respect_n of_o the_o magistrate_n he_o shall_v have_v the_o better_a subject_n by_o it_o good_a christian_n be_v the_o best_a subject_n and_o the_o knowledge_n of_o religion_n and_o god_n word_n make_v man_n obey_v not_o for_o fear_n or_o custom_n but_o for_o conscience_n sake_n and_o for_o fear_n of_o god_n displeasure_n and_o beside_o it_o make_v man_n humble_a and_o charitable_a humble_v not_o to_o think_v themselves_o too_o good_a to_o obey_v and_o charitable_a in_o not_o suspect_v the_o meaning_n of_o prince_n further_o than_o they_o must_v needs_o and_o it_o restrain_v the_o excessive_a pronesse_n of_o man_n nature_n that_o be_v without_o religion_n apt_a to_o speak_v evil_a of_o those_o that_o be_v in_o authority_n and_o chief_o because_o true_a religion_n will_v make_v of_o man_n as_o not_o to_o be_v so_o forward_a and_o busy_a about_o the_o duty_n of_o religion_n further_o a_o question_n may_v be_v here_o ask_v why_o the_o duty_n of_o magistrate_n be_v not_o here_o set_v down_o as_o well_o as_o the_o duty_n of_o subject_n i_o answer_v that_o in_o those_o time_n of_o the_o apostle_n the_o magistrate_n be_v without_o so_o far_o from_o be_v christian_n that_o unfaithfulnesse_n doct._n 6._o that_o whereas_o wrong_v can_v be_v redress_v by_o a_o lawful_a mean_n on_o earth_n they_o must_v be_v endure_v without_o use_v unlawful_a mean_n and_o leave_v the_o injury_n to_o the_o judgement_n of_o god_n which_o condemn_v servant_n that_o be_v hardly_o use_v run_v away_o from_o their_o master_n as_o hagar_n do_v from_o sarah_n or_o else_o with_o wicked_a murmur_a and_o revile_v backbite_v their_o master_n and_o so_o it_o condemn_v the_o wicked_a practice_n of_o our_o gentry_n in_o right_v their_o wrong_n by_o their_o own_o private_a revenge_n which_o case_n be_v abominable_a first_o because_o their_o wrong_n may_v be_v right_v by_o the_o magistrate_n second_o because_o the_o desire_a revenge_n be_v far_o above_o the_o injury_n for_o they_o seek_v satisfaction_n in_o blood_n for_o a_o suppose_a wrong_n in_o reputation_n three_o because_o it_o be_v a_o course_n direct_o against_o the_o law_n of_o god_n and_o of_o king_n and_o have_v be_v condemn_v in_o all_o well_o govern_v state_n
for_o evil_n note_v there_o three_o thing_n first_o that_o he_o give_v this_o as_o a_o special_a charge_n as_o a_o thing_n most_o hateful_a or_o ill-beseeming_a a_o christian._n second_o what_o he_o say_v no_o man_n must_v do_v it_o great_a man_n have_v no_o more_o liberty_n by_o private_a quarrel_n to_o revenge_v their_o dishonour_n or_o hurt_v than_o mean_v man_n three_o that_o he_o say_v to_o no_o man_n we_o must_v not_o render_v evil_a to_o any_o man_n of_o any_o religion_n condition_n or_o estate_n whatsoever_o the_o injury_n be_v so_o rome_n 12.17_o the_o like_a charge_n be_v give_v and_o two_o excellent_a reason_n against_o private_a revenge_n one_o because_o vengeance_n belong_v to_o god_n only_o it_o be_v his_o office_n and_o it_o be_v best_a god_n shall_v revenge_v because_o he_o give_v recompense_n to_o every_o transgression_n and_o beside_o he_o give_v a_o just_a recompense_n heb._n 2.2_o whereas_o man_n that_o will_v perform_v their_o own_o revenge_n give_v or_o seek_v rather_o the_o contrary_n god_n vengeance_n fall_v upon_o they_o for_o take_v his_o office_n out_o of_o his_o hand_n as_o many_o of_o those_o that_o seek_v the_o blood_n of_o other_o in_o revenge_n lose_v their_o own_o heb._n 10.30_o also_o it_o be_v worth_a the_o note_n that_o in_o that_o place_n to_o the_o roman_n the_o apostle_n add_v another_o reason_n against_o private_a revenge_n which_o great_o cross_v the_o proud_a and_o passionate_a spirit_n of_o our_o time_n and_o that_o be_v couch_v in_o these_o word_n be_v not_o overcome_v of_o evil_a but_o overcome_v evil_a with_o goodness_n which_o word_n import_v that_o he_o be_v over_o comâ—â—_n and_o have_v lose_v his_o honour_n that_o will_v revenge_v and_o contrariwise_o he_o do_v overcome_v that_o will_v render_v good_a for_o evil_n if_o this_o point_n be_v serious_o consider_v it_o will_v mighty_o subdue_v that_o unruly_a pride_n and_o â—_z that_o discover_v itself_o in_o the_o most_o man_n and_o it_o do_v direct_o prove_v that_o duel_n or_o single_a combat_n be_v simple_o unlawful_a and_o intolerable_a in_o any_o well_o govern_v commonwealth_n and_o shall_v warn_v all_o christian_n to_o take_v heed_n of_o allow_v themselves_o in_o the_o desire_n or_o project_n of_o revenge_n nor_o be_v their_o sin_n the_o less_o that_o seek_v revenge_n but_o it_o be_v close_o and_o much_o dissemble_v while_o they_o watch_v for_o a_o opportunity_n to_o be_v even_o with_o they_o that_o have_v wrong_v they_o nor_o revile_v for_o revile_v observe_v 1._o that_o people_n that_o be_v ungodly_a be_v very_o prone_a to_o revile_v this_o we_o may_v see_v in_o the_o conversation_n they_o have_v among_o their_o neighbour_n what_o brawl_v and_o scold_n from_o day_n to_o day_n and_o also_o in_o the_o case_n of_o religion_n how_o do_v they_o continual_o reproach_n and_o slander_v the_o true_a christian_n so_o in_o family_n affair_n with_o what_o disgraceful_a and_o hateful_a term_n be_v all_o the_o business_n almost_o of_o the_o household_n dispatch_v but_o of_o this_o i_o speak_v before_o 2._o that_o revile_v and_o rail_v be_v a_o very_a hateful_a sin_n it_o be_v here_o account_v a_o great_a suffering_n to_o suffer_v revile_v our_o saviour_n reckon_v it_o murder_n in_o his_o exposition_n of_o the_o six_o commandment_n mat_n 5._o and_o if_o godly_a man_n be_v revile_v it_o be_v term_v blasphemy_n in_o call_v good_a evil_n isaiah_n 5.20_o 21._o 1_o pet._n 4.5_o and_o such_o as_o revile_v those_o that_o be_v near_o unto_o they_o in_o the_o strong_a bond_n of_o nature_n or_o covenant_n as_o when_o wife_n revile_v their_o husband_n or_o child_n their_o parent_n 3._o that_o though_o we_o be_v revile_v yet_o we_o must_v not_o revile_v again_o because_o revile_v be_v a_o sin_n and_o god_n have_v flat_o forbid_v it_o in_o this_o and_o other_o scripture_n and_o beside_o we_o have_v a_o excellent_a example_n of_o our_o saviour_n himself_o that_o suffer_v all_o sort_n of_o reproach_n and_o yet_o be_v so_o far_o from_o revile_v that_o he_o threaten_v noâ—_n 1_o pet._n 2._o and_o all_o sort_n of_o godly_a man_n have_v endure_v revile_v that_o be_v many_o degree_n better_o than_o thou_o and_o further_o what_o know_v thou_o but_o god_n may_v bless_v thou_o for_o their_o curse_v as_o david_n say_v and_o therefore_o all_o that_o be_v true_a christian_n shall_v be_v effectual_o warn_v from_o hence_o to_o resolve_v against_o bitter_a word_n and_o revile_v though_o they_o be_v never_o so_o much_o provoke_v thus_o of_o the_o rule_v the_o apostle_n give_v for_o avoid_v of_o trouble_n now_o follow_v the_o argument_n for_o the_o confirmation_n of_o those_o rule_n especial_o of_o the_o late_a and_o the_o first_o be_v take_v from_o the_o estate_n or_o condition_n of_o a_o christian_a in_o this_o verse_n the_o second_v from_o the_o prophet_n david_n ver_fw-la 10_o 11_o 12._o and_o the_o three_o from_o the_o probable_a event_n or_o effect_n of_o such_o a_o course_n ver_fw-la 13._o in_o the_o rest_n of_o this_o verse_n he_o infer_v from_o their_o call_n to_o god_n blessing_n that_o they_o shall_v be_v so_o far_o from_o curse_v and_o revile_v that_o they_o shall_v use_v no_o other_o language_n than_o blessing_n even_o to_o the_o wicked_a and_o their_o adversary_n but_o contrariwise_o this_o very_a term_n import_v that_o the_o life_n and_o discourse_n of_o a_o true_a christian_n shall_v be_v not_o only_o different_a from_o the_o life_n and_o language_n of_o wicked_a man_n but_o in_o many_o thing_n contrary_a and_o it_o must_v needs_o be_v so_o because_o the_o godly_a and_o wicked_a arise_v from_o a_o contrary_a fountain_n the_o one_o bear_v after_o the_o flesh_n the_o other_o after_o the_o spirit_n gal._n â—4_n and_o their_o word_n and_o action_n flow_v from_o contrary_a principle_n for_o the_o one_o be_v lead_v by_o the_o old_a man_n the_o other_o by_o the_o new_a manâ—_n and_o they_o have_v from_o without_o contrary_a leader_n the_o one_o lead_v by_o the_o devil_n eph._n â—_o the_o other_o by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n rom._n 8._o and_o further_o they_o trade_n about_o contrary_a commodity_n the_o one_o for_o earthly_a thing_n only_a iâ—_n the_o â—ther_n for_o heavenly_a the_o one_o for_o thing_n of_o this_o world_n the_o other_o for_o thing_n of_o another_o world_n and_o last_o they_o go_v contrary_a way_n the_o one_o to_o hell_n the_o other_o to_o heaven_n and_o therefore_o there_o can_v be_v no_o agreement_n between_o they_o no_o more_o than_o between_o ligth_n and_o darkness_n christ_n and_o belial_n this_o point_n serve_v for_o great_a reproof_n of_o some_o weak_a christian_n for_o come_v so_o near_o the_o way_n of_o carnal_a man_n as_o they_o can_v hardly_o be_v distinguish_v from_o they_o that_o look_v so_o like_o they_o such_o be_v those_o corinthian_n saint_n paul_n reprove_v 1._o cor._n 3._o 1_o 2_o 3._o bless_v it_o be_v require_v of_o all_o true_a christian_n that_o they_o shall_v bless_v their_o conversation_n shall_v express_v blessing_n continual_o now_o for_o the_o understanding_n of_o this_o point_n we_o must_v know_v that_o man_n be_v say_v in_o scripture_n to_o bless_v â—ither_o god_n or_o man_n he_o bless_v god_n when_o he_o praise_v his_o mercy_n and_o acknowledge_v his_o blessing_n he_o add_v nothing_o to_o god_n blessedness_n but_o only_o acknowledge_v god_n bless_a nature_n and_o deal_v towards_o man_n this_o exercise_n of_o blessing_n god_n begin_v betimes_o in_o the_o world_n as_o gen._n 14.20_o and_o be_v constant_o continue_v in_o all_o age_n among_o the_o godly_a but_o in_o
