righteousness_n of_o christ_n and_o rely_v and_o roll_v itself_o on_o christ_n for_o salvation_n and_o apply_v his_o merit_n and_o righteousness_n to_o the_o soul_n without_o any_o regard_n to_o repentance_n and_o the_o love_n of_o god_n or_o any_o other_o grace_n or_o virtue_n that_o though_o at_o the_o same_o time_n god_n infuse_v the_o habit_n of_o all_o grace_n and_o virtue_n into_o a_o justify_v person_n yet_o in_o the_o act_n of_o justify_v he_o have_v no_o regard_n at_o all_o to_o repentance_n or_o any_o other_o grace_n but_o we_o be_v justify_v in_o order_n of_o nature_n before_o these_o be_v infuse_v into_o we_o and_o without_o any_o respect_n to_o they_o and_o some_o man_n will_v willing_o affix_v this_o notion_n as_o absurd_a as_o it_o be_v to_o our_o church_n because_o she_o only_o require_v the_o presence_n of_o these_o grace_n and_o virtue_n in_o the_o justify_v person_n but_o shut_v they_o out_o from_o the_o office_n of_o justify_v but_o i_o have_v make_v it_o appear_v that_o these_o word_n admit_v a_o better_a sense_n and_o that_o justification_n by_o faith_n only_o in_o the_o modern_a notion_n of_o it_o so_o as_o to_o exclude_v the_o antecedent_n necessity_n of_o repentance_n or_o any_o other_o internal_a grace_n or_o virtue_n be_v contrary_a to_o the_o constant_a doctrine_n of_o our_o church_n which_o require_v the_o presence_n of_o these_o grace_n as_o antecedent_n condition_n or_o qualification_n though_o it_o shut_v they_o out_o from_o be_v the_o meritorious_a cause_n of_o justification_n and_o to_o confirm_v this_o i_o observe_v second_o that_o our_o church_n do_v not_o attribute_v our_o justification_n to_o any_o particular_a act_n of_o faith_n she_o frequent_o indeed_o inculcate_n the_o embrace_v of_o the_o promise_n of_o pardon_n and_o forgiveness_n as_o essential_a to_o a_o justify_v faith_n but_o the_o reason_n of_o that_o be_v not_o because_o that_o particular_a act_n justify_v we_o but_o to_o attribute_v our_o justification_n not_o to_o the_o merit_n of_o our_o own_o work_n but_o to_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n but_o she_o express_o affirm_v that_o faith_n do_v not_o justify_v as_o our_o own_o act_n that_o justification_n be_v not_o the_o office_n of_o man_n but_o of_o god_n and_o if_o we_o be_v not_o justify_v by_o faith_n as_o our_o own_o act_n much_o less_o can_v any_o particular_a act_n of_o faith_n which_o if_o it_o be_v consider_v as_o a_o act_n must_v be_v consider_v as_o our_o own_o act_n justify_v which_o overthrow_v that_o instrumentality_n of_o faith_n in_o justification_n which_o these_o repent_v of_o our_o sin_n and_o believe_v and_o obey_v the_o gospel_n of_o his_o son_n trust_v whole_o in_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n and_o in_o the_o merit_n and_o mediation_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n as_o it_o be_v express_v at_o large_a in_o the_o homily_n that_o the_o true_a understanding_n 2._o and_o mean_v of_o our_o be_v justify_v by_o faith_n without_o work_n or_o by_o merit_n and_o desert_n but_o to_o the_o grace_n and_o mercy_n of_o god_n thus_o our_o church_n tell_v we_o that_o the_o reason_n why_o faith_n only_o be_v say_v to_o justify_v be_v because_o faith_n do_v direct_o send_v we_o to_o christ_n for_o remission_n of_o our_o sin_n and_o that_o by_o faith_n give_v we_o of_o god_n we_o embrace_v the_o promise_n of_o god_n mercy_n and_o of_o the_o remission_n of_o our_o sin_n which_o thing_n none_o other_o of_o our_o virtue_n or_o work_n proper_o do_v that_o be_v justice_z or_o charity_n or_o any_o other_o virtue_n do_v not_o in_o its_o own_o now_o to_o proceed_v to_o the_o consideration_n of_o our_o union_n to_o christ_n in_o which_o argument_n mr._n ferguson_n have_v put_v out_o his_o whole_a strength_n such_o as_o it_o be_v which_o consist_v only_o in_o some_o childish_a cavil_n false_a representation_n and_o insolent_a and_o foolish_a triumph_n though_o i_o wonder_v he_o have_v no_o more_o craft_n than_o to_o tell_v such_o improbable_a story_n as_o confute_v themselves_o as_o for_o instance_n he_o charge_v my_o notion_n of_o union_n to_o christ_n with_o disserve_v holiness_n why_o what_o be_v my_o notion_n of_o union_n that_o i_o express_v in_o few_o word_n that_o &c_n christ_n be_v a_o spiritual_a king_n and_o all_o christian_n be_v his_o subject_n and_o our_o union_n to_o christ_n consist_v in_o our_o belief_n of_o his_o revelation_n obedience_n to_o his_o law_n and_o subjection_n to_o his_o authority_n how_o can_v this_o disserve_v holiness_n which_o make_v holiness_n and_o obedience_n essential_a to_o our_o union_n this_o be_v a_o very_a improbable_a story_n and_o i_o doubt_v he_o will_v find_v few_o voucher_n for_o it_o and_o yet_o to_o see_v the_o power_n of_o wit_n he_o have_v two_o or_o three_o as_o plain_a proof_n of_o it_o as_o heart_n can_v wish_v for_o first_o he_o observe_v that_o i_o acknowledge_v that_o in_o one_o sense_n we_o must_v be_v unite_v to_o christ_n before_o we_o can_v be_v holy_a but_o then_o he_o ought_v to_o have_v be_v so_o honest_a as_o to_o have_v tell_v what_o sense_n that_o be_v i_o shall_v transcribe_v that_o passage_n and_o leave_v man_n to_o judge_v what_o they_o please_v of_o our_o author_n our_o union_n 349._o to_o christ_n be_v more_o or_o less_o perfect_a according_a to_o our_o attainment_n in_o true_a piety_n and_o virtue_n the_o first_o and_o low_a degree_n of_o our_o union_n to_o christ_n be_v a_o belief_n of_o his_o gospel_n which_o in_o order_n of_o nature_n must_v go_v before_o obedience_n to_o it_o but_o yet_o it_o include_v a_o purpose_n and_o resolution_n of_o obey_v it_o and_o in_o this_o sense_n we_o must_v be_v unite_v to_o christ_n before_o we_o can_v be_v holy_a because_o this_o belief_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v the_o great_a principle_n of_o obedience_n but_o then_o our_o union_n be_v not_o perfect_v without_o actual_a obedience_n this_o make_v we_o the_o true_a disciple_n of_o christ_n when_o we_o be_v fruitful_a in_o good_a work_n so_o that_o all_o i_o affirm_v be_v that_o we_o must_v first_o believe_v the_o gospel_n before_o we_o can_v obey_v it_o and_o that_o a_o sincere_a belief_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o a_o hearty_a resolution_n of_o obey_v it_o do_v begin_v our_o union_n to_o christ_n before_o we_o may_v have_v the_o opportunity_n of_o external_n obedience_n the_o internal_a act_n of_o the_o mind_n as_o faith_n and_o repentance_n and_o the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o the_o sincere_a purpose_n of_o a_o new_a life_n be_v antecedent_o necessary_a to_o our_o union_n to_o christ_n but_o external_n holiness_n and_o obedience_n which_o require_v time_n and_o opportunity_n of_o action_n which_o be_v not_o always_o in_o our_o power_n may_v not_o always_o go_v before_o but_o must_v always_o follow_v to_o complete_a and_o perfect_a our_o union_n which_o i_o thus_o explain_v in_o the_o same_o place_n christ_n receive_v bad_a man_n as_o soon_o as_o they_o believe_v his_o gospel_n and_o resolve_v to_o be_v good_a but_o their_o reward_n be_v suspend_v upon_o the_o performance_n of_o these_o vow_n and_o this_o be_v no_o reproach_n to_o his_o holiness_n but_o still_o mr._n ferguson_n can_v prove_v that_o i_o make_v our_o union_n to_o christ_n to_o be_v perfect_v without_o actual_a obedience_n though_o i_o express_o affirm_v the_o contrary_a because_o i_o say_v that_o to_o be_v in_o where_o christ_n speak_v of_o such_o branch_n in_o he_o as_o bear_v no_o fruit_n joh._n 15._o 2._o by_o be_v in_o he_o he_o can_v intend_v no_o more_o than_o be_v member_n of_o his_o visible_a church_n by_o a_o public_a profession_n of_o faith_n in_o he_o for_o otherwise_o this_o phrase_n of_o be_v in_o he_o can_v be_v apply_v to_o hypocrite_n who_o bear_v no_o fruit_n but_o how_o do_v it_o hence_o follow_v that_o our_o union_n to_o christ_n be_v complete_v without_o obedience_n for_o do_v i_o ever_o assert_v that_o a_o external_n union_n to_o the_o visible_a church_n do_v complete_a and_o perfect_a our_o union_n to_o christ_n and_o if_o it_o do_v not_o than_o i_o hope_v we_o may_v safe_o assert_v that_o to_o be_v in_o christ_n be_v sometime_o take_v in_o that_o latitude_n of_o every_o branch_n that_o bear_v not_o fruit_n in_o i_o he_o take_v away_o now_o suppose_v we_o shall_v be_v so_o civil_a as_o to_o grant_v he_o this_o what_o will_v he_o gain_v by_o it_o why_o then_o the_o true_a import_n of_o it_o be_v this_o that_o unless_o we_o be_v in_o christ_n we_o can_v bring_v forth_o no_o fruit_n to_o god_n and_o that_o what_o show_v of_o be_v branch_n we_o make_v by_o a_o external_n membership_n in_o the_o church_n yet_o that_o shall_v be_v no_o obex_fw-la to_o christ_n disclaim_v and_o renounce_v our_o work_n his_o design_n be_v to_o prove_v that_o every_o in_o one_o sense_n or_o other_o they_o be_v in_o he_o for_o they_o can_v in_o no_o sense_n be_v say_v to_o bear_v fruit_n in_o he_o till_o in_o some_o sense_n they_o may_v be_v say_v to_o be_v in_o he_o and_o there_o be_v still_o one_o little_a difficulty_n behind_o what_o be_v mean_v by_o god_n take_v away_o those_o branch_n which_o bear_v not_o fruit_n in_o christ_n this_o be_v a_o plain_a allusion_n to_o the_o husbandman_n cut_v dead_a and_o fruitless_a branch_n off_o from_o the_o vine_n and_o so_o signify_v the_o excision_n of_o such_o fruitless_a branch_n from_o the_o body_n of_o christ_n and_o how_o can_v they_o be_v cut_v off_o and_o take_v away_o from_o christ_n if_o they_o be_v never_o in_o he_o and_o yet_o after_o all_o our_o author_n be_v force_v to_o return_v to_o what_o he_o design_v to_o confute_v and_o by_o a_o branch_n to_o understand_v one_o who_o live_v in_o external_n membership_n with_o the_o church_n and_o by_o so_o do_v make_v a_o show_n of_o be_v a_o branch_n in_o christ_n that_o be_v as_o he_o must_v mean_v if_o he_o mean_v any_o thing_n of_o be_v vital_o unite_v to_o he_o when_o he_o be_v not_o which_o be_v as_o much_o as_o ever_o i_o assert_v in_o this_o matter_n only_o he_o will_v by_o no_o mean_n allow_v that_o these_o branch_n may_v be_v say_v to_o be_v in_o christ_n though_o he_o own_v they_o to_o be_v member_n of_o the_o visible_a ordinary_o save_v for_o our_o saviour_n speak_v here_o of_o ordinary_a case_n without_o baptism_n but_o then_o he_o add_v who_o shall_v be_v damn_v and_o they_o be_v unbeliever_n of_o two_o sort_n such_o infidel_n as_o refuse_v baptism_n and_o such_o unbeliever_n as_o be_v baptize_v so_o that_o he_o that_o believe_v not_o shall_v be_v damn_v signify_v that_o though_o faith_n and_o baptism_n be_v necessary_a to_o salvation_n yet_o unbelief_n alone_o whether_o man_n be_v baptize_v or_o not_o shall_v damn_v they_o for_o i_o will_v ask_v this_o author_n whether_o suppose_v that_o our_o and_o without_o which_o we_o can_v have_v no_o true_a nor_o sound_a understanding_n of_o they_o i_o shall_v speak_v it_o yet_o again_o that_o this_o author_n if_o it_o be_v possible_a may_v understand_v it_o this_o be_v kind_o do_v since_o so_o much_o lie_v at_o stake_n on_o it_o or_o however_o that_o he_o and_o his_o copartner_n in_o design_n may_v know_v that_o i_o neither_o be_o nor_o attain_v i_o wish_v i_o get_v well_o off_o but_o i_o will_v do_v my_o best_a endeavour_n to_o understand_v it_o by_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o person_n of_o christ_n the_o great_a mystery_n of_o god_n manifest_v in_o the_o flesh_n as_o reveal_v and_o declare_v in_o the_o gospel_n we_o be_v lead_v into_o a_o clear_a and_o full_a understane_n of_o many_o other_o mystery_n of_o grace_n and_o truth_n which_o be_v centre_v in_o his_o person_n and_o without_o which_o we_o can_v have_v no_o true_a nor_o sound_a understanding_n of_o they_o if_o by_o this_o he_o mean_v that_o we_o can_v understand_v those_o mystery_n of_o grace_n and_o truth_n which_o concern_v the_o person_n of_o christ_n without_o know_v the_o person_n of_o christ_n this_o be_v a_o great_a truth_n but_o contain_v no_o great_a mystery_n as_o for_o instance_n unless_o we_o have_v some_o knowledge_n of_o the_o person_n of_o christ_n god_n manifest_v in_o the_o flesh_n we_o can_v understand_v the_o love_n of_o god_n in_o send_v christ_n into_o the_o world_n nor_o the_o great_a mystery_n of_o pardon_n and_o forgiveness_n through_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n we_o can_v know_v nothing_o of_o his_o death_n and_o resurrection_n and_o ascension_n into_o heaven_n and_o intercession_n for_o we_o at_o the_o right_a hand_n of_o god_n and_o all_o those_o benefit_n we_o receive_v from_o it_o we_o can_v understand_v our_o adoption_n in_o christ_n to_o be_v the_o child_n of_o god_n nor_o our_o union_n and_o reâ—â—â—â—on_n to_o he_o as_o our_o head_n and_o husband_n as_o our_o lord_n and_o saviour_n nor_o the_o communication_n of_o his_o grace_n and_o virtue_n to_o we_o nor_o his_o power_n and_o authority_n to_o raise_v we_o from_o the_o dead_a to_o judge_v the_o world_n and_o to_o bestow_v life_n and_o immortality_n upon_o his_o obedient_a disciple_n not_o that_o the_o spring_n of_o these_o truth_n lie_n in_o the_o person_n of_o christ_n or_o must_v be_v learn_v from_o a_o contemplation_n of_o his_o person_n but_o from_o the_o revelation_n of_o the_o gospel_n but_o the_o knowledge_n of_o christ_n person_n be_v necessary_a in_o order_n to_o understand_v those_o other_o gospel_n mystery_n for_o the_o same_o reason_n that_o it_o be_v necessary_a to_o understand_v that_o there_o be_v such_o a_o man_n as_o alexander_n before_o you_o can_v know_v what_o he_o do_v where_o he_o be_v king_n what_o battle_n he_o fight_v what_o victory_n he_o win_v or_o by_o the_o same_o reason_n that_o you_o must_v first_o know_v the_o subject_n before_o you_o can_v know_v the_o property_n and_o qualification_n of_o it_o if_o this_o be_v all_o the_o doctor_n intend_v i_o must_v confess_v it_o be_v very_o sound_a and_o orthodox_n but_o yet_o i_o must_v say_v that_o time_n be_v when_o he_o mean_v otherwise_o and_o his_o obscure_a way_n of_o express_v so_o plain_a a_o thing_n will_v make_v any_o one_o suspect_n that_o he_o mean_v something_o more_o still_o and_o if_o he_o do_v then_o after_o all_o his_o soft_a and_o palliate_a expression_n it_o must_v come_v to_o this_o that_o the_o person_n of_o christ_n be_v the_o spring_n and_o fountain_n of_o all_o save_a knowledge_n from_o whence_o we_o must_v learn_v all_o those_o mystery_n which_o be_v but_o obscure_o and_o imperfect_o reveal_v in_o the_o gospel_n unless_o we_o make_v use_v of_o this_o knowledge_n of_o christ_n and_o acquaintance_n with_o his_o person_n to_o expound_v and_o unriddle_v they_o and_o indeed_o his_o second_o explication_n of_o his_o sense_n in_o this_o matter_n plain_o look_v this_o way_n for_o under_o a_o acquaintance_n with_o christ_n he_o include_v the_o knowledge_n of_o he_o as_o the_o eternal_a son_n of_o god_n incarnate_a the_o mediator_n between_o god_n and_o

very_o wary_o say_v and_o like_o a_o right_a sophister_n set_v aside_o all_o the_o save_a mystery_n of_o the_o gospel_n which_o concern_v the_o person_n and_o office_n and_o mediation_n of_o christ_n and_o then_o there_o be_v no_o other_o save_v mystery_n to_o be_v discover_v or_o at_o least_o no_o save_v knowledge_n of_o any_o other_o mystery_n because_o he_o know_v very_o well_o that_o no_o christian_n can_v own_v any_o save_a knowledge_n when_o he_o have_v lay_v aside_o the_o knowledge_n of_o christ_n and_o yet_o in_o this_o say_n he_o crafty_o insinuate_v too_o that_o there_o be_v some_o other_o save_v mystery_n which_o be_v to_o be_v discover_v when_o we_o be_v first_o acquaint_v with_o christ_n and_o he_o shall_v have_v do_v well_o to_o have_v tell_v i_o what_o they_o be_v and_o how_o they_o may_v be_v discover_v since_o my_o live_n or_o my_o christianity_n lie_v at_o stake_n and_o i_o be_o not_o very_o good_a at_o guess_v but_o since_o he_o have_v here_o conceal_v this_o secret_a we_o must_v learn_v what_o it_o be_v from_o his_o former_a write_n and_o then_o whatever_o danger_n there_o be_v in_o it_o i_o must_v needs_o say_v that_o this_o acquaintance_n with_o the_o person_n of_o christ_n be_v a_o very_a ill_a way_n of_o expound_v scripture_n or_o of_o learn_v gospel-mystery_n as_o be_v that_o which_o different_a man_n may_v use_v to_o different_a purpose_n as_o i_o show_v in_o my_o former_a discourse_n and_o from_o whence_o some_o man_n draw_v such_o conclusion_n as_o do_v quite_o evacuate_v the_o end_n and_o design_n of_o the_o gospel_n this_o be_v sufficient_a to_o vindicate_v myself_o from_o those_o imputation_n of_o falsehood_n and_o calumny_n which_o occur_v almost_o in_o every_o page_n of_o the_o doctor_n answer_n but_o i_o shall_v not_o dismiss_v this_o subject_n thus_o but_o shall_v first_o show_v you_o that_o there_o be_v such_o a_o way_n of_o reason_v from_o the_o knowledge_n of_o christ_n person_n now_o in_o great_a vogue_n among_o some_o late_a writer_n and_o what_o argument_n i_o reject_v upon_o that_o score_n as_o weak_a or_o fallacious_a and_o second_o discourse_v something_o more_o particular_o concern_v this_o way_n of_o reason_v as_o for_o the_o first_o i_o have_v give_v instance_n enough_o of_o this_o nature_n in_o my_o former_a discourse_n which_o be_v so_o plain_a and_o evident_a that_o i_o think_v whence_o we_o may_v learn_v the_o great_a deep_a and_o more_o save_a mystery_n of_o religion_n distinct_a from_o the_o revelation_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o that_o they_o do_v so_o be_v plain_a from_o this_o that_o most_o of_o the_o argument_n from_o whence_o they_o deduce_v and_o by_o which_o they_o prove_v their_o most_o darling_n and_o mysterious_a notion_n be_v whole_o owe_v to_o a_o acquaintance_n with_o christ_n person_n and_o be_v no_o where_o express_v in_o scripture_n i_o have_v already_o give_v two_o instance_n of_o this_o in_o his_o way_n of_o prove_v the_o naturalness_n of_o vindictive_a justice_n to_o god_n and_o the_o desert_n and_o demerit_n of_o sin_n and_o shall_v now_o add_v some_o more_o the_o doctor_n prove_v from_o the_o deity_n of_o christ_n as_o i_o observe_v in_o my_o former_a discourse_n 206._o the_o endless_a bottomless_a boundless_a grace_n and_o compassion_n that_o be_v in_o he_o mercy_n enough_o for_o the_o great_a the_o elder_a the_o slubborne_a transgressor_n the_o infiniteness_n of_o grace_n with_o respect_n to_o the_o spring_n or_o fountain_n the_o deity_n of_o christ_n will_v answer_v all_o our_o objection_n what_o be_v our_o finite_a guilt_n before_o it_o how_o come_v this_o guilt_n to_o be_v finite_a now_o when_o we_o be_v so_o often_o tell_v that_o the_o demerit_n of_o every_o sin_n be_v infinite_a as_o be_v commit_v against_o a_o infinite_a god_n and_o require_v a_o infinite_a satisfaction_n for_o its_o atonement_n show_v i_o the_o sinner_n that_o can_v spread_v his_o iniquity_n to_o the_o dimension_n if_o i_o may_v so_o say_v of_o this_o grace_n i_o be_o glad_a to_o hear_v the_o doctor_n put_v so_o fair_a a_o sense_n on_o these_o word_n and_o to_o declare_v to_o the_o world_n that_o he_o design_v no_o more_o in_o it_o than_o to_o invite_v all_o sort_n of_o sinner_n 170._o though_o under_o the_o most_o discourage_a qualification_n to_o come_v unto_o christ_n for_o grace_n and_o mercy_n by_o faith_n and_o repentance_n though_o any_o man_n who_o read_v that_o long_a discourse_n about_o a_o endless_a bottomless_a boundless_a grace_n and_o compassion_n in_o christ_n such_o a_o infinite_a grace_n as_o make_v nothing_o of_o our_o finite_a guilt_n as_o all_o the_o sin_n in_o the_o world_n can_v equal_v its_o dimension_n without_o one_o word_n of_o faith_n or_o repentance_n or_o a_o new_a life_n to_o qualify_v we_o for_o this_o mercy_n especial_o if_o withal_o he_o understand_v what_o a_o great_a patron_n the_o doctor_n be_v of_o the_o necessity_n of_o holiness_n and_o obedience_n to_o qualify_v we_o for_o god_n mercy_n as_o appear_v from_o what_o i_o have_v already_o discourse_v above_o will_v not_o easy_o have_v guess_v this_o to_o have_v be_v his_o meaning_n and_o whoever_o write_v a_o book_n which_o can_v be_v understand_v without_o a_o commentary_n ought_v not_o to_o complain_v that_o he_o be_v mistake_v nor_o charge_v his_o reader_n upon_o that_o account_n with_o ignorance_n falsehood_n or_o calumny_n though_o for_o my_o part_n i_o shall_v be_v very_o well_o content_v he_o shall_v write_v another_o book_n consist_v of_o little_a else_o than_o those_o mild_a and_o gentle_a imputation_n of_o falsehood_n and_o calumny_n so_o he_o will_v but_o recant_v or_o at_o least_o handsome_o palliate_v those_o doctrine_n which_o otherwise_o may_v encourage_v bad_a man_n continue_v so_o to_o lay_v claim_n to_o such_o a_o boundless_a and_o bottomless_a mercy_n but_o my_o present_a business_n be_v to_o observe_v how_o the_o doctor_n prove_v that_o there_o be_v such_o a_o boundless_a bottomless_a grace_n in_o christ_n and_o his_o argument_n be_v take_v from_o his_o divine_a nature_n which_o be_v infinite_a for_o when_o the_o conduit_n of_o his_o humanity_n be_v inseparable_o unite_v to_o the_o infinite_a inexhausted_a fonntain_n of_o the_o deity_n who_o can_v look_v into_o the_o depth_n thereof_o if_o now_o there_o be_v grace_n enough_o for_o sinner_n
