ceremony_n by_o give_v general_a direction_n to_o superior_n in_o the_o impose_v of_o they_o and_o 2_o by_o command_v obedience_n to_o their_o imposition_n in_o all_o lawful_a matter_n the_o tenet_n of_o some_o nonconformist_n that_o no_o church-governor_n ought_v to_o ordain_v or_o introduce_v into_o the_o service_n of_o god_n any_o other_o rite_n or_o observation_n than_o such_o as_o god_n to_o david_n for_o the_o temple_n it_o be_v express_o say_v god_n give_v it_o he_o in_o write_v 28.19_o 1_o chron._n 28.19_o nothing_o then_o may_v be_v do_v by_o moses_n or_o by_o solomon_n though_o they_o be_v two_o of_o the_o wise_a man_n that_o ever_o live_v about_o the_o tabernacle_n or_o temple_n or_o about_o the_o whole_a service_n of_o god_n perform_v in_o they_o but_o according_a to_o they_o shall_v receive_v from_o the_o people_n so_o must_v we_o be_v tell_v also_o under_o the_o new_a testament_n under_o the_o law_n there_o be_v on_o earth_n a_o high_a priest_n over_o the_o jew_n therefore_o we_o must_v have_v a_o universal_a bishop_n over_o the_o christian_n moses_n
i_o shall_v first_o lay_v down_o plain_o the_o assertion_n or_o doctrine_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n in_o reference_n to_o the_o perfection_n of_o the_o holy_a scripture_n and_o from_o it_o give_v a_o direct_a answer_n to_o this_o objection_n 2_o i_o shall_v lay_v down_o the_o contrary_a tenet_n of_o some_o nonconformist_n which_o be_v here_o assert_v in_o this_o argugument_n 3_o i_o sacred_a and_o civil_a to_o appoint_v such_o rite_n and_o ceremony_n to_o be_v use_v in_o the_o service_n of_o god_n as_o they_o shall_v judge_v convenient_a and_o conduce_v to_o the_o end_n of_o unity_n and_o order_n peace_n and_o love_n decency_n uniformity_n and_o the_o edification_n of_o the_o church_n and_o that_o by_o virtue_n of_o these_o general_n rule_v follow_v after_o the_o thing_n 14.40_o rom._n 14.19_o phil._n 3.16_o 1_o cor._n 14.40_o which_o make_v for_o peace_n and_o whereby_o we_o may_v edify_v one_o another_o let_v we_o walk_v by_o the_o same_o rule_n let_v we_o mind_n the_o same_o thing_n let_v all_o thing_n be_v do_v decent_o and_o in_o order_n let_v all_o be_v do_v to_o edification_n and_o to_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n give_v no_o offence_n to_o jew_n or_o gentile_n or_o to_o the_o church_n of_o god_n etc._n etc._n they_o in_o the_o general_n be_v authorise_v to_o appoint_v such_o rite_n and_o ceremony_n as_o they_o judge_v most_o conduce_v to_o these_o end_n and_o that_o all_o christian_a people_n who_o live_v under_o their_o care_n and_o jurisdiction_n be_v bind_v to_o yield_v obedience_n to_o they_o in_o matter_n of_o this_o nature_n by_o virtue_n of_o these_o scripture_n they_o be_v bind_v to_o yield_v obedience_n to_o they_o in_o all_o lawful_a thing_n that_o be_v in_o all_o those_o thing_n which_o god_n have_v not_o forbid_v in_o his_o word_n for_o where_o there_o be_v no_o law_n of_o god_n forbid_v there_o can_v be_v no_o transgression_n and_o therefore_o to_o refuse_v obedience_n to_o our_o superior_n civil_a or_o sacred_a in_o worship_n be_v it_o time_n place_n gesture_n or_o the_o word_n in_o which_o it_o be_v to_o be_v perform_v leave_v indifferent_a or_o that_o be_v so_o that_o circumstance_n must_v not_o be_v use_v in_o god_n worship_n or_o else_o they_o must_v confess_v the_o weakness_n of_o the_o argument_n produce_v and_o 2_o because_o it_o do_v command_v we_o to_o obey_v superior_n civil_a and_o sacred_a in_o all_o lawful_a matter_n and_o so_o instruct_v we_o to_o submit_v to_o what_o be_v not_o forbid_v by_o god_n word_n when_o by_o superior_n it_o be_v command_v this_o be_v our_o tenet_n and_o this_o be_v a_o direct_a and_o a_o sufficient_a answer_n to_o this_o argument_n but_o on_o the_o other_o hand_n the_o tenet_n of_o some_o nonconformist_n own_v by_o this_o argument_n be_v this_o that_o no_o be_v superstition_n in_o they_o and_o therefore_o the_o true_a notion_n of_o superstition_n do_v extend_v to_o the_o forbearance_n of_o thing_n in_o themselves_o lawful_a as_o displease_v to_o god_n §_o 4_o now_o to_o apply_v these_o thing_n that_o the_o forbearance_n of_o the_o ceremony_n require_v by_o the_o church_n of_o england_n on_o supposition_n that_o they_o be_v lawful_a in_o themselves_o and_o yet_o be_v by_o dissenter_n abstain_v from_o as_o unlawful_a must_v be_v superstitious_a will_v be_v exceed_o evident_a 1._o because_o they_o do_v and_o must_v according_a to_o their_o principle_n esteem_v this_o their_o refusal_n to_o submit_v unto_o they_o when_o impose_v as_o a_o act_n of_o special_a honour_n to_o god_n it_o be_v a_o declaration_n of_o their_o mind_n that_o they_o think_v god_n dishonour_v by_o such_o act_n and_o therefore_o dare_v not_o comply_v with_o they_o it_o can_v be_v only_a fear_n of_o sin_v against_o god_n which_o can_v engage_v they_o because_o they_o do_v and_o must_v esteem_v god_n worship_n corrupt_v by_o the_o use_n of_o these_o our_o rite_n as_o to_o the_o purity_n and_o the_o spirituality_n of_o it_o and_o so_o they_o do_v esteem_v themselves_o by_o this_o forbearance_n preserver_n of_o his_o worship_n pure_a and_o spiritual_a and_o free_a from_o that_o idolatry_n and_o superstition_n with_o which_o they_o charge_v it_o submission_n of_o ourselves_o to_o the_o divine_a will_n and_o together_o with_o our_o most_o earnest_a prayer_n of_o that_o kind_n there_o be_v all_o along_o mingle_v that_o secret_a and_o more_o vehement_a desire_n of_o what_o god_n see_v best_a for_o we_o which_o be_v a_o grace_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n whereby_o the_o forwardness_n of_o our_o appetite_n after_o the_o ease_n and_o comfort_n of_o this_o world_n be_v correct_v and_o govern_v now_o though_o this_o earnest_a request_n be_v not_o utter_v the_o particular_a matter_n of_o it_o be_v not_o yet_o know_v since_o we_o be_v ignorant_a what_o will_v be_v most_o profitable_a for_o we_o yet_o he_o that_o search_v the_o heart_n understand_v it_o perfect_o and_o know_v that_o we_o vehement_o desire_v not_o so_o much_o that_o deliverance_n or_o worldly_a advantage_n which_o be_v the_o matter_n of_o our_o utter_v groan_n and_o prayer_n as_o that_o good_a which_o the_o spirit_n move_v we_o to_o pray_v for_o and_o which_o
