_o they_o begin_v this_o practice_n betimes_o 1_o sy_n for_o this_o will_v preserve_v their_o innocence_n and_o virtue_n and_o prevent_v the_o terror_n and_o agony_n of_o a_o late_a repentance_n all_o the_o kindness_n the_o thought_n of_o judgement_n can_v do_v to_o old_a sinner_n be_v to_o put_v a_o stop_n to_o they_o and_o to_o bring_v they_o to_o repentance_n and_o this_o be_v a_o very_a great_a kindness_n if_o it_o make_v they_o true_a penitent_n because_o it_o will_v save_v their_o soul_n and_o this_o be_v that_o which_o most_o sinner_n desire_v to_o enjoy_v the_o pleasure_n of_o sin_n as_o long_o as_o they_o can_v and_o to_o repent_v before_o they_o die_v and_o thus_o they_o think_v they_o adjust_a all_o interest_n gratify_v the_o flesh_n and_o save_v their_o soul_n at_o last_o but_o if_o these_o man_n ever_o prove_v true_a penitent_n they_o become_v very_o sensible_a of_o their_o mistake_n they_o wish_v then_o when_o it_o be_v too_o late_o that_o they_o have_v remember_v their_o creator_n in_o the_o day_n of_o their_o youth_n that_o they_o have_v preserve_v themselves_o from_o the_o pollution_n of_o flesh_n and_o sense_n they_o feel_v by_o sad_a experience_n what_o a_o evil_a and_o a_o bitter_a thing_n it_o be_v to_o sin_n against_o god_n how_o amaze_a the_o shame_n how_o sharp_a the_o sorrow_n of_o repentance_n be_v it_o be_v a_o very_a melancholy_n and_o disconsolate_a work_n when_o man_n draw_v near_o their_o end_n to_o look_v back_o upon_o a_o vicious_a and_o profligate_v life_n
be_v the_o sum_n of_o the_o law_n and_o the_o prophet_n the_o universal_a rule_n of_o moral_a justice_n and_o goodness_n which_o be_v to_o do_v that_o which_o be_v for_o the_o natural_a good_a of_o mankind_n whatever_o our_o sense_n and_o experience_n tell_v we_o be_v natural_o good_a and_o beneficial_a to_o ourselves_o which_o will_v be_v a_o very_a imperfect_a rule_n if_o there_o be_v not_o a_o inseparable_a connexion_n between_o moral_a and_o natural_a good_n the_o not_o observe_v this_o be_v the_o true_a reason_n why_o some_o man_n can_v form_v no_o notion_n at_o all_o of_o moral_a good_a or_o evil_a but_o think_v virtue_n and_o vice_n to_o be_v mere_a arbitrary_a notion_n which_o have_v no_o foundation_n in_o the_o nature_n of_o thing_n as_o indeed_o they_o can_v have_v none_o but_o only_o this_o that_o virtue_n be_v to_o love_n and_o choose_v and_o do_v that_o which_o have_v a_o natural_a good_a in_o it_o which_o be_v good_a to_o ourselves_o or_o other_o that_o vice_n be_v to_o love_v and_o choose_v and_o do_v that_o which_o have_v some_o natural_a evil_n in_o it_o or_o which_o be_v hurtful_a to_o ourselves_o or_o other_o as_o for_o instance_n charity_n which_o be_v one_o of_o the_o most_o excellent_a virtue_n of_o the_o christian_a life_n consist_v in_o do_v every_o thing_n which_o be_v for_o the_o good_a of_o man_n in_o feed_v the_o hungry_a clothe_v the_o naked_a relieve_v the_o injure_v and_o oppress_v the_o fatherless_a and_o the_o widow_n in_o direct_v advise_v assist_v comfort_a man_n in_o difficulty_n and_o distress_n in_o forgive_a injury_n conceal_v fault_n judge_v charitable_o and_o in_o all_o such_o other_o act_n of_o goodness_n as_o be_v great_o for_o the_o benefit_n of_o mankind_n whereas_o the_o contrary_a vice_n do_v all_o the_o contrary_a evil_n and_o mischief_n to_o the_o great_a hurt_n and_o injury_n of_o man_n and_o whoever_o consider_v this_o must_v confess_v that_o moral_a good_a and_o evil_a be_v as_o real_a a_o thing_n as_o natural_a good_a and_o evil_a be_v and_o i_o suppose_v no_o man_n who_o have_v his_o sense_n about_o he_o will_v deny_v that_o there_o be_v such_o a_o thing_n as_o natural_a good_a and_o evil_a as_o for_o instance_n pain_n and_o pleasure_n and_o then_o his_o same_o sense_n will_v in_o abundance_n of_o instance_n tell_v he_o the_o essential_a difference_n between_o moral_a good_a and_o evil_a on_o the_o other_o hand_n the_o true_a and_o only_a reason_n why_o man_n so_o vast_o differ_v in_o their_o notion_n of_o moral_a good_a and_o evil_a be_v because_o in_o many_o instance_n they_o be_v not_o agree_v what_o natural_a good_a and_o evil_a be_v some_o man_n call_v nothing_o good_a or_o evil_n but_o what_o be_v good_a or_o evil_n to_o their_o body_n such_o as_o pain_n and_o pleasure_n and_o the_o cause_n and_o instrument_n of_o they_o health_n and_o sickness_n riches_n and_o poverty_n and_o the_o like_a other_o think_v and_o with_o much_o great_a reason_n that_o we_o shall_v take_v our_o soul_n into_o the_o account_n too_o that_o whatever_o be_v for_o the_o ease_n and_o pleasure_n of_o our_o mind_n whatever_o adorn_v and_o perfect_v a_o reasonable_a nature_n be_v a_o natural_a good_a to_o man_n as_o wisdom_n and_o knowledge_n and_o regular_a and_o well-governed_a appetite_n and_o passion_n do_v and_o therefore_o these_o be_v the_o foundation_n of_o moral_a virtue_n too_o but_o whatever_o debase_v our_o nature_n and_o be_v a_o reproach_n to_o the_o reason_n and_o understanding_n of_o a_o man_n whatever_o thrust_v he_o down_o into_o the_o rank_n of_o brute_n creature_n and_o either_o disturb_v his_o ease_n or_o change_v the_o pleasure_n of_o a_o man_n for_o those_o of_o a_o beast_n be_v great_a natural_a evil_n too_o if_o the_o perfection_n and_o happiness_n of_o humane_a nature_n be_v a_o natural_a good_a and_o therefore_o to_o choose_v and_o to_o act_v such_o thing_n be_v moral_o evil_a this_o be_v enough_o to_o show_v what_o moral_a good_a and_o evil_a be_v that_o it_o have_v a_o necessary_a relation_n to_o natural_a good_a and_o evil_a and_o it_o be_v easy_a here_o to_o prove_v be_v it_o not_o too_o long_o a_o digression_n that_o all_o the_o law_n of_o the_o gospel_n do_v either_o command_v what_o be_v for_o the_o good_a and_o happiness_n of_o mankind_n of_o every_o private_a man_n and_o of_o public_a community_n or_o forbid_v such_o thing_n as_o be_v hurtful_a and_o prejudicial_a to_o they_o but_o my_o present_a design_n will_v not_o suffer_v i_o to_o straggle_v so_o far_o out_o of_o the_o way_n ii_o the_o second_o branch_n of_o this_o argument_n be_v that_o according_a to_o the_o ●eneral_a sense_n of_o mankind_n what_o be_v good_a ou●ht_n to_o be_v reward_v and_o what_o be_v wicked_a aught_o to_o be_v punish_v for_o the_o proof_n of_o this_o i_o shall_v appeal_v in_o the_o first_o place_n to_o all_o civilise_v nation_n who_o live_v under_o law_n and_o government_n for_o there_o be_v no_o such_o nation_n but_o think_v fit_a to_o restrain_v wickedness_n by_o a_o public_a vengeance_n on_o those_o who_o commit_v it_o indeed_o their_o law_n and_o punishment_n be_v not_o always_o the_o same_o nor_o do_v they_o all_o punish_v the_o same_o crime_n nor_o with_o the_o same_o punishment_n but_o all_o of_o they_o punish_v such_o crime_n as_o they_o think_v injurious_a to_o the_o public_a which_o be_v the_o principal_a concernment_n of_o civil_a government_n and_o inflict_v such_o penalty_n on_o they_o as_o they_o judge_v proportion_v to_o such_o crime_n or_o sufficient_a to_o restrain_v the_o commission_n of_o they_o some_o capital_a some_o pecuniary_a mulct_n confiscation_n of_o good_n loss_n of_o honour_n corporal_a punishment_n imprisonment_n banishment_n or_o some_o public_a mark_n of_o perpetual_a infamy_n which_o be_v a_o certain_a argument_n that_o the_o wisdom_n of_o all_o nation_n think_v it_o fit_a that_o wickedness_n shall_v be_v punish_v that_o those_o who_o do_v evil_a shall_v suffer_v evil_a and_o indeed_o all_o mankind_n be_v so_o sensible_a of_o this_o that_o there_o be_v not_o a_o great_a reproach_n to_o any_o government_n than_o the_o impunity_n of_o vice_n nor_o a_o great_a glory_n to_o it_o than_o the_o strict_a and_o equal_a administration_n of_o justice_n where_o public_a justice_n fail_v as_o it_o do_v in_o a_o great_a many_o instance_n we_o must_v next_o appeal_v to_o private_a revenge_n to_o understand_v what_o the_o sense_n of_o mankind_n be_v about_o the_o desert_n of_o sin_n for_o there_o be_v not_o a_o more_o natural_a nor_o more_o eager_a passion_n in_o humane_a nature_n all_o man_n natural_o desire_v to_o return_v the_o injury_n they_o suffer_v upon_o the_o head_n of_o those_o who_o do_v it_o and_o account_v it_o no_o injury_n but_o a_o great_a act_n of_o justice_n to_o do_v so_o in_o many_o nation_n some_o private_a injury_n have_v be_v leave_v to_o private_a revenge_n and_o the_o jewish_a law_n itself_o permit_v a_o retaliation_n of_o injury_n a_o eye_n for_o a_o eye_n and_o a_o tooth_n for_o a_o tooth_n though_o it_o do_v not_o permit_v the_o injure_a person_n to_o take_v this_o revenge_n himself_o but_o make_v the_o public_a magistrate_n the_o judge_n of_o it_o it_o may_v be_v you_o will_v wonder_v i_o shall_v appeal_v to_o the_o impatient_a thirst_n and_o appetite_n of_o revenge_n to_o prove_v the_o sense_n of_o mankind_n that_o sin_n ought_v to_o be_v punish_v when_o private_a revenge_n itself_o be_v a_o great_a evil_n and_o forbid_v by_o the_o gospel_n of_o our_o saviour_n but_o for_o all_o that_o revenge_n be_v a_o natural_a passion_n and_o speak_v the_o furious_a rage_n and_o language_n of_o nature_n that_o sin_n ought_v to_o be_v punish_v it_o be_v that_o passion_n in_o we_o which_o minister_v to_o punitive_a justice_n as_o a_o natural_a tenderness_n and_o compassion_n do_v to_o charity_n and_o therefore_o the_o passion_n itself_o be_v not_o sinful_a though_o the_o irregular_a exercise_n of_o it_o be_v it_o be_v implant_v in_o all_o mankind_n as_o the_o love_n of_o justice_n be_v but_o all_o man_n must_v not_o execute_v revenge_n no_o more_o than_o every_o man_n can_v administer_v justice_n where_o every_o man_n be_v a_o minister_n of_o justice_n he_o may_v execute_v his_o revenge_n too_o that_o be_v where_o there_o be_v no_o public_a law_n and_o government_n but_o when_o we_o be_v incorporate_v into_o civil_a society_n private_a revenge_n be_v supersede_v by_o public_a justice_n and_o to_o revenge_v ourselves_o be_v a_o offence_n against_o the_o state_n but_o this_o public_a justice_n be_v execute_v revenge_n still_o though_o without_o that_o partiality_n and_o passion_n which_o man_n betray_v in_o their_o own_o cause_n and_o though_o our_o saviour_n forbid_v private_a revenge_n it_o be_v not_o because_o sin_n do_v not_o deserve_v to_o be_v punish_v but_o to_o teach_v we_o those_o great_a christian_a virtue_n of_o patience_n
it_o become_v a_o wise_a and_o holy_a god_n to_o grant_v indulgence_n to_o vice_n be_v adultery_n fornication_n drunkenness_n gluttony_n profaneness_n irreligion_n no_o sin_n when_o commit_v by_o young_a man_n can_v any_o one_o give_v a_o reason_n why_o these_o sin_n shall_v damn_v a_o man_n of_o forty_o or_o fifty_o and_o be_v indulge_v in_o one_o of_o twenty_o do_v it_o become_v the_o wise_a
