we_o must_v not_o worship_n god_n according_a to_o our_o own_o will_n and_o therefore_o what_o ever_o we_o do_v in_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n if_o we_o have_v not_o a_o warrant_n for_o it_o when_o this_o be_v say_v who_o require_v this_o at_o your_o hand_n it_o will_v stop_v our_o mouth_n another_o day_n in_o matthew_n 15._o 9_o in_o vain_a do_v they_o worship_v i_o teach_v for_o doctrine_n the_o commandment_n of_o man_n in_o vain_a it_o be_v a_o vain_a thing_n to_o worship_n god_n when_o there_o be_v nothing_o but_o a_o commandment_n of_o man_n for_o this_o worship_n if_o you_o will_v there_o must_v be_v nothing_o but_o what_o god_n command_v the_o second_o note_n be_v in_o the_o matter_n of_o worship_n god_n stand_v upon_o little_a thing_n such_o thing_n as_o seem_v to_o be_v very_o small_a and_o little_a to_o we_o yet_o god_n stand_v much_o upon_o they_o in_o the_o matter_n of_o worship_n for_o there_o be_v nothing_o wherein_o the_o prerogative_n of_o god_n do_v more_o be_v most_o potent_a with_o god_n as_o now_o a_o stranger_n can_v prevail_v in_o any_o petition_n so_o as_o a_o familiar_a friend_n can_v thus_o my_o brethren_n when_o stranger_n come_v into_o god_n and_o the_o preparation_n of_o ourselves_o for_o worship_n be_v all_o one_o i_o will_v give_v you_o these_o two_o text_n in_o 1_o sam._n 16._o 5._o you_o shall_v find_v there_o that_o samuel_n when_o sacrifice_n do_v you_o come_v peaceable_o say_v they_o yes_o what_o then_o sanctify_v yourselves_o and_o come_v with_o i_o to_o the_o sacrifice_n that_o be_v all_o one_o as_o if_o he_o shall_v have_v say_v prepare_v yourselves_o and_o come_v with_o i_o to_o the_o sacrifice_n and_o so_o in_o job_n 1._o 5._o there_o you_o shall_v find_v that_o the_o holy_a man_n job_n when_o his_o son_n have_v be_v feast_v he_o be_v somewhat_o afraid_a lest_o there_o shall_v be_v some_o miscarriage_n and_o that_o they_o have_v sin_v against_o god_n in_o their_o feast_n as_o it_o be_v very_o hard_a to_o give_v be_v say_v he_o send_v to_o his_o son_n and_o sanctify_a they_o it_o be_v so_o say_v the_o text_n when_o the_o day_n of_o the_o feast_n be_v go_v about_o that_o job_n send_v and_o sanctify_v they_o that_o job_n send_v unto_o they_o to_o prepare_v they_o to_o offer_v sacrifice_n to_o prepare_v they_o for_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n so_o that_o the_o scripture_n hold_v forth_o this_o then_o that_o to_o prepare_v for_o worship_n it_o be_v to_o sanctify_v for_o worship_n and_o so_o it_o be_v one_o special_a thing_n that_o be_v require_v in_o our_o sanctify_v of_o god_n in_o our_o draw_v nigh_o to_o god_n to_o make_v a_o due_a preparation_n for_o his_o holy_a worship_n now_o for_o the_o orderly_a handle_n of_o thing_n first_o i_o shall_v show_v you_o that_o we_o must_v prepare_v for_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n second_o i_o shall_v show_v you_o wherein_o this_o preparation_n for_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n do_v consist_v three_o the_o excellency_n that_o there_o be_v in_o this_o or_o what_o great_a good_a there_o be_v in_o preparation_n for_o god_n worship_n four_o i_o shall_v answer_v a_o case_n of_o conscience_n or_o two_o five_o i_o will_v show_v you_o what_o be_v the_o behaviour_n of_o the_o soul_n in_o sanctify_a god_n name_v six_o the_o reason_n why_o god_n will_v be_v sanctify_v in_o the_o duty_n of_o his_o worship_n first_o that_o there_o must_v be_v preparation_n to_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n for_o first_o that_o god_n that_o we_o come_v to_o worship_n be_v a_o great_a and_o glorious_a god_n and_o we_o have_v to_o deal_v with_o such_o a_o infinite_a glorious_a dreadful_a majesty_n it_o be_v fit_a that_o we_o shall_v make_v preparation_n when_o we_o come_v nigh_o unto_o he_o therefore_o in_o exod._n 19_o 10._o when_o god_n come_v among_o the_o people_n to_o give_v they_o his_o law_n he_o do_v require_v that_o they_o shall_v be_v sanctify_v to_o day_n and_o to_o morrow_n and_o that_o they_o shall_v wash_v their_o clothes_n and_o be_v ready_a against_o the_o three_o day_n for_o the_o three_o day_n the_o lord_n will_v come_v down_o upon_o mount_n sinai_n in_o the_o sight_n of_o the_o people_n god_n do_v not_o so_o much_o stand_v upon_o their_o clothes_n but_o it_o be_v to_o signify_v a_o inward_a wash_n now_o my_o brother_n if_o when_o god_n come_v to_o give_v the_o law_n they_o be_v so_o to_o prepare_v then_o the_o six_o and_o last_o reason_n have_v a_o great_a deal_n in_o it_o which_o i_o beseech_v you_o consider_v of_o we_o find_v that_o the_o scripture_n do_v make_v the_o uprightness_n of_o the_o heart_n much_o to_o consist_v in_o preparation_n for_o worship_n and_o do_v make_v the_o falseness_n of_o the_o heart_n to_o consist_v in_o this_o that_o man_n do_v not_o prepare_v perhaps_o you_o have_v not_o so_o much_o think_v of_o this_o but_o yet_o it_o be_v of_o excellent_a use_n unto_o you_o we_o shall_v find_v the_o scripture_n do_v make_v the_o very_a uprightness_n of_o the_o heart_n to_o consist_v in_o the_o preparation_n for_o duty_n and_o the_o falseness_n of_o a_o man_n heart_n to_o consist_v in_o this_o that_o he_o make_v not_o conscience_n to_o prepare_v his_o heart_n for_o god_n and_o his_o worship_n and_o this_o i_o will_v show_v unto_o you_o very_o plain_o and_o clear_o take_v these_o two_o example_n the_o first_o of_o rehoboam_n and_o the_o second_o of_o jehoshaphat_n one_o a_o wicked_a man_n who_o heart_n be_v false_a and_o the_o other_o a_o godly_a man_n who_o heart_n be_v right_a with_o god_n the_o falseness_n of_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o one_o be_v in_o 2_o chron._n 12._o 14._o there_o you_o have_v what_o god_n thought_n of_o rehoboam_n be_v in_o the_o verse_n before_o but_o now_o he_o bring_v the_o reason_n of_o his_o sentence_n upon_o he_o and_o say_v the_o text_n he_o do_v evil_a because_o he_o prepare_v not_o his_o heart_n to_o seek_v the_o lord_n there_o be_v many_o good_a thing_n that_o rehoboam_n do_v i_o may_v show_v you_o some_o thing_n as_o how_o he_o do_v obey_v the_o prophet_n of_o god_n when_o he_o be_v seek_v to_o avenge_v himself_o upon_o those_o that_o do_v rend_v themselves_o from_o his_o obedience_n the_o lord_n do_v but_o send_v his_o prophet_n and_o though_o he_o have_v a_o army_n ready_a to_o revenge_v himself_o upon_o those_o that_o in_o a_o way_n of_o rebellion_n do_v rend_v themselves_o from_o under_o his_o government_n and_o he_o obey_v the_o word_n of_o the_o lord_n but_o for_o all_o that_o he_o do_v evil_a in_o the_o sight_n of_o the_o lord_n god_n look_v upon_o he_o as_o a_o man_n that_o have_v no_o uprightness_n in_o he_o why_o for_o he_o do_v not_o prepare_v his_o heart_n to_o seek_v the_o lord_n say_v god_n i_o look_v upon_o all_o rehoboam_n do_v as_o nothing_o look_v upon_o his_o way_n as_o evil_n and_o himself_o as_o a_o wicked_a man_n why_o because_o he_o do_v not_o prepare_v his_o heart_n to_o seek_v the_o lord_n if_o his_o heart_n have_v be_v upright_o with_o i_o he_o will_v have_v prepare_v his_o heart_n to_o seek_v i_o i_o beseech_v you_o now_o lie_v this_o text_n to_o your_o heart_n do_v you_o prepare_v your_o heart_n to_o seek_v god_n when_o you_o go_v to_o prayr_a can_v you_o say_v that_o you_o take_v pain_n in_o prepare_v your_o heart_n for_o it_o and_o in_o hear_v the_o word_n and_o so_o likewise_o for_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n now_o for_o jehoshaphat_n a_o godly_a man_n in_o 2_o chron._n 19_o 3._o there_o you_o may_v see_v what_o the_o lord_n say_v of_o jehoshaphat_n that_o be_v godly_a nevertheless_o there_o be_v good_a thing_n find_v in_o thou_o in_o that_o thou_o have_v take_v way_n the_o grove_n out_o of_o the_o land_n and_o have_v prepare_v thy_o heart_n to_o seek_v god_n jehoshaphat_n be_v find_v guilty_a in_o join_v himself_o to_o wicked_a man_n too_o much_o the_o prophet_n come_v and_o say_v to_o he_o will_v thou_o help_v the_o ungodly_a and_o love_v they_o that_o hate_v the_o lord_n therefore_o be_v wrath_n upon_o thou_o from_o before_o the_o lord_n jehoshaphat_n here_o we_o see_v be_v very_o faulty_a in_o join_v with_o those_o that_o be_v wicked_a and_o be_v rebuke_v by_o the_o prophet_n from_o the_o lord_n what_o will_v thou_o join_v with_o the_o wicked_a the_o wrath_n of_o god_n be_v upon_o thou_o well_o but_o for_o all_o that_o i_o beseech_v you_o observe_v it_o that_o at_o that_o time_n when_o the_o lord_n be_v most_o displease_v against_o jehoshaphat_n and_o send_v his_o prophet_n in_o his_o name_n to_o pronounce_v this_o that_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n be_v out_o against_o he_o yet_o for_o all_o this_o god_n can_v but_o take_v notice_n of_o this_o that_o he_o have_v a_o upright_a heart_n though_o he_o fail_v in_o that_o particular_a yet_o there_o be_v some_o good_a find_v in_o thou_o in_o that_o thou_o have_v prepare_v thy_o heart_n to_o seek_v god_n indeed_o through_o some_o sudden_a temptation_n thou_o be_v draw_v aside_o in_o this_o particular_a act_n yea_o but_o it_o have_v be_v thy_o care_n to_o prepare_v thy_o heart_n to_o seek_v i_o and_o in_o that_o regard_n i_o do_v look_v upon_o thou_o as_o have_v a_o upright_a heart_n and_o thus_o you_o see_v how_o much_o the_o scripture_n put_v upon_o the_o preparation_n of_o the_o heart_n to_o seek_v god_n and_o so_o in_o 1_o sam._n 7._o 3._o you_o shall_v find_v that_o the_o scripture_n make_v the_o uprightness_n of_o the_o heart_n to_o consist_v in_o this_o and_o samuel_n speak_v unto_o all_o the_o house_n of_o israel_n say_v if_o you_o do_v return_n unto_o the_o lord_n with_o all_o your_o heart_n what_o then_o then_o put_v away_o the_o strange_a god_n and_o ashtaroth_n from_o among_o you_o and_o prepare_v your_o heart_n unto_o the_o lord_n and_o serve_v he_o only_o as_o if_o samuel_n shall_v say_v if_o to_o make_v conscience_n to_o prepare_v your_o heart_n for_o holy_a duty_n know_v that_o you_o have_v not_o turn_v with_o all_o your_o heart_n unto_o the_o lord_n there_o have_v not_o be_v the_o true_a turn_n of_o your_o heart_n unto_o the_o lord_n thus_o you_o see_v there_o be_v much_o lie_v upon_o preparation_n to_o the_o duty_n of_o god_n worship_n well_o you_o will_v say_v see_v there_o lie_v so_o much_o in_o it_o i_o pray_v open_v it_o wherein_o it_o do_v consist_v to_o that_o i_o answer_v it_o consist_v in_o these_o five_o thing_n which_o i_o shall_v brief_o name_v first_o in_o the_o possess_n the_o heart_n with_o the_o right_a apprehension_n of_o that_o god_n before_o who_o we_o come_v to_o tender_v our_o duty_n then_o do_v we_o make_v conscience_n to_o prepare_v our_o heart_n when_o we_o labour_v upon_o our_o go_v to_o worship_n god_n to_o get_v our_o heart_n beforehand_o possess_v with_o right_a apprehension_n of_o the_o majesty_n of_o that_o god_n that_o we_o be_v go_v to_o worship_n and_o of_o the_o greatness_n and_o weight_n of_o the_o duty_n that_o we_o be_v set_v about_o the_o nature_n of_o it_o the_o manner_n how_o it_o be_v to_o be_v perform_v the_o rule_n by_o which_o we_o be_v to_o be_v guide_v the_o end_n that_o we_o be_v to_o aim_v at_o meditation_n be_v a_o good_a preparation_n to_o holy_a duty_n and_o these_o be_v the_o general_a head_n of_o our_o meditation_n for_o our_o preparation_n to_o duty_n viz._n 1._o what_o god_n he_o be_v we_o have_v to_o deal_v with_o meditate_v of_o god_n in_o his_o attribute_n and_o then_o meditate_v of_o the_o weight_n of_o our_o duty_n and_o the_o nature_n of_o they_o and_o the_o rule_n of_o they_o and_o the_o end_n of_o they_o get_v your_o heart_n possess_v with_o meditation_n of_o this_o nature_n and_o in_o this_o at_o a_o special_a thing_n do_v consist_v your_o preparation_n to_o holy_a duty_n 2._o the_o second_o thing_n wherein_o the_o preparation_n to_o a_o duty_n consist_v it_o be_v this_o the_o take_v off_o of_o the_o heart_n from_o every_o sinful_a way_n the_o endeavour_n at_o least_o if_o there_o be_v iniquity_n in_o thy_o hand_n or_o heart_n labour_v to_o put_v it_o out_o when_o thou_o be_v to_o come_v into_o godâ—_n presence_n do_v not_o bring_v into_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n the_o love_n of_o any_o sin_n in_o thy_o heart_n but_o labour_n to_o put_v it_o from_o thy_o heart_n in_o 2_o chron._n 29._o 5._o we_o find_v there_o what_o be_v require_v to_o preparation_n the_o text_n say_v hezekiah_n say_v unto_o they_o hear_v i_o you_o levite_n sanctify_v now_o yourselves_o and_o sanctify_v the_o house_n of_o the_o lord_n god_n of_o your_o father_n and_o carry_v forth_o the_o filthiness_n out_o of_o the_o holy_a place_n that_o be_v sanctify_v a_o thing_n to_o carry_v forth_o the_o filthiness_n out_o of_o that_o thing_n that_o we_o will_v sanctify_v so_o the_o sanctify_a of_o our_o heart_n it_o be_v by_o
the_o heart_n prepare_v in_o thing_n that_o be_v good_a vers_fw-la 13._o if_o thou_o prepare_v thy_o heart_n etc._n etc._n and_o then_o vers_n 15._o then_o shall_v thou_o lift_v up_o thy_o face_n without_o spot_n yea_o thou_o shall_v be_v steadfast_a and_o shall_v not_o fear_v when_o the_o heart_n be_v prepare_v for_o that_o that_o be_v good_a when_o it_o come_v into_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n it_o be_v able_a to_o lift_v up_o itself_o without_o fear_n in_o a_o steadfast_a comfortable_a way_n and_o this_o will_v quit_v the_o cost_n of_o any_o labour_n second_o if_o the_o heart_n be_v prepare_v it_o will_v do_v a_o great_a deal_n in_o a_o little_a time_n in_o a_o chron._n 29._o 36._o it_o be_v say_v that_o hezekiah_n rejoice_v and_o all_o the_o poeple_n that_o god_n have_v prepare_v the_o people_n for_o the_o thing_n be_v do_v sudden_o the_o thing_n come_v off_o free_o and_o sudden_o when_o as_o that_o they_o be_v prepare_v hezekiah_n rejoice_v and_o bless_a god_n for_o such_o a_o mercy_n as_o this_o be_v it_o be_v a_o great_a mercy_n to_o have_v the_o heart_n of_o people_n prepare_v unto_o a_o good_a work_n and_o so_o in_o 2_o chron._n 27._o 6._o the_o text_n say_v jotham_n become_v mighty_a because_o he_o prepare_v his_o way_n before_o the_o lord_n his_o god_n jotham_n he_o grow_v mighty_a by_o this_o and_o so_o certain_o the_o way_n to_o grow_v to_o be_v very_o strong_a &_o mighty_a to_o be_v able_a to_o do_v a_o great_a deal_n in_o a_o little_a time_n it_o be_v to_o make_v preration_n there_o may_v be_v as_o much_o work_n do_v in_o one_o hour_n so_o as_o in_o ten_o time_n so_o much_o time_n when_o the_o heart_n be_v not_o prepare_v for_o it_o in_o ezra_n 7._o 10._o you_o shall_v find_v that_o the_o reason_n be_v give_v why_o ezra_n have_v such_o good_a success_n in_o his_o journey_n it_o be_v because_o he_o have_v prepare_v his_o heart_n make_v preparation_n for_o holy_a duty_n and_o you_o shall_v have_v success_n in_o holy_a duty_n there_o be_v a_o notable_a scripture_n for_o that_o in_o psal_n 10._o 17._o where_o the_o holy_a ghost_n say_v that_o god_n prepare_v the_o heart_n and_o what_o then_o when_o god_n do_v prepare_v the_o heart_n he_o do_v then_o cause_v his_o ear_n to_o hear_v there_o be_v never_o a_o prayer_n make_v wherein_o the_o heart_n be_v prepare_v for_o it_o but_o that_o prayer_n be_v hear_v they_o go_v both_o together_o lord_n thou_o will_v prepare_v their_o heart_n and_o thou_o will_v cause_v thy_o ear_n to_o hear_v if_o god_n have_v once_o prepare_v thy_o heart_n thou_o will_v be_v sure_a to_o be_v hear_v then_o be_v it_o not_o worth_a a_o world_n for_o to_o know_v one_o self_n to_o be_v accept_v of_o god_n in_o every_o duty_n of_o worship_n that_o we_o tender_v up_o to_o he_o this_o one_o scripture_n psal_n 10._o 17._o will_v show_v it_o oh_o the_o excellency_n that_o there_o be_v in_o preparation_n to_o duty_n there_o be_v one_o thing_n more_o that_o be_v very_o observable_a and_o that_o be_v this_o where_o the_o heart_n be_v prepare_v to_o duty_n there_o the_o lord_n will_v pass_v by_o weakness_n and_o imperfection_n in_o duty_n when_o thou_o come_v to_o perform_v holy_a duty_n thou_o be_v trouble_v will_v the_o lord_n have_v regard_n to_o such_o a_o duty_n as_o this_o be_v thou_o may_v have_v certain_a assurance_n that_o the_o lord_n will_v have_v regard_n if_o thou_o can_v make_v this_o point_n good_a to_o thou_o own_o soul_n that_o it_o be_v thy_o care_n to_o make_v preparation_n for_o this_o duty_n can_v thou_o say_v lord_n i_o have_v endeavour_v and_o do_v what_o i_o can_v to_o fit_v my_o heart_n for_o duty_n but_o o_o lord_n i_o find_v when_o i_o be_o at_o it_o wonderful_a distraction_n much_o deadness_n and_o vanity_n what_o shall_v i_o do_v why_o can_v thou_o make_v good_a the_o former_a and_o appeal_v to_o god_n that_o indeed_o it_o be_v thy_o care_n to_o make_v preparation_n i_o will_v give_v thou_o one_o scripture_n then_o for_o the_o quiet_v of_o thy_o heart_n in_o this_o that_o the_o weakness_n of_o the_o duty_n shall_v be_v pardon_v and_o pass_v by_o where_o there_o be_v care_n to_o prepare_v beforehand_o the_o scripture_n be_v in_o 2_o chron._n 33._o 18_o 19_o but_o hezekiah_n pray_v for_o they_o say_v the_o good_a lord_n pardon_v every_o one_o what_o every_o one_o every_o one_o that_o prepare_v his_o heart_n to_o seek_v the_o lord_n god_n of_o his_o father_n though_o he_o be_v not_o cleanse_v according_a to_o the_o purification_n of_o the_o sanctuary_n as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v oh_o lord_n there_o be_v many_o and_o the_o lord_n hearken_v to_o hezekiah_n and_o heal_v the_o people_n nay_o say_v god_n i_o will_v not_o stand_v so_o much_o upon_o the_o purification_n of_o the_o sanctuary_n if_o they_o have_v prepare_v their_o heart_n to_o seek_v i_o take_v this_o scripture_n know_v it_o be_v write_v for_o thy_o instruction_n and_o thou_o may_v make_v use_n of_o it_o to_o thy_o own_o soul_n this_o day_n if_o thou_o can_v appeal_v to_o god_n that_o thou_o be_v careful_a to_o prepare_v thy_o heart_n though_o thou_o shall_v not_o have_v that_o pureness_n of_o thy_o heart_n as_o thou_o do_v desire_v the_o lord_n will_v pardon_v thou_o and_o heal_v thou_o make_v conscience_n of_o preparation_n to_o holy_a duty_n again_o further_o by_o be_v careful_a to_o make_v preparation_n for_o duty_n within_o some_o little_a time_n thou_o will_v bring_v the_o heart_n to_o such_o a_o frame_n as_o it_o will_v always_o be_v ready_a for_o duty_n without_o much_o ado_n indeed_o at_o first_o it_o be_v somewhat_o hard_a you_o will_v say_v be_v we_o bind_v to_o spend_v some_o time_n every_o time_n we_o go_v to_o prayer_n beforehand_o or_o every_o time_n we_o come_v to_o the_o word_n that_o shall_v have_v be_v one_o of_o the_o case_n of_o conscience_n but_o i_o can_v come_v to_o answer_v that_o but_o this_o we_o may_v say_v be_v careful_a to_o prepare_v for_o duty_n you_o that_o be_v young_a beginner_n or_o you_o that_o have_v make_v profession_n a_o long_a time_n but_o yet_o have_v not_o have_v the_o weight_n of_o this_o duty_n upon_o your_o spirit_n now_o be_v careful_a for_o a_o while_n to_o prepare_v for_o every_o duty_n of_o god_n worship_n that_o god_n call_v you_o to_o and_o i_o say_v within_o a_o little_a time_n thou_o may_v bring_v thy_o heart_n into_o such_o a_o temper_n as_o thou_o may_v be_v ready_a at_o all_o time_n to_o perform_v holy_a duty_n because_o you_o shall_v be_v able_a to_o come_v to_o that_o temper_n and_o frame_v that_o the_o apostle_n exhort_v to_o pray_v continual_o for_o indeed_o so_o it_o shall_v be_v with_o we_o we_o shall_v be_v always_o prepare_v either_o for_o prayer_n hear_v the_o word_n or_o receive_v sacrament_n now_o because_o sacrament_n be_v so_o rare_a those_o that_o have_v any_o enlighten_v conscience_n they_o think_v they_o dare_v not_o but_o prepare_v for_o sacrament_n but_o you_o shall_v be_v always_o in_o a_o preparation_n for_o the_o to_o sanctify_v god_n name_n in_o prayer_n that_o be_v a_o excellent_a temper_n indeed_o if_o you_o can_v find_v it_o so_o that_o you_o walk_v so_o spiritual_o and_o holy_o before_o god_n as_o there_o
