and_o that_o they_o be_v not_o limit_v exclusive_o to_o their_o person_n but_o in_o they_o do_v belong_v to_o the_o whole_a succession_n of_o the_o clergy_n for_o however_v the_o apostle_n may_v be_v with_o christ_n he_o can_v not_o be_v personal_o with_o they_o so_o much_o as_o unto_o their_o death_n much_o less_o unto_o the_o end_n of_o the_o world_n be_v so_o short_o upon_o the_o speech_n of_o these_o word_n to_o ascend_v up_o into_o heaven_n whereof_o they_o themselves_o be_v vndeniable_a witness_n it_o be_v likewise_o due_o to_o be_v consider_v that_o christ_n by_o his_o promise_n lo_n i_o be_o with_o you_o always_o even_o unto_o the_o end_n of_o the_o world_n intend_v some_o benefit_n to_o the_o church_n which_o shall_v be_v of_o no_o less_o continuance_n than_o the_o church_n apostle_n then_o have_v the_o church_n ever_o since_o the_o death_n of_o the_o apostle_n be_v without_o these_o office_n which_o amount_v to_o no_o less_o than_o that_o there_o have_v be_v no_o church_n since_o their_o decease_n or_o if_o they_o be_v not_o to_o end_v with_o the_o apostle_n but_o have_v always_o be_v and_o be_v still_o to_o be_v exercise_v unto_o the_o end_n of_o the_o world_n than_o it_o can_v be_v deny_v but_o there_o ever_o have_v be_v and_o ever_o must_v be_v fit_a person_n who_o like_o the_o apostle_n must_v have_v a_o just_a power_n to_o dispense_v these_o benefit_n or_o exercise_v these_o office_n for_o no_o less_o can_v be_v conceive_v to_o have_v be_v intend_v by_o christ_n in_o his_o promise_n of_o be_v with_o the_o apostle_n always_o even_o unto_o the_o end_n of_o the_o world_n and_o we_o shall_v have_v no_o temptation_n to_o suspect_v this_o interpretation_n of_o the_o promise_n when_o we_o shall_v consider_v first_o that_o by_o the_o end_n of_o the_o world_n that_o state_n of_o affair_n be_v to_o be_v understand_v which_o begin_v exact_o at_o christ_n resurrection_n when_o all_o power_n be_v give_v he_o in_o heaven_n and_o earth_n which_o be_v to_o continue_v to_o the_o end_n of_o the_o world_n or_o his_o come_n to_o judgement_n next_o that_o the_o promise_v make_v unto_o the_o apostle_n have_v respect_n unto_o this_o state_n and_o therefore_o the_o benefit_n promise_v namely_o preach_v baptism_n etc._n etc._n be_v to_o endure_v unto_o the_o full_a determination_n of_o the_o same_o three_o that_o see_v christ_n can_v not_o it_o for_o if_o the_o promise_n of_o christ_n be_v always_o with_o the_o apostle_n be_v to_o be_v understand_v of_o this_o mission_n of_o the_o spirit_n upon_o they_o than_o it_o will_v follow_v that_o christ_n be_v still_o to_o be_v thus_o present_a with_o the_o church_n and_o that_o extraordinary_a gift_n do_v still_o continue_v or_o that_o he_o who_o promise_v be_v not_o faithful_a and_o meet_a person_n to_o mediate_v between_o god_n and_o the_o people_n to_o pray_v for_o and_o bless_v they_o in_o the_o name_n of_o christ_n to_o help_v their_o infirmity_n by_o compose_v for_o they_o a_o liturgy_n according_a to_o the_o pattern_n of_o the_o apostle_n of_o who_o liturgy_n several_a passage_n do_v yet_o remain_v and_o the_o holy_a ghost_n do_v still_o empower_v the_o church_n to_o ordain_v and_o consecrate_v person_n for_o the_o ministerial_a office_n for_o the_o edify_v of_o the_o body_n of_o christ_n who_o when_o ordain_v be_v bind_v to_o take_v heed_n to_o themselves_o and_o unto_o all_o the_o flock_n over_o which_o the_o holy_a ghost_n have_v make_v they_o overseer_n to_o feed_v the_o church_n of_o god_n chap._n vi_o of_o the_o spirit_n agency_n in_o respect_n of_o the_o clergy_n etc._n etc._n have_v endeavour_v to_o demonstrate_v that_o the_o true_a sense_n of_o christ_n promise_n in_o be_v with_o the_o apostle_n do_v respect_v that_o authority_n that_o the_o holy_a ghost_n give_v they_o for_o appoint_v a_o settle_a ministry_n in_o the_o church_n while_o militant_a upon_o earth_n in_o subserviency_n to_o our_o present_a purpose_n it_o may_v not_o be_v unuseful_a to_o observe_v that_o among_o all_o those_o office_n which_o the_o holy_a ghost_n perform_v for_o the_o church_n there_o be_v none_o wherein_o he_o seem_v to_o be_v more_o interest_v or_o to_o have_v a_o great_a agency_n than_o in_o the_o qualify_a and_o separation_n of_o person_n for_o the_o priesthood_n which_o work_n indeed_o be_v so_o peculiar_a to_o the_o spirit_n and_o so_o necessary_a for_o this_o purpose_n that_o even_o the_o great_a pastor_n and_o bishop_n of_o soul_n become_v not_o a_o preacher_n of_o his_o own_o gospel_n till_o he_o be_v thereunto_o anoint_v and_o consecrate_a by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n luke_n 4.18_o and_o when_o the_o same_o great_a bishop_n
the_o contemner_n shall_v be_v so_o far_o move_v with_o what_o have_v be_v say_v as_o to_o quit_v this_o first_o pretence_n of_o their_o contempt_n yet_o their_o great_a desire_n to_o finish_v what_o they_o have_v begin_v will_v quick_o furnish_v they_o with_o other_o pretence_n and_o here_o it_o will_v be_v easy_a to_o suppose_v they_o assault_v the_o credit_n of_o the_o clergy_n with_o the_o infect_v and_o it_o be_v likewise_o so_o inconsistent_a with_o the_o work_n or_o office_n of_o the_o ministry_n that_o i_o be_o persuade_v there_o be_v none_o of_o that_o call_v can_v thereof_o be_v guilty_a or_o at_o least_o not_o to_o that_o degree_n which_o a_o malign_v world_n will_v render_v they_o for_o if_o we_o may_v suppose_v the_o present_a clergy_n to_o be_v man_n of_o so_o much_o understanding_n as_o to_o know_v the_o nature_n of_o idleness_n and_o industry_n that_o according_a to_o a_o prophet_n of_o their_o own_o there_o be_v nothing_o more_o troublesome_a to_o a_o good_a mind_n than_o to_o do_v nothing_o that_o idleness_n be_v no_o less_o devoid_a of_o comfort_n than_o of_o profit_n while_o both_o be_v the_o genâ—â—n_a income_n of_o industry_n that_o beside_o the_o furtherance_n of_o their_o estate_n the_o mind_n do_v both_o delight_n and_o better_v itself_o by_o exercise_n that_o it_o fare_v with_o most_o as_o with_o the_o man_n after_o god_n own_o heart_n who_o no_o temptation_n dare_v assail_v while_o he_o be_v take_v up_o with_o business_n of_o importance_n and_o the_o public_a care_n of_o state_n etc._n etc._n when_o this_o and_o infinite_a more_o become_v the_o matter_n of_o a_o clergyman_n thought_n or_o indeed_o of_o any_o he_o can_v but_o have_v all_o idleness_n and_o sloth_n not_o only_o under_o a_o jealous_a but_o a_o detestable_a aspect_n and_o yet_o its_o sordid_a nature_n do_v not_o render_v it_o fit_a for_o our_o avoidance_n than_o its_o consequence_n which_o though_o to_o all_o be_v very_o pernicious_a yet_o to_o none_o more_o than_o to_o the_o clergy_n as_o may_v be_v collect_v from_o those_o fearful_a commination_n so_o frequent_o denounce_v against_o such_o pastor_n as_o through_o their_o idleness_n destroy_v and_o scatter_v the_o sheep_n of_o god_n pasture_n to_o who_o the_o lord_n say_v express_o i_o will_v visit_v you_o for_o the_o wickedness_n of_o your_o work_n and_o the_o remnant_n of_o my_o sheep_n will_v i_o gather_v together_o and_o bring_v they_o to_o their_o fold_n and_o i_o will_v set_v up_o shepherd_n over_o they_o that_o will_v feed_v they_o and_o the_o threaten_a reach_n all_o those_o shepherd_n who_o take_v more_o care_n to_o feed_v themselves_o than_o the_o flock_n who_o eat_v the_o fat_a and_o clothe_v themselves_o with_o the_o wool_n but_o look_v not_o to_o the_o strengthen_n of_o the_o weak_a the_o heal_n of_o the_o sick_a to_o bind_v up_o the_o break_a to_o bring_v home_o again_o that_o which_o be_v drive_v away_o and_o to_o inquire_v after_o that_o which_o be_v lose_v which_o chapter_n be_v inspire_v to_o this_o purpose_n to_o this_o may_v be_v add_v st._n paul_n advice_n to_o the_o asian_a clergy_n act._n 20.28_o take_v heed_n to_o yourselves_o and_o to_o all_o the_o flock_n over_o which_o the_o holy_a ghost_n have_v make_v you_o overseer_n to_o feed_v the_o church_n of_o god_n which_o he_o have_v purchase_v with_o his_o own_o blood_n and_o 2_o tim._n 4.1_o i_o charge_v thou_o before_o god_n and_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n who_o shall_v judge_v the_o quick_a and_o the_o dead_a when_o he_o appear_v in_o his_o kingdom_n preach_v the_o word_n be_v those_o many_o earnest_a exhortation_n of_o the_o holy_a apostle_n for_o its_o prevention_n and_o amendment_n we_o may_v charitable_o conclude_v that_o they_o will_v not_o dare_v to_o take_v part_n who_o they_o have_v take_v the_o charge_n and_o one_o day_n must_v give_v a_o account_n if_o we_o may_v yet_o further_o presume_v that_o the_o clergy_n do_v in_o some_o tolerable_a manner_n comprehend_v the_o importance_n of_o those_o several_a title_n with_o which_o the_o holy_a ghost_n have_v invest_v they_o and_o how_o that_o they_o be_v as_o so_o many_o memorial_n and_o monitor_n of_o labour_n diligence_n and_o care_n in_o short_a if_o we_o may_v presume_v the_o clergy_n like_o other_o man_n to_o wear_v their_o eye_n in_o their_o head_n and_o apprehend_v and_o consider_v such_o obvious_a and_o plain_a thing_n as_o we_o now_o speak_v it_o may_v be_v hope_v upon_o the_o stock_n of_o common_a ingenuity_n that_o they_o will_v never_o suffer_v themselves_o to_o run_v to_o moss_n or_o let_v god_n house_n drop_v through_o by_o reason_n of_o the_o idleness_n of_o their_o hand_n or_o endure_v to_o see_v the_o flock_n depend_v upon_o their_o feed_n to_o grow_v cold_a in_o their_o zeal_n droop_v in_o their_o courage_n faint_v in_o their_o spiritual_a strength_n and_o enfeeble_v in_o all_o their_o grace_n and_o all_o this_o to_o please_v a_o vice_n which_o be_v unmanly_a in_o itself_o foul_o derogatory_n to_o the_o honour_n of_o their_o call_v contradictory_n of_o their_o title_n and_o in_o they_o of_o more_o dreadful_a consequence_n than_o it_o can_v possible_o be_v in_o any_o other_o in_o the_o last_o place_n if_o we_o may_v suppose_v the_o clergy_n to_o remember_v and_o make_v conscience_n of_o that_o promise_n of_o faithful_a diligence_n which_o they_o make_v to_o god_n and_o the_o church_n when_o they_o be_v receive_v into_o holy_a order_n this_o alone_a will_v be_v sucffiient_a effectual_o to_o bind_v they_o to_o bend_v their_o whole_a endeavour_n without_o fraud_n or_o sophistication_n to_o the_o due_a discharge_n of_o their_o office_n be_v well_o assure_v that_o small_a benefit_n will_v accrue_v to_o the_o church_n from_o their_o ability_n if_o they_o be_v not_o faithful_a for_o the_o clergy_n can_v be_v ignorant_a that_o their_o sufficiency_n without_o endeavour_n to_o do_v that_o good_a which_o their_o place_n require_v be_v no_o better_a than_o wrap_v the_o talon_n in_o a_o napkin_n industry_n with_o lesser_a part_n be_v more_o serviceable_a to_o religion_n than_o great_a learning_n without_o it_o and_o a_o idle_a be_v little_o better_a than_o a_o blind_a guide_n and_o be_v persuade_v that_o these_o thing_n be_v the_o matter_n of_o the_o clergy_n serious_a meditation_n i_o can_v imagine_v they_o shall_v ever_o be_v guilty_a of_o that_o idleness_n which_o so_o malapert_o be_v lay_v at_o their_o door_n but_o i_o be_o rather_o induce_v to_o believe_v that_o that_o which_o in_o they_o bear_v this_o odious_a name_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o the_o regular_a performance_n of_o their_o duty_n partly_o occasion_v by_o their_o carriage_n who_o prefer_v the_o please_a of_o some_o man_n caprice_n before_o the_o observation_n of_o their_o rule_n in_o which_o rank_n it_o may_v be_v no_o great_a iniquity_n to_o place_v all_o those_o who_o make_v all_o other_o part_n of_o the_o church_n tributary_n to_o the_o pulpit_n by_o which_o they_o have_v occasion_v a_o capricious_a sort_n of_o people_n to_o conclude_v all_o public_a service_n to_o be_v preach_v and_o to_o esteem_v all_o those_o to_o be_v dumb_a dog_n who_o open_v not_o as_o often_o as_o they_o please_v and_o in_o a_o sense_n different_a to_o the_o apostle_n preach_v the_o word_n in_o season_n and_o out_o of_o season_n but_o as_o for_o my_o own_o part_n when_o i_o observe_v our_o clergy_n to_o pray_v preach_v and_o catechise_v as_o the_o church_n enjoin_v and_o direct_v they_o
ordain_v his_o apostle_n it_o be_v according_a to_o the_o tenor_n of_o his_o own_o ordination_n as_o my_o father_n send_v i_o so_o send_v i_o you_o and_o to_o show_v wherein_o the_o similitude_n apostle_n have_v their_o mission_n from_o christ_n and_o be_v to_o enter_v upon_o their_o ministry_n they_o also_o be_v consecrate_a by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n which_o they_o receive_v not_o only_o to_o gift_n and_o enable_v their_o person_n but_o also_o to_o empower_v they_o for_o their_o office_n as_o be_v undeniable_o evident_a upon_o the_o account_n of_o the_o word_n immediate_o follow_v receive_v you_o the_o holy_a ghost_n which_o actual_o instate_v upon_o they_o the_o power_n of_o the_o key_n it_o be_v true_a after_o they_o have_v thus_o receive_v the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o be_v commission_v to_o all_o the_o office_n of_o the_o clergy_n the_o apostle_n be_v not_o immediate_o to_o fall_v upon_o their_o execution_n but_o be_v bid_v to_o stay_v at_o jerusalem_n till_o they_o shall_v receive_v such_o miraculous_a gift_n by_o the_o visible_a descent_n of_o the_o spirit_n as_o shall_v render_v their_o entrance_n upon_o the_o ministry_n more_o solemn_a and_o remarkable_a
