be_v tell_v as_o you_o shall_v have_v old_a man_n in_o a_o tale_n of_o less_o than_o a_o hour_n long_o run_v over_o all_o their_o life_n verse_n 11._o who_o know_v the_o power_n of_o thy_o anger_n even_o according_a to_o thy_o fear_n so_o be_v thy_o wrath_n the_o prophet_n in_o this_o 11._o verse_n conclude_v his_o complaint_n and_o in_o the_o same_o complain_v of_o the_o dulness_n of_o mankind_n that_o whereas_o god_n show_v such_o sign_n of_o his_o wrath_n they_o have_v no_o sense_n or_o understanding_n of_o the_o power_n thereof_o the_o second_o part_n of_o this_o verse_n be_v somewhat_o doubtful_a word_n for_o word_n in_o the_o hebrew_n it_o be_v thus_o and_o according_a to_o thy_o fear_n thy_o wrath_n our_o translatour_n as_o you_o hear_v translate_v it_o otherwise_o and_o therein_o follow_v learned_a man_n that_o go_v before_o they_o and_o the_o word_n if_o necessity_n require_v it_o will_v bear_v such_o a_o construction_n and_o teach_v a_o profitable_a truth_n to_o wit_n that_o howsoever_o the_o wicked_a do_v not_o know_v the_o 〈◊〉_d of_o god_n wrath_n yet_o those_o that_o fear_n god_n know_v and_o understand_v the_o same_o but_o i_o have_v rather_o here_o take_v the_o word_n more_o simple_o and_o read_v they_o thus_o who_o know_v the_o 〈◊〉_d of_o thy_o anger_n and_o of_o thy_o power_n wrath_n according_a to_o thy_o fear_n that_o be_v to_o say_v how_o rare_a a_o thing_n be_v it_o to_o find_v a_o man_n that_o have_v any_o true_a sense_n and_o understanding_n of_o this_o thy_o mighty_a wrath_n or_o that_o make_v any_o religious_a use_n thereof_o the_o first_o doctrine_n we_o hence_o observe_v be_v that_o christian_n ought_v to_o mark_v and_o observe_v the_o power_n and_o force_v of_o god_n wrath_n in_o all_o those_o particular_n wherein_o he_o show_v it_o it_o be_v not_o enough_o for_o we_o to_o know_v that_o god_n be_v a_o merciful_a god_n and_o love_v and_o gracious_a but_o we_o must_v know_v also_o that_o he_o be_v a_o angry_a and_o a_o wrathful_a god_n yea_o that_o he_o be_v exceed_o angry_a when_o he_o be_v provoke_v the_o unto_o and_o therefore_o we_o must_v not_o only_o consider_v and_o understand_v the_o sign_n token_n and_o effect_n of_o his_o love_n and_o kindness_n in_o the_o world_n but_o the_o sign_n of_o his_o wrath_n also_o for_o in_o both_o he_o manifest_v himself_o and_o from_o both_o he_o look_v to_o reap_v glory_n and_o he_o be_v no_o less_o powerful_a in_o the_o one_o then_o in_o the_o other_o and_o in_o our_o life_n and_o conversation_n there_o be_v as_o much_o use_n of_o the_o one_o as_o of_o the_o other_o yea_o a_o man_n shall_v never_o be_v able_a to_o discern_v or_o make_v any_o good_a and_o true_a use_n of_o god_n love_n that_o do_v not_o first_o regard_n mark_v and_o labour_n to_o understand_v his_o wrath_n the_o second_o doctrine_n be_v that_o it_o be_v not_o enough_o to_o know_v that_o god_n be_v angry_a but_o that_o his_o anger_n be_v powerful_a he_o be_v mighty_a in_o his_o wrath_n vanae_fw-la sine_fw-la viribus_fw-la irae_fw-la that_o anger_n that_o be_v without_o strength_n be_v nothing_o and_o therefore_o to_o be_v fear_v and_o tremble_v at_o many_o of_o we_o can_v talk_v of_o and_o observe_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n in_o this_o or_o that_o particular_a but_o we_o use_v to_o make_v a_o matter_n of_o nothing_o of_o it_o we_o be_v not_o ordinary_o affect_v with_o it_o so_o much_o as_o with_o the_o anger_n of_o any_o man_n that_o have_v but_o the_o least_o power_n to_o hurt_v us._n but_o the_o less_o we_o mark_v and_o know_v it_o here_o the_o more_o we_o shall_v know_v and_o feel_v it_o hereafter_o the_o three_o doctrine_n that_o the_o greatness_n and_o force_n of_o god_n wrath_n shine_v and_o show_v itself_o in_o the_o mortality_n of_o mankind_n aforesaid_a so_o that_o if_o there_o be_v no_o other_o argument_n to_o show_v that_o god_n be_v angry_a and_o that_o his_o anger_n be_v exceed_o powerful_a the_o general_a mortality_n of_o mankind_n be_v sufficient_a to_o show_v the_o same_o who_o can_v deny_v that_o he_o be_v angry_a when_o he_o drown_v the_o whole_a world_n when_o he_o destroy_v the_o first_o bear_v in_o egypt_n when_o he_o overwhelm_v the_o host_n of_o the_o egyptian_n in_o the_o red_a sea_n when_o he_o destroy_v all_o his_o own_o people_n in_o the_o wilderness_n that_o come_v out_o of_o egypt_n very_o if_o we_o can_v well_o consider_v of_o the_o matter_n it_o can_v be_v no_o less_o sign_n of_o god_n wrath_n that_o at_o some_o time_n or_o other_o after_o after_o some_o manner_n or_o other_o every_o man_n in_o the_o world_n must_v die_v and_o that_o so_o many_o age_n before_o we_o be_v dead_a the_o four_o doctrine_n that_o it_o be_v a_o rare_a thing_n for_o any_o man_n to_o conceive_v aright_o or_o to_o understand_v that_o god_n be_v angry_a or_o that_o there_o be_v any_o such_o fear_n in_o his_o anger_n many_o so_o live_v and_o follow_v such_o course_n as_o if_o they_o be_v persuade_v that_o god_n can_v not_o be_v angry_a or_o that_o if_o he_o be_v angry_a it_o be_v as_o easy_a a_o matter_n to_o please_v he_o as_o a_o child_n hence_o when_o they_o have_v over-shot_a themselves_o in_o any_o sin_n if_o they_o say_v god_n forgive_v i_o or_o i_o cry_v god_n mercy_n they_o think_v all_o be_v well_o and_o they_o shall_v never_o hear_v more_o of_o the_o matter_n when_o man_n trespass_n against_o a_o man_n if_o they_o think_v they_o have_v hinder_v themselves_o by_o it_o how_o careful_a how_o diligent_a be_v they_o to_o pacify_v his_o anger_n and_o to_o seek_v to_o regain_v his_o favour_n and_o good_a will_v again_o whereas_o the_o neglect_n hereof_o to_o god-ward_o when_o they_o have_v offend_v he_o show_v evident_o that_o they_o little_o regard_v his_o anger_n or_o esteem_v it_o not_o prejudicial_a at_o all_o to_o they_o the_o five_o doctrine_n that_o it_o be_v not_o enough_o to_o know_v the_o force_n of_o god_n wrath_n but_o we_o must_v make_v a_o right_a use_n thereof_o we_o must_v thereby_o be_v stir_v up_o to_o fear_v the_o lord_n and_o to_o tremble_v before_o his_o majesty_n and_o take_v heed_n how_o any_o thing_n may_v either_o incense_v or_o continue_v his_o anger_n and_o we_o shall_v take_v heed_n also_o how_o his_o anger_n provoke_v we_o to_o anger_n or_o to_o any_o sin_n whatsoever_o that_o may_v further_o provoke_v he_o verse_n 12._o so_o right_o to_o judge_v and_o discern_v of_o that_o time_n that_o we_o have_v to_o live_v in_o this_o world_n this_o number_n of_o our_o day_n consist_v in_o these_o particular_n 1._o in_o a_o due_a consideration_n of_o the_o uttermost_a time_n that_o we_o can_v hope_v to_o live_v here_o which_o be_v but_o till_o we_o be_v 70._o or_o 80._o year_n of_o age._n not_o one_o of_o five_o thousand_o life_n long_o or_o if_o he_o live_v some_o few_o day_n or_o year_n long_o his_o life_n be_v unto_o he_o but_o as_o death_n the_o world_n grow_v weary_a of_o he_o and_o he_o of_o the_o world_n so_o that_o we_o so_o live_v here_o as_o man_n that_o make_v account_n to_o live_v no_o long_o 2._o in_o compare_v the_o smallnesse_n of_o this_o number_n with_o that_o number_n of_o day_n that_o we_o shall_v live_v in_o another_o world_n alas_o what_o be_v eighty_o year_n to_o eternity_n when_o we_o shall_v lie_v a_o thousand_o thousand_o year_n and_o be_v as_o far_o from_o death_n as_o the_o first_o day_n we_o begin_v to_o live_v 3._o in_o consider_v how_o much_o of_o our_o time_n be_v already_o past_a that_o can_v be_v revoke_v and_o that_o we_o must_v deduct_v and_o draw_v out_o of_o that_o number_n of_o 70._o or_o 80._o some_o of_o we_o have_v spend_v of_o the_o main_a sum_n 10._o 20._o 30._o 40._o year_n and_o so_o the_o one_o and_o
punish_v we_o to_o grieve_v and_o vex_v he_o we_o can_v make_v he_o any_o otherwise_o to_o repent_v of_o the_o evil_a that_o he_o have_v do_v unto_o we_o concern_v thy_o servant_n in_o these_o word_n be_v imply_v a_o motive_n to_o stir_v up_o the_o lord_n to_o grant_v this_o request_n as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v we_o be_v thy_o servant_n ergò_fw-la let_v it_o repent_v thou_o concern_v us._n that_o those_o that_o be_v not_o the_o servant_n of_o god_n have_v no_o cause_n to_o hope_v that_o god_n will_v repent_v he_o of_o any_o evil_n towards_o they_o but_o they_o be_v to_o expect_v rather_o evil_a upon_o evil_n and_o judgement_n upon_o judgement_n till_o they_o come_v to_o everlasting_a judgement_n verse_n 14._o oh_o satisfy_v we_o early_o with_o thy_o mercy_n that_o we_o may_v rejoice_v and_o be_v glad_a all_o our_o day_n hitherto_o the_o prophet_n pray_v for_o reconciliation_n itself_o now_o he_o pray_v for_o the_o feel_n and_o effectual_a fruit_n of_o it_o these_o feeling_n and_o effectual_a fruit_n of_o it_o be_v a_o lively_a sense_n of_o god_n mercy_n and_o a_o fullness_n of_o joy_n arise_v and_o issue_v therefrom_o for_o the_o child_n of_o god_n can_v have_v no_o hope_n of_o comfort_n but_o in_o the_o hope_n of_o god_n reconciliation_n nor_o hope_v of_o god_n reconciliation_n to_o he_o but_o in_o the_o sense_n of_o his_o mercy_n and_o where_o there_o be_v a_o lively_a and_o full_a sense_n of_o his_o mercy_n there_o can_v but_o be_v sound_a solid_a and_o last_a joy_n and_o delight_n in_o that_o soul_n where_o note_n also_o that_o god_n child_n be_v not_o wont_a to_o content_v themselves_o with_o a_o mere_a fancy_n and_o imagination_n of_o god_n savour_n but_o they_o be_v never_o at_o rest_n till_o they_o feel_v it_o in_o the_o sign_n and_o fruit_n of_o it_o now_o for_o this_o mercy_n the_o prophet_n pray_v 1._o in_o general_a in_o this_o verse_n 2._o in_o special_a in_o the_o next_o in_o the_o general_a there_o be_v a_o petition_n and_o a_o reason_n thereof_o render_v the_o petition_n be_v for_o mercy_n wherein_o he_o pray_v 1._o for_o the_o grace_n itself_o 2._o for_o the_o measure_n of_o it_o 3._o for_o expedition_n in_o the_o grant_n of_o it_o the_o first_o act_n or_o effect_v of_o reconciliation_n be_v the_o work_n of_o mercy_n when_o the_o lord_n manifest_v that_o he_o be_v affect_v with_o compassion_n towards_o those_o servant_n of_o he_o who_o he_o have_v former_o afflict_v whence_o we_o note_v 1._o that_o there_o be_v no_o cause_n to_o hope_v that_o god_n be_v reconcile_v unto_o we_o till_o he_o some_o way_n or_o may_v have_v the_o sense_n and_o feel_n of_o it_o betimes_o where_o observe_v we_o 1._o a_o difference_n between_o god_n child_n and_o wicked_a worldling_n god_n child_n desire_v to_o have_v god_n mercy_n betimes_o whereas_o the_o wicked_a put_v it_o of_o still_o from_o time_n to_o time_n they_o desire_v with_o balaam_n num._n 23._o 10._o to_o have_v it_o in_o the_o end_n but_o they_o care_v not_o for_o it_o early_o 2._o that_o those_o that_o will_v be_v satisfy_v early_o with_o god_n mercy_n must_v early_o repent_v and_o early_o seek_v after_o it_o and_o early_o desire_v and_o pray_v for_o it_o the_o reason_n follow_v that_o we_o may_v rejoice_v and_o be_v glad_a all_o our_o day_n whence_o we_o note_v 1._o that_o god_n child_n may_v lawful_o desire_v to_o rejoice_v and_o be_v any_o other_o if_o the_o almighty_a wound_n we_o in_o his_o wrath_n who_o can_v heal_v we_o or_o if_o any_o shall_v heal_v one_o wound_n shall_v we_o not_o have_v cause_n to_o fear_v two_o for_o that_o one_o to_o rejoice_v in_o any_o thing_n else_o when_o god_n be_v angry_a with_o we_o and_o smite_v we_o be_v as_o if_o whilst_o we_o be_v in_o the_o paw_n of_o a_o lion_n and_o ready_a to_o be_v devour_v we_o shall_v then_o be_v delight_v with_o the_o frisk_n and_o gambol_n of_o ape_n and_o monkey_n to_o seek_v for_o comfort_n and_o delight_n in_o any_o thing_n else_o whilst_o god_n be_v angry_a with_o we_o be_v as_o vain_a as_o if_o a_o man_n in_o his_o drought_n be_v keep_v from_o water_n shall_v think_v to_o quench_v his_o thirst_n by_o drink_v of_o brine_n the_o use_n hereof_o 1._o this_o shall_v teach_v we_o in_o our_o misery_n and_o affliction_n in_o the_o first_o place_n to_o labour_n to_o see_v god_n hand_n in_o they_o that_o it_o be_v god_n that_o chasten_v and_o afflict_v and_o make_v we_o sorrowful_a and_o when_o we_o see_v that_o it_o shall_v teach_v we_o to_o fly_v to_o he_o for_o comfort_n and_o ease_n and_o never_o to_o expect_v it_o elsewhere_a yea_o herein_o we_o shall_v in_o our_o affliction_n approve_v ourselves_o to_o be_v god_n child_n if_o we_o can_v seek_v to_o he_o for_o ease_n and_o comfort_n that_o have_v smite_v we_o and_o the_o contrary_n be_v a_o sign_n of_o a_o graceless_a child_n who_o at_o that_o time_n that_o he_o know_v his_o father_n be_v exceed_o wrath_a with_o he_o and_o have_v be_v correct_v by_o he_o will_v never_o seek_v to_o he_o but_o sport_n and_o delight_v himself_o with_o the_o servant_n or_o with_o dog_n 2._o in_o comfort_v other_o that_o be_v afflict_v under_o the_o sense_n of_o god_n wrath_n it_o shall_v teach_v we_o to_o speak_v in_o that_o manner_n to_o they_o that_o they_o may_v discern_v that_o god_n speak_v in_o and_o by_o we_o and_o that_o that_o comfort_n that_o we_o desire_v to_o possess_v they_o with_o be_v a_o divine_a comfort_n and_o have_v his_o ground_n from_o god_n own_o word_n else_o all_o comfort_n will_v be_v but_o vain_a yea_o we_o shall_v show_v ourselves_o but_o lewd_a and_o profane_a person_n if_o we_o shall_v endeavour_n to_o comfort_v god_n child_n by_o any_o other_o kind_n of_o comfort_n then_o that_o which_o proceed_v from_o god_n this_o be_v to_o teach_v they_o to_o despise_v god_n as_o it_o be_v a_o despise_n of_o one_o parent_n for_o a_o child_n whilst_o his_o
better_o half_n be_v go_v 4._o in_o consider_v the_o uncertainty_n of_o those_o day_n that_o be_v to_o come_v that_o there_o be_v not_o a_o day_n nor_o a_o hour_n that_o we_o can_v make_v any_o certain_a reckon_n off_o that_o it_o shall_v be_v a_o day_n or_o a_o hour_n unto_o we_o it_o be_v the_o present_a instant_n only_o that_o we_o be_v sure_o off_o 5._o in_o make_v account_n as_o for_o the_o time_n past_a so_o for_o the_o time_n to_o come_v that_o a_o great_a part_n of_o it_o shall_v be_v spend_v in_o sorrow_n and_o travail_n and_o pain_n and_o distraction_n so_o that_o if_o we_o shall_v deduct_v all_o those_o day_n which_o when_o they_o be_v come_v we_o shall_v wish_v they_o be_v go_v and_o before_o they_o do_v come_v we_o wish_v they_o may_v never_o come_v it_o will_v diminish_v the_o main_a sum_n exceed_o the_o second_o point_n be_v the_o person_n for_o who_o this_o grace_n be_v desire_v the_o prophet_n desire_v it_o for_o himself_o and_o for_o all_o god_n child_n teach_v we_o say_v he_o to_o number_v our_o day_n whence_o observe_v we_o that_o it_o concern_v every_o child_n of_o god_n to_o be_v skilful_a herein_o even_o in_o the_o number_n of_o his_o day_n that_o be_v to_o consider_v serious_o of_o the_o shortness_n and_o uncertainty_n of_o his_o life_n in_o this_o world_n and_o according_o to_o make_v reckon_v and_o account_n of_o his_o time_n here_o so_o that_o the_o few_o our_o day_n be_v the_o better_a use_n we_o shall_v make_v of_o they_o the_o more_o uncertain_a our_o time_n to_o come_v be_v the_o better_a we_o shall_v employ_v the_o time_n present_a for_o those_o thing_n that_o we_o number_n and_o reckon_v we_o use_v to_o make_v reckon_v off_o and_o those_o thing_n that_o we_o make_v reckon_v of_o we_o do_v not_o negligent_o and_o careless_o spend_v so_o that_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n teach_v we_o to_o number_n and_o reckon_v our_o day_n teach_v we_o therein_o to_o make_v reckon_v of_o they_o and_o in_o that_o regard_n not_o to_o misspend_v they_o now_o first_o this_o condemn_v the_o practice_n of_o most_o man_n especial_o our_o gentleman_n and_o many_o of_o their_o servant_n who_o care_v not_o how_o they_o pass_v away_o day_n after_o day_n and_o week_n after_o week_n as_o though_o nothing_o be_v more_o troublesome_a to_o they_o then_o the_o day_n present_a to_o day_n they_o wish_v for_o to_o morrow_n when_o to_o morrow_n be_v come_v they_o be_v as_o weary_a of_o it_o and_o devise_v this_o and_o that_o not_o to_o make_v use_n and_o benefit_n of_o the_o day_n but_o to_o spend_v it_o and_o pass_v it_o away_o with_o idleness_n and_o they_o think_v that_o day_n be_v best_a spend_v that_o be_v most_o light_o and_o merry_o fly_v over_o their_o head_n 2._o this_o shall_v teach_v god_n child_n to_o repent_v they_o unfeigned_o of_o so_o many_o day_n as_o have_v pass_v over_o their_o head_n without_o profit_n and_o it_o shall_v teach_v they_o to_o make_v more_o use_n of_o the_o time_n to_o come_v even_o to_o resolve_v with_o themselves_o that_o no_o day_n to_o come_v shall_v pass_v away_o vain_o and_o idle_o but_o that_o they_o will_v make_v some_o special_a use_n and_o reckon_n of_o it_o and_o therefore_o this_o day_n to_o think_v what_o good_a use_n they_o shall_v put_v the_o morrow_n to_o if_o god_n spare_v they_o life_n and_o so_o one_o day_n after_o another_o but_o the_o heathen_a the_o special_a mean_n to_o move_v god_n to_o teach_v we_o to_o make_v reckon_v and_o account_n of_o our_o day_n as_o matter_n of_o worth_n be_v prayer_n this_o the_o prophet_n teach_v in_o his_o own_o example_n and_o speak_v in_o the_o person_n of_o all_o god_n people_n so_o that_o those_o that_o have_v a_o heart_n to_o call_v upon_o god_n herein_o shall_v be_v sure_a to_o find_v god_n ready_a herein_o to_o assist_v they_o if_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n to_o this_o purpose_n have_v make_v a_o prayer_n in_o the_o name_n of_o moses_n and_o the_o whole_a church_n sure_o if_o moses_n or_o any_o servant_n of_o god_n shall_v with_o a_o good_a heart_n make_v that_o prayer_n they_o shall_v be_v sure_a therein_o to_o obtain_v their_o desire_n the_o four_o lesson_n that_o to_o stir_v up_o our_o prayer_n to_o god_n herein_o we_o must_v be_v deep_o possess_v and_o affect_v with_o the_o sense_n of_o our_o mortality_n and_o sure_o if_o we_o do_v serious_o consider_v that_o which_o
