of_o that_o yet_o they_o have_v not_o the_o full_a corn_n in_o the_o ear_n a_o sincere_a respect_n unto_o all_o the_o lord_n command_n but_o the_o thorn_n of_o some_o lust_n or_o other_o grow_v up_o with_o the_o word_n and_o choke_v it_o and_o overtop_n it_o have_v more_o interest_n in_o the_o heart_n than_o the_o word_n have_v draw_v the_o affection_n of_o the_o soul_n more_o to_o they_o than_o because_o they_o have_v some_o knowledge_n and_o belief_n of_o god_n gracious_a intention_n to_o save_v sinner_n by_o the_o death_n of_o his_o son_n and_o the_o general_a promise_n of_o the_o gospel_n especial_o if_o together_o herewith_o they_o have_v but_o a_o form_n of_o godliness_n and_o something_o of_o devotion_n towards_o the_o ordinance_n of_o god_n they_o persuade_v themselves_o that_o they_o be_v the_o believer_n to_o who_o the_o promise_n of_o remission_n of_o sin_n and_o salvation_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v make_v though_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n they_o be_v under_o the_o power_n the_o main_a reason_n i_o conceive_v why_o person_n upon_o their_o general_a belief_n of_o the_o gospel_n have_v this_o confidence_n of_o salvation_n though_o otherwise_o they_o be_v as_o yet_o but_o in_o the_o flesh_n and_o so_o can_v please_v god_n rom._n 8.8_o be_v this_o because_o they_o be_v partial_a in_o the_o scripture_n and_o do_v not_o give_v one_o scripture_n as_o well_o as_o another_o room_n in_o their_o judgement_n and_o affection_n their_o mind_n run_v upon_o such_o scripture_n as_o declare_v christ_n jesus_n to_o have_v come_v into_o the_o world_n to_o save_v sinner_n that_o god_n so_o love_v the_o world_n that_o he_o give_v his_o only_a beget_v son_n that_o whosoever_o believe_v in_o he_o shall_v not_o perish_v but_o have_v everlasting_a life_n that_o he_o that_o confess_v with_o his_o mouth_n the_o lord_n jesus_n and_o believe_v in_o his_o heart_n that_o god_n raise_v he_o from_o the_o dead_a shall_v be_v save_v and_o the_o like_a and_o so_o far_o they_o do_v of_o salvation_n be_v make_v to_o believe_v indefinite_o not_o consider_v that_o it_o be_v tie_v up_o to_o that_o special_a kind_n of_o believe_v which_o work_v by_o love_n as_o other_o scripture_n interpret_v and_o they_o know_v in_o themselves_o that_o they_o do_v believe_v in_o one_o sense_n for_o so_o indeed_o they_o do_v with_o that_o general_a faith_n of_o assent_n thence_o they_o conclude_v confident_o that_o they_o be_v heir_n of_o promise_n and_o heir_n of_o salvation_n as_o well_o as_o any_o and_o do_v as_o very_o think_v they_o be_v go_v to_o heaven_n whereas_o indeed_o they_o be_v in_o the_o way_n to_o hell_n as_o ever_o the_o syrian_n think_v they_o be_v go_v to_o dothan_n while_o they_o be_v blind_o lead_v to_o samariah_n 2_o king_n 6.19_o sect._n 3_o the_o man_n of_o this_o formal_a and_o dead_a faith_n of_o which_o i_o speak_v that_o

thorn_n lust_n and_o sinful_a affection_n may_v grow_v up_o too_o and_o dwell_v together_o in_o the_o same_o man_n but_o then_o there_o be_v other_o word_n of_o the_o same_o lord_n and_o of_o the_o same_o gospel_n of_o salvation_n which_o put_v man_n upon_o deny_v themselves_o to_o please_v the_o lord_n and_o cross_v their_o own_o sinful_a inclination_n and_o will_n that_o they_o may_v fulfil_v the_o will_n of_o the_o lord_n there_o be_v word_n that_o enjoin_v we_o to_o crucify_v the_o old-man_n with_o the_o affection_n and_o lust_n to_o mortify_v our_o member_n which_o be_v upon_o the_o earth_n to_o cut_v off_o the_o right_a hand_n and_o pluck_v out_o the_o right_a eye_n to_o put_v ourselves_o to_o the_o utmost_a extremity_n of_o suffering_n and_o distaste_v the_o flesh_n rather_o than_o to_o harbour_v any_o guest_n in_o the_o soul_n to_o distaste_n our_o dear_a lord_n but_o now_o here_o the_o word_n be_v encounter_v by_o sinful_a affection_n the_o love_n of_o man_n own_o self_n their_o ease_n their_o pleasure_n their_o reputation_n with_o man_n and_o for_o the_o maintenance_n and_o support_v of_o these_o the_o love_n and_o desire_v of_o riches_n take_v place_n with_o they_o and_o their_o desire_n and_o love_n to_o these_o put_v they_o upon_o many_o unlovely_a strain_n to_o compass_v they_o in_o a_o word_n they_o love_v to_o please_v and_o to_o be_v please_v of_o man_n and_o to_o have_v all_o thing_n go_v on_o smooth_o with_o they_o and_o here_o the_o word_n of_o christ_n and_o their_o will_n fall_v cross_a his_o honour_n to_o be_v by_o they_o uphold_v in_o a_o close_o follow_v of_o he_o and_o the_o uphold_v of_o their_o own_o honour_n among_o man_n clash_n christ_n spiritual_a interest_n and_o their_o carnal_a interest_n will_v not_o consist_v but_o one_o must_v give_v way_n if_o they_o will_v please_v the_o lord_n they_o must_v many_o time_n displease_v themselves_o and_o other_o too_o and_o to_o enjoy_v his_o love_n and_o keep_v a_o good_a conscience_n must_v be_v content_a to_o be_v without_o much_o and_o sometime_o to_o loose_v all_o those_o worldly_a accommodation_n which_o the_o flesh_n prize_v very_o much_o and_o however_o the_o other_o part_n of_o the_o word_n and_o lust_n may_v grow_v up_o together_o yet_o this_o part_n of_o the_o word_n and_o lust_n can_v remain_v in_o any_o power_n and_o operation_n in_o the_o same_o subject_n but_o will_v be_v fight_v and_o if_o the_o affection_n as_o a_o three_o party_n side_n with_o lust_n against_o the_o word_n or_o if_o more_o corditial_o adhere_v to_o they_o than_o to_o the_o word_n the_o word_n be_v present_o choke_v and_o overbear_v by_o the_o power_n of_o the_o flesh_n as_o the_o corn_n by_o thorn_n and_o bring_v no_o fruit_n to_o perfection_n these_o be_v the_o man_n and_o this_o their_o character_n who_o be_v the_o hearer_n and_o professor_n of_o the_o word_n of_o the_o gospel_n resemble_v by_o the_o thorny_a ground_n which_o as_o i_o intimate_v before_o go_v a_o step_n further_o than_o those_o that_o do_v believe_v for_o a_o time_n only_o and_o consequent_o must_v not_o only_o be_v such_o as_o do_v in_o a_o sense_n believe_v as_o the_o other_o do_v but_o also_o such_o as_o hold_v out_o and_o persevere_v in_o their_o faith_n unto_o the_o end_n neither_o probable_o be_v that_o the_o reason_n why_o their_o faith_n hold_v out_o rather_o than_o the_o other_o as_o if_o it_o be_v a_o faith_n of_o a_o better_a kind_n or_o constitution_n or_o strong_a than_o they_o but_o rather_o because_o it_o be_v not_o put_v to_o that_o stress_n and_o trial_n which_o the_o other_o faith_n can_v not_o endure_v it_o be_v very_o like_a that_o if_o the_o faith_n of_o the_o thorny-ground_n hearer_n shall_v be_v put_v to_o it_o by_o persecution_n as_o the_o faith_n of_o the_o stony-ground_n hearer_n be_v say_v to_o be_v his_o faith_n may_v give_v in_o and_o fail_v as_o well_o as_o the_o other_o for_o the_o reason_n why_o the_o stony-ground_n hearer_n faith_n fail_v he_o be_v because_o it_o be_v not_o root_v and_o ground_v in_o love_n he_o love_v his_o honour_n his_o estate_n his_o relation_n or_o at_o least_o his_o life_n more_o than_o christ_n which_o whosoever_o do_v can_v be_v his_o disciple_n or_o be_v deem_v worthy_a of_o he_o whatever_o his_o knowledge_n or_o faith_n otherwise_o may_v be_v and_o therefore_o when_o by_o the_o trial_n persecution_n it_o proceed_v from_o the_o same_o cause_n and_o that_o be_v the_o want_n of_o that_o ingredient_n in_o their_o faith_n which_o be_v the_o peculiar_a property_n of_o the_o faith_n of_o god_n elect_n to_o wit_n a_o affectionate_a cleave_v to_o christ_n as_o more_o desirable_a than_o life_n there_o be_v the_o same_o reason_n as_o to_o the_o internal_a cause_n why_o the_o faith_n of_o the_o thorny_a ground-hearer_n fall_v short_a of_o salvation_n and_o that_o be_v the_o want_n of_o that_o mixture_n of_o love_n i_o speak_v of_o for_o though_o they_o may_v believe_v christ_n to_o be_v the_o saviour_n and_o expect_v salvation_n by_o he_o and_o for_o that_o cause_n bear_v some_o good_a affection_n to_o he_o yet_o their_o love_n work_v strong_a to_o riches_n honour_n and_o pleasure_n &_o for_o their_o sake_n to_o way_n and_o thing_n by_o which_o these_o may_v be_v enjoy_v thence_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o the_o lust_n of_o these_o thing_n carry_v it_o against_o christ_n and_o his_o word_n who_o draw_v another_o way_n now_o because_o this_o sort_n of_o man_n may_v hold_v that_o dead_a faith_n which_o they_o have_v and_o the_o profession_n of_o it_o too_o and_o yet_o retain_v their_o worldly_a lust_n also_o yea_o and_o make_v a_o outward_a and_o fleshly_a advantage_n of_o such_o a_o faith_n and_o profession_n many_o time_n thence_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o they_o do_v not_o fall_v away_o as_o the_o other_o but_o persevere_v herein_o unto_o the_o end_n the_o difference_n of_o the_o one_o fall_v and_z the_o other_o standing_z do_v not_o lie_v in_o the_o difference_n of_o their_o faith_n but_o in_o the_o different_a nature_n of_o their_o temptation_n the_o one_o be_v necessitate_v to_o part_n with_o his_o faith_n or_o lust_n the_o some_o scripture_n which_o they_o wrest_v to_o their_o own_o destruction_n therefore_o to_o prevent_v that_o mischief_n for_o the_o future_a as_o much_o as_o may_v be_v as_o i_o have_v in_o the_o former_a part_n of_o my_o discourse_n be_v labour_v to_o deliver_v some_o from_o their_o mistake_n of_o such_o scripture_n as_o promise_v justification_n upon_o believe_v without_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n so_o i_o shall_v here_o also_o add_v a_o few_o word_n to_o save_v they_o from_o the_o danger_n of_o a_o undue_a understanding_n of_o such_o scripture_n as_o represent_v the_o believe_a christ_n to_o be_v the_o son_n of_o god_n and_o that_o he_o die_v and_o rise_v again_o and_o the_o like_a to_o be_v that_o faith_n that_o carry_v life_n and_o salvation_n in_o it_o for_o whereas_o i_o have_v assert_v in_o the_o two_o former_a chapter_n that_o neither_o the_o assent_v to_o the_o truth_n of_o that_o report_n which_o the_o scripture_n make_v touch_v christ_n his_o be_v the_o son_n of_o god_n and_o saviour_n of_o the_o world_n etc._n etc._n nor_o yet_o the_o rely_v on_o he_o as_o such_o for_o salvation_n will_v indeed_o avail_v a_o man_n unto_o salvation_n without_o a_o love_a loyal_a and_o obediential_a cleave_v to_o he_o it_o may_v be_v some_o will_v be_v ready_a to_o object_n and_o say_v do_v not_o the_o scripture_n plain_o say_v that_o these_o thing_n be_v write_v
