these_o word_n be_v to_o be_v understand_v with_o reference_n what_o shall_v we_o say_v therefore_o in_o the_o 13_o verse_n where_o the_o apostle_n bring_v in_o god_n speak_v from_o the_o testimony_n of_o the_o prophet_n i_o have_v love_v jacob_n and_o hate_v esau_n and_o they_o be_v thus_o to_o be_v conceive_v what_o shall_v we_o say_v therefore_o see_v what_o conclusion_n we_o shall_v infer_v the_o comparison_n but_o herein_o they_o show_v their_o foolishness_n and_o weakness_n i_o answer_v we_o affirm_v no_o such_o matter_n either_o of_o the_o potter_n or_o of_o god_n that_o god_n make_v man_n to_o destroy_v he_o for_o what_o be_v it_o for_o god_n to_o destroy_v a_o man_n it_o be_v when_o he_o confound_v and_o turn_v man_n to_o nothing_o when_o he_o do_v annihilate_v and_o dissolve_v he_o to_o nothing_o but_o for_o god_n to_o find_v a_o man_n in_o his_o corruption_n to_o throw_v he_o into_o reprobation_n this_o be_v no_o destroy_v of_o a_o man_n again_o belove_v the_o potter_n be_v a_o creature_n and_o have_v receive_v a_o law_n from_o god_n his_o creator_n that_o he_o must_v carry_v himself_o towards_o his_o workmanship_n according_a to_o his_o law_n that_o he_o may_v prove_v profitable_a either_o to_o the_o church_n or_o to_o the_o commonwealth_n now_o this_o he_o do_v not_o if_o he_o make_v his_o pot_n with_o a_o purpose_n to_o break_v they_o then_o he_o live_v idle_o and_o be_v a_o vain_a foolish_a fellow_n but_o god_n the_o great_a lord_n of_o heaven_n and_o earth_n who_o have_v make_v the_o world_n he_o be_v not_o bind_v to_o any_o such_o law_n will_v the_o anabaptist_n in_o their_o foolery_n bring_v god_n under_o a_o law_n he_o be_v king_n of_o king_n and_o lord_n of_o lord_n and_o he_o have_v the_o prerogative_n royal_a and_o he_o be_v bind_v to_o no_o law_n no_o more_o to_o preserve_v they_o be_v make_v then_o to_o make_v they_o of_o nothing_o when_o they_o be_v not_o will_v they_o bring_v god_n under_o their_o girdle_n and_o under_o their_o law_n therefore_o notwithstanding_o their_o cavil_n the_o meaning_n remain_v a_o truth_n and_o it_o be_v as_o if_o the_o apostle_n have_v say_v word_n sense_n and_o meaning_n of_o the_o word_n have_v not_o god_n power_n and_o absolute_a lawful_a authority_n over_o man_n and_o as_o the_o potter_n have_v over_o the_o clay_n even_o out_o of_o the_o same_o lump_n and_o mass_n of_o mankind_n take_v general_o to_o appoint_v and_o to_o ordain_v one_o man_n to_o be_v his_o vessel_n of_o mercy_n in_o life_n and_o glory_n in_o heaven_n and_o to_o another_o to_o be_v a_o vessel_n of_o his_o wrath_n in_o the_o destruction_n of_o hell_n and_o thus_o much_o for_o the_o apostle_n meaning_n come_v we_o now_o to_o stand_v upon_o the_o word_n
now_o more_o particular_o we_o have_v in_o these_o two_o verse_n the_o 22._o and_o 23._o two_o thing_n lay_v before_o we_o first_o of_o all_o a_o description_n both_o of_o reprobate_n and_o of_o god_n elect._n and_o second_o that_o which_o the_o apostle_n affirm_v and_o put_v down_o concern_v reprobate_n these_o be_v the_o main_a general_a thing_n reprobate_n be_v thus_o describe_v by_o the_o apostle_n vessel_n of_o wrath_n and_o those_o prepare_v to_o destruction_n god_n elect_v be_v thus_o describe_v vessel_n of_o mercy_n prepare_v unto_o glory_n both_o vessel_n but_o the_o one_o of_o wrath_n and_o the_o other_o of_o mercy_n one_o prepare_v to_o destruction_n the_o other_o prepare_v to_o life_n and_o glory_n now_o the_o thing_n which_o the_o apostle_n put_v down_o concern_v reprobate_n be_v that_o god_n suffer_v they_o with_o long_a and_o much_o patience_n and_o that_o out_o of_o his_o own_o mere_a will_n and_o good_a pleasure_n what_o if_o god_n will_v suffer_v the_o vessel_n of_o wrath_n then_o the_o apostle_n amplifi_v this_o long-suffering_a of_o god_n to_o reprobate_n by_o the_o end_n of_o god_n long-suffering_a and_o patience_n namely_o in_o respect_n of_o reprobate_n themselves_o to_o declare_v and_o manifest_v his_o just_a wrath_n and_o vengeance_n upon_o they_o for_o the_o manifestation_n and_o declaration_n of_o his_o just_a power_n in_o punish_v of_o they_o then_o in_o respect_n of_o god_n elect_n that_o thereby_o he_o may_v show_v forth_o the_o riches_n of_o his_o glorious_a mercy_n to_o the_o elect_n in_o the_o 23._o verse_n that_o he_o may_v declare_v the_o riches_n of_o his_o mercy_n unto_o they_o that_o be_v prepare_v for_o glory_n so_o we_o have_v the_o general_a thing_n of_o these_o two_o verse_n come_v we_o now_o to_o the_o open_n of_o the_o sense_n of_o these_o two_o verse_n word_n explication_n of_o the_o word_n and_o first_o of_o all_o of_o the_o 22._o verse_n what_o if_o god_n will_v what_o if_o god_n be_v willing_a or_o it_o be_v his_o good_a pleasure_n and_o here_o something_o must_v be_v supply_v to_o make_v it_o a_o perfect_a sentence_n something_o must_v be_v conceive_v as_o a_o consequent_a what_o if_o it_o be_v the_o good_a will_n and_o pleasure_n of_o the_o lord_n to_o suffer_v the_o vessel_n of_o wrath_n to_o go_v to_o destruction_n with_o long_a patience_n what_o if_o god_n will_v so_o do_v what_o be_v that_o to_o thou_o this_o make_v it_o a_o perfect_a sentence_n what_o can_v thou_o accuse_v god_n of_o in_o this_o particular_a to_o show_v his_o wrath_n by_o wrath_n be_v here_o mean_v both_o god_n displeasure_n for_o and_o against_o sin_n and_o god_n vengeance_n for_o the_o same_o and_o god_n be_v say_v to_o manifest_v and_o show_v his_o wrath_n when_o he_o conceive_v just_a displeasure_n against_o man_n for_o their_o sin_n and_o do_v inflict_v just_a judgement_n and_o just_a punishment_n upon_o they_o for_o the_o same_o and_o to_o make_v his_o power_n know_v or_o as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o original_a 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d to_o make_v it_o possible_a to_o make_v it_o appear_v that_o it_o be_v possible_a and_o easy_a unto_o god_n that_o god_n have_v power_n to_o confront_v and_o bear_v down_o the_o reprobate_n be_v they_o never_o so_o mighty_a with_o a_o stroke_n of_o his_o hand_n and_o to_o send_v they_o soul_n and_o body_n to_o destruction_n as_o it_o be_v 1_o sam._n 2.10_o all_o the_o adversary_n of_o the_o lord_n shall_v perish_v they_o shall_v be_v destroy_v and_o confound_v suffer_v with_o long_a patience_n or_o with_o long-suffering_a for_o the_o word_n be_v the_o very_a same_o as_o in_o rom._n 2.4_o where_o the_o apostle_n say_v despise_v thou_o the_o patience_n and_o long-suffering_a of_o the_o lord_n now_o god_n long_a sufferance_n be_v his_o they_o a_o long_a time_n and_o keep_v back_o his_o wrath_n suffer_v they_o to_o go_v on_o and_o to_o add_v sin_n unto_o sin_n he_o spare_v they_o a_o long_a time_n when_o he_o may_v strike_v and_o they_o be_v fit_a receptacle_n and_o vessel_n to_o receive_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n and_o the_o arrow_n of_o his_o vengeance_n yet_o for_o the_o better_a understanding_n of_o this_o we_o must_v put_v here_o a_o difference_n between_o a_o vessel_n of_o wrath_n and_o a_o child_n of_o wrath_n these_o be_v not_o both_o one_o now_o a_o child_n of_o wrath_n for_o the_o present_a estate_n wrath_n difference_n between_o a_o vessel_n of_o wrath_n and_o a_o child_n of_o wrath_n may_v be_v a_o vessel_n of_o mercy_n so_o be_v paul_n so_o be_v the_o elect_a ephesian_n ephes_n 2.3_o we_o be_v by_o nature_n child_n of_o wrath_n as_o well_o as_o other_o but_o a_o vessel_n of_o wrath_n can_v become_v a_o vessel_n of_o mercy_n and_o of_o those_o speak_v our_o apostle_n here_o prepare_v to_o be_v speak_v in_o the_o passive_a prepare_v to_o destruction_n the_o other_o in_o the_o active_a he_o prepare_v they_o to_o glory_n but_o this_o be_v a_o needless_a distinction_n for_o this_o be_v to_o be_v expound_v by_o some_o other_o place_n of_o scripture_n as_o that_o in_o 1_o thess_n 5.9_o where_o vessel_n of_o wrath_n be_v say_v to_o be_v prepare_v and_o ordain_v of_o god_n the_o lord_n have_v in_o his_o eternal_a decree_n ordain_v and_o appoint_v they_o to_o everlasting_a shame_n and_o confusion_n as_o a_o potter_n make_v a_o vessel_n to_o receive_v excrement_n so_o these_o be_v appoint_v to_o destruction_n not_o as_o it_o be_v a_o misery_n of_o the_o creature_n but_o as_o it_o be_v a_o manifestation_n of_o his_o glory_n who_o be_v the_o creator_n which_o he_o will_v have_v make_v know_v to_o all_o the_o world_n so_o then_o thus_o conceive_v we_o the_o meaning_n of_o the_o apostle_n in_o this_o 22._o verse_n verse_n sense_n and_o meaning_n of_o the_o word_n of_o the_o 22._o verse_n what_o if_o god_n be_v willing_a out_o of_o his_o good_a pleasure_n that_o he_o may_v conceive_v just_a wrath_n and_o inflict_v and_o execute_v just_a judgement_n and_o that_o he_o may_v make_v it_o appear_v that_o he_o be_v a_o god_n of_o power_n and_o able_a to_o confront_v the_o reprobate_n and_o to_o bring_v they_o to_o destruction_n what_o if_o god_n willing_a to_o keep_v back_o his_o wrath_n even_o with_o long_a patience_n suffer_v such_o as_o be_v fit_a receptacle_n to_o receive_v his_o vengeance_n as_o any_o vessel_n by_o reason_n of_o concavity_n to_o receive_v water_n i_o mean_v reprobate_n such_o as_o god_n have_v eternal_o decree_v to_o destruction_n not_o as_o it_o be_v the_o misery_n of_o the_o creature_n but_o as_o it_o make_v way_n for_o the_o manifestation_n and_o declaration_n of_o the_o justice_n of_o god_n but_o if_o the_o lord_n will_v so_o do_v what_o be_v that_o to_o thou_o what_o can_v thou_o say_v against_o it_o if_o the_o lord_n will_v so_o do_v observe_v observe_v come_v we_o now_o to_o the_o observation_n you_o see_v here_o in_o the_o general_n that_o both_o god_n elect_n and_o reprobate_n be_v compare_v to_o vessel_n frame_v by_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n the_o heavenly_a potter_n hence_o note_v we_o thus_o much_o doctrine_n that_o god_n elect_n and_o reprobate_n differ_v not_o in_o their_o matter_n at_o all_o they_o be_v both_o of_o they_o vessel_n and_o have_v both_o one_o general_a nature_n and_o be_v alike_o but_o the_o difference_n be_v in_o the_o use_n they_o be_v both_o make_v of_o the_o same_o lump_n by_o the_o same_o potter_n but_o they_o differ_v in_o the_o use_n he_o use_v the_o one_o as_o vessel_n of_o mercy_n the_o other_o as_o vessel_n of_o wrath_n god_n elect_v they_o be_v vessel_n fit_a to_o receive_v grace_n goodness_n holiness_n sanctification_n all_o good_a thing_n be_v pour_v into_o their_o heart_n and_o soul_n but_o the_o other_o they_o be_v fit_a to_o receive_v nothing_o but_o the_o sink_n of_o sin_n and_o all_o manner_n of_o uncleanness_n it_o
