they_o to_o take_v heed_n how_o they_o hear_v viz._n the_o letter_n of_o the_o gospel_n for_o to_o he_o that_o have_v shall_v be_v give_v etc._n etc._n now_o to_o interpret_v the_o talent_n by_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n be_v very_o much_o irrelative_a to_o the_o occasion_n of_o christ_n word_n which_o be_v their_o not_o use_v of_o the_o gospel-light_n in_o the_o letter_n of_o it_o and_o what_o a_o incoherency_n do_v it_o introduce_v into_o christ_n word_n luke_n 8.18_o take_v heed_n how_o you_o hear_v for_o to_o he_o that_o have_v shall_v be_v give_v &_o c_o for_o then_o the_o sense_n must_v run_v thus_o take_v heed_n how_o you_o hear_v the_o gospel_n for_o from_o they_o that_o use_v not_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n well_o shall_v be_v take_v away_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n even_o that_o which_o they_o have_v the_o very_a word_n of_o take_v heed_n how_o they_o hear_v seem_v to_o carry_v it_o hither_o that_o the_o talent_n do_v signify_v the_o preach_n of_o the_o gospel_n 2._o this_o very_a sense_n destroy_v his_o stand_a course_n of_o providence_n for_o clear_v it_o be_v that_o as_o christ_n appli_v this_o proverbial_a sentence_n the_o jew_n do_v not_o use_v their_o talent_n well_o now_o if_o by_o talent_n be_v to_o be_v understand_v natural_a ability_n than_o the_o unbelieve_a jew_n do_v not_o use_v their_o natural_a ability_n well_o and_o yet_o they_o have_v the_o letter_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o god_n do_v not_o fail_v to_o reveal_v his_o son_n christ_n to_o they_o else_o how_o can_v they_o be_v unbelieving_a and_o if_o he_o reveal_v his_o son_n to_o such_o as_o do_v not_o use_v their_o natural_a ability_n regular_o where_o be_v mr._n goodwin_n stand_v course_n of_o providence_n of_o reveal_v or_o hide_v his_o son_n christ_n according_a to_o man_n exercise_v or_o not_o exercise_v their_o natural_a ability_n regular_o 3_o their_o talent_n that_o be_v give_v be_v 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d his_o own_o good_n that_o be_v the_o proper_a good_n commodious_a interpretation_n that_o be_v give_v how_o will_v master_n goodwin_n prove_v that_o those_o be_v speak_v of_o christ_n as_o mediator_n but_o rather_o as_o creator_n 10._o john_n 1.9_o and_o that_o of_o he_o we_o receive_v grace_n for_o grace_n but_o where_o shall_v we_o find_v that_o his_o church_n receive_v from_o he_o the_o ability_n of_o nature_n and_o that_o from_o he_o as_o mediator_n now_o he_o must_v prove_v this_o before_o it_o can_v be_v clear_a that_o these_o talent_n signify_v natural_a ability_n 4_o those_o talent_n that_o be_v give_v be_v in_o a_o various_a degree_n to_o diverse_a man_n some_o five_o some_o two_o some_o one_o talon_n but_o how_o can_v mr._n goodwin_n make_v his_o to_o agree_v with_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n if_o he_o consider_v his_o own_o word_n 10._o pag._n 10._o pag._n 10._o that_o all_o man_n by_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n may_v make_v out_o the_o conclusion_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o that_o a_o atonement_n be_v make_v the_o regulate_v of_o our_o life_n which_o he_o can_v no_o way_n prove_v god_n do_v by_o the_o gospel_n in_o any_o proportionable_a discovery_n but_o he_o undertake_v to_o prove_v by_o a_o twofold_a argument_n that_o nature_n bind_v all_o man_n to_o believe_v on_o christ_n if_o reduce_v to_o form_n it_o will_v run_v thus_o if_o nature_n bind_v we_o to_o use_v the_o best_a mean_n for_o our_o welfare_n and_o peace_n than_o it_o bind_v we_o to_o believe_v it_o be_v the_o only_a way_n to_o life_n but_o nature_n bind_v all_o man_n to_o use_v the_o best_a mean_v for_o their_o welfare_n therefore_o etc._n etc._n the_o argument_n be_v plausible_a enough_o if_o he_o have_v not_o himself_o lay_v the_o ground_n of_o its_o confutation_n the_o same_o notion_n will_v answer_v it_o that_o i_o give_v before_o nature_n teach_v no_o man_n to_o use_v any_o mean_n for_o his_o welfare_n but_o what_o he_o know_v to_o be_v in_o such_o a_o tendency_n but_o the_o question_n presuppose_v that_o they_o do_v not_o yet_o know_v and_o when_o they_o come_v to_o know_v true_a then_o they_o be_v bind_v to_o observe_v it_o but_o the_o state_n of_o the_o question_n be_v alter_v a_o second_o argument_n which_o he_o use_v be_v deduce_v from_o act_n 4.12_o where_o the_o apostle_n say_v that_o there_o be_v no_o name_n under_o heaven_n by_o which_o a_o man_n can_v be_v save_v but_o jesus_n of_o nature_n so_o that_o this_o be_v understand_v of_o adult_n for_o as_o for_o infant_n how_o god_n deal_v with_o they_o whether_o they_o be_v save_v by_o faith_n or_o who_o faith_n or_o what_o faith_n or_o how_o i_o leave_v it_o to_o mr._n goodwin_n to_o determine_v let_v he_o understand_v i_o thus_o and_o then_o i_o challenge_v he_o to_o prove_v how_o that_o text_n act_v 4.12_o overthrow_v very_o liable_a to_o scruple_n for_o this_o law_n of_o salvation_n as_o he_o call_v it_o he_o that_o believe_v shall_v be_v save_v must_v be_v consider_v as_o conceive_v in_o god_n only_o in_o his_o mind_n and_o purpose_n whereby_o as_o the_o remonstrant_n say_v he_o do_v certam_fw-la rationem_fw-la statuere_fw-la appoint_v a_o certain_a way_n by_o which_o he_o will_v save_v man_n and_o thus_o that_o it_o respect_v not_o only_a person_n evangelize_v when_o the_o very_a discovery_n of_o this_o to_o we_o be_v evangelization_n and_o the_o discovery_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o it_o become_v a_o obligation_n to_o none_o but_o they_o that_o have_v it_o discover_v to_o they_o but_o in_o his_o next_o i_o expect_v that_o he_o produce_v his_o argument_n in_o form_n that_o i_o may_v know_v what_o he_o intend_v and_o i_o shall_v return_v answer_n but_o he_o proceed_v in_o his_o magnificate_n of_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n thus_o my_o principle_n will_v not_o allow_v we_o to_o gratify_v you_o with_o my_o bel●efe_n of_o your_o position_n which_o be_v that_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n can_v discover_v to_o mankind_n that_o there_o be_v or_o ever_o will_v be_v such_o a_o mediator_n or_o man_n as_o jesus_n christ_n what_o principle_n they_o be_v which_o thus_o obstruct_v his_o faith_n or_o belief_n of_o the_o truth_n of_o god_n be_v best_a know_v to_o himself_o the_o principle_n of_o save_a truth_n will_v tell_v we_o that_o we_o may_v read_v of_o a_o natural_a theology_n but_o of_o a_o natural_a christianity_n no_o where_o this_o be_v reveal_v by_o a_o new_a way_n hence_o the_o jew_n stumble_v at_o it_o and_o the_o greek_n deride_v it_o as_o inconsistent_a with_o their_o philosophical_a and_o natural_a principle_n the_o world_n by_o their_o wisdom_n know_v not_o god_n how_o then_o can_v the_o light_n of_o nature_n discover_v a_o christ_n it_o be_v not_o by_o wisdom_n of_o the_o world_n but_o the_o foolishness_n of_o preach_v that_o he_o save_v man_n and_o that_o the_o preach_n by_o man_n not_o the_o heaven_n for_o this_o last_o preach_v involve_v the_o wisdom_n of_o the_o world_n but_o because_o he_o will_v leave_v no_o stone_n unturned_a he_o by_o way_n of_o concession_n thus_o say_v suppose_v it_o can_v discover_v a_o christ_n in_o such_o particularity_n as_o now_o under_o the_o gospel_n yet_o it_o can_v be_v deny_v but_o that_o it_o may_v so_o far_o discover_v he_o as_o that_o a_o man_n may_v be_v rational_o persuade_v through_o he_o to_o depend_v upon_o god_n for_o the_o pardon_n of_o his_o sin_n and_o salvation_n but_o this_o be_v mere_a trifle_a for_o we_o say_v that_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n alone_o be_v unable_a not_o only_o to_o discover_v a_o christ_n in_o particularity_n but_o at_o all_o and_o upon_o that_o ground_n no_o man_n can_v be_v persuade_v to_o depend_v upon_o god_n through_o he_o for_o thus_o suppose_v that_o a_o man_n know_v that_o christ_n be_v it_o be_v strange_a that_o he_o shall_v recede_v from_o the_o first_o position_n and_o suppose_v that_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n do_v not_o and_o can_v not_o discover_v that_o such_o a_o man_n as_o christ_n ever_o be_v and_o yet_o to_o suppose_v that_o by_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n a_o man_n may_v be_v persuade_v to_o depend_v upon_o god_n for_o life_n through_o christ_n but_o he_o attempt_v to_o prove_v that_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n do_v discover_v so_o much_o as_o that_o man_n may_v be_v so_o rational_o persuade_v to_o depend_v on_o god_n through_o christ_n for_o life_n and_o this_o he_o prove_v by_o two_o argument_n 1._o his_o first_o argument_n be_v from_o the_o jew_n who_o he_o say_v the_o sum_n of_o what_o they_o believe_v concern_v christ_n be_v this_o that_o god_n have_v find_v out_o a_o way_n and_o please_v himself_o in_o a_o mean_n how_o to_o show_v mercy_n and_o forgive_v sin_n and_o save_v their_o soul_n that_o put_v their_o trust_n in_o he_o and_o live_v righteous_o yet_o they_o believe_v to_o salvation_n though_o christ_n not_o discover_v to_o they_o in_o such_o particularity_n as_o now_o wherein_o he_o do_v egregious_o prevaricate_v for_o 1_o that_o which_o he_o be_v to_o prove_v be_v this_o that_o or_o all_o of_o these_o do_v infer_v a_o dependence_n upon_o god_n for_o life_n through_o christ_n 2_o suppose_v it_o do_v so_o what_o pertinency_n have_v this_o instance_n to_o the_o case_n in_o
