with_o any_o one_o who_o have_v see_v it_o and_o without_o have_v any_o revelation_n about_o it_o as_o i_o have_v already_o observe_v but_o whoever_o consider_v many_o of_o their_o argument_n will_v and_o a_o infallible_a judge_n of_o controversy_n i_o must_v beg_v your_o pardon_n for_o that_o for_o such_o argument_n as_o these_o do_v not_o prove_v that_o there_o be_v such_o a_o judge_n but_o only_o that_o there_o ought_v to_o be_v one_o and_o therefore_o i_o must_v conclude_v no_o more_o from_o they_o indeed_o this_o be_v a_o very_a fallacious_a way_n of_o reason_v because_o what_o we_o may_v call_v useful_a convenient_a necessary_a may_v not_o be_v so_o in_o itself_o and_o we_o have_v reason_n to_o believe_v it_o be_v not_o so_o if_o god_n have_v not_o appoint_v what_o we_o think_v so_o useful_a convenient_a or_o necessary_a which_o be_v a_o true_a and_o more_o modest_a way_n of_o reason_v than_o to_o conclude_v that_o god_n have_v appoint_v such_o a_o judge_n when_o no_o such_o thing_n appear_v only_o because_o we_o think_v it_o so_o useful_a and_o necessary_a that_o he_o ought_v to_o do_v it_o these_o direction_n be_v sufficient_a to_o preserve_v all_o consider_v infallibility_n 2._o one_o principal_a dispute_n between_o we_o and_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n be_v about_o this_o infallible_a interpreter_n and_o they_o know_v that_o we_o will_v not_o own_o such_o a_o interpreter_n unless_o they_o can_v prove_v from_o scripture_n that_o there_o be_v such_o a_o one_o and_o who_o he_o be_v the_o inquiry_n than_o be_v how_o we_o shall_v learn_v from_o species_n of_o bread_n and_o wine_n which_o be_v nothing_o that_o it_o be_v only_o this_o nothing_o which_o we_o eat_v and_o drink_v in_o the_o sacrament_n and_o which_o go_v down_o into_o our_o stomach_n and_o carry_v whole_a christ_n down_o with_o it_o now_o this_o doctrine_n find_v so_o very_o harsh_a be_v so_o contrary_a to_o all_o the_o evidence_n of_o our_o sense_n and_o have_v so_o sense_n and_o reason_n be_v against_o it_o and_o yet_o there_o be_v not_o one_o word_n in_o scripture_n to_o prove_v any_o one_o part_n of_o this_o doctrine_n of_o transubstantiation_n neither_o that_o the_o natural_a
flesh_n and_o blood_n of_o christ_n be_v in_o the_o sacrament_n nor_o that_o the_o substance_n of_o bread_n and_o wine_n do_v not_o remain_v after_o consecration_n nor_o that_o the_o accident_n of_o bread_n and_o wine_n such_o as_o colour_v smell_v taste_n quantity_n weight_n subsist_v without_o any_o substance_n or_o subject_a to_o subsist_v in_o these_o be_v such_o paradox_n to_o sense_n and_o reason_n that_o they_o ought_v to_o be_v very_o well_o support_v with_o scripture_n before_o they_o be_v receive_v for_o article_n of_o faith_n or_o else_o our_o faith_n will_v be_v as_o very_a a_o accident_n without_o any_o substance_n as_o the_o sacramental_a species_n themselves_o be_v but_o though_o they_o have_v no_o text_n which_o prove_v the_o least_o tittle_n of_o all_o this_o yet_o they_o have_v a_o text_n whereon_o they_o graft_v this_o doctrine_n of_o transubstantiation_n viz._n this_o be_v my_o body_n which_o they_o say_v signify_v every_o thing_n which_o they_o teach_v concern_v transubstantiation_n but_o then_o i_o hope_v they_o will_v prove_v that_o it_o do_v so_o not_o expect_v that_o we_o shall_v take_v it_o for_o grant_v because_o they_o say_v it_o now_o not_o to_o insist_v upon_o those_o argument_n whereby_o our_o divine_n have_v so_o demonstrative_o prove_v that_o transubstantiation_n as_o explain_v by_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n can_v be_v the_o sense_n of_o this_o be_v my_o body_n my_o advice_n to_o protestant_n be_v to_o put_v they_o upon_o the_o proof_n that_o this_o be_v the_o sense_n of_o it_o which_o in_o reason_n they_o ought_v to_o prove_v appear_v some_o contradiction_n between_o they_o i_o will_v be_v content_v at_o present_a without_o dispute_v that_o point_n to_o give_v it_o on_o the_o side_n of_o scripture_n but_o i_o will_v oppose_v the_o evidence_n of_o sense_n and_o reason_n against_o any_o private_a man_n or_o any_o church_n exposition_n of_o scripture_n and_o if_o that_o exposition_n they_o give_v of_o any_o text_n of_o scripture_n as_o suppose_v this_o be_v my_o body_n contradict_v the_o evidence_n of_o sense_n and_o reason_n i_o may_v modest_o require_v as_o plain_a proof_n that_o this_o be_v the_o meaning_n of_o the_o text_n as_o i_o have_v that_o such_o a_o meaning_n be_v contrary_a to_o all_o sense_n and_o reason_n for_o though_o sense_n and_o reason_n be_v not_o the_o rule_n and_o measure_n of_o faith_n yet_o we_o must_v use_v our_o sense_n and_o reason_n in_o expound_v scripture_n or_o we_o may_v quick_o make_v a_o very_a absurd_a and_o senseless_a religion_n now_o this_o show_v we_o what_o kind_n of_o proof_n we_o must_v require_v that_o transubstantiation_n be_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o gospel_n viz._n as_o certain_a proof_n as_o we_o have_v that_o transubstantiation_n be_v contrary_a to_o sense_n and_o reason_n and_o therefore_o 1._o we_o must_v demand_v a_o self-evident_a proof_n of_o this_o because_o it_o be_v self-evident_a that_o transubstantiation_n contradict_v sense_n and_o reason_n every_o man_n who_o know_v what_o the_o word_n mean_n which_o i_o believe_v man_n may_v do_v without_o be_v great_a philosopher_n and_o will_v consult_v his_o own_o sense_n and_o reason_n will_v need_v no_o argument_n to_o prove_v that_o transubstantiation_n contradict_v both_o now_o such_o a_o scripture-proof_n i_o will_v see_v for_o transubstantiation_n so_o plain_a and_o express_v and_o self-evident_a that_o no_o man_n who_o understand_v the_o word_n can_v doubt_v whether_o this_o be_v the_o meaning_n of_o they_o i_o mean_v a_o reasonable_a not_o a_o obstinate_a wilful_a and_o sceptical_a doubt_v now_o i_o believe_v that_o our_o adversary_n themselves_o will_v not_o say_v that_o this_o be_v my_o body_n be_v such_o a_o self-evident_a proof_n of_o transubstantiation_n i_o be_o sure_a some_o of_o the_o wise_a man_n among_o they_o have_v not_o think_v it_o so_o and_o the_o fierce_a dispute_n for_o so_o many_o age_n about_o the_o interpretation_n of_o those_o word_n prove_v that_o it_o be_v not_o so_o for_o man_n do_v not_o use_v to_o dispute_v what_o be_v self-evident_a and_o prove_v itself_o without_o any_o other_o argument_n now_o it_o be_v very_o unreasonable_a to_o require_v any_o man_n to_o believe_v transubstantiation_n against_o a_o self-evident_a proof_n that_o it_o be_v contrary_a to_o sense_n and_o reason_n without_o give_v he_o a_o self-evident_a proof_n that_o it_o be_v the_o doctrine_n of_o scripture_n which_o be_v to_o require_v a_o man_n to_o believe_v against_o the_o best_a reason_n and_o evidence_n 2._o we_o must_v demand_v such_o a_o scripture-proof_n of_o transubstantiation_n as_o can_v possible_o signify_v any_o thing_n else_o or_o else_o it_o will_v not_o answer_v that_o evidence_n which_o we_o have_v against_o transubstantiation_n for_o sense_n and_o reason_n pronounce_v transubstantiation_n to_o be_v natural_o impossible_a and_o therefore_o unless_o it_o be_v as_o impossible_a to_o put_v any_o other_o sense_n upon_o scripture_n than_o what_o signify_v transubstantiation_n as_o it_o be_v to_o reconcile_v transubstantiation_n to_o sense_n and_o reason_n there_o be_v not_o such_o good_a evidence_n for_o transubstantiation_n as_o against_o it_o be_v the_o scripture-proof_n for_o transubstantiation_n so_o plain_a and_o evident_a that_o it_o be_v impossible_a to_o put_v any_o other_o sense_n on_o the_o word_n than_o i_o will_v grant_v that_o it_o be_v as_o impossible_a for_o those_o who_o believe_v the_o scripture_n to_o disbelieve_v transubstantiation_n as_o it_o be_v for_o those_o who_o trust_v to_o their_o own_o sense_n and_o reason_n to_o believe_v it_o here_o the_o difficulty_n will_v be_v equal_a on_o both_o side_n and_o then_o i_o shall_v prefer_v a_o divine_a revelation_n if_o it_o be_v possible_a to_o prove_v such_o a_o revelation_n to_o be_v divine_a before_o natural_a sense_n and_o reason_n but_o i_o presume_v no_o man_n will_v say_v that_o it_o be_v sense_n and_o interpretation_n of_o scripture_n be_v and_o thereby_o overthrow_v all_o supernatural_a knowledge_n the_o scripture_n we_o know_v be_v expound_v to_o very_o different_a and_o contrary_a sense_n and_o make_v to_o countenance_v the_o most_o monstrous_a and_o absurd_a doctrine_n witness_v all_o the_o ancient_a heresy_n which_o have_v be_v father_v on_o the_o scripture_n now_o what_o impossible_a more_o contrary_a to_o sense_n and_o reason_n than_o the_o doctrine_n of_o transubstantiation_n be_v and_o than_o it_o be_v no_o argument_n against_o any_o doctrine_n or_o any_o exposition_n of_o scripture_n that_o it_o be_v absurd_a and_o impossible_a contrary_a to_o sense_n and_o reason_n for_o so_o transubstantiation_n be_v and_o if_o we_o may_v believe_v one_o absurd_a doctrine_n we_o may_v believe_v five_o hundred_o how_o absurd_a soever_o they_o be_v and_o then_o what_o defence_n have_v any_o man_n against_o the_o most_o monstrous_a corruption_n of_o the_o christian_a faith_n be_v this_o the_o way_n to_o improve_v knowledge_n to_o destroy_v all_o the_o certain_a mark_n and_o character_n of_o truth_n and_o error_n and_o to_o leave_v no_o rule_n to_o judge_v by_o if_o the_o design_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v to_o improve_v our_o mind_n by_o a_o know_a and_o understand_v faith_n transubstantiation_n which_o overthrow_v the_o certainty_n both_o of_o natural_a and_o reveal_v knowledge_n can_v be_v no_o gospel-doctrine_n 3._o the_o authority_n of_o a_o infallible_a judge_n who_o we_o must_v believe_v in_o every_o thing_n without_o examine_v the_o reason_n of_o what_o he_o affirm_v nay_o though_o he_o teach_v such_o doctrine_n as_o appear_v to_o we_o most_o express_o contrary_a to_o sense_n and_o reason_n and_o scripture_n be_v no_o gospel-doctrine_n because_o it_o be_v not_o the_o way_n to_o make_v man_n wise_a and_o understand_a christian_n which_o be_v the_o great_a design_n of_o the_o gospel_n for_o to_o suspend_v the_o exercise_n of_o reason_n and_o judgement_n be_v not_o the_o way_n to_o improve_v man_n knowledge_n a_o infallible_a teacher_n and_o a_o infallible_a rule_n do_v indeed_o mighty_o contribute_v to_o the_o improvement_n of_o knowledge_n but_o such_o a_o infallible_a judge_n as_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n boast_v of_o can_v only_o make_v man_n ignorant_a and_o stupid_a believer_n for_o there_o be_v a_o vast_a difference_n between_o a_o infallible_a teacher_n and_o a_o infallible_a judge_n which_o few_o man_n observe_v at_o least_o have_v not_o well_o explain_v for_o a_o infallible_a grant_v man_n may_v be_v teach_v the_o principle_n of_o christian_a religion_n as_o child_n be_v without_o read_v the_o bible_n yet_o if_o they_o will_v but_o grant_v that_o study_v and_o meditate_v on_o the_o holy_a scripture_n be_v the_o best_a and_o only_o way_n to_o improve_v in_o all_o true_a christian_a knowledge_n this_o show_v how_o contrary_a this_o prohibition_n of_o read_v the_o scripture_n be_v to_o the_o great_a design_n of_o the_o gospel_n to_o perfect_v our_o knowledge_n in_o the_o mystery_n of_o christ._n 2_o lie_n this_o be_v a_o mighty_a presumption_n also_o against_o transubstantiation_n that_o it_o be_v no_o gospel_n doctrine_n because_o it_o overthrow_v the_o very_a fundamental_a principle_n of_o knowledge_n which_o be_v a_o direct_a contradiction_n to_o the_o reasonable_a creature_n and_o destroy_v reason_n and_o beast_n be_v as_o fit_a to_o be_v preach_v too_o as_o man_n and_o yet_o to_o contradict_v the_o plain_a and_o most_o natural_a notion_n of_o our_o mind_n be_v to_o destroy_v humane_a reason_n and_o to_o leave_v mankind_n no_o rule_n or_o principle_n to_o know_v and_o judge_v by_o no_o man_n can_v know_v any_o thing_n which_o contradict_v the_o principle_n of_o natural_a knowledge_n because_o he_o have_v only_o these_o natural_a principle_n to_o know_v by_o and_o therefore_o however_o his_o faith_n may_v be_v improve_v by_o it_o he_o forfeit_v his_o natural_a knowledge_n and_o have_v no_o supernatural_a knowledge_n in_o the_o room_n of_o it_o for_o how_o can_v a_o man_n know_v and_o understand_v that_o which_o be_v contrary_a to_o all_o the_o natural_a knowledge_n and_o understanding_n he_o have_v there_o may_v be_v some_o reveal_v principle_n of_o knowledge_n superadd_v to_o natural_a principle_n and_o these_o thing_n we_o may_v know_v to_o be_v so_o though_o we_o have_v no_o natural_a notion_n of_o they_o and_o this_o perfect_v because_o it_o enlarge_v our_o knowledge_n as_o the_o knowledge_n of_o three_o divine_a person_n superadd_v to_o the_o natural_a belief_n of_o one_o supreme_a god_n which_o do_v not_o overthrow_v the_o belief_n of_o one_o god_n but_o only_o acquaint_v we_o that_o there_o be_v three_o divine_a person_n in_o the_o unity_n of_o the_o godhead_n which_o whatever_o difficulty_n there_o may_v be_v in_o apprehend_v it_o yet_o overthrow_v no_o natural_a notion_n this_o be_v a_o improvement_n of_o knowledge_n because_o we_o know_v all_o we_o do_v before_o and_o we_o know_v something_o more_o that_o as_o there_o be_v one_o god_n so_o there_o be_v three_o person_n who_o be_v this_o one_o god_n and_o though_o we_o have_v no_o natural_a notion_n of_o this_o how_o three_o person_n be_v one_o god_n because_o we_o know_v no_o distinction_n between_o person_n and_o essence_n in_o finite_a being_n yet_o we_o have_v no_o natural_a notion_n that_o there_o can_v be_v more_o person_n than_o one_o in_o a_o infinite_a essence_n and_o therefore_o this_o may_v be_v know_v by_o revelation_n because_o there_o be_v no_o natural_a notion_n against_o it_o but_o now_o i_o can_v never_o know_v that_o which_o be_v contrary_a to_o all_o the_o principle_n of_o knowledge_n i_o have_v
