work_n of_o faith_n in_o their_o youth_n to_o live_v stupid_a in_o their_o old_a age_n and_o die_v senseless_a 4._o consider_v what_o sort_n of_o folk_n they_o be_v of_o who_o the_o scripture_n speak_v as_o unbeliever_n and_o who_o the_o word_n of_o god_n hold_v forth_o to_o be_v eternal_o seclude_v from_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n for_o the_o want_n of_o faith_n many_o think_v that_o it_o be_v but_o the_o gross_o profane_a or_o such_o as_o never_o have_v so_o much_o as_o the_o form_n of_o religion_n and_o such_o as_o other_o will_v scunner_n and_o loath_a to_o hear_v they_o but_o mention_v that_o its_o i_o say_v only_o such_o that_o be_v account_v unbeliever_n but_o the_o scripture_n speak_v of_o some_o that_o seek_v to_o enter_v in_o and_o shall_v not_o be_v able_a that_o desire_n to_o be_v in_o heaven_n and_o take_v some_o pain_n to_o win_v in_o and_o yet_o be_v never_o admit_v to_o enter_v into_o it_o and_o what_o be_v the_o reason_n because_o they_o take_v not_o the_o way_n of_o believe_v for_o the_o obtain_n of_o life_n and_o come_n to_o heaven_n they_o take_v the_o way_n of_o work_n they_o take_v the_o way_n of_o prayer_n of_o purpose_n promise_n and_o resolution_n to_o ammend_v and_o grow_v better_o quite_o overlooking_a christ_n and_o the_o way_n of_o believe_v in_o he_o and_o so_o take_v the_o way_n of_o presumption_n and_o promise_v themselves_o peace_n when_o there_o be_v no_o true_a peace_n nor_o any_o solid_a ground_n for_o it_o 5._o consider_v which_o be_v of_o affinity_n with_o the_o former_a consideration_n they_o that_o be_v seclude_v from_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n for_o the_o want_n of_o faith_n they_o be_v even_o man_n and_o woman_n as_o we_o be_v that_o live_v in_o the_o same_o kingdom_n and_o city_n with_o we_o that_o pray_v in_o the_o same_o company_n with_o we_o that_o think_v themselves_o as_o sure_a of_o heaven_n as_o many_o of_o we_o do_v that_o be_v guilty_a of_o the_o same_o or_o like_a sin_n that_o we_o be_v guilty_a of_o that_o have_v hear_v many_o of_o the_o same_o preach_n that_o we_o have_v hear_v and_o yet_o they_o perish_v for_o want_v of_o faith_n for_o not_o believe_v in_o the_o son_n of_o god_n why_o then_o shall_v we_o think_v that_o impossible_a as_o to_o we_o that_o be_v so_o common_a and_o frequent_a in_o other_o be_v not_o the_o same_o nature_n in_o we_o that_o be_v in_o other_o and_o be_v not_o our_o heart_n natural_o as_o deceitful_a and_o corrupt_a as_o those_o of_o other_o and_o so_o may_v not_o we_o be_v beguile_v as_o well_o as_o other_o and_o be_v it_o not_o the_o same_o rule_n that_o he_o will_v walk_v by_o in_o judge_v of_o we_o that_o he_o walk_v by_o in_o judge_v of_o other_o what_o can_v be_v the_o reason_n that_o folk_n will_v read_v and_o hear_v the_o word_n and_o will_v promise_v to_o themselves_o heaven_n when_o the_o same_o word_n clear_v it_o plain_o that_o destruction_n be_v that_o which_o they_o have_v to_o look_v for_o from_o the_o lord_n it_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o this_o confident_a and_o proud_a presumption_n that_o many_o take_v for_o faith_n let_v not_o your_o precious_a opportunity_n slip_v away_o and_o beguile_v not_o creature_n in_o its_o be_v and_o continue_v it_o for_o ever_o under_o wrath_n because_o it_o can_v be_v finit_a satisfy_v infinite_a justice_n but_o our_o lord_n be_v god_n and_o man_n be_v of_o have_v the_o essential_o of_o that_o which_o sin_n deserve_v to_o wit_n death_n and_o the_o curse_n to_o meet_v with_o and_o do_v actual_o meet_v with_o they_o as_o the_o hide_v of_o his_o father_n face_n and_o the_o suspending_a and_o keep_v back_o of_o that_o consolation_n that_o by_o virtue_n of_o the_o personal_a union_n flow_v from_o the_o godhead_n to_o the_o man-head_n and_o he_o also_o meat_n and_o out_o of_o the_o strong_a come_v sweet_a this_o be_v the_o very_a marrow_n of_o the_o gospel_n hold_v out_o not_o only_a christ_n suffering_n but_o that_o he_o suffer_v not_o at_o random_n or_o by_o guess_n but_o that_o he_o suffer_v the_o sorrow_n and_o grief_n that_o we_o shall_v have_v suffer_v and_o though_o the_o equivalent_a may_v have_v be_v receive_v yet_o he_o will_v needs_o undergo_v the_o same_o suffering_n in_o their_o essential_o which_o may_v exceed_o confirm_v the_o faith_n and_o hope_n of_o believer_n in_o he_o of_o their_o exemption_n and_o freedom_n from_o the_o wrath_n and_o curse_n of_o god_n see_v he_o suffer_v the_o same_o that_o they_o shall_v have_v suffer_v have_v not_o he_o interpose_v betwixt_o they_o and_o it_o as_o their_o cautioner_n christ_n by_o faith_n he_o may_v plead_v for_o exemption_n from_o wrath_n by_o god_n determine_v and_o appoint_v a_o mediator_n for_o such_o a_o end_n and_o the_o mediator_n jesus_n christ_n have_v this_o privilege_n confer_v on_o he_o that_o he_o that_o thus_o flee_v unto_o he_o shall_v be_v safe_a yet_o it_o be_v also_o suppose_v that_o such_o a_o sinner_n have_v flee_v to_o he_o else_o he_o be_v sweet_o and_o powerful_o draw_v to_o rest_v on_o he_o and_o his_o satisfaction_n whereupon_o follow_v the_o application_n of_o the_o sentence_n of_o justification_n and_o absolution_n that_o result_v from_o the_o former_a so_o that_o whereas_o it_o be_v before_o curse_a be_v he_o that_o continue_v not_o in_o all_o thing_n write_v in_o the_o law_n now_o it_o be_v he_o that_o believe_v on_o together_o it_o will_v not_o be_v faith_n that_o will_v justify_v that_o be_v without_o respect_n to_o the_o covenant_n neither_o will_v the_o covenant_n and_o christ_n satisfaction_n justify_v without_o faith_n yet_o you_o will_v so_o put_v they_o together_o as_o the_o glory_n of_o salvation_n through_o grace_n may_v not_o lie_v on_o faith_n but_o on_o god_n everlasting_a love_n and_o on_o christ_n satisfaction_n and_o indeed_o it_o be_v no_o little_a practic_n for_o a_o soul_n sensible_a of_o sin_n in_o the_o exercise_n of_o faith_n so_o to_o lay_v the_o weight_n of_o its_o salvation_n on_o christ_n and_o the_o covenant_n as_o it_o neglect_v not_o run_v to_o christ_n by_o faitâ—_n and_o so_o to_o lay_v hold_n on_o christ_n by_o faith_n as_o it_o lay_v not_o the_o weight_n on_o faith_n but_o on_o christ_n and_o the_o covenant_n as_o in_o the_o comparison_n before_o use_v suppose_v a_o man_n that_o have_v kill_v another_o unaware_o have_v be_v take_v before_o he_o win_v to_o the_o city_n of_o refuge_n god_n determination_n be_v not_o the_o cause_n of_o that_o but_o his_o not_o run_v or_o his_o not_o come_v at_o the_o city_n so_o it_o may_v be_v that_o some_o be_v apprehend_v by_o the_o justice_n of_o god_n that_o be_v less_o sinful_a than_o other_o yet_o the_o reason_n or_o câ—uâ—e_n be_v not_o in_o god_n covenant_n nor_o in_o câ—rists_n want_n of_o worth_n but_o in_o the_o person_n not_o run_v or_o not_o flee_v to_o christ_n as_o to_o the_o city_n of_o refuge_n and_o therefore_o they_o be_v not_o hear_v to_o plead_v for_o immunity_n by_o virtue_n of_o that_o satisfaction_n before_o the_o bar_n of_o god_n a_o second_o sort_n of_o uses_n be_v for_o exhort_v and_o encourage_v sinner_n to_o come_v to_o christ_n there_o be_v here_o then_o 1._o a_o clear_a ground_n to_o our_o our_o faith_n and_o a_o plain_a way_n open_v to_o heaven_n and_o a_o mighty_a encouragement_n to_o persuade_v sinner_n to_o lay_v hold_n on_o christ_n and_o to_o take_v this_o way_n for_o obtain_v of_o life_n this_o text_n open_v as_o it_o be_v the_o gate_n of_o the_o city_n of_o refuge_n and_o point_n out_o the_o way_n how_o to_o eshew_v the_o wrath_n which_o be_v to_o come_v there_o be_v a_o way_n here_o lay_v down_o in_o the_o wisdom_n justice_n go_v dness_n and_o grace_n of_o god_n which_o be_v make_v offer_n of_o in_o the_o gospel_n and_o since_o it_o be_v so_o we_o beseech_v you_o that_o you_o will_v not_o receive_v this_o grace_n in_o vain_a but_o see_v there_o be_v a_o covenant_n well_o order_v and_o sure_a a_o mediator_n and_o a_o ransom_n provide_v to_o make_v use_n of_o this_o ground_n 3._o the_o great_a encouragement_n we_o have_v so_o to_o do_v and_o 4_o the_o great_a necessity_n we_o have_v to_o make_v this_o application_n a_o little_a to_o each_o of_o these_o but_o we_o shall_v premit_fw-la one_o word_n to_o all_o and_o it_o be_v this_o that_o consider_v you_o be_v all_o in_o tryft_a term_n with_o god_n whether_o you_o live_v at_o a_o distance_n from_o he_o the_o uâ—e_v will_n by_o way_n of_o exhortation_n reach_v you_o or_o whether_o you_o be_v bring_v to_o great_a nearness_n under_o the_o sense_n of_o sin_n and_o have_v some_o seriousness_n in_o seek_v after_o god_n it_o will_v reach_v you_o for_o consolation_n in_o a_o word_n we_o will_v exhort_v all_o and_o it_o may_v convince_v some_o &_o comfort_v other_o but_o to_o the_o first_o thing_n we_o propose_v we_o declare_v and_o proclaim_v this_o as_o a_o true_a and_o faithful_a say_n that_o there_o be_v here_o a_o everlasting_a covenant_n wherein_o the_o salvation_n of_o the_o elect_n be_v conclude_v through_o christ_n satisfaction_n to_o justice_n for_o they_o and_o a_o way_n lay_v down_o for_o make_v peace_n betwixt_o god_n and_o all_o they_o that_o will_v thorough_o renounce_v their_o own_o righteousness_n and_o lay_v hold_v
the_o elect_a as_o their_o surety_n and_o god_n justice_n pursue_v and_o hold_v he_o in_o on_o the_o other_o side_n so_o that_o he_o can_v decline_v be_v sist_v at_o the_o bar_n of_o justice_n
