the_o next_o word_n unto_o sanctification_n of_o the_o spirit_n he_o see_v good_a sign_n of_o sanctification_n in_o they_o and_o that_o they_o suffer_v persecution_n for_o religion_n sake_n therefore_o he_o so_o hope_v of_o they_o he_o so_o style_v they_o we_o shall_v not_o only_o labour_v to_o have_v sound_a testimony_n to_o ourselves_o of_o our_o election_n and_o salvation_n god_n but_o so_o live_v as_o we_o may_v get_v a_o good_a and_o full_a testimony_n thereof_o in_o the_o conscience_n and_o mind_n of_o the_o church_n and_o brethren_n with_o who_o we_o live_v for_o a_o hate_v disgrace_v and_o persecute_v they_o account_v they_o mad_a and_o esteem_v base_o of_o they_o even_o before_o they_o i_o say_v they_o shall_v be_v honour_v of_o god_n as_o it_o will_v be_v a_o torment_n to_o the_o wicked_a to_o see_v christ_n who_o they_o have_v pierce_v to_o be_v in_o such_o high_a dignity_n and_o power_n so_o will_v it_o increase_v their_o torment_n to_o see_v they_o who_o they_o so_o base_o esteem_v of_o as_o not_o worthy_a to_o live_v to_o be_v receive_v into_o honour_n and_o stand_v on_o christ_n right_a hand_n and_o themselves_o of_o who_o they_o be_v so_o well_o conceit_v cast_v out_o but_o its_o just_a with_o god_n that_o they_o which_o willing_o and_o of_o purpose_n have_v vex_v and_o disgrace_v his_o servant_n here_o on_o earth_n shall_v against_o good_a minister_n in_o the_o commendation_n of_o their_o people_n not_o of_o flattery_n that_o be_v abominable_a and_o be_v men-pleasers_a they_o can_v not_o be_v christ_n servant_n nor_o out_o of_o a_o conceit_n that_o they_o have_v go_v far_o enough_o and_o now_o may_v stand_v at_o a_o stay_n that_o be_v senseless_a 10._o for_o that_o we_o have_v be_v nothing_o to_o that_o we_o may_v have_v have_v or_o shall_v have_v and_o want_v but_o to_o be_v a_o spur_n to_o provoke_v they_o to_o go_v on_o forward_o it_o be_v a_o shame_n for_o they_o not_o to_o satisfy_v the_o expectation_n of_o that_o the_o minister_n rather_o show_v what_o he_o will_v be_v in_o they_o or_o shall_v be_v in_o they_o than_o what_o be_v indeed_o in_o they_o and_o that_o he_o will_v not_o have_v they_o stand_v at_o a_o stay_n but_o proceed_v and_o go_v on_o more_o and_o more_o speak_v we_o particular_o first_o of_o their_o faith_n though_o last_o set_v down_o as_o without_o which_o there_o can_v be_v no_o true_a love_n they_o never_o see_v christ_n yet_o they_o believe_v in_o he_o they_o see_v the_o scripture_n speak_v of_o he_o to_o come_v they_o hear_v of_o he_o also_o by_o faithful_a witness_n the_o apostle_n have_v preach_v of_o his_o person_n birth_n life_n death_n resurrection_n and_o ascension_n and_o that_o he_o come_v to_o save_v they_o that_o be_v lose_v this_o they_o believe_v and_o so_o believe_v in_o he_o for_o salvation_n though_o they_o see_v he_o not_o this_o show_v the_o nature_n of_o true_a faith_n reason_n namely_o to_o believe_v thing_n not_o only_o that_o we_o see_v
1_o if_o preacher_n allege_v father_n counsel_n schoolman_n etc._n etc._n o_o how_o they_o applaud_v they_o but_o if_o any_o shall_v allege_v scripture_n proper_o and_o plain_o oh_o he_o be_v a_o plain_a homespun_a preacher_n he_o may_v do_v well_o in_o a_o country_n town_n but_o christ_n sheep_n do_v otherwise_o they_o reverence_v and_o adore_v above_o all_o the_o word_n of_o god_n this_o condemn_v the_o papist_n 2._o that_o deal_v most_o treacherous_o and_o will_v not_o have_v the_o scripture_n to_o be_v judge_n but_o father_n counsel_n the_o church_n and_o who_o be_v the_o church_n but_o themselves_o and_o the_o head_n of_o counsel_n but_o the_o pope_n and_o so_o upon_o the_o point_n the_o pope_n be_v the_o church_n and_o so_o its_o like_a enough_o to_o go_v well_o on_o their_o side_n and_o in_o their_o counsel_n who_o be_v any_o thing_n but_o the_o pope_n and_o his_o consistory_n as_o he_o will_v have_v every_o thing_n so_o it_o shall_v be_v as_o in_o their_o last_o council_n of_o trent_n which_o they_o so_o magnify_v as_o the_o most_o sacred_a assembly_n that_o ever_o be_v which_o indeed_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o a_o conspiracy_n of_o traitor_n against_o the_o crown_n and_o dignity_n of_o christ_n jesus_n and_o his_o truth_n there_o such_o be_v pick_v as_o be_v fast_o to_o the_o pope_n and_o the_o religion_n of_o rome_n and_o such_o as_o be_v swear_v to_o be_v true_a thereto_o and_o when_o some_o few_o speak_v somewhat_o more_o bold_o in_o some_o thing_n than_o be_v well_o like_v of_o they_o be_v quick_o pack_v out_o and_o this_o charge_n they_o have_v after_o they_o have_v sit_v a_o while_n that_o they_o shall_v interpret_v no_o scripture_n but_o such_o as_o may_v stand_v with_o the_o doctrine_n of_o rome_n this_o be_v good_a stuff_n that_o whereas_o they_o shall_v have_v bring_v their_o doctrine_n to_o the_o rule_n of_o scripture_n they_o must_v bring_v scripture_n to_o their_o doctrine_n as_o if_o the_o carpenter_n shall_v cut_v his_o rule_n according_a to_o the_o piece_n and_o not_o the_o piece_n according_a to_o his_o rule_n and_o howsoever_o they_o sit_v there_o at_o trent_n dispute_v for_o a_o fashion_n yet_o nothing_o be_v conclude_v but_o such_o as_o the_o pope_n and_o his_o consistory_n at_o rome_n devise_v which_o be_v set_v to_o they_o they_o be_v to_o publish_v and_o thus_o the_o party_n become_v judge_n and_o for_o it_o till_o it_o be_v too_o late_a such_o be_v the_o wicked_a that_o put_v off_o their_o repentance_n he_o be_v a_o fool_n that_o will_v laugh_v be_v in_o extreme_a danger_n or_o be_v tell_v quite_o we_o be_v all_o as_o quiet_a as_o can_v be_v till_o he_o come_v but_o now_o there_o be_v such_o find_n of_o fault_n and_o bring_v up_o new_a order_n as_o we_o can_v tell_v what_o to_o say_v a_o good_a many_o of_o the_o best_a of_o the_o parish_n will_v do_v what_o they_o can_v to_o remove_v he_o etc._n etc._n thus_o the_o world_n love_v read_v minister_n they_o say_v of_o scholar_n they_o be_v the_o most_o conscionable_a they_o care_v not_o how_o little_o they_o have_v for_o their_o money_n but_o its_o true_a also_o of_o a_o number_n of_o silly_a miserable_a people_n they_o can_v have_v no_o more_o of_o a_o man_n then_o his_o good_a will_n they_o say_v but_o they_o will_v not_o say_v so_o of_o a_o carpenter_n or_o any_o workman_n or_o servant_n they_o hire_v if_o they_o do_v not_o the_o business_n they_o be_v set_v about_o they_o will_v have_v other_o let_v he_o speak_v as_o the_o oracle_n of_o god_n that_o be_v both_o preach_v the_o very_a truth_n and_o word_n of_o god_n and_o as_o its_o meet_a or_o as_o it_o become_v the_o word_n to_o be_v handle_v minister_n must_v preach_v the_o word_n of_o god_n god_n they_o must_v not_o deliver_v any_o thing_n to_o their_o people_n but_o that_o which_o they_o have_v receive_v of_o god_n so_o do_v both_o the_o prophet_n and_o apostle_n they_o stand_v in_o god_n room_n and_o be_v to_o bring_v his_o message_n neither_o must_v they_o deliver_v any_o word_n whereof_o they_o may_v not_o true_o affirm_v thus_o say_v the_o lord_n this_o be_v the_o word_n of_o the_o lord_n nothing_o else_o feed_v the_o soul_n other_o thing_n be_v poison_n or_o chaff_n yea_o we_o may_v answer_v for_o what_o we_o say_v before_o god_n upon_o our_o salvation_n or_o damnation_n 1._o this_o reprove_v divers_a 1_o as_o namely_o such_o as_o by_o their_o erroneous_a doctrine_n destroy_v soul_n they_o give_v in_o stead_n of_o a_o egg_n a_o scorpion_n and_o for_o food_n poison_n such_o as_o by_o tell_v strange_a and_o forge_a miracle_n of_o this_o and_o that_o saint_n endeavour_v to_o uphold_v one_o lie_n of_o popery_n or_o other_o such_o as_o teach_v man_n tradition_n or_o their_o own_o device_n and_o opinion_n contrary_a to_o god_n word_n such_o as_o wrest_v the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o discourage_v the_o heart_n of_o the_o godly_a and_o strengthen_v the_o hand_n of_o the_o wicked_a make_v their_o text_n speak_v what_o god_n never_o mean_v such_o as_o preach_v god_n word_n but_o so_o mingle_v with_o man_n invention_n as_o they_o preach_v not_o god_n word_n but_o their_o own_o fancy_n thus_o many_o stuff_n their_o sermon_n with_o authority_n of_o man_n as_o of_o heathen_a poet_n philosopher_n historian_n and_o that_o in_o strange_a tongue_n which_o though_o turn_v into_o english_a yet_o what_o a_o loss_n of_o time_n what_o a_o break_n of_o the_o people_n attention_n must_v there_o needs_o be_v hereby_o what_o thrust_v upon_o people_n man_n authority_n use_v indeed_o may_v be_v make_v of_o those_o in_o private_a and_o humanity_n serve_v as_o well_o as_o a_o handmaid_n to_o divinity_n but_o its_o god_n word_n only_o which_o can_v establish_v the_o conscience_n if_o we_o use_v they_o public_o the_o same_o must_v be_v do_v spare_o to_o special_a purpose_n on_o some_o special_a occasion_n as_o when_o we_o have_v to_o do_v with_o atheist_n etc._n etc._n and_o not_o to_o the_o common_a people_n 2._o this_o may_v instruct_v people_n 2._o that_o they_o hear_v nothing_o at_o least_o receive_v nothing_o but_o the_o word_n of_o god_n 17._o my_o sheep_n hear_v my_o voice_n say_v our_o saviour_n 21._o and_o a_o stranger_n voice_n they_o will_v not_o hear_v 1._o therefore_o they_o must_v be_v able_a to_o try_v what_o they_o hear_v we_o must_v not_o be_v like_o child_n carry_v about_o with_o every_o wind_n of_o doctrine_n solomon_n count_v it_o the_o property_n of_o a_o fool_n to_o believe_v every_o thing_n if_o we_o shall_v in_o stead_n of_o be_v feed_v we_o may_v be_v poison_v 11._o we_o must_v of_o the_o scripture_n and_o find_v fault_n with_o man_n preach_n will_v we_o have_v the_o people_n eye_n out_o true_o the_o papist_n can_v abide_v it_o in_o the_o people_n but_o tell_v they_o they_o must_v believe_v as_o their_o minister_n believe_v etc._n etc._n this_o be_v as_o bad_a a_o sign_n in_o they_o as_o may_v be_v but_o alas_o we_o have_v cause_n to_o complain_v of_o people_n ignorance_n it_o be_v even_o just_a with_o god_n to_o let_v they_o fall_v into_o the_o hand_n of_o deceiver_n as_o have_v get_v no_o knowledge_n all_o this_o while_n minister_n must_v preach_v as_o it_o become_v the_o word_n of_o god_n god_n even_o with_o all_o reverence_n and_o authority_n with_o all_o courage_n and_o boldness_n yea_o so_o as_o that_o they_o declare_v by_o their_o life_n that_o they_o believe_v it_o to_o be_v god_n word_n even_o by_o be_v first_o in_o the_o practice_n thereof_o and_o obedience_n thereto_o 1._o this_o serve_v to_o reprove_v divers_a 1_o as_o namely_o those_o that_o mingle_v trick_n and_o conceit_n to_o tickle_v the_o ear_n and_o be_v all_o in_o their_o inkhorn_n term_n rhyme_v and_o run_v on_o the_o letter_n etc._n etc._n together_o with_o those_o that_o have_v itch_a ear_n and_o delight_n in_o such_o thing_n it_o be_v a_o sign_n of_o a_o sickly_a ill_n dispose_v stomach_n to_o who_o the_o wholesome_a food_n of_o the_o word_n be_v not_o sweet_a except_o it_o have_v some_o such_o strumpet_o sauce_n those_o that_o through_o sear_n keep_v back_o god_n counsel_n not_o reveal_v his_o whole_a will_n those_o that_o live_v daily_o in_o
god_n be_v not_o almighty_a or_o have_v make_v no_o promise_n or_o at_o least_o be_v not_o faithful_a o_o let_v we_o rebuke_v our_o unbelief_n and_o gather_v up_o ourselves_o and_o god_n promise_n and_o example_n of_o his_o goodness_n to_o he_o and_o rest_n upon_o they_o as_o on_o a_o unmoveable_a foundation_n in_o well-doing_n god_n while_n we_o continue_v in_o a_o good_a course_n without_o turn_v out_o of_o the_o way_n we_o may_v comfortable_o commend_v ourselves_o to_o god_n but_o not_o otherwise_o if_o we_o falter_v and_o shift_v for_o ourselves_o and_o put_v our_o our_o hand_n to_o unlawful_a mean_n than_o god_n take_v no_o charge_n of_o we_o then_o have_v we_o cut_v off_o ourselves_o from_o all_o hope_n and_o comfortable_a commend_v ourselves_o to_o he_o with_o what_o face_n can_v we_o so_o do_v and_o what_o promise_n have_v we_o when_o we_o have_v break_v our_o faithfulness_n 1._o therefore_o be_v we_o persuade_v 1_o that_o our_o great_a comfort_n in_o our_o trouble_n must_v be_v to_o stick_v close_o to_o god_n and_o so_o long_a god_n have_v tie_v himself_o to_o we_o but_o if_o we_o shall_v do_v otherwise_o we_o defeat_v ourselves_o of_o this_o therefore_o in_o what_o danger_n soever_o we_o be_v let_v we_o never_o put_v out_o our_o hand_n to_o unlawful_a mean_n as_o to_o run_v to_o wizard_n in_o poverty_n to_o steal_v in_o any_o danger_n to_o forfeit_v a_o good_a conscience_n our_o comfort_n be_v then_o go_v and_o god_n promise_n belong_v no_o further_o to_o we_o at_o least_o till_o we_o humble_v ourselves_o and_o be_v reconcile_v upon_o our_o be_v not_o redeem_v wash_v it_o have_v not_o use_v to_o serve_v he_o no_o such_o unclean_a soul_n ever_o come_v or_o shall_v come_v to_o heaven_n no_o they_o go_v to_o he_o who_o they_o have_v serve_v to_o thy_o keep_n this_o soul_n god_n will_v most_o ready_o take_v it_o be_v more_o his_o then_o thou_o he_o love_v it_o well_o but_o for_o a_o wicked_a man_n either_o he_o can_v have_v the_o face_n to_o commend_v his_o soul_n to_o god_n as_o wherewith_o he_o have_v at_o no_o time_n serve_v he_o but_o the_o devil_n his_o enemy_n or_o if_o he_o be_v so_o impudent_a god_n will_v take_v no_o and_o pride_n seek_v to_o prevent_v these_o in_o all_o minister_n by_o exhort_v they_o to_o the_o diligent_a and_o faithful_a performance_n of_o their_o duty_n belong_v to_o they_o namely_o 1._o to_o feed_v the_o flock_n of_o god_n that_o be_v to_o preach_v the_o wholesome_a word_n of_o god_n diligent_o to_o they_o 2._o to_o take_v the_o oversight_n thereof_o that_o be_v to_o have_v a_o special_a care_n of_o they_o and_o regard_n of_o all_o their_o life_n and_o behaviour_n apply_v themselves_o to_o they_o according_o 3._o to_o be_v example_n to_o they_o of_o pure_a humble_a and_o godly_a conversation_n nor_o do_v he_o only_o exhort_v to_o the_o do_v of_o these_o but_o to_o the_o right_a manner_n of_o perform_v the_o same_o they_o must_v be_v do_v 1._o not_o by_o constraint_n that_o be_v out_o of_o fear_n of_o god_n wrath_n or_o force_v of_o man_n law_n but_o willing_o 2._o not_o for_o filthy_a lucre_n but_o of_o a_o ready_a and_o free_a mind_n seek_v god_n glory_n and_o the_o people_n salvation_n 3._o not_o be_v lordly_a or_o haughty_a in_o their_o carriage_n but_o example_n of_o humility_n and_o godliness_n the_o reason_n whereby_o he_o urge_v the_o same_o be_v diverse_a the_o 1._o take_v from_o his_o own_o person_n verse_n 1._o where_o be_v three_o motive_n to_o persuade_v they_o to_o obey_v his_o counsel_n even_o for_o that_o he_o be_v a_o minister_n as_o they_o be_v a_o witness_n of_o the_o suffering_n of_o christ_n and_o a_o partaker_n of_o the_o glory_n to_o come_v in_o heaven_n the_o 2._o for_o that_o the_o people_n be_v god_n flock_n and_o his_o heritage_n the_o 3._o for_o that_o they_o do_v depend_v on_o they_o for_o instruction_n and_o mean_n of_o salvation_n the_o 4._o for_o that_o hereupon_o they_o shall_v receive_v a_o crown_n of_o glory_n that_o fade_v not_o away_o speak_v we_o first_o of_o those_o duty_n in_o general_a then_o in_o particular_a in_o general_n minister_n be_v here_o instruct_v in_o their_o duty_n as_o people_n elsewhere_o note_v 1._o that_o the_o scripture_n be_v not_o partial_a duty_n bind_v some_o to_o duty_n and_o leave_v other_o at_o liberty_n but_o indifferent_o teach_v all_o yea_o the_o great_a place_n that_o any_o be_v in_o the_o more_o duty_n it_o require_v every_o honour_n carry_v a_o burden_n of_o duty_n and_o the_o more_o need_n have_v such_o to_o do_v their_o duty_n for_o the_o example_n of_o other_o above_o all_o other_o minister_n have_v most_o need_v both_o to_o be_v instruct_v in_o they_o and_o also_o to_o perform_v the_o same_o for_o on_o they_o depend_v the_o well-doing_n of_o the_o people_n both_o in_o their_o general_n and_o special_a calling_n for_o how_o shall_v the_o people_n have_v these_o thing_n if_o they_o receive_v they_o not_o from_o the_o minister_n of_o god_n put_v apart_o for_o that_o end_n how_o shall_v they_o else_o be_v either_o good_a christian_n or_o good_a magistrate_n simile_n husband_n householder_n etc._n etc._n if_o the_o great_a wheel_n of_o the_o clock_n that_o shall_v turn_v all_o the_o rest_n do_v stand_v still_o so_o also_o must_v all_o the_o rest_n 1._o when_o people_n be_v inform_v of_o their_o duty_n 1_o and_o among_o other_o of_o their_o duty_n towards_o their_o minister_n as_o of_o love_n honour_n reverence_n obedience_n maintenance_n etc._n etc._n they_o must_v yield_v thereto_o not_o think_v much_o hereof_o for_o god_n have_v lay_v as_o great_a a_o burden_n on_o their_o minister_n which_o they_o be_v charge_v with_o yea_o they_o must_v be_v thankful_a to_o god_n that_o have_v have_v such_o a_o special_a care_n of_o their_o soul_n as_o so_o weighty_o to_o charge_v minister_n therewith_o as_o it_o be_v no_o small_a comfort_n to_o the_o poor_a that_o god_n have_v take_v such_o order_n for_o they_o by_o so_o many_o commandment_n so_o many_o promise_n also_o and_o threat_n to_o the_o rich_a people_n also_o ought_v in_o any_o wise_a to_o be_v careful_a of_o their_o own_o soul_n and_o join_v with_o the_o lord_n in_o care_n who_o be_v so_o careful_a of_o they_o heavy_n
and_o consider_v well_o and_o tarry_v till_o they_o have_v a_o calling_n and_o let_v they_o not_o intend_v to_o live_v at_o ease_n to_o follow_v their_o pleasure_n to_o gather_v riches_n etc._n etc._n but_o let_v they_o make_v their_o reckon_n to_o prove_v laborer_n they_o soldier_n watchmen_z etc._n etc._n else_o no_o come_n here_o thus_o in_o general_n the_o elder_n which_o be_v among_o you_o i_o exhort_v etc._n etc._n this_o verse_n contain_v the_o first_o reason_n of_o the_o follow_a exhortation_n which_o be_v take_v from_o his_o own_o person_n be_v one_o every_o way_n fit_a to_o exhort_v they_o namely_o 1._o a_o elder_a and_o minister_n as_o well_o as_o they_o for_o the_o name_n elder_a be_v of_o dignity_n and_o office_n here_o and_o not_o of_o age_n who_o therefore_o know_v what_o belong_v to_o his_o place_n and_o do_v what_o he_o require_v of_o they_o to_o do_v 2._o a_o witness_n of_o christ_n suffering_n and_o so_o well_o acquaint_v with_o his_o mind_n 3._o a_o partaker_n of_o thing_n not_o so_o apparent_a people_n must_v not_o be_v ready_a to_o censure_v 32._o much_o less_o think_v to_o teach_v their_o minister_n for_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o prophet_n be_v subject_a to_o the_o prophet_n this_o rebuke_v the_o too_o much_o rashness_n and_o pride_n of_o some_o this_o way_n use._n ready_a to_o control_v every_o course_n of_o a_o minister_n that_o be_v not_o please_v to_o they_o 4._o yea_o their_o manner_n of_o teach_v profane_o call_v it_o rail_v and_o that_o they_o shall_v have_v speak_v thus_o and_o thus_o when_o such_o dislike_n any_o thing_n in_o a_o minister_n it_o be_v their_o wisdom_n to_o ask_v the_o judgement_n of_o some_o godly_a minister_n before_o they_o censure_v or_o give_v judgement_n against_o he_o 2._o in_o that_o he_o require_v succession_n have_v it_o be_v so_o there_o have_v be_v no_o fit_a time_n wherein_o to_o have_v show_v it_o than_o this_o howsoever_o what_o have_v it_o be_v to_o the_o pope_n who_o have_v woeful_o
