to_o stay_v whole_o from_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n upon_o this_o dread_n of_o it_o than_o to_o run_v to_o it_o careless_o and_o without_o any_o due_a regard_n of_o the_o sacredness_n of_o it_o upon_o these_o reason_n it_o may_v i_o think_v safe_o be_v say_v that_o christian_n now_o be_v in_o little_a danger_n of_o this_o sin_n and_o almost_o out_o of_o a_o possibility_n of_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o in_o the_o sense_n of_o this_o text_n and_o which_o the_o apostle_n tax_v the_o corinthian_n for_o sect_n iii_o have_v proceed_v so_o far_o upon_o the_o strict_a sense_n of_o this_o place_n and_o the_o direct_a design_n of_o the_o apostle_n in_o it_o i_o go_v on_o to_o a_o material_a scruple_n and_o a_o very_a important_a inquiry_n very_o fit_a to_o be_v consider_v and_o resolve_v and_o that_o be_v whether_o nothing_o be_v eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o beside_o this_o do_v a_o man_n never_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o but_o when_o he_o come_v drink_v to_o the_o lord_n table_n do_v not_o this_o open_a a_o gate_n to_o very_o great_a looseness_n and_o carelessness_n and_o make_v communicate_v worthy_o a_o very_a light_n and_o easy_a thing_n to_o what_o purpose_n need_v the_o good_a father_n of_o the_o church_n to_o have_v take_v so_o much_o pain_n to_o direct_v man_n how_o to_o fit_v and_o prepare_v themselves_o for_o this_o service_n and_o have_v press_v the_o observance_n of_o those_o prescription_n with_o so_o much_o earnestness_n as_o they_o do_v if_o this_o where_o the_o only_a instance_n in_o which_o man_n can_v eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o this_o i_o call_v a_o very_a considerable_a inquiry_n and_o therefore_o i_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o give_v it_o as_o plain_a and_o full_a satisfaction_n as_o i_o be_o able_a it_o seem_v to_o consist_v of_o several_a part_n to_o all_o which_o i_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o suit_v proper_a answer_n in_o these_o follow_a proposition_n 1._o whatever_o man_n may_v say_v or_o think_v in_o this_o matter_n this_o only_a be_v that_o eat_n and_o drink_v unworthy_o that_o the_o apostle_n mean_v in_o this_o place_n and_o to_o which_o he_o threaten_v this_o punishment_n this_o i_o have_v clear_v already_o and_o need_v not_o stand_v repeat_v it_o again_o not_o consider_v the_o lord_n body_n but_o eat_v the_o holy_a sacrament_n as_o a_o common_a meal_n be_v as_o regardless_o and_o intemperate_a at_o the_o lord_n table_n as_o man_n common_o be_v at_o their_o own_o be_v that_o sin_n of_o the_o corinthian_n which_o the_o apostle_n here_o tax_v and_o which_o he_o call_v eat_v &_o drink_v unworthy_o now_o if_o man_n will_v consider_v this_o it_o will_v be_v one_o good_a step_n towards_o their_o satisfaction_n in_o this_o case_n and_o of_o good_a use_n towards_o the_o remove_n their_o fear_n of_o eat_v unworthy_o for_o why_o shall_v man_n fear_v incur_v the_o same_o guilt_n unless_o they_o commit_v the_o same_o sin_n and_o while_o they_o be_v very_o sure_o they_o shall_v not_o commit_v the_o one_o why_o shall_v they_o discourage_v and_o afflict_v themselves_o with_o fear_n of_o the_o other_o it_o be_v neither_o safe_a nor_o fair_a deal_n to_o apply_v passage_n of_o scripture_n beyond_o their_o own_o proper_a intendment_n and_o few_o thing_n have_v do_v more_o harm_n in_o divinity_n than_o this_o as_o we_o can_v establish_v or_o prove_v the_o truth_n of_o doctrine_n from_o the_o bare_a corinthian_n be_v guilty_a of_o or_o that_o every_o christian_n be_v therefore_o liable_a to_o the_o same_o damnation_n that_o we_o think_v they_o be_v threaten_v withal_o the_o corinthian_n do_v not_o discern_v the_o lord_n body_n make_v no_o difference_n between_o the_o sacrament_n and_o a_o common_a meal_n come_v drink_v to_o the_o lord_n table_n and_o in_o a_o condition_n that_o make_v same_o holy_a qualification_n of_o mind_n and_o temper_v necessary_a to_o the_o discharge_n other_o service_n of_o religion_n as_o to_o this_o the_o same_o zeal_n and_o fervour_n of_o spirit_n the_o same_o devotion_n and_o height_n of_o soul_n the_o same_o sequester_v our_o mind_n from_o all_o other_o employment_n and_o thought_n the_o same_o high_a thought_n of_o god_n and_o his_o goodness_n the_o same_o close_a attention_n of_o mind_n the_o same_o care_n to_o free_v ourselves_o from_o all_o injustice_n wrath_n uncleanness_n and_o every_o thing_n that_o may_v render_v we_o unfit_a to_o converse_v with_o our_o god_n and_o to_o receive_v blessing_n from_o he_o all_o these_o thing_n and_o the_o same_o measure_n and_o degree_n of_o they_o too_o be_v equal_o necessary_a for_o we_o when_o we_o pray_v as_o well_o as_o when_o we_o communicate_v in_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n you_o will_v find_v the_o scripture_n still_o speak_v thus_o and_o require_v all_o these_o thing_n as_o necessary_a to_o endear_v we_o to_o god_n and_o to_o recommend_v any_o of_o our_o performance_n to_o his_o gracious_a acceptation_n and_o if_o so_o upon_o what_o reason_n can_v we_o suspect_v more_o difficulty_n much_o more_o and_o think_v it_o to_o be_v much_o more_o terrible_a than_o the_o guilt_n of_o the_o like_a failure_n in_o other_o service_n of_o their_o religion_n but_o for_o my_o part_n i_o can_v not_o understand_v any_o true_a reason_n for_o this_o it_o happen_v here_o as_o it_o usual_o do_v in_o panic_n fear_n there_o be_v no_o real_a ground_n or_o cause_n of_o they_o and_o nothing_o that_o i_o know_v of_o beside_o word_n and_o a_o prejudicate_v opinion_n to_o incline_v we_o to_o think_v that_o there_o be_v it_o be_v doubtless_o a_o great_a sin_n to_o communicate_v unworthy_o without_o due_a respect_n and_o reverence_n and_o without_o care_n to_o demean_v ourselves_o as_o become_v so_o sacred_a a_o service_n of_o our_o religion_n but_o so_o it_o be_v also_o to_o pray_v or_o to_o from_o any_o sign_n of_o devotion_n as_o in_o our_o own_o to_o say_v over_o a_o few_o prayer_n without_o any_o due_a regard_n to_o the_o majesty_n of_o he_o we_o be_v pray_v unto_o without_o any_o just_a sense_n of_o the_o importance_n of_o the_o thing_n we_o be_v pray_v for_o and_o without_o any_o close_a intention_n of_o mind_n to_o what_o we_o be_v do_v to_o lay_v ourselves_o down_o to_o sleep_v when_o god_n be_v speak_v to_o we_o and_o when_o a_o message_n be_v deliver_v unto_o we_o out_o of_o that_o divine_a word_n by_o which_o we_o shall_v be_v judge_v at_o the_o last_o day_n i_o be_o sure_a these_o be_v sin_n of_o a_o very_a grand_a guilt_n and_o i_o be_o sure_a the_o holy_a scripture_n always_o speak_v of_o they_o as_o such_o i_o will_v to_o god_n man_n will_v sober_o consider_v that_o they_o be_v so_o we_o may_v then_o hope_v to_o see_v the_o public_a worship_n of_o god_n perform_v at_o another_o rate_n than_o general_o it_o be_v and_o i_o add_v that_o according_a to_o the_o common_a language_n of_o scripture_n they_o be_v sin_n every_o whit_n as_o big_a of_o as_o deep_a a_o dye_n as_o grand_a guilt_n as_o communicate_v undue_o in_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n be_v or_o can_v reasonable_o be_v think_v to_o be_v when_o any_o man_n will_v undertake_v to_o make_v out_o the_o difference_n upon_o any_o sound_a reason_n we_o may_v begin_v to_o question_v this_o unworthy_o or_o pray_v unworthy_o the_o guilt_n be_v real_o the_o same_o in_o one_o case_n as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o other_o and_o therefore_o equal_o to_o be_v dread_v and_o avoid_v in_o both_o and_o if_o it_o be_v a_o honest_a true_a dread_n of_o sin_n that_o be_v upon_o we_o it_o will_v startle_v we_o and_o render_v we_o afraid_a of_o it_o in_o one_o case_n as_o well_o as_o in_o the_o other_o it_o be_v a_o stale_a cheat_n that_o the_o enemy_n of_o soul_n have_v too_o often_o put_v upon_o man_n in_o render_v they_o mighty_a tender_a and_o scrupulous_a in_o some_o thing_n but_o careless_a altogether_o in_o other_o as_o if_o care_n in_o one_o instance_n of_o our_o duty_n will_v atone_v our_o wilful_a regardlesness_n in_o another_o s._n james_n i_o be_o sure_a tell_v we_o another_o story_n jam._n 2.10.11_o where_o in_o his_o judgement_n he_o that_o wilful_o indulge_v himself_o in_o the_o breach_n of_o one_o precept_n of_o the_o law_n be_v guilty_a of_o all_o because_o the_o same_o authority_n of_o god_n be_v contemn_v in_o one_o that_o be_v in_o another_o or_o in_o all_o for_o he_o that_o say_v do_v not_o commit_v adultery_n say_v also_o do_v not_o kill_v etc._n etc._n i_o hearty_o wish_v that_o man_n will_v not_o put_v the_o same_o fallacy_n upon_o themselves_o sin_n and_o guilt_n be_v to_o be_v dread_v in_o one_o thing_n as_o well_o as_o another_o and_o if_o it_o be_v not_o so_o by_o we_o if_o we_o be_v scrupulous_a only_o one_o way_n but_o not_o the_o other_o if_o we_o be_v so_o very_o fearful_a of_o sin_v in_o do_v of_o one_o service_n of_o our_o religion_n amiss_o and_o not_o another_o it_o be_v too_o plain_a the_o devil_n or_o our_o own_o deceitful_a heart_n put_v a_o trick_n upon_o we_o it_o be_v some_o other_o reason_n that_o govern_v we_o and_o keep_v we_o from_o our_o duty_n and_o not_o a_o honest_a conscience_n and_o fear_n of_o do_v it_o amiss_o for_o that_o fear_n will_v make_v we_o afraid_a of_o the_o same_o sin_n in_o do_v other_o his_o command_n have_v make_v necessary_a and_o therefore_o when_o we_o come_v to_o weigh_v argument_n in_o this_o case_n we_o shall_v always_o incline_v most_o to_o those_o which_o teach_v we_o our_o duty_n and_o encourage_v we_o in_o it_o because_o this_o be_v certain_o the_o safe_a side_n nay_o i_o add_v further_o that_o be_v our_o mind_n pure_o pendulous_a be_v there_o argument_n on_o both_o side_n of_o the_o question_n that_o appear_v equal_o true_a and_o conclude_a so_o that_o we_o be_v not_o able_a to_o put_v a_o difference_n between_o they_o nor_o know_v which_o to_o incline_v unto_o yet_o this_o alone_o be_v enough_o to_o turn_v the_o scale_n one_o do_v invite_v and_o encourage_v i_o to_o do_v my_o duty_n what_o i_o see_v the_o plain_a command_n of_o god_n for_o the_o other_o do_v discourage_v and_o fright_v i_o from_o it_o and_o therefore_o if_o i_o be_v not_o able_a to_o discover_v by_o any_o internal_a signature_n on_o which_o side_n the_o truth_n do_v lie_v yet_o take_v off_o this_o exception_n and_o if_o man_n remember_v the_o true_a notion_n of_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o in_o this_o place_n it_o will_v go_v near_o to_o relieve_v whole_o their_o fear_n in_o this_o thing_n for_o i_o have_v show_v that_o it_o be_v not_o every_o failure_n in_o receive_v the_o holy_a sacrament_n that_o bring_v a_o man_n within_o the_o reach_n of_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o in_o the_o sense_n of_o this_o text_n but_o only_o that_o gross_a and_o scandalous_a profanation_n of_o it_o that_o the_o corinthian_n be_v guilty_a of_o or_o something_o that_o in_o true_a proportion_n answer_v to_o it_o and_o consequent_o that_o it_o be_v not_o every_o such_o failure_n that_o bring_v a_o man_n within_o the_o danger_n of_o that_o damnation_n that_o the_o apostle_n speak_v of_o man_n need_v not_o present_o fear_v be_v damn_v upon_o every_o error_n and_o little_a failure_n in_o do_v their_o duty_n they_o have_v a_o more_o merciful_a god_n to_o deal_v with_o who_o do_v not_o weigh_v man_n by_o grain_n and_o scruple_n but_o rate_v their_o service_n as_o he_o do_v their_o life_n by_o the_o general_a frame_n and_o bent_n of_o they_o and_o provide_v that_o man_n do_v their_o duty_n and_o honest_o endeavour_v to_o do_v it_o as_o well_o as_o they_o can_v have_v promise_v to_o accept_v they_o though_o many_o imperfection_n stick_v to_o they_o and_o such_o as_o shall_v he_o deal_v in_o strict_a justice_n may_v cause_v he_o to_o reject_v and_o abhor_v they_o in_o short_a it_o be_v only_o that_o monstrous_a profanation_n of_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n which_o certain_a here_o it_o may_v signify_v the_o one_o or_o it_o may_v signify_v the_o
who_o immediate_a service_n religion_n be_v will_v not_o only_o offer_v the_o sacrifice_n of_o fool_n but_o of_o something_o worse_a not_o only_o defeat_v the_o end_n and_o acceptance_n of_o their_o that_o ought_v to_o stick_v fast_o upon_o some_o man_n thought_n for_o if_o there_o be_v no_o salvation_n out_o of_o the_o church_n of_o christ_n and_o those_o be_v not_o in_o this_o church_n that_o do_v not_o join_v in_o her_o communion_n and_o those_o do_v not_o do_v this_o who_o do_v not_o communicate_v in_o her_o sacrament_n than_o some_o man_n condition_n must_v be_v very_o hazardous_a and_o
