upon_o they_o by_o we_o as_o their_o principle_n or_o faith_n which_o be_v the_o chief_a art_n he_o use_v in_o draw_v up_o these_o misrepresentation_n xv._n of_o tradition_n we_o charge_v they_o with_o make_v some_o unwritten_a tradition_n of_o equal_a authority_n with_o the_o scripture_n and_o believe_v they_o with_o a_o divine_a faith_n this_o we_o say_v derogate_v from_o the_o perfection_n of_o the_o scripture_n or_o the_o write_a word_n of_o god_n for_o if_o our_o rule_n be_v partly_o the_o write_v partly_o the_o unwritten_a word_n then_o the_o scripture_n or_o write_v word_n be_v but_o part_n of_o the_o rule_n and_o part_n of_o a_o rule_n can_v be_v a_o whole_a and_o perfect_a rule_n and_o we_o say_v that_o these_o unwritten_a tradition_n be_v but_o humane_a ordination_n and_o tradition_n of_o man_n but_o we_o do_v not_o say_v a_o papist_n believe_v they_o to_o be_v humane_a but_o divine_a though_o unwritten_a tradition_n and_o therefore_o though_o we_o affirm_v that_o they_o give_v equal_a authority_n to_o such_o tradition_n as_o be_v in_o truth_n no_o better_o than_o humane_a ordination_n as_o to_o the_o scripture_n themselves_o yet_o we_o do_v not_o say_v that_o they_o admit_v what_o they_o believe_v to_o be_v only_o humane_a tradition_n to_o supply_v the_o defect_n of_o scripture_n allow_v equal_a authority_n to_o they_o as_o to_o the_o scripture_n themselves_o which_o be_v the_o only_a misrepresentation_n in_o this_o character_n all_o the_o rest_n be_v own_v by_o the_o representer_n himself_o who_o then_o have_v very_o little_a cause_n to_o complain_v of_o misrepresent_v xvi_o of_o council_n the_o difference_n between_o the_o misrepresenter_n and_o representer_n in_o this_o article_n be_v no_o more_o but_o this_o that_o the_o papist_n misrepresent_v be_v say_v to_o receive_v new_a addition_n to_o his_o creed_n from_o the_o definition_n and_o authority_n of_o general_n council_n and_o to_o embrace_v they_o with_o a_o divine_a faith_n the_o papist_n represent_v own_v the_o authority_n of_o general_n council_n as_o well_o as_o the_o other_o and_o receive_v all_o their_o definition_n and_o believe_v they_o as_o firm_o but_o though_o they_o define_v such_o doctrine_n for_o article_n of_o faith_n as_o be_v never_o hear_v of_o in_o the_o christian_a church_n and_o lest_o be_v never_o put_v into_o any_o christian_a creed_n before_o yet_o he_o will_v not_o believe_v they_o to_o be_v addition_n to_o his_o faith_n or_o to_o what_o be_v teach_v by_o christ_n and_o his_o apostle_n but_o pope_n pius_n the_o 4_o the_o his_o creed_n must_v be_v the_o faith_n of_o the_o church_n from_o the_o apostle_n day_n now_o here_o i_o fancy_v our_o author_n mistake_v his_o side_n for_o the_o papist_n represent_v have_v much_o the_o worse_a character_n that_o he_o be_v so_o void_a of_o all_o sense_n that_o he_o can_v tell_v which_o be_v most_o twelve_o or_o four_o and_o twenty_o article_n in_o a_o creed_n this_o be_v a_o hard_a case_n that_o man_n must_v believe_v all_o the_o definition_n of_o their_o council_n but_o though_o they_o see_v their_o creed_n increase_v every_o day_n must_v never_o own_o that_o their_o faith_n receive_v any_o addition_n however_o i_o think_v he_o have_v no_o reason_n here_o to_o complain_v of_o misrepresent_v since_o he_o own_v all_o that_o any_o protestant_a charge_n he_o with_o such_o a_o implicit_a faith_n in_o general_a council_n as_o receive_v all_o their_o definition_n and_o rather_o than_o fail_v in_o defiance_n of_o sense_n and_o history_n will_v believe_v that_o to_o be_v the_o old_a faith_n which_o be_v never_o define_v till_o yesterday_o xvii_o of_o infallibility_n in_o the_o church_n the_o misrepresenter_n say_v a_o papist_n believe_v that_o the_o pastor_n and_o prelate_n of_o his_o church_n be_v infallible_a which_o if_o it_o be_v understand_v of_o every_o particular_a pastor_n and_o prelate_n no_o protestant_n ever_o charge_v they_o with_o and_o therefore_o the_o representer_n may_v very_o safe_o deny_v it_o and_o this_o be_v all_o the_o difference_n between_o they_o except_o it_o be_v this_o that_o what_o the_o misrepresenter_n bare_o affirm_v the_o representer_n endeavour_v to_o prove_v viz._n the_o infallibility_n of_o the_o church_n at_o least_o as_o assemble_v in_o general_a council_n and_o yet_o this_o must_v be_v call_v misrepresent_v too_o a_o word_n which_o i_o suppose_v must_v have_v some_o secret_a charm_n in_o it_o to_o convert_v heretic_n xviii_o of_o the_o pope_n here_o the_o misrepresenter_n be_v very_o rhetorical_a and_o facetious_a and_o we_o may_v give_v he_o leave_v to_o be_v a_o little_a pleasant_a with_o his_o own_o universal_a pastor_n he_o say_v the_o papist_n believe_v the_o pope_n to_o be_v his_o great_a god_n how_o great_a i_o can_v tell_v but_o some_o flatterer_n of_o the_o papal_a greatness_n have_v give_v the_o title_n of_o god_n to_o the_o pope_n and_o possible_o some_o protestant_n have_v repeat_v the_o same_o after_o they_o but_o never_o charge_v the_o papist_n with_o believe_v it_o much_o less_o do_v they_o charge_v they_o with_o deny_v christ_n to_o be_v the_o head_n of_o the_o church_n or_o with_o say_v that_o the_o pope_n have_v take_v his_o place_n but_o we_o do_v charge_v they_o with_o make_v the_o pope_n the_o universal_a pastor_n and_o head_n of_o the_o church_n under_o christ_n and_o this_o i_o hope_v be_v no_o misrepresent_v for_o it_o be_v assert_v and_o prove_v after_o this_o fashion_n by_o the_o representer_n but_o why_o be_v the_o pope_n personal_a infallibility_n put_v into_o the_o character_n of_o a_o papist_n misrepresent_v why_o not_o as_o well_o the_o infallibility_n of_o general_n council_n since_o he_o grant_v some_o papist_n do_v believe_v the_o pope_n infallibility_n and_o such_o papist_n be_v not_o misrepresent_v by_o charge_v they_o with_o it_o and_o there_o be_v other_o who_o do_v not_o believe_v the_o council_n infallibility_n without_o the_o pope_n which_o therefore_o can_v be_v a_o inherent_a infallibility_n in_o they_o the_o truth_n be_v the_o infallibility_n of_o the_o church_n be_v the_o faith_n of_o a_o papist_n but_o in_o who_o this_o infallibility_n be_v seat_v whether_o in_o the_o diffusive_a representative_a or_o virtual_a church_n in_o pope_n or_o council_n or_o the_o whole_a body_n of_o christian_n be_v not_o agree_v among_o they_o but_o neither_o of_o these_o be_v misrepresentation_n of_o a_o papist_n unless_o you_o tell_v what_o particular_a sort_n of_o papist_n you_o represent_v and_o then_o i_o be_o sure_a you_o misrepresent_v a_o jesuit_n if_o you_o make_v he_o deny_v the_o pope_n infallibility_n xix_o of_o dispensation_n here_o i_o confess_v the_o misrepresenter_n and_o representer_n do_v flat_o contradict_v each_o other_o and_o i_o be_o hearty_o glad_a to_o hear_v the_o representer_n so_o full_o disow_v those_o principle_n which_o be_v destructive_a to_o all_o religion_n as_o well_o as_o to_o humane_a society_n and_o shall_v be_v more_o glad_a still_o have_v there_o be_v never_o any_o foundation_n for_o what_o he_o call_v the_o misrepresentation_n however_o this_o he_o do_v very_o ill_a in_o to_o charge_v protestant_n with_o this_o misrepresentation_n of_o a_o papist_n for_o i_o know_v no_o protestant_n that_o charge_v these_o principle_n upon_o papist_n in_o general_a but_o i_o hope_v it_o be_v no_o misrepresentation_n to_o charge_v those_o man_n with_o such_o principle_n who_o charge_v themselves_o with_o they_o and_o i_o suppose_v our_o author_n will_v not_o say_v that_o these_o principle_n be_v never_o teach_v or_o defend_v by_o any_o papist_n whenever_o he_o be_v hardy_a enough_o to_o say_v this_o i_o will_v direct_v he_o to_o such_o popish_a author_n as_o will_v satisfy_v he_o about_o it_o xx._n of_o the_o depose_v power_n here_o the_o dispute_n between_o the_o misrepresenter_n and_o representer_n be_v only_o this_o whether_o the_o depose_v power_n be_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n for_o it_o be_v grant_v on_o all_o hand_n that_o it_o be_v or_o have_v be_v the_o doctrine_n and_o practice_n of_o many_o pope_n divine_n and_o canonist_n but_o that_o it_o have_v be_v condemn_v by_o other_o divine_n and_o some_o famous_a university_n though_o i_o do_v not_o hear_v that_o it_o be_v ever_o condemn_v by_o any_o pope_n but_o what_o do_v he_o think_v of_o this_o be_v decree_v by_o general_a council_n do_v not_o this_o make_v it_o the_o doctrine_n of_o their_o church_n this_o he_o say_v nothing_o to_o here_o but_o we_o shall_v meet_v with_o it_o by_o and_o by_o in_o his_o
attrition_n which_o be_v but_o a_o imperfect_a degree_n of_o sorrow_n for_o fear_n of_o hell_n and_o can_v produce_v only_o some_o faint_a and_o sudden_a thought_n of_o amendment_n do_v qualify_v sinner_n for_o absolution_n and_o we_o say_v whatever_o the_o doctrine_n of_o their_o church_n teach_v the_o constant_a practice_n of_o absolve_v all_o that_o confess_v without_o any_o apparent_a sign_n of_o repentance_n and_o purpose_n of_o a_o new_a life_n and_o that_o after_o many_o and_o repeat_v relapse_n be_v apt_a to_o teach_v man_n to_o place_v their_o confidence_n in_o the_o priest_n absolution_n without_o any_o serious_a intention_n to_o forsake_v their_o wickedness_n viii_o of_o indulgence_n we_o charge_v the_o church_n of_o rome_n with_o teach_v the_o pope_n power_n to_o grant_v indulgence_n not_o to_o commit_v sin_n for_o the_o future_a but_o for_o the_o pardon_n of_o those_o sin_n which_o be_v commit_v that_o be_v for_o the_o remit_v those_o temporal_a punishment_n which_o be_v due_a to_o sin_n in_o purgatory_n the_o absolution_n of_o the_o priest_n remit_v the_o eternal_a punishment_n of_o sin_n and_o keep_v man_n out_o of_o hell_n but_o still_o the_o temporal_a punishment_n in_o purgatory_n remain_v due_a and_o this_o must_v be_v take_v off_o either_o by_o humane_a satisfaction_n and_o penance_n of_o which_o present_o or_o by_o the_o pope_n grant_v so_o many_o thousand_o year_n pardon_v of_o canonical_a penance_n if_o they_o concern_v this_o life_n as_o some_o indulgence_n contain_v when_o few_o man_n live_v a_o hundred_o year_n in_o this_o world_n and_o then_o have_v no_o need_n of_o all_o the_o rest_n we_o say_v the_o pope_n have_v and_o do_v to_o this_o day_n sell_v these_o indulgence_n at_o different_a rate_n according_a to_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o crime_n and_o man_n who_o have_v money_n need_v not_o fear_v the_o purgatory_n fire_n and_o man_n who_o have_v none_o must_v be_v content_v to_o endure_v they_o this_o we_o grant_v with_o the_o representer_n to_o be_v a_o great_a abuse_n but_o it_o be_v a_o abuse_n of_o their_o pope_n and_o hardly_o separable_a from_o the_o doctrine_n and_o practice_n of_o indulgence_n ix_o of_o satisfaction_n we_o charge_v they_o with_o make_v human_a penance_n necessary_a to_o satisfy_v for_o the_o temporal_a punishment_n which_o be_v due_a to_o sin_n in_o purgatory_n when_o the_o eternal_a punishment_n be_v pardon_v for_o the_o merit_n and_o satisfaction_n of_o christ_n which_o we_o say_v be_v injurious_a to_o the_o satisfaction_n of_o christ_n for_o all_o man_n must_v grant_v that_o christ_n have_v be_v a_o more_o perfect_a saviour_n have_v he_o by_o his_o death_n and_o passion_n deliver_v we_o from_o the_o temporal_a punishment_n of_o sin_n in_o purgatory_n as_o well_o as_o from_o the_o eternal_a pain_n of_o hell_n yet_o we_o do_v not_o say_v that_o they_o believe_v very_o injurious_o of_o the_o passion_n of_o christ_n that_o his_o suffering_n and_o death_n be_v not_o sufficient_o satisfactory_a for_o our_o sin_n and_o therefore_o think_v it_o necessary_a to_o make_v satisfaction_n for_o themselves_o but_o that_o they_o believe_v as_o their_o church_n teach_v they_o that_o they_o must_v satisfy_v themselves_o for_o the_o temporal_a punishment_n of_o their_o sin_n and_o this_o be_v injurious_a to_o the_o satisfaction_n of_o christ._n we_o do_v not_o charge_v they_o with_o evacuate_a christ_n passion_n by_o rely_v on_o their_o own_o penitential_a work_n but_o that_o they_o rely_v on_o christ_n to_o satisfy_v for_o the_o eternal_a punishment_n of_o sin_n and_o on_o their_o own_o satisfaction_n for_o the_o temporal_a punishment_n which_o ascribe_v indeed_o the_o better_a half_n but_o not_o the_o whole_a to_o christ_n and_o all_o this_o the_o representer_n own_v x._o of_o read_v the_o holy_a scripture_n we_o only_o charge_v they_o with_o deny_v the_o people_n the_o use_n of_o the_o bible_n in_o the_o vulgar_a tongue_n as_o every_o body_n know_v they_o do_v and_o as_o the_o representer_n own_v and_o defend_v it_o and_o to_o justify_v this_o practice_n we_o say_v many_o of_o their_o divine_n have_v charge_v the_o scripture_n with_o be_v a_o very_a dark_a obscure_a unintelligible_a book_n and_o that_o it_o be_v of_o very_o dangerous_a consequence_n to_o grant_v a_o liberty_n to_o the_o people_n to_o read_v it_o and_o this_o we_o think_v be_v not_o much_o for_o the_o credit_n and_o reputation_n of_o the_o holy_a scripture_n but_o we_o do_v not_o as_o the_o misrepresenter_n say_v charge_v the_o papist_n with_o believe_v it_o part_n of_o his_o duty_n to_o think_v mean_o of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o to_o speak_v irreverent_o of_o the_o scripture_n whether_o deny_v the_o people_n the_o use_n of_o the_o bible_n in_o a_o language_n they_o understand_v be_v a_o argument_n of_o their_o respect_n or_o disrespect_n to_o the_o scripture_n let_v any_o man_n judge_n but_o for_o whatever_o reason_n they_o do_v it_o the_o effect_n be_v plain_a that_o it_o keep_v people_n in_o great_a ignorance_n and_o as_o we_o fear_v occasion_n the_o eternal_a damnation_n of_o many_o soul_n though_o we_o do_v not_o say_v as_o the_o misrepresenter_n do_v that_o they_o do_v it_o with_o this_o design_n that_o man_n may_v be_v preserve_v in_o ignorance_n and_o damn_v eternal_o but_o they_o know_v their_o own_o design_n best_o xi_o of_o apocryphal_a book_n here_o can_v be_v no_o pretence_n of_o misrepresent_v unless_o it_o be_v in_o the_o first_o clause_n which_o he_o usual_o take_v care_n shall_v contain_v some_o misrepresentation_n that_o he_o believe_v it_o lawful_a to_o make_v what_o addition_n to_o scripture_n his_o party_n think_v good_a for_o as_o for_o their_o receive_v such_o apocryphal_a book_n as_o tobit_n judeth_n ecclesiastious_a wisdom_n and_o the_o maccabee_n into_o the_o canon_n of_o scripture_n which_o be_v all_o we_o charge_v they_o with_o the_o representer_n own_v and_o defend_v it_o this_o indeed_o we_o think_v to_o be_v make_v addition_n to_o the_o scripture_n but_o we_o do_v charge_v they_o with_o believe_v that_o they_o may_v make_v what_o addition_n to_o the_o scripture_n they_o please_v for_o we_o believe_v they_o have_v so_o much_o wit_n as_o to_o know_v it_o safe_a to_o do_v it_o than_o to_o say_v it_o may_v be_v do_v xii_o of_o the_o vulgar_a edition_n of_o the_o bible_n all_z that_o we_o charge_v they_o with_o here_o be_v that_o they_o make_v the_o vulgar_a latin_a edition_n of_o the_o bible_n so_o authentic_a as_o to_o allow_v of_o any_o appeal_v to_o the_o they_o leave_v to_o speak_v some_o blunt_a and_o bold_a truth_n of_o themselves_o xiii_o of_o the_o scripture_n as_o the_o rule_n of_o faith_n fourteen_o of_o the_o interpretation_n of_o scripture_n we_o do_v not_o charge_v they_o with_o deny_v in_o express_a word_n the_o authority_n of_o the_o scripture_n to_o be_v a_o rule_n but_o with_o say_v that_o which_o be_v equivalent_a to_o it_o that_o faith_n and_o interpretation_n of_o the_o church_n not_o the_o scripture_n my_o immediate_a rule_n but_o why_o do_v he_o now_o complain_v of_o misrepresentation_n when_o the_o representer_n own_v and_o justify_v every_o particular_a of_o it_o except_o it_o be_v those_o goodly_a introduction_n that_o he_o believe_v it_o lawful_a nay_o that_o it_o be_v his_o obligation_n to_o undervalue_v the_o scripture_n and_o take_v from_o
memory_n and_o a_o needless_a explication_n of_o the_o first_o but_o whatever_o may_v be_v say_v for_o or_o against_o it_o if_o the_o charge_n be_v true_a why_o be_v this_o call_v misrepresent_v xxvi_o of_o mental_a reservation_n the_o representer_n himself_o grant_v all_o that_o we_o charge_v they_o with_o not_o that_o this_o doctrine_n be_v ever_o define_v by_o any_o general_a council_n or_o that_o it_o be_v universal_o receive_v and_o practise_v by_o all_o of_o that_o communion_n but_o that_o it_o have_v be_v teach_v and_o defend_v by_o great_a number_n of_o their_o divine_n and_o casuist_n not_o to_o take_v notice_n of_o any_o great_a authority_n now_o and_o practise_v as_o occasion_v serve_v by_o themselves_o and_o their_o disciple_n to_o charge_v all_o papist_n in_o general_a with_o this_o will_v indeed_o be_v a_o misrepresentation_n but_o i_o hope_v it_o be_v none_o to_o charge_v those_o who_o be_v real_o guilty_a xxvii_o of_o a_o deathbed_n repentance_n we_o do_v not_o think_v so_o ill_o of_o any_o sect_n or_o profession_n of_o christian_n but_o that_o they_o will_v all_o grant_v that_o man_n ought_v to_o live_v as_o well_o as_o die_v in_o the_o faith_n and_o fear_n and_o obedience_n of_o god_n nor_o do_v we_o ever_o charge_v the_o church_n of_o rome_n with_o teach_v otherwise_o but_o then_o we_o say_v that_o man_n may_v teach_v such_o doctrine_n as_o may_v give_v great_a encouragement_n to_o sinner_n to_o take_v their_o fill_n of_o sensual_a lust_n and_o to_o put_v off_o the_o thought_n of_o repentance_n to_o a_o deathbed_n and_o this_o indeed_o we_o think_v the_o church_n of_o rome_n have_v do_v but_o do_v not_o charge_v she_o with_o teach_v her_o child_n to_o make_v such_o a_o ill_a use_n of_o these_o doctrine_n or_o with_o encourage_v they_o to_o live_v wicked_o in_o their_o health_n and_o to_o repent_v when_o they_o be_v sick_a this_o be_v no_o part_n of_o the_o character_n which_o we_o give_v of_o a-papist_n but_o we_o alleadg_n it_o only_o to_o convince_v man_n how_o dangerous_a the_o communion_n of_o such_o a_o church_n be_v which_o have_v find_v out_o so_o many_o easy_a way_n to_o keep_v good_a catholic_n out_o of_o hell_n as_o without_o she_o teach_v any_o such_o consequence_n be_v very_o apt_a to_o incline_v man_n who_o believe_v they_o to_o take_v great_a liberty_n than_o be_v consistent_a with_o the_o safety_n of_o their_o soul_n xxviii_o of_o fast_v we_o do_v not_o blame_v the_o church_n of_o rome_n for_o enjoin_v fast_v which_o be_v a_o very_a useful_a duty_n when_o it_o serve_v the_o true_a end_n and_o purpose_n of_o religion_n nor_o do_v we_o deny_v that_o a_o papist_n may_v fast_v very_o devout_o and_o religious_o but_o we_o say_v the_o common_a practice_n of_o fast_v among_o papist_n be_v far_o enough_o from_o be_v religious_a a_o ecclesiastical_a fast_o be_v very_o reconcilable_a with_o the_o great_a excess_n and_o though_o this_o be_v the_o fault_n of_o the_o man_n and_o we_o charge_v none_o with_o it_o but_o those_o who_o be_v guilty_a which_o i_o suppose_v be_v not_o misrepresent_v yet_o their_o church_n have_v give_v occasion_n to_o it_o by_o make_v fast_v to_o signify_v eat_v so_o they_o do_v but_o abstain_v from_o all_o meat_n forbid_v by_o the_o church_n and_o their_o casuist_n have_v state_v this_o matter_n so_o loose_o that_o no_o man_n who_o have_v not_o a_o antipathy_n to_o the_o best_a fish_n and_o most_o delicious_a wine_n and_o sweetmeat_n need_v do_v any_o great_a penance_n in_o fast_v and_o it_o be_v hard_o we_o can_v be_v allow_v
