observance_n of_o those_o prescription_n with_o so_o much_o earnestness_n as_o they_o do_v if_o this_o where_o the_o only_a instance_n in_o which_o man_n can_v eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o this_o i_o call_v a_o very_a considerable_a inquiry_n and_o therefore_o i_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o give_v it_o as_o plain_a and_o full_a satisfaction_n as_o i_o be_o able_a it_o seem_v to_o consist_v of_o several_a part_n to_o all_o which_o i_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o suit_v proper_a answer_n in_o these_o follow_a proposition_n 1._o whatever_o man_n may_v say_v or_o think_v in_o this_o matter_n this_o only_a be_v that_o eat_n and_o drink_v unworthy_o that_o the_o apostle_n mean_v in_o this_o place_n and_o to_o which_o he_o threaten_v this_o punishment_n this_o i_o have_v clear_v already_o and_o need_v not_o stand_v repeat_v it_o again_o not_o consider_v the_o lord_n body_n but_o eat_v the_o holy_a sacrament_n as_o a_o common_a meal_n be_v as_o regardless_o and_o intemperate_a at_o the_o it_o or_o so_o gross_o irreverent_a and_o careless_a as_o not_o to_o consider_v it_o for_o have_v they_o do_v either_o much_o more_o both_o they_o can_v hardly_o have_v be_v guilty_a of_o such_o profaneness_n or_o of_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o as_o they_o do_v and_o that_o be_v what_o i_o will_v say_v in_o this_o period_n that_o whatever_o the_o sense_n of_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o be_v in_o this_o place_n the_o discern_a the_o lord_n body_n will_v secure_v man_n from_o it_o and_o this_o i_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o make_v plain_a in_o these_o follow_a consideration_n 1._o the_o not_o discern_v the_o lord_n body_n be_v here_o make_v the_o reason_n of_o their_o eat_n and_o drink_v unworthy_o this_o i_o have_v clear_v already_o to_o be_v the_o reason_n both_o of_o the_o sin_n and_o punishment_n too_o from_o whence_o it_o be_v plain_a that_o discern_v the_o lord_n body_n will_v secure_v from_o both_o for_o if_o man_n eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o because_o they_o do_v not_o discern_v the_o lord_n body_n then_o if_o they_o do_v discern_v it_o they_o will_v not_o eat_v unworthy_o for_o the_o old_a rule_n be_v true_a in_o morality_n as_o well_o as_o nature_n and_o will_v hold_v in_o this_o instance_n as_o well_o as_o other_o take_v away_o the_o cause_n and_o the_o effect_n will_v cease_v 2._o but_o second_o this_o appear_v clear_a in_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o thing_n for_o there_o be_v a_o direct_a and_o immediate_a virtue_n and_o power_n in_o discern_v the_o lord_n body_n to_o cause_v in_o man_n all_o those_o qualification_n that_o render_v they_o meet_v for_o this_o service_n and_o sufficient_o secure_v they_o from_o eat_v unworthy_o as_o the_o corinthian_n do_v yea_o and_o from_o do_v so_o in_o any_o sense_n like_o unto_o they_o for_o first_o in_o general_n if_o man_n discern_v the_o lord_n body_n they_o will_v present_o perceive_v that_o this_o be_v a_o most_o sacred_a solemn_a service_n of_o religion_n and_o not_o any_o ordinary_a thing_n and_o by_o this_o will_v not_o only_o be_v admonish_v of_o that_o reverence_n and_o devotion_n that_o it_o ought_v to_o be_v perform_v with_o but_o strong_o induce_v to_o it_o man_n natural_o have_v some_o sense_n of_o reverence_n and_o awe_n upon_o their_o mind_n when_o they_o be_v address_v themselves_o to_o devotion_n and_o when_o they_o engage_v into_o the_o service_n do_v what_o can_v effect_v this_o in_o i_o if_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n do_v not_o can_v i_o see_v the_o lord_n body_n break_v and_o his_o blood_n pour_v out_o as_o i_o do_v in_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n for_o sin_n and_o to_o make_v the_o great_a atonement_n to_o the_o divine_a justice_n for_o sin_n i_o say_v can_v i_o see_v this_o without_o a_o sorrowful_a reflection_n upon_o my_o own_o they_o be_v apt_a to_o come_v so_o very_o unfit_o he_o be_v to_o recommend_v it_o as_o a_o necessary_a duty_n and_o to_o press_v the_o serious_a and_o become_a observation_n of_o it_o but_o he_o have_v receive_v no_o warrant_n from_o the_o lord_n to_o dispense_v with_o that_o observation_n he_o will_v have_v they_o to_o look_v upon_o the_o sacrament_n as_o a_o necessary_a stand_a service_n of_o their_o religion_n to_o count_v it_o their_o duty_n to_o eat_v and_o drink_v and_o his_o province_n be_v only_o to_o direct_v they_o how_o they_o may_v do_v it_o acceptable_o and_o not_o to_o their_o condemnation_n these_o consideration_n be_v sufficient_a to_o convince_v all_o christian_n that_o this_o be_v a_o plain_a necessary_a indispensable_a duty_n institute_v and_o intend_v by_o our_o lord_n to_o be_v a_o stand_a service_n in_o his_o church_n till_o his_o second_o come_v to_o judge_v the_o world_n and_o its_o be_v so_o become_v one_o very_o good_a argument_n to_o our_o present_a purpose_n and_o a_o good_a foundation_n to_o superstruct_v the_o truth_n of_o our_o observation_n upon_o for_o that_o which_o be_v necessary_a must_v be_v do_v and_o the_o
blood_n of_o the_o lord_n but_o whatever_o that_o expression_n may_v seem_v to_o imply_v it_o do_v real_o signify_v no_o more_o than_o the_o expression_n in_o this_o text_n that_o i_o be_o all_o this_o while_n consider_v it_o mean_v only_o this_o in_o plain_a english_a that_o such_o person_n be_v guilty_a of_o a_o great_a disrespect_n and_o dishonour_n to_o the_o body_n and_o blood_n of_o christ_n of_o which_o the_o bread_n and_o wine_n in_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n be_v the_o representative_n and_o symbol_n for_o a_o profanation_n of_o these_o reflect_v upon_o he_o who_o they_o represent_v and_o be_v ever_o interpret_v and_o think_v to_o do_v so_o the_o sense_n be_v well_o express_v in_o this_o text_n not_o discern_v the_o lord_n body_n i._n e._n not_o consider_v what_o a_o sacred_a and_o venerable_a thing_n they_o represent_v and_o signify_v and_o therefore_o use_v they_o with_o as_o little_a respect_n or_o religious_a regard_n as_o man_n do_v common_a bread_n and_o wine_n in_o their_o own_o house_n this_o i_o have_v show_v the_o corinthian_n do_v and_o something_o worse_o and_o the_o truth_n be_v the_o guilt_n of_o such_o a_o gross_a profanation_n can_v well_o be_v represent_v in_o too_o terrible_a a_o phrase_n so_o that_o still_o for_o any_o thing_n either_o say_v in_o this_o text_n or_o that_o can_v reasonable_o be_v deduce_v from_o the_o phrase_n of_o it_o my_o argument_n stand_v firm_a viz._n that_o there_o be_v no_o great_a punishment_n threaten_v to_o a_o failure_n in_o this_o than_o may_v be_v dread_v upon_o the_o like_a failure_n in_o other_o service_n of_o our_o religion_n damnation_n signify_v here_o only_o divine_a judgement_n and_o punishment_n at_o large_a and_o there_o be_v no_o reason_n to_o restrain_v it_o only_o to_o that_o tremendous_a punishment_n in_o hell_n yea_o there_o be_v that_o plain_a in_o the_o context_n which_o be_v evident_o against_o that_o sense_n of_o it_o for_o when_o the_o apostle_n have_v speak_v of_o damnation_n here_o he_o present_o instance_v in_o temporal_a infliction_n be_v sick_a and_o weak_a and_o fall_a asleep_a all_o which_o he_o not_o only_o call_v be_v chastened_a in_o this_o world_n but_o be_v chastened_a that_o they_o shall_v not_o be_v condemn_v with_o the_o world_n and_o then_o consonant_o to_o this_o the_o eat_n and_o drink_v this_o damnation_n to_o a_o man_n self_n signify_v no_o more_o than_o expose_v a_o man_n self_n and_o become_v obnoxious_a to_o these_o punishment_n and_o chastening_n of_o the_o lord_n these_o thing_n i_o think_v be_v plain_a sufficient_a to_o make_v out_o the_o truth_n of_o my_o argument_n and_o in_o consequence_n of_o that_o to_o show_v how_o much_o wide_a of_o the_o apostle_n mean_v here_o those_o man_n argue_v that_o talk_v so_o dreadful_o of_o everlasting_a damnation_n be_v eminent_o due_a to_o every_o failure_n in_o man_n receive_v the_o holy_a sacrament_n and_o that_o they_o stand_v accountable_a to_o god_n for_o a_o great_a sin_n and_o a_o high_a profanation_n of_o religion_n in_o this_o than_o they_o do_v by_o their_o miscarriage_n in_o other_o duty_n and_o service_n of_o it_o sect_n iii_o well_o but_o because_o it_o may_v yet_o be_v object_v against_o the_o purpose_n of_o this_o argument_n that_o whatever_o the_o minute_n and_o prime_a signification_n be_v yet_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o can_v but_o be_v account_v a_o great_a sin_n high_o affrontive_a to_o the_o body_n and_o blood_n of_o our_o lord_n and_o therefore_o a_o high_a provocation_n of_o god_n and_o a_o fault_n that_o he_o may_v most_o just_o punish_v with_o eternal_a damnation_n therefore_o i_o proceed_v to_o the_o second_o thing_n that_o i_o propose_v on_o this_o argument_n that_o whatever_o the_o meaning_n of_o damnation_n be_v in_o this_o place_n yet_o man_n do_v not_o deal_v fair_o in_o urge_v it_o against_o come_v to_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n or_o stay_v from_o it_o upon_o that_o reason_n and_o this_o i_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o make_v good_a upon_o these_o two_o reason_n among_o other_o first_o because_o if_o it_o shall_v mean_v eternal_a damnation_n yet_o it_o be_v not_o threaten_v to_o every_o degree_n of_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o but_o only_o to_o that_o gross_a and_o monstrous_a do_v this_o that_o the_o corinthian_n be_v guilty_a of_o and_o second_o because_o this_o damnation_n do_v not_o restrain_v man_n from_o other_o sin_n which_o they_o must_v acknowledge_v to_o be_v as_o damn_v as_o this_o 1._o the_o first_o of_o these_o i_o need_v but_o just_a name_n because_o i_o have_v insist_v upon_o it_o large_o already_o here_o i_o shall_v only_o add_v two_o short_a consideration_n further_o relative_a to_o this_o matter_n first_o that_o it_o be_v not_o fair_a deal_n with_o scripture_n to_o extend_v the_o signification_n of_o it_o beyond_o the_o proper_a intendment_n and_o meaning_n or_o to_o take_v a_o liberty_n of_o fright_v people_n with_o the_o danger_n of_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o upon_o every_o failure_n when_o the_o apostle_n use_v that_o phrase_n only_o in_o the_o case_n of_o such_o a_o prodigious_a profanation_n of_o the_o sacrament_n as_o the_o corinthian_n be_v now_o guilty_a of_o i_o have_v already_o say_v their_o miscarriage_n may_v well_o be_v count_v eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o indeed_o but_o therefore_o to_o infer_v that_o every_o failure_n to_o eat_v and_o drink_v so_o reverent_o so_o fit_o and_o so_o becoming_o as_o man_n shall_v be_v present_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o in_o proportion_n to_o they_o be_v put_v our_o own_o sense_n upon_o scripture_n and_o judge_v the_o thing_n of_o religion_n by_o our_o own_o measure_n only_o and_o second_o i_o add_v that_o it_o be_v unreasonable_a as_o well_o as_o uncharitable_a to_o affright_v man_n with_o danger_n of_o the_o same_o punishment_n when_o they_o be_v far_o enough_o from_o the_o same_o sin_n it_o be_v god_n prerogative_n to_o apportion_n punishment_n unto_o sin_n and_o not_o we_o and_o as_o much_o our_o duty_n as_o it_o be_v our_o interest_n to_o make_v a_o difference_n there_o where_o it_o be_v plain_a the_o divine_a mercy_n do_v it_o be_v great_o for_o our_o comfort_n and_o the_o ease_n of_o our_o guilty_a mind_n that_o we_o have_v a_o god_n to_o serve_v who_o transact_v with_o we_o by_o the_o measure_n of_o a_o great_a mercy_n and_o a_o infinite_a goodness_n that_o weigh_v we_o not_o as_o i_o observe_v before_o by_o grain_n and_o scruple_n but_o rate_v our_o service_n and_o our_o life_n too_o by_o the_o general_a frame_n and_o bent_n of_o they_o and_o provide_v we_o be_v industrious_a and_o honest_a in_o the_o main_a and_o sincere_o endeavour_v to_o do_v our_o best_a will_v accept_v they_o and_o not_o be_v extreme_a and_o rigorous_a to_o mark_v every_o thing_n that_o be_v do_v amiss_o or_o every_o little_a imperfection_n that_o may_v attend_v they_o this_o be_v the_o great_a comfort_n and_o support_v of_o our_o hope_n and_o to_o rob_v we_o of_o this_o be_v certain_o a_o mighty_a injury_n and_o disservice_n to_o we_o and_o yet_o this_o in_o their_o proportion_n they_o do_v that_o alarm_n and_o frighten_v man_n with_o danger_n of_o damnation_n upon_o every_o little_a failure_n in_o this_o matter_n though_o never_o so_o short_a of_o that_o to_o which_o it_o be_v only_o threaten_v i_o have_v show_v you_o it_o be_v not_o a_o easy_a thing_n for_o any_o christian_n to_o be_v guilty_a of_o this_o sin_n relate_v to_o in_o the_o text_n and_o i_o very_o believe_v it_o and_o therefore_o why_o they_o that_o be_v real_o so_o far_o from_o it_o yea_o who_o tremble_v at_o the_o very_a thought_n of_o it_o shall_v be_v so_o amuse_v and_o perplex_v with_o apprehension_n and_o fear_n of_o the_o punishment_n due_a to_o it_o i_o know_v not_o i_o be_o sure_a in_o all_o other_o case_n man_n desire_v we_o shall_v bend_v the_o bough_n rather_o the_o other_o way_n and_o think_v themselves_o severe_o judge_v and_o hardly_o deal_v with_o if_o we_o this_o when_o i_o see_v he_o part_v with_o his_o own_o son_n his_o only_a son_n the_o son_n of_o his_o bosom_n and_o dear_a love_n yea_o expose_v he_o to_o suffering_n and_o misery_n to_o pain_n and_o ready_a to_o receive_v and_o embrace_v i_o it_o can_v not_o have_v affect_v i_o much_o more_o than_o the_o visible_a representation_n of_o all_o this_o in_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n may_v do_v if_o i_o reflect_v upon_o it_o then_o as_o i_o shall_v and_o that_o i_o shall_v do_v if_o i_o discern_v the_o lord_n body_n i_o can_v scarce_o entertain_v the_o thought_n of_o it_o with_o less_o than_o rapture_n and_o transport_v but_o i_o be_o certain_o the_o most_o ill_a nature_a person_n live_v and_o for_o ever_o the_o most_o unworthy_a of_o the_o blessing_n of_o it_o if_o i_o fail_v in_o any_o measure_n of_o joy_n and_o thankfulness_n that_o i_o be_o able_a to_o express_v these_o now_o be_v even_o the_o natural_a effect_n of_o discern_v the_o lord_n body_n and_o they_o be_v such_o thing_n as_o will_v make_v we_o meet_a partaker_n of_o these_o holy_a mystery_n as_o our_o church_n speak_v they_o will_v set_v we_o far_o above_o that_o unworthiness_n that_o the_o corinthian_n be_v guilty_a of_o yea_o or_o any_o other_o thing_n that_o can_v be_v count_v unworthiness_n in_o preparation_n to_o it_o by_o all_o which_o thing_n my_o four_o proposition_n be_v i_o hope_v make_v good_a and_o bring_v to_o a_o issue_n and_o so_o be_v all_o that_o i_o intend_v to_o say_v on_o this_o first_o general_a collection_n chap._n iii_o i_o advance_v to_o the_o second_o collection_n that_o i_o make_v in_o order_n to_o the_o take_v off_o the_o exception_n that_o man_n make_v against_o come_v to_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n upon_o the_o reason_n of_o these_o word_n viz._n that_o the_o possibility_n and_o danger_n of_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o be_v not_o a_o sufficient_a reason_n for_o man_n to_o abstain_v from_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n upon_o i_o add_v this_o collection_n to_o come_v up_o more_o close_o to_o the_o exception_n that_o man_n make_v against_o this_o service_n and_o that_o which_o they_o hope_v to_o excuse_v their_o neglect_n of_o it_o upon_o the_o danger_n they_o tell_v we_o of_o receive_v unworthy_o be_v great_a and_o the_o apostle_n say_v express_o that_o it_o be_v so_o now_o we_o have_v great_a reason_n to_o think_v ourselves_o unworthy_a to_o come_v and_o to_o fear_v we_o shall_v come_v unworthy_o if_o we_o adventure_v to_o come_v and_o therefore_o think_v it_o the_o safe_a course_n not_o to_o come_v at_o all_o than_o run_v so_o great_a a_o danger_n in_o come_v we_o be_v very_o unwilling_a to_o damn_v ourselves_o and_o we_o hold_v it_o the_o safe_a way_n to_o stay_v away_o and_o venture_v it_o to_o god_n mercy_n than_o by_o come_v unworthy_o to_o incur_v the_o plain_a danger_n of_o damnation_n this_o be_v the_o great_a exception_n and_o the_o general_a plea_n of_o man_n in_o this_o case_n and_o at_o the_o first_o hear_v it_o seem_v to_o argue_v great_a modesty_n and_o regard_n to_o a_o man_n eternal_a salvation_n and_o therefore_o deserve_v to_o be_v consider_v by_o we_o now_o though_o what_o i_o have_v already_o say_v be_v intend_v to_o satisfy_v this_o exception_n and_o if_o true_o consider_v be_v i_o hope_v of_o good_a effect_n in_o order_n thereto_o for_o if_o man_n consider_v that_o eat_n and_o drink_v unworthy_o in_o the_o sense_n of_o this_o text_n be_v a_o sin_n that_o they_o can_v hardly_o be_v guilty_a of_o and_o when_o they_o consider_v themselves_o may_v be_v sure_o they_o be_v not_o it_o may_v sure_o enable_v they_o to_o surmount_v this_o scruple_n for_o while_o they_o be_v so_o far_o from_o the_o sin_n they_o need_v not_o be_v afraid_a of_o the_o punishment_n yet_o i_o advance_v this_o collection_n in_o order_n to_o the_o further_a satisfaction_n of_o it_o and_o when_o man_n be_v convince_v in_o this_o point_n also_o that_o if_o they_o be_v in_o any_o likelihood_n or_o danger_n of_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o yet_o that_o be_v not_o a_o sufficient_a reason_n for_o they_o to_o abstain_v from_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n upon_o than_o it_o may_v reasonable_o be_v hope_v that_o they_o will_v no_o long_o stick_v at_o this_o exception_n nor_o hope_v to_o be_v excuse_v upon_o the_o reason_n of_o it_o this_o therefore_o be_v that_o which_o i_o be_o go_v to_o make_v good_a the_o truth_n and_o reasonableness_n of_o that_o the_o possibility_n of_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o be_v not_o a_o sufficient_a reason_n for_o man_n to_o keep_v away_o from_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n upon_o nor_o fit_a to_o be_v admit_v as_o a_o excuse_n in_o this_o case_n and_o therefore_o how_o honest_a and_o sincere_a how_o conscientious_a and_o tender_a soever_o man_n may_v account_v themselves_o in_o stay_v from_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n upon_o this_o exception_n yet_o it_o be_v a_o temptation_n and_o a_o snare_n a_o very_a great_a error_n and_o mistake_n and_o that_o which_o will_v never_o bear_v they_o out_o in_o this_o omission_n and_o this_o i_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o make_v good_a first_o by_o the_o circumstance_n of_o this_o place_n and_o the_o apostle_n discourse_n in_o it_o and_o second_o by_o some_o argument_n found_v upon_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o thing_n 1._o from_o the_o circumstance_n of_o the_o apostle_n discourse_n in_o this_o place_n there_o be_v many_o thing_n in_o it_o pertinent_a to_o my_o purpose_n but_o i_o shall_v only_o brief_o observe_v these_o few_o that_o follow_v first_o the_o corinthian_n be_v gross_o guilty_a of_o this_o sin_n they_o do_v eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o in_o the_o most_o notorious_a and_o scandalous_a manner_n possible_a the_o apostle_n plain_o tell_v they_o so_o instance_n in_o evident_a matter_n of_o fact_n and_o blame_v they_o with_o that_o sharpness_n that_o so_o foul_a a_o matter_n just_o deserve_v yea_o second_o he_o aggravate_v the_o sin_n and_o guilt_n of_o this_o miscarriage_n to_o a_o very_a high_a degree_n and_o threaten_v it_o with_o a_o very_a sharp_a and_o severe_a punishment_n and_o yet_o three_o after_o all_o this_o he_o do_v not_o give_v they_o any_o the_o least_o allowance_n or_o liberty_n to_o stay_v from_o this_o holy_a service_n till_o they_o have_v repent_v of_o and_o reform_v sufficient_o this_o miscarriage_n he_o do_v not_o tell_v they_o that_o their_o unworthiness_n render_v they_o unfit_a to_o come_v to_o the_o table_n of_o the_o lord_n or_o give_v they_o a_o dispensation_n from_o it_o he_o do_v not_o advise_v they_o to_o stay_v away_o for_o the_o future_a till_o they_o have_v
