itself_o and_o not_o frequent_v in_o the_o common_a use_n of_o man_n as_o after_o this_o manner_n the_o apostle_n call_v the_o vocation_n of_o the_o gentile_n a_o mystery_n 5.32_o ephes_n 3.9_o ephes_n 5.32_o this_o conjunction_n which_o be_v begin_v here_o betwixt_o we_o and_o christ_n be_v call_v a_o mystery_n and_o the_o latin_a interpreter_n call_v it_o a_o sacrament_n and_o to_o be_v short_a you_o will_v not_o find_v in_o the_o book_n of_o god_n a_o word_n more_o frequent_a than_o the_o word_n mystery_n but_o as_o for_o the_o word_n sacrament_n whereby_o they_o interpret_v the_o greek_a word_n we_o find_v not_o this_o word_n by_o the_o same_o divine_n to_o be_v take_v so_o large_o neither_o be_v it_o take_v so_o large_o in_o any_o part_n of_o the_o book_n of_o god_n always_o that_o be_v use_v in_o the_o action_n but_o only_o for_o the_o material_a and_o earthly_a thing_n the_o element_n as_o for_o bread_n and_o wine_n in_o the_o supper_n and_o water_n in_o baptism_n and_o after_o this_o sort_n say_v augustine_n the_o wicked_a eat_v
the_o body_n of_o our_o lord_n concern_v the_o sacrament_n only_o that_o be_v concern_v the_o element_n only_o last_o of_o all_o they_o take_v it_o not_o only_o for_o the_o element_n but_o for_o the_o thing_n signify_v by_o the_o element_n and_o after_o this_o manner_n irenaeus_n say_v that_o a_o sacrament_n stand_v of_o two_o thing_n the_o one_o earthly_a the_o other_o heavenly_a the_o ancient_a divine_n then_o take_v the_o word_n after_o these_o sort_n no_o question_n all_o these_o way_n they_o take_v it_o right_o but_o leave_v the_o ambiguity_n of_o the_o word_n i_o take_v the_o word_n sacrament_n as_o it_o be_v take_v and_o use_v this_o day_n in_o the_o church_n of_o god_n for_o a_o holy_a sign_n and_o seal_n that_o be_v annex_v to_o the_o preach_v word_n of_o god_n to_o seal_v up_o and_o confirm_v the_o truth_n contain_v in_o the_o same_o word_n so_o that_o i_o call_v not_o the_o seal_n separate_v from_o the_o word_n a_o sacrament_n for_o as_o there_o can_v not_o be_v a_o seal_n but_o that_o which_o be_v the_o seal_n of_o a_o evidence_n and_o if_o the_o seal_n be_v separate_v from_o the_o evidence_n it_o be_v not_o a_o seal_n but_o look_v what_o it_o be_v by_o nature_n it_o be_v no_o more_o so_o there_o can_v be_v a_o sacrament_n except_o it_o be_v annex_v to_o the_o evidence_n of_o the_o word_n but_o look_v what_o the_o sacrament_n be_v by_o nature_n it_o be_v no_o more_o be_v it_o a_o common_a piece_n of_o bread_n it_o remain_v common_a bread_n except_o it_o be_v join_v to_o the_o evidence_n of_o the_o word_n therefore_o the_o word_n only_o can_v be_v a_o sacrament_n nor_o the_o element_n only_o can_v be_v a_o sacrament_n but_o the_o word_n and_o element_n coniunct_o must_v make_v a_o sacrament_n and_o so_o augustine_n say_v well_o let_v the_o word_n be_v place_v in_o that_o same_o category_n of_o relation_n now_o every_o relation_n again_o must_v stand_v of_o force_n betwixt_o two_o thing_n for_o one_o thing_n can_v be_v the_o correlative_a of_o itself_o but_o in_o a_o lawful_a relation_n of_o force_n there_o must_v be_v two_o thing_n which_o two_o have_v ever_o a_o mutual_a respect_n the_o one_o to_o the_o other_o therefore_o in_o every_o sacrament_n that_o have_v a_o relation_n there_o must_v be_v two_o thing_n which_o two_o have_v ever_o a_o mutual_a respect_n the_o one_o to_o the_o other_o take_v away_o one_o of_o these_o two_o one_o instrument_n or_o two_o or_o if_o they_o be_v give_v after_o one_o manner_n or_o two_o to_o both_o the_o instrument_n mark_v these_o diversity_n the_o diverse_a manner_n of_o the_o receive_n the_o diversity_n of_o the_o instrument_n and_o the_o diversity_n of_o the_o giver_n and_o you_o shall_v find_v little_a difficulty_n in_o the_o sacrament_n now_o to_o begin_v at_o the_o sign_n see_v all_o sacrament_n be_v sign_n sacrament_n the_o sign_n in_o the_o sacrament_n what_o call_v we_o the_o sign_n in_o the_o sacrament_n i_o call_v the_o sign_n in_o the_o sacrament_n whatsoever_o i_o of_o christ_n conjoin_v with_o that_o wine_n that_o as_o soon_o as_o thou_o receive_v that_o bread_n in_o thy_o mouth_n if_o thou_o be_v a_o faithful_a man_n or_o woman_n so_o soon_o receive_v thou_o the_o body_n of_o christ_n in_o thy_o soul_n and_o that_o by_o faith_n and_o as_o soon_o as_o thou_o receive_v that_o wine_n in_o thy_o mouth_n so_o soon_o thou_o receive_v the_o blood_n of_o christ_n in_o thy_o soul_n and_o that_o by_o faith_n in_o respect_n of_o this_o exhibition_n chief_o that_o they_o be_v instrument_n to_o deliver_v and_o exhibit_v the_o thing_n that_o they_o signify_v and_o not_o in_o respect_n only_o of_o their_o representation_n be_v they_o call_v sign_n for_o if_o they_o do_v nothing_o but_o represent_v or_o signify_v a_o thing_n absent_a then_o any_o picture_n or_o dead_a image_n shall_v be_v a_o sacrament_n for_o there_o be_v no_o picture_n as_o the_o picture_n of_o the_o king_n but_o at_o the_o sight_n of_o the_o picture_n the_o king_n
