nay_o the_o rule_n of_o the_o spirit_n or_o immediate_a word_n which_o the_o ancient_n have_v before_o the_o scripture_n be_v write_v be_v a_o more_o infallible_a rule_n than_o the_o scripture_n for_o they_o may_v be_v corrupt_v but_o to_o go_v round_o again_o they_o can_v be_v separate_v in_o their_o nature_n and_o purity_n etc._n etc._n be_v it_o not_o easy_a to_o see_v here_o what_o a_o labyrinth_n of_o confusion_n and_o self-contradiction_n thou_o be_v run_v into_o who_o have_v presume_v to_o confute_v other_o though_o to_o thy_o own_o final_a confutation_n and_o see_v thou_o pretend_v to_o pray_v for_o and_o own_o the_o spirit_n of_o truth_n in_o its_o help_n or_o work_v as_o thou_o say_v in_o the_o word_n do_v tho●_n mean_a that_o the_o spirit_n be_v in_o the_o scripture_n not_o distinct_a from_o they_o or_o that_o it_o can_v be_v separate_v from_o the_o letter_n according_a to_o thy_o word_n before_o what_o then_o do_v thou_o think_v that_o the_o spirit_n be_v essential_a in_o the_o write_n and_o so_o that_o all_o that_o have_v the_o scripture_n must_v needs_o have_v the_o spirit_n as_o it_o follow_v from_o thy_o own_o word_n whereas_o there_o be_v a_o multitude_n of_o example_n to_o the_o contrary_a even_o in_o this_o age_n and_o nation_n of_o both_o many_o hypocrite_n and_o empty_a professor_n and_o other_o who_o be_v not_o lead_v by_o the_o true_a spirit_n and_o yet_o have_v the_o scripture_n as_o also_o thou_o thyself_o who_o profess_v the_o scripture_n to_o be_v thy_o only_a rule_n yet_o be_v find_v in_o confusion_n and_o error_n which_o god_n be_v not_o the_o author_n of_o not_o yet_o his_o spirit_n and_o what_o scripture_n have_v thou_o that_o say_v these_o word_n viz._n the_o new-testament_n letter_n be_v to_o be_v our_o rule_n produce_v plain_a scripture_n for_o these_o word_n and_o it_o shall_v end_v the_o controversy_n or_o otherwise_o be_v ashamed_a of_o profess_v the_o scripture_n thy_o only_a rule_n when_o thou_o will_v not_o be_v rule_v by_o they_o but_o presume_v to_o assert_v what_o thou_o can_v not_o prove_v therein_o and_o yet_o for_o all_o thy_o high_a assertion_n and_o title_n put_v upon_o the_o scripture_n thou_o have_v confess_v that_o another_o foundation_n can_v no_o man_n lay_v than_o that_o which_o be_v already_o lay_v which_o be_v christ_n jesus_n 1_o cor._n 3.11_o but_o have_v not_o thou_o often_o assay_v to_o have_v lay_v another_o foundation_n for_o faith_n and_o assurance_n even_o the_o scripture_n or_o the_o letter_n yet_o know_v not_o but_o that_o they_o may_v be_v corrupt_v what_o a_o implicit_a faith_n will_v thou_o beget_v all_o people_n into_o of_o that_o which_o thou_o can_v give_v no_o infallible_a demonstration_n of_o if_o thou_o shall_v thus_o preach_v to_o the_o jew_n turk_n or_o infidel_n and_o tell_v they_o the_o scripture_n or_o letter_n of_o the_o new_a testament_n must_v be_v their_o only_a rule_n for_o salvation_n as_o thou_o say_v it_o must_v be_v for_o all_o man_n to_o the_o world_n end_n and_o then_o shall_v tell_v they_o that_o corrupt_a man_n for_o aught_o thou_o know_v have_v corrupt_v the_o scripture_n what_o conviction_n think_v thou_o will_v this_o work_n upon_o they_o and_o how_o will_v it_o answer_v either_o that_o light_n or_o reason_n that_o be_v in_o they_o and_o while_o thou_o seem_v not_o to_o own_o the_o immediate_a teach_n of_o god_n or_o his_o spirit_n now_o for_o the_o rule_n but_o the_o new_a testament_n letter_n or_o scripture_n only_o how_o come_v thou_o by_o thy_o faith_n concern_v they_o and_o if_o thou_o mean_v that_o the_o doctrine_n contain_v in_o the_o new_a testament_n be_v the_o rule_n and_o not_o the_o letter_n abstractive_o then_o how_o shall_v a_o man_n know_v these_o dostrine_n and_o which_o do_v particular_o relate_v to_o his_o state_n and_o condition_n see_v there_o be_v diversity_n of_o state_n write_v to_o do_v not_o many_o misapply_v they_o while_o they_o place_v the_o rule_n only_o in_o the_o literal_a prescription_n and_o do_v not_o begin_v in_o the_o spirit_n which_o give_v forth_o the_o wholesome_a doctrine_n in_o scripture_n which_o spirit_n be_v still_o sufficient_a to_o lead_v into_o all_o truth_n and_o do_v immediate_o teach_v the_o same_o wholesome_a doctrine_n and_o now_o though_o every_o wholesome_a direction_n or_o doctrine_n prescribe_v may_v admit_v of_o the_o term_n a_o rule_n as_o it_o be_v right_o receive_v which_o thing_n i_o grant_v i_o thereby_o do_v no_o more_o grant_v the_o scripture_n to_o be_v the_o only_a rule_n than_o that_o they_o be_v the_o only_a word_n because_o i_o grant_v that_o word_n of_o god_n be_v record_v in_o they_o for_o to_o say_v the_o scripture-letter_n or_o write_n be_v the_o only_a rule_n of_o faith_n for_o all_o be_v a_o gross_a mistake_n and_o exclude_v the_o immediate_a teach_n rule_n and_o law_n of_o the_o spirit_n which_o every_o spiritual_a mind_n be_v lead_v by_o and_o suppose_v no_o true_a faith_n but_o what_o the_o letter_n or_o write_n be_v the_o ground_n or_o rule_n of_o whereas_o it_o can_v be_v but_o a_o historical_a traditional_a and_o implicit_a faith_n that_o be_v mere_o found_v upon_o tradition_n and_o letter_n and_o not_o spirit_n or_o th●t_o that_o be_v without_o the_o divine_a and_o immediate_a illumination_n of_o the_o spirit_n without_o which_o be_v no_o divine_a faith_n but_o man_n knowledge_n faith_n and_o religion_n be_v all_o but_o traditional_a literal_a and_o lifeless_a for_o in_o the_o true_a knowledge_n of_o the_o scripture_n there_o must_v be_v a_o immediate_a reflection_n of_o divine_a light_n upon_o the_o understanding_n from_o that_o infallible_a spirit_n which_o they_o be_v minister_n of_o who_o can_v true_o distinguish_v between_o the_o ministration_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o that_o of_o the_o letter_n which_o thou_o have_v not_o do_v p._n 104._o who_o say_v the_o scripture_n of_o the_o new-testament_n be_v the_o spirit_n new_a administration_n from_o whence_o it_o follow_v that_o all_o that_o can_v preach_v those_o scripture_n be_v minister_n of_o the_o spirit_n or_o new-testament_n whereas_o many_o both_o can_v re●d_v and_o preach_v they_o
