what_o he_o be_v and_o how_o that_o he_o be_v able_a to_o perform_v his_o mercy_n he_o say_v plain_o whatsoever_o sin_n the_o devil_n the_o world_n the_o flesh_n hell_n heaven_n or_o the_o earth_n bitter_a accusation_n of_o god_n law_n that_o true_o accuse_v and_o painful_o grieve_v his_o conscience_n for_o sin_n of_o the_o other_o side_n in_o faith_n he_o consider_v how_o the_o scripture_n declare_v that_o god_n be_v merciful_a even_o unto_o the_o great_a sinner_n of_o the_o world_n and_o he_o learn_v also_o by_o the_o word_n of_o god_n that_o god_n have_v make_v promise_n unto_o thus_o weigh_v the_o strength_n of_o the_o devil_n and_o sin_n in_o the_o one_o part_n to_o damn_v and_o the_o strength_n of_o god_n mercy_n in_o christ_n jesus_n on_o the_o other_o part_n to_o save_v consolation_n and_o perceive_v the_o riches_n abundance_n and_o strength_n of_o god_n mercy_n to_o be_v more_o avaylable_a to_o save_v than_o all_o the_o power_n and_o strength_n of_o the_o devil_n and_o sin_n to_o damn_v for_o the_o great_a victory_n that_o god_n take_v over_o such_o strong_a enemy_n the_o prophet_n triumph_v in_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n joyful_o and_o thankful_o extol_v he_o for_o his_o mercy_n and_o power_n that_o have_v break_v the_o serpent_n head_n and_o spoil_v he_o of_o his_o prisoner_n so_o we_o use_v to_o do_v when_o any_o man_n by_o valiantness_n defend_v we_o that_o how_o so_o ever_o the_o devil_n and_o wicked_a people_n take_v upon_o they_o to_o usurp_v by_o violence_n war_n and_o tyranny_n and_o live_v never_o so_o princely_a in_o pomp_n and_o pride_n in_o god_n say_v that_o in_o this_o glorious_a almighty_a and_o triumphant_a god_n be_v his_o glory_n and_o desire_v to_o have_v part_n of_o that_o victory_n and_o of_o that_o marvellous_a majesty_n and_o as_o the_o psalm_n say_v he_o call_v and_o name_v the_o god_n of_o glory_n his_o glory_n oh_o marvellous_a and_o unspeakable_a boldness_n and_o constancy_n of_o faith_n note_n a_o man_n the_o word_n we_o speak_v or_o pray_v may_v be_v unto_o we_o as_o much_o salvation_n comfort_n and_o glory_n as_o we_o perceive_v god_n have_v appoint_v in_o it_o for_o us._n and_o when_o we_o say_v with_o our_o mouth_n to_o god_n 17._o thou_o be_v my_o salvation_n my_o glory_n my_o rock_n and_o my_o trust_n let_v we_o cry_v lord_n increase_v our_o faith_n help_v we_o for_o thy_o name_n sake_n wrong_n and_o robbery_n give_v not_o yourselves_o to_o vanity_n if_o riches_n increase_v set_v not_o your_o heart_n upon_o they_o the_o five_o part_n show_v how_o man_n power_n be_v not_o to_o be_v trust_v unto_o the_o prophet_n by_o no_o mean_n will_v have_v man_n to_o put_v their_o trust_n in_o flesh_n and_o blood_n note_n in_o case_n they_o do_v they_o must_v needs_o perish_v for_o when_o trust_v in_o man_n for_o man_n of_o most_o excellency_n and_o great_a authority_n riches_n and_o power_n in_o the_o world_n be_v but_o vanity_n help_n as_o the_o prophet_n say_v now_o as_o they_o be_v so_o be_v their_o help_n and_o as_o their_o help_n be_v so_o be_v the_o comfort_n and_o consolation_n of_o such_o as_o seek_v help_n at_o their_o hand_n those_o that_o be_v trust_v unto_o be_v but_o flesh_n and_o blood_n diligent_o the_o best_a of_o flesh_n and_o blood_n be_v but_o vanity_n the_o consolation_n and_o help_n of_o vanity_n be_v misery_n and_o wretchedness_n wherefore_o the_o but_o also_o for_o their_o so_o do_v trust_v in_o flesh_n they_o be_v accurse_v of_o god_n as_o the_o scripture_n say_v curse_a be_v he_o that_o trust_v in_o man_n so_o that_o we_o see_v marvelous_a and_o unspeakable_a harm_n come_v of_o the_o trust_n in_o man_n first_o misery_n of_o y_fw-fr e_o world_n and_o next_o the_o enmity_n and_o curse_n of_o god_n for_o he_o that_o put_v his_o trust_n in_o man_n with_o the_o same_o one_o fact_n and_o do_v evil_n do_v two_o horrible_a evil_n the_o one_o he_o deceive_v himself_o for_o the_o vanity_n that_o he_o trust_v in_o can_v not_o save_v he_o and_o the_o other_o he_o dishonour_v god_n that_o only_o can_v save_v in_o put_v his_o trust_n in_o mortal_a man_n that_o can_v not_o save_v and_o so_o make_v of_o man_n god_n to_o god_n high_a displeasure_n and_o dishonour_n every_o christian_a man_n therefore_o shall_v forsake_v flesh_n and_o blood_n and_o trust_v in_o the_o lord_n almighty_a maker_n of_o heaven_n and_o earth_n as_o the_o prophet_n say_v their_o eye_n swell_v for_o fatness_n that_o be_v to_o wit_n their_o riches_n and_o honour_n puff_v they_o up_o in_o such_o pride_n that_o they_o contemn_v and_o despise_v all_o man_n sin_n and_o suffer_v their_o own_o cross_n and_o trouble_v they_o have_v much_o a_o do_v and_o with_o great_a difficulty_n do_v they_o believe_v that_o god_n will_v be_v as_o good_a unto_o they_o be_v private_a sinner_n and_o private_o afflict_v as_o he_o be_v unto_o the_o great_a number_n of_o those_o of_o who_o they_o read_v in_o the_o scripture_n that_o god_n forgive_v they_o their_o sin_n and_o preserve_v they_o in_o most_o horrible_a and_o dangerous_a trouble_n comfort_n therefore_o this_o be_v a_o common_a wisdom_n and_o daily_a experiment_a sentence_n omnes_fw-la cùm_fw-la valemus_fw-la bonum_fw-la consilium_fw-la aegrotis_fw-la damus_fw-la when_o other_o man_n be_v sick_a we_o can_v give_v good_a counsel_n patient_o to_o bear_v it_o when_o other_o man_n be_v afflict_v and_o trouble_v we_o can_v speak_v of_o many_o mean_n to_o quiet_v they_o when_o they_o be_v in_o any_o mistrust_n of_o god_n promise_n we_o can_v comfort_v they_o with_o many_o argument_n of_o faith_n but_o most_o common_o if_o we_o be_v sick_a ourselves_o trouble_v or_o in_o mistrust_n of_o god_n promise_n we_o can_v ease_v or_o comfort_v ourselves_o very_o little_a and_o good_a cause_n why_o for_o god_n that_o give_v of_o his_o own_o gist_n and_o only_o free_a liberality_n wisdom_n knowledge_n learning_n and_o consolation_n give_v also_o the_o grace_n that_o the_o say_a virtue_n may_v work_v their_o operation_n and_o expel_v the_o infirmity_n and_o disease_n wherefore_o these_o wisdom_n and_o virtue_n be_v ordain_v as_o it_o be_v marvellous_o note_v of_o saint_n paul_n 3._o i_o have_v plant_v &_o apollo_n have_v water_v but_o god_n give_v the_o increase_n the_o word_n of_o god_n be_v a_o mean_n to_o teach_v truth_n 1._o and_o to_o condemn_v falsehood_n to_o place_n virtue_n and_o to_o remove_v vice_n 28._o to_o give_v consolation_n and_o to_o banish_v and_o put_v away_o diffidence_n and_o mistrust_n but_o god_n give_v and_o work_v the_o effect_n thereof_o 16._o meat_n be_v make_v to_o preserve_v the_o body_n but_o if_o god_n give_v not_o strength_n it_o miss_v the_o purpose_n 21._o the_o horse_n and_o man_n be_v mean_n to_o overcome_v but_o in_o battle_n god_n give_v the_o victory_n the_o preacher_n preach_v god_n word_n but_o god_n open_v and_o teach_v the_o mystery_n thereof_o man_n hear_v but_o god_n give_v the_o understanding_n asaph_z remember_v god_n work_n and_o have_v in_o mind_n his_o own_o godly_a psalm_n but_o god_n must_v give_v the_o consolation_n he_o see_v the_o truth_n and_o know_v that_o god_n be_v faithful_a but_o the_o joy_n and_o profit_n thereof_o lay_v in_o the_o distribution_n and_o gift_n of_o god_n as_o we_o may_v well_o perceive_v by_o this_o sorrowful_a interrogatory_n will_v he_o be_v entreat_v no_o more_o of_o this_o part_n we_o learn_v how_o we_o ought_v pray_v when_o we_o read_v or_o hear_v god_n promise_n for_o our_o salvation_n to_o pray_v and_o how_o necessary_a a_o thing_n this_o prayer_n be_v that_o godly_a man_n make_v in_o the_o scripture_n lord_n help_v my_o incredulity_n lord_n increase_v our_o faith_n 9_o the_o poor_a man_n that_o hear_v and_o see_v christ_n mercy_n and_o liberality_n 17._o in_o heal_v of_o other_o desire_v also_o health_n for_o his_o own_o child_n christ_n say_v if_o he_o beléeve_v all_o thing_n be_v possible_a the_o poor_a man_n say_v i_o believe_v lord_n help_v my_o unbelief_n the_o apostle_n when_o they_o hear_v christ_n speak_v of_o forgiveness_n of_o one_o to_o the_o other_o they_o say_v increase_v our_o faith_n good_a lord_n as_o though_o they_o have_v say_v god_n the_o reader_n of_o god_n word_n the_o hearer_n of_o god_n word_n &_o the_o thinker_n upon_o the_o same_o many_o time_n before_o also_o while_o they_o be_v speak_v think_v read_v or_o hear_v of_o god_n word_n pray_v in_o their_o spirit_n that_z y_z e_z word_n of_o god_n may_v work_v in_o they_o the_o thing_n wherefore_o the_o word_n be_v institute_v and_o appoint_v of_o god_n 3._o or_o else_o we_o shall_v be_v as_o saint_n paul_n say_v always_o learner_n and_o yet_o never_o come_v to_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o truth_n and_o i_o do_v very_o think_v and_o be_o true_o persuade_v that_o for_o lack_v of_o earnest_n and_o continual_a prayer_n with_o lift_v up_o of_o my_o heart_n unto_o god_n while_o i_o preach_v his_o most_o holy_a word_n unto_o the_o people_n god_n judge_v i_o not_o worthy_a to_o see_v such_o fruit_n of_o my_o labour_n as_o i_o hope_v for_o and_o for_o this_o that_o the_o people_n do_v not_o hearty_o pray_v to_o understand_v god_n pleasure_n by_o his_o word_n preach_v they_o be_v account_v unworthy_a of_o such_o salvation_n as_o god_n do_v offer_v they_o by_o his_o word_n and_o the_o true_a preach_v of_o his_o mystery_n let_v all_o man_n therefore_o pray_v to_o god_n in_o christ_n that_o they_o may_v be_v the_o better_a for_o the_o hear_n record_v remember_v or_o read_v of_o god_n word_n for_o notwithstanding_o they_o have_v amongst_o they_o the_o book_n of_o god_n yet_o shall_v they_o be_v trouble_v without_o god_n singular_a grace_n with_o one_o of_o these_o two_o evil_n either_o to_o mock_v and_o scorn_n at_o the_o scripture_n care_v not_o whether_o they_o learn_v it_o or_o no_o or_o else_o when_o they_o have_v learn_v it_o to_o doubt_v whether_o it_o be_v true_a or_o no._n and_o then_o follow_v these_o question_n will_v god_n absent_v himself_o for_o ever_o and_o will_n god_n be_v no_o more_o entreat_v with_o such_o other_o doubt_n as_o do_v follow_v in_o this_o psalm_n with_o much_o heaviness_n unto_o the_o spirit_n where_o such_o demand_n rest_n &_o have_v place_n then_o follow_v the_o three_o demand_n by_o this_o trouble_a prophet_n be_v his_o mercy_n clean_o go_v for_o ever_o here_o in_o this_o demand_n first_o be_v two_o thing_n to_o be_v note_v the_o one_o declare_v a_o fault_n in_o the_o prophets_n faith_n and_o the_o other_o express_v a_o verity_n in_o the_o prophets_n knowledge_n the_o fault_n in_o his_o faith_n be_v to_o doubt_v or_o to_o stand_v in_o a_o mamere_n of_o god_n mercy_n which_o be_v most_o sure_a and_o endure_v for_o ever_o and_o ever_o and_o to_o ask_v this_o question_n whether_o his_o mercy_n be_v clean_o go_v for_o ever_o the_o verity_n of_o his_o knowledge_n be_v to_o judge_v and_o say_v that_o it_o be_v his_o mercy_n that_o forgive_v sin_n and_o not_o he_o or_o any_o other_o man_n merit_n that_o can_v deserve_v the_o pardon_v of_o sin_n as_o you_o may_v see_v how_o sinful_a saul_n for_o his_o sin_n 15._o think_v to_o have_v appease_v god_n with_o sacrifice_n 18._o and_o the_o proud_a pharisée_fw-fr with_o his_o pretence_a good_a work_n but_o here_o in_o this_o knowledge_n that_o the_o prophet_n complain_v of_o the_o departure_n of_o god_n mercy_n be_v set_v forth_o that_o only_a mercy_n appease_v god_n ire_n in_o christ_n for_o the_o sin_n of_o man_n 34._o and_o what_o work_v so_o ever_o be_v do_v except_o god_n mercy_n pardon_v the_o sin_n 7._o they_o all_o can_v neither_o please_v god_n 85._o nor_o quiet_a the_o conscience_n and_o trouble_a spirit_n of_o he_o that_o do_v the_o work_n 143._o as_o it_o may_v be_v see_v in_o the_o example_n of_o sainte_n peter_n and_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o apostle_n when_o that_o saint_n peter_n walk_v upon_o the_o sea_n come_v towards_o christ_n 14._o and_o feel_v the_o wind_n strong_a and_o
