most_o ambitious_a of_o honour_n and_o preferment_n and_o most_o covetous_a and_o the_o great_a enemy_n and_o persecutor_n of_o christ_n and_o of_o the_o sincere_a preacher_n and_o professor_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o christ_n call_v they_o serpent_n and_o a_o generation_n of_o viper_n the_o evangelist_n here_o mention_n these_o pharisee_n only_o as_o enemy_n to_o christ_n not_o that_o the_o scribe_n be_v his_o friend_n but_o because_o these_o be_v the_o most_o eminent_a and_o predominant_a sect_n and_o they_o who_o under_o a_o pretence_n of_o religious_a zeal_n be_v most_o carry_v against_o the_o way_n doctrine_n and_o religion_n of_o christ_n now_o christ_n know_v what_o a_o offence_n he_o be_v to_o they_o and_o what_o malice_n they_o have_v against_o he_o remove_v a_o circumstance_n but_o the_o church_n must_v take_v heed_n that_o under_o the_o name_n of_o circumstance_n and_o under_o pretence_n of_o church-power_n herein_o she_o do_v not_o bring_v in_o worship_n mere_a circumstance_n belong_v to_o religious_a action_n be_v leave_v to_o humane_a determination_n but_o it_o be_v not_o leave_v unto_o man_n to_o appoint_v any_o kind_n part_n or_o mean_n of_o worship_n now_o ceremony_n proper_o sacred_a and_o significant_a by_o humane_a institution_n be_v judge_v to_o be_v more_o than_o circumstance_n to_o be_v indeed_o part_n of_o worship_n to_o be_v ceremonial_a worship_n and_o that_o worship_n which_o be_v not_o command_v by_o god_n be_v not_o warrantable_a approve_a worship_n we_o have_v in_o the_o scripture_n strict_a prohibition_n of_o add_v to_o the_o word_n of_o god_n 4.2_o deut._n 4.2_o you_o shall_v not_o add_v to_o the_o word_n which_o i_o command_v you_o 12.32_o deut._n 12.32_o whatsoever_o thing_n i_o command_v you_o observe_v to_o his_o word_n 2._o god_n who_o be_v almighty_a and_o infinite_o wise_a and_o holy_a and_o just_a will_v take_v in_o hand_n such_o corrupter_n of_o his_o name_n and_o word_n so_o that_o he_o will_v demonstrate_v to_o they_o and_o convince_v they_o of_o their_o horrible_a wickedness_n in_o add_v to_o his_o word_n by_o foist_v in_o man_n invention_n and_o he_o will_v make_v they_o to_o bear_v their_o iniquity_n with_o terror_n and_o they_o shall_v be_v convince_v that_o they_o have_v lie_v against_o god_n and_o shall_v be_v make_v to_o bear_v the_o guilt_n of_o such_o lie_a and_o shall_v suffer_v the_o punishment_n shall_v receive_v the_o doom_n of_o liar_n these_o be_v weighty_a consideration_n to_o deter_v man_n from_o corrupt_v the_o word_n of_o god_n there_o be_v another_o terrible_a text_n to_o this_o purpose_n in_o the_o close_a of_o all_o the_o scripture_n 22.18_o rev._n 22.18_o if_o any_o man_n shall_v add_v unto_o these_o thing_n god_n shall_v add_v unto_o he_o the_o plague_n that_o be_v write_v in_o this_o book_n thus_o you_o see_v how_o the_o word_n of_o god_n witness_v against_o all_o devise_a will-worship_n which_o be_v not_o worship_n in_o truth_n now_o sure_o if_o man_n do_v look_v at_o god_n as_o god_n and_o look_v upon_o the_o scripture_n as_o his_o word_n own_v the_o sovereign_a authority_n of_o scripture_n they_o will_v then_o be_v fearful_a to_o corrupt_v the_o worship_n of_o god_n see_v god_n in_o his_o word_n do_v so_o strict_o prohibit_v and_o so_o earnest_o testify_v against_o such_o corruption_n but_o here_o be_v the_o mischief_n that_o however_o man_n may_v say_v that_o they_o believe_v the_o scripture_n to_o be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n yet_o they_o be_v indeed_o no_o better_o than_o infidel_n concern_v the_o scripture_n and_o the_o name_n of_o god_n in_o it_o 6.10_o jer._n 6.10_o the_o word_n of_o god_n be_v to_o they_o a_o reproach_n they_o have_v no_o delight_n in_o it_o man_n think_v that_o they_o have_v as_o good_a word_n as_o the_o word_n of_o god_n be_v and_o that_o they_o have_v tradition_n which_o be_v of_o as_o great_a authority_n as_o god_n revelation_n now_o when_o scripture_n be_v slight_v so_o that_o it_o lay_v no_o awe_n upon_o man_n spirit_n no_o marvel_n that_o man_n follow_v their_o own_o invention_n well_o beloved_n gospel-worship_n be_v a_o worship_n in_o truth_n regular_a worship_n which_o have_v its_o foundation_n in_o the_o word_n and_o be_v order_v according_a to_o the_o word_n of_o god_n we_o read_v in_o scripture_n of_o pure_a religion_n certain_o 1.21_o jam._n 1.21_o that_o religion_n be_v most_o pure_a which_o have_v its_o foundation_n and_o dependence_n upon_o the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o this_o religion_n stand_v for_o ever_o will_v stand_v in_o the_o judgement-day_n when_o all_o other_o religion_n will_v be_v condemn_v to_o hell_n the_o word_n of_o god_n endure_v for_o ever_o and_o so_o do_v they_o that_o conform_v themselves_o to_o it_o now_o for_o such_o as_o slight_v divine_a institution_n and_o cast_v off_o the_o only_a sure_a foundation_n they_o make_v other_o rule_n to_o themselves_o and_o ground_n their_o worship_n upon_o other_o rot_a foundation_n as_o 1._o the_o imagination_n of_o their_o own_o heart_n i_o think_v say_v one_o and_o another_o this_o be_v very_o good_a worship_n this_o be_v decent_a and_o this_o be_v good_a order_n but_o god_n often_o forbid_v the_o set_n up_o of_o such_o a_o rule_n tell_v we_o that_o we_o must_v not_o follow_v our_o own_o heart_n we_o must_v not_o go_v in_o the_o way_n
