your_o meaning_n as_o i_o suppose_v it_o be_v because_o in_o your_o explication_n of_o this_o proposition_n you_o seem_v to_o hold_v that_o christ_n die_v primary_o for_o his_o church_n and_o but_o in_o a_o secondary_a sense_n for_o individual_a believer_n so_o that_o it_o seem_v to_o follow_v that_o none_o can_v be_v true_a christian_n or_o in_o a_o salvable_a state_n but_o as_o they_o be_v consider_v incorporate_v into_o and_o so_o make_v one_o of_o this_o church_n so_o that_o church-member-ship_n be_v essential_a to_o they_o if_o this_o i_o say_v be_v your_o meaning_n then_o give_v i_o leave_v to_o take_v the_o boldness_n to_o deny_v the_o proposition_n for_o i_o can_v understand_v that_o a_o christian_a as_o such_o include_v any_o essential_a relation_n to_o a_o church_n in_o your_o sense_n that_o i_o may_v clear_v up_o this_o matter_n a_o little_a give_v i_o leave_v to_o tell_v you_o that_o this_o term_n christian_n may_v fall_v under_o divers_a consideration_n as_o and_o that_o he_o have_v many_o son_n and_o daughter_n hence_o it_o be_v that_o every_o son_n of_o god_n stand_v in_o a_o other_o relation_n and_o that_o be_v to_o all_o the_o rest_n that_o be_v in_o the_o same_o manner_n bear_v of_o god_n which_o in_o conjunction_n make_v up_o god_n family_n or_o church_n but_o they_o i_o say_v that_o the_o church_n here_o be_v to_o be_v take_v for_o the_o mankind_n as_o make_v up_o a_o body_n politic_a under_o the_o invisible_a god_n the_o creator_n and_o supreme_a governor_n second_o i_o say_v no_o such_o external_a communion_n can_v be_v have_v because_o of_o the_o vast_a number_n of_o profess_v christian_n scatter_v at_o such_o great_a distance_n upon_o the_o face_n of_o the_o earth_n that_o no_o such_o communion_n can_v possible_o be_v obtain_v so_o that_o it_o be_v as_o possible_a to_o conceive_v how_o a_o external_a communion_n may_v be_v have_v by_o every_o individual_a man_n with_o all_o mankind_n as_o how_o it_o may_v be_v have_v by_o every_o christian_a with_o the_o whole_a body_n of_o christian_n throughout_o the_o world_n this_o be_v so_o evident_a that_o he_o can_v but_o confess_v so_o much_o pag._n 14._o we_o can_v say_v he_o communicate_v with_o the_o catholic_n church_n but_o by_o communicate_v with_o some_o part_n of_o it_o but_o i_o say_v by_o communicate_v with_o some_o part_n of_o it_o we_o do_v not_o therefore_o communicate_v external_o with_o the_o whole_a for_o who_o ever_o say_v that_o a_o man_n by_o hold_v a_o communion_n with_o one_o city_n or_o corporation_n that_o thereby_o he_o hold_v a_o external_a politic_a communion_n with_o all_o mankind_n and_o what_o be_v it_o that_o you_o can_v say_v for_o the_o one_o but_o i_o can_v say_v much_o alike_o for_o the_o other_o do_v you_o say_v but_o all_o christian_n be_v unite_v under_o one_o head_n the_o lord_n christ_n so_o say_v i_o be_v all_o mankind_n unite_v under_o one_o god_n who_o be_v their_o head_n and_o governor_n do_v you_o say_v all_o christian_n communicate_v in_o some_o external_a privilege_n so_o say_v i_o do_v all_o mankind_n they_o be_v enlighten_v by_o the_o same_o sun_n breath_n in_o the_o same_o air_n feed_v on_o the_o fruit_n of_o the_o same_o earth_n do_v you_o say_v but_o they_o have_v not_o the_o same_o law_n as_o christian_n have_v which_o be_v necessary_a to_o unite_v they_o in_o one_o body_n politic_a i_o answer_v but_o if_o all_o mankind_n have_v the_o very_a same_o law_n yet_o if_o the_o publication_n and_o execution_n of_o those_o law_n be_v in_o different_a king_n hand_n that_o have_v jurisdiction_n over_o each_o other_o this_o be_v not_o enough_o to_o speak_v they_o all_o of_o one_o external_a politic_a communion_n no_o more_o do_v the_o same_o law_n among_o christian_n since_o the_o publication_n and_o execution_n thereof_o be_v in_o the_o hand_n of_o different_a visible_a church_n governor_n that_o have_v no_o jurisdiction_n over_o each_o other_o speak_v any_o external_a politic_a communion_n among_o all_o christian_n thus_o have_v i_o show_v of_o what_o word_n and_o phrase_n of_o a_o uncertain_a and_o undetermined_a sense_n the_o part_n of_o the_o proposition_n consist_v and_o how_o hard_o it_o be_v to_o give_v any_o tolerable_a sound_a sense_n of_o the_o whole_a we_o shall_v now_o further_o inquire_v of_o the_o interpretation_n give_v whether_o it_o can_v afford_v any_o further_a light_n to_o understand_v it_o better_o for_o the_o clear_n of_o this_o he_o say_v you_o may_v be_v please_v to_o consider_v that_o the_o primary_n design_n and_o intention_n of_o our_o saviour_n in_o his_o undertake_n for_o we_o be_v not_o to_o save_v particular_a person_n without_o respect_n to_o a_o society_n but_o to_o gather_v to_o himself_o a_o church_n in_o the_o form_n of_o a_o body_n politic_a of_o which_o himself_o be_v the_o head_n and_o particular_a christian_n the_o member_n and_o in_o this_o method_n through_o obedience_n to_o his_o law_n and_o government_n to_o bring_v man_n to_o salvation_n if_o i_o understand_v the_o force_n of_o these_o word_n with_o respect_n to_o the_o proposition_n it_o be_v this_o that_o you_o will_v prove_v that_o every_o christian_n upon_o the_o very_a account_n of_o his_o be_v so_o must_v needs_o be_v a_o member_n of_o the_o church_n because_o christ_n intend_v not_o to_o save_v particular_a christian_n but_o under_o the_o consideration_n of_o be_v member_n of_o the_o church_n i_o confess_v if_o this_o be_v as_o true_a as_o i_o suspect_v it_o to_o be_v false_a there_o will_v be_v weight_n in_o what_o be_v say_v but_o let_v it_o be_v try_v you_o say_v that_o christ_n primary_o design_v to_o save_v his_o church_n and_o but_o secondary_o individual_a christian_n as_o incorporate_v in_o this_o church_n i_o pray_v tell_v i_o do_v you_o take_v church_n here_o as_o you_o do_v in_o the_o proposition_n certain_o you_o ought_v
thing_n upon_o man_n conscience_n as_o necessary_a which_o be_v doubtful_a or_o unlawful_a and_o wherever_o the_o same_o thing_n be_v do_v there_o be_v a_o usurpation_n of_o the_o same_o nature_n obedience_n to_o church_n governor_n in_o all_o thing_n it_o be_v the_o high_a usurpation_n to_o rob_v man_n of_o the_o liberty_n of_o their_o judgement_n that_o which_o we_o plead_v for_o against_o the_o papist_n be_v that_o all_o man_n have_v their_o eye_n in_o their_o head_n as_o well_o as_o the_o pope_n that_o every_o one_o have_v a_o judicium_fw-la privatae_fw-la discretionis_fw-la which_o be_v the_o rule_n of_o practice_n as_o to_o himself_o and_o though_o we_o free_o allow_v a_o ministerial_a power_n under_o christ_n in_o the_o governor_n of_o the_o church_n yet_o that_o extend_v not_o to_o a_o obligation_n upon_o man_n to_o go_v against_o the_o dictate_v of_o their_o own_o reason_n and_o conscience_n etc._n etc._n a_o man_n have_v not_o the_o power_n over_o his_o own_o understanding_n much_o less_o can_v other_o have_v it_o nullus_fw-la credit_n aliquid_fw-la esse_fw-la verum_fw-la quia_fw-la vult_fw-la credere_fw-la id_fw-la esse_fw-la verum_fw-la non_fw-la est_fw-la in_o potestate_fw-la hominis_fw-la facere_fw-la aliquid_fw-la apparere_fw-la intellectui_fw-la svo_fw-la verum_fw-la quando_fw-la volucrit_fw-fr either_o therefore_o man_n be_v bind_v to_o obey_v church_n governor_n in_o all_o thing_n absolute_o without_o restriction_n or_o limitation_n which_o if_o it_o be_v not_o usurpation_n and_o dominion_n over_o other_o faith_n in_o they_o and_o the_o worst_a of_o implicit_a faith_n in_o other_o it_o be_v hard_o to_o define_v what_o either_o of_o they_o be_v or_o else_o if_o they_o be_v bind_v to_o obey_v only_o in_o lawful_a thing_n i_o then_o inquire_v who_o must_v be_v judge_n what_o thing_n be_v lawful_a and_o what_o not_o if_o the_o governor_n still_o than_o the_o power_n will_v be_v absolute_a again_o for_o to_o be_v sure_o whatever_o they_o command_v they_o will_v say_v be_v lawful_a either_o in_o its_o self_n or_o as_o they_o command_v it_o if_o every_o private_a person_n must_v judge_v what_o be_v lawful_a and_o what_o not_o which_o be_v command_v as_o when_o all_o be_v say_v every_o man_n will_v be_v his_o own_o judge_n in_o this_o case_n in_o thing_n concern_v his_o own_o welfare_n than_o he_o be_v no_o further_o bind_v to_o obey_v than_o he_o judge_n the_o thing_n to_o be_v lawful_a which_o be_v command_v the_o plea_n of_o a_o erroneous_a conscience_n take_v not_o off_o the_o obligation_n to_o follow_v the_o dictate_v of_o it_o for_o as_o he_o be_v bind_v to_o lay_v it_o down_o suppose_v it_o erroneous_a so_o he_o be_v bind_v not_o to_o go_v against_o it_o while_o it_o be_v not_o lay_v down_o these_o testimony_n be_v so_o clear_a and_o back_v with_o such_o unanswerable_a reason_n that_o i_o shall_v now_o not_o scruple_n to_o qualify_v the_o proposition_n under_o consideration_n thus_o that_o where_o the_o commission_n of_o sin_n so_o say_v he_o i_o add_v or_o the_o do_v any_o thing_n that_o be_v suspect_v to_o be_v sinful_a be_v require_v as_o the_o condition_n of_o communion_n there_o a_o withdraw_a be_v lawful_a and_o not_o at_o all_o schismatical_a have_v thus_o give_v a_o account_n of_o these_o different_a scene_n in_o which_o both_o he_o and_o i_o do_v understand_v the_o several_a part_n of_o this_o proposition_n i_o shall_v now_o come_v to_o examine_v what_o he_o have_v say_v for_o the_o confirmation_n thereof_o there_o be_v say_v he_o p._n 19_o but_o two_o case_n wherein_o it_o can_v be_v lawful_a to_o withdraw_v communion_n from_o a_o church_n one_o be_v when_o the_o church_n require_v of_o we_o as_o a_o condition_n of_o her_o communion_n a_o acknowledgement_n and_o profession_n of_o that_o to_o be_v truth_n which_o we_o know_v to_o be_v a_o error_n the_o other_o be_v when_o she_o require_v of_o we_o the_o join_n with_o she_o in_o some_o practice_n which_o we_o know_v to_o be_v against_o the_o law_n of_o god_n though_o i_o will_v not_o be_v so_o confident_a to_o say_v with_o this_o author_n that_o only_o in_o these_o two_o case_n it_o may_v be_v lawful_a to_o withdraw_v communion_n for_o there_o may_v be_v a_o three_o and_o a_o four_o which_o neither_o he_o nor_o i_o may_v at_o present_a think_v of_o yet_o so_o far_o i_o agree_v with_o he_o that_o these_o two_o case_n mention_v be_v just_a cause_n of_o withdraw_a communion_n but_o whereas_o he_o say_v that_o the_o error_n must_v be_v know_v to_o be_v such_o and_o the_o practice_n know_v to_o be_v against_o the_o law_n of_o god_n to_o that_o i_o say_v that_o knowledge_n imply_v certainty_n but_o i_o say_v if_o the_o error_n and_o practice_n be_v but_o suspect_v so_o as_o the_o conscience_n do_v but_o doubt_n it_o be_v sufficient_a as_o i_o have_v prove_v from_o the_o apostle_n and_o the_o testimony_n and_o reason_n of_o mr._n hales_n and_o dr._n stillingsleet_n this_o be_v premise_v i_o shall_v now_o proceed_v to_o a_o consideration_n of_o those_o ground_n which_o he_o suppose_v nonconformist_n plead_v as_o sufficient_a cause_n of_o their_o separation_n as_o they_o be_v enumerate_v and_o affirm_v by_o he_o to_o be_v insufficient_a first_o he_o say_v vnscriptural_a imposition_n can_v be_v no_o sufficient_a cause_n to_o warrant_v a_o separation_n from_o a_o church_n answer_v by_o unscriptural_a imposition_n he_o suppose_v as_o he_o tell_v we_o be_v mean_v no_o more_o than_o what_o be_v neither_o command_v nor_o forbid_v in_o scripture_n neither_o by_o particular_a or_o general_a rule_n thus_o when_o he_o have_v by_o a_o false_a supposition_n fashion_v and_o erect_v a_o man_n of_o straw_n he_o than_o push_v he_o quite_o down_o with_o the_o horn_n of_o a_o dilemma_n and_o fancy_n to_o himself_o a_o great_a victory_n for_o from_o that_o supposition_n he_o thus_o argue_v those_o unscriptural_a imposition_n which_o be_v neither_o command_v nor_o forbid_v by_o any_o general_a or_o particular_a rule_n in_o scripture_n be_v eitherin_o themselves_o lawful_a or_o unlawful_a if_o unlawful_a than_o they_o be_v against_o some_o particular_a or_o general_n scriptural_a rule_n &_o so_o can_v fall_v under_o the_o notion_n of_o unscriptural_a imposition_n which_o be_v suppose_v to_o be_v against_o neither_o of_o these_o rule_n if_o lawful_a than_o it_o can_v be_v imagine_v how_o their_o be_v command_v can_v make_v they_o unlawful_a so_o that_o in_o this_o case_n there_o be_v no_o sin_n in_o yield_a obedience_n and_o consequent_o no_o just_a cause_n of_o withdraw_a our_o communion_n this_o be_v the_o strength_n of_o what_o he_o have_v say_v to_o this_o first_o case_n my_o answer_n be_v this_o i_o wonder_v which_o of_o his_o dissenter_n give_v he_o ground_n to_o suppose_v that_o ever_o any_o of_o they_o take_v unscriptural_a imposition_n for_o such_o thing_n that_o be_v neither_o command_v nor_o forbid_v by_o any_o general_n or_o special_a rule_n in_o scripture_n if_o thus_o you_o care_v not_o upon_o what_o sandy_a premise_n you_o build_v your_o conclusion_n who_o can_v help_v it_o but_o i_o pray_v be_v please_v to_o let_v i_o tell_v you_o what_o we_o ourselves_o mean_v by_o unscriptural_a imposition_n they_o be_v such_o thing_n the_o religious_a use_n whereof_o be_v impose_v upon_o christian_n in_o the_o worship_n and_o service_n of_o god_n under_o the_o penalty_n of_o deprive_v minister_n of_o their_o office_n or_o the_o exercise_n thereof_o and_o of_o deprive_v both_o they_o and_o private_a christian_n of_o the_o liberty_n of_o enjoy_v gospel_n ordinance_n or_o the_o privilege_n of_o a_o visible_a church_n state_n by_o the_o censure_n of_o excommunication_n which_o be_v thing_n that_o be_v not_o either_o command_v or_o direct_o forbid_v in_o scripture_n in_o any_o express_a term_n for_o we_o confess_v that_o there_o be_v not_o the_o word_n surplice_n or_o sign_n of_o the_o cross_n etc._n etc._n so_o much_o as_o name_v in_o scripture_n and_o upon_o this_o account_n we_o allow_v they_o the_o name_n of_o unscriptural_a but_o we_o say_v moreover_o that_o the_o religious_a use_n of_o these_o thing_n in_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n and_o much_o more_o the_o imposition_n of_o they_o as_o necessary_a condition_n of_o communion_n be_v against_o general_a rule_n and_o instance_n in_o the_o like_o kind_a dis-allowed_n in_o scripture_n from_o whence_o we_o by_o deduction_n gather_v the_o unlawfulnesse_n and_o sinfulness_n thereof_o and_o upon_o this_o latter_a consideration_n i_o call_v they_o antiscriptural_a as_o be_v
religious_a custom_n and_o usage_n contrary_a to_o these_o general_n rule_v etc._n etc._n thus_o have_v give_v you_o our_o true_a sense_n and_o meaning_n of_o unscriptural_a ceremony_n now_o i_o answer_v to_o your_o dilemma_n either_o you_o say_v these_o thing_n thus_o impose_v be_v in_o themselves_o lawful_a or_o unlawful_a i_o answer_v your_o argument_n as_o you_o form_n it_o be_v trivial_a and_o not_o to_o the_o purpose_n for_o it_o speak_v not_o to_o the_o question_n under_o consideration_n for_o the_o question_n be_v not_o about_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o thing_n impose_v take_v absolute_o but_o about_o the_o religious_a use_n of_o those_o thing_n in_o the_o worship_n and_o service_n of_o god_n thus_o then_o your_o argument_n ought_v to_o proceed_v either_o the_o religious_a use_n of_o these_o thing_n impose_v in_o the_o worship_n and_o service_n of_o god_n be_v lawful_a or_o unlawful_a i_o answer_v now_o direct_o the_o religious_a use_n of_o they_o be_v unlawful_a and_o this_o antecedent_o to_o the_o impose_v of_o they_o and_o therefore_o the_o impose_v of_o they_o can_v make_v they_o lawful_a here_o have_v be_v a_o fit_a place_n for_o you_o to_o have_v show_v your_o strength_n if_o you_o have_v any_o in_o convince_v we_o that_o the_o religious_a use_n of_o these_o thing_n in_o god_n worship_n be_v lawful_a antecedent_o to_o the_o imposition_n but_o we_o have_v not_o a_o word_n hereof_o and_o therefore_o since_o i_o find_v no_o more_o opposition_n therein_o i_o may_v just_o dismiss_v this_o first_o thing_n without_o any_o further_a reply_n yet_o if_o any_o judgement_n of_o the_o apostle_n paul_n to_o give_v member_n of_o church_n caution_n against_o the_o reception_n of_o they_o col._n 2.8_o beware_v lest_o any_o man_n make_v a_o prey_n of_o you_o with_o what_o colour_n soever_o they_o be_v paint_v over_o and_o though_o man_n boast_v of_o their_o utility_n they_o be_v extreme_o hurtful_a as_o pester_v conscience_n and_o busy_v they_o about_o thing_n which_o god_n have_v not_o ordain_v and_o turn_v they_o aside_o from_o his_o pure_a service_n to_o matter_n of_o nought_o according_o you_o see_v that_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n reject_v service_n especial_o after_o the_o declaration_n which_o himself_o have_v vouchsafe_v to_o make_v of_o his_o holy_a will_n nor_o be_v there_o one_o among_o man_n that_o will_v endure_v his_o servant_n shall_v treat_v he_o in_o that_o manner_n and_o instead_o of_o obey_v his_o order_n and_o cause_v other_o to_o dispatch_v they_o fall_v a_o philosophise_n in_o his_o house_n and_o give_v his_o family_n a_o new_a rule_n to_o observe_v as_o if_o he_o be_v wise_a than_o his_o master_n i_o know_v well_o the_o author_n of_o these_o tradition_n and_o those_o that_o follow_v they_o be_v not_o i_o know_v they_o be_v tradition_n of_o man_n have_v the_o apostle_n advertisement_n we_o shall_v not_o be_v move_v with_o any_o reason_n or_o splendour_n or_o antiquity_n they_o may_v come_v clothe_v with_o if_o you_o will_v have_v i_o receive_v they_o show_v i_o that_o they_o be_v prescription_n of_o god_n institution_n of_o his_o christ_n doctrine_n of_o his_o scripture_n without_o this_o however_o specious_a you_o make_v they_o appear_v to_o i_o i_o shall_v never_o believe_v it_o it_o be_v but_o to_o make_v a_o prey_n of_o i_o and_o your_o diligence_n shall_v have_v no_o effect_n but_o the_o make_v i_o suspect_v they_o so_o much_o the_o more_o thus_o far_o you_o have_v have_v the_o judgement_n of_o as_o great_a divine_n as_o the_o church_n in_o this_o last_o age_n have_v produce_v and_o who_o ever_o think_v there_o be_v not_o reason_n enough_o in_o this_o discourse_n to_o give_v foundation_n sufficient_a to_o tender_a conscience_n at_o least_o to_o suspect_v if_o
