that_o god_n will_v judge_v the_o world_n in_o righteousness_n by_o that_o man_n who_o be_v have_v ordain_v that_o be_v by_o christ_n jesus_n prove_v that_o righteousness_n signify_v a_o equal_a kind_a and_o merciful_a justice_n for_o christ_n be_v a_o mediatory_a king_n and_o a_o mediatory_a judge_n he_o judge_v between_o god_n and_o man_n he_o set_v bound_n and_o measure_n to_o justice_n and_o make_v allowance_n for_o the_o folly_n and_o weakness_n of_o human_a nature_n and_o with_o a_o sovereign_a authority_n dispense_v not_o only_o the_o justice_n but_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n never_o hear_v of_o christ_n and_o never_o have_v the_o gospel_n preach_v to_o they_o but_o it_o seem_v to_o look_v very_o favourable_o on_o they_o that_o the_o saviour_n of_o mankind_n the_o merciful_a and_o compassionate_a jesus_n be_v their_o judge_n also_o which_o promise_v all_o the_o mercy_n that_o their_o condition_n be_v capable_a of_o and_o how_o much_o that_o be_v we_o can_v tell_v for_o the_o saviour_n of_o the_o world_n must_v judge_v with_o mercy_n and_o equity_n not_o by_o the_o rule_n of_o severe_a and_o rigorous_a justice_n of_o which_o more_o present_o leave_v then_o the_o heathen_a world_n to_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n which_o be_v over_o all_o his_o work_n it_o more_o concern_v we_o to_o inquire_v by_o what_o rule_n christ_n will_v judge_v we_o who_o have_v have_v the_o gospel_n preach_v to_o we_o now_o in_o general_n st._n paul_n tell_v we_o god_n will_v judge_v the_o secret_n of_o man_n by_o christ_n jesus_n according_a to_o my_o gospel_n 2_o and_o orthodox_n believer_n they_o believe_v in_o god_n who_o justify_v the_o ungodly_a they_o believe_v in_o christ_n and_o trust_v in_o he_o for_o salvation_n and_o there_o be_v no_o condemnation_n to_o those_o who_o be_v in_o christ_n jesus_n 1._o they_o expect_v to_o be_v justify_v by_o faith_n to_o be_v save_v by_o grace_n and_o that_o without_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n and_o what_o have_v the_o law_n then_o to_o do_v to_o condemn_v they_o who_o believe_v in_o christ_n who_o have_v satisfy_v the_o law_n in_o christ_n who_o have_v fulfil_v the_o law_n in_o he_o who_o be_v wash_v from_o their_o sin_n in_o his_o blood_n and_o be_v clothe_v with_o his_o righteousness_n impute_v to_o they_o those_o who_o be_v not_o in_o christ_n must_v indeed_o be_v judge_v by_o their_o work_n but_o all_o true_a believer_n be_v justify_v by_o their_o faith_n and_o save_v by_o grace_n now_o it_o must_v be_v confess_v this_o be_v very_o express_o teach_v in_o scripture_n that_o we_o be_v justify_v by_o faith_n and_o save_v by_o grace_n and_o that_o without_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n by_o the_o deed_n of_o the_o law_n there_o shall_v no_o flesh_n be_v justify_v in_o his_o sight_n but_o now_o the_o righteousness_n of_o god_n without_o the_o law_n be_v manifest_a be_v witness_v by_o the_o law_n and_o the_o prophet_n even_o the_o righteousness_n of_o god_n which_o be_v by_o or_o bad_a that_o christ_n will_v condemn_v all_o wicked_a christian_n whatever_o their_o faith_n be_v not_o every_o one_o that_o say_v unto_o i_o lord_n lord_n shall_v enter_v into_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n but_o he_o that_o do_v the_o will_n of_o my_o father_n which_o be_v in_o heaven_n many_o will_v say_v to_o i_o in_o that_o day_n lord_n 23._o lord_n have_v we_o not_o prophesy_v in_o body_n whether_o good_a or_o evil_n that_o be_v we_o be_v justify_v by_o faith_n justify_v free_o by_o god_n grace_n through_o the_o redemption_n which_o be_v in_o christ_n jesus_n and_o through_o faith_n in_o his_o blood_n and_o yet_o shall_v be_v condemn_v at_o the_o last_o judgement_n if_o we_o live_v wicked_o this_o be_v a_o matter_n of_o very_o great_a consequence_n to_o be_v plain_o state_v because_o a_o great_a many_o christian_n encourage_v themselves_o in_o sin_n with_o vain_a hope_n and_o eternal_o perish_v by_o a_o presumptuous_a faith_n and_o reliance_n on_o christ._n i._o now_o in_o the_o first_o place_n that_o whatever_o mistake_v or_o misapprehension_n man_n may_v have_v about_o the_o nature_n of_o faith_n and_o justification_n may_v not_o endanger_v their_o soul_n by_o encourage_v they_o in_o sin_n i_o observe_v that_o we_o must_v reconcile_v the_o doctrine_n of_o justification_n by_o faith_n without_o work_n to_o our_o be_v judge_v by_o our_o work_n not_o expound_v away_o the_o doctrine_n of_o our_o be_v judge_v according_a to_o our_o work_n to_o reconcile_v it_o to_o our_o notion_n of_o justification_n by_o faith_n and_o there_o be_v manifest_a reason_n for_o this_o 1._o because_o it_o be_v as_o express_o teach_v in_o scripture_n that_o we_o shall_v be_v judge_v by_o our_o work_n as_o it_o be_v that_o we_o be_v justify_v by_o faith_n and_o therefore_o we_o must_v not_o oppose_v our_o justification_n by_o faith_n to_o our_o be_v judge_v by_o our_o work_n for_o that_o be_v not_o to_o expound_v scripture_n but_o to_o confute_v one_o scripture_n doctrine_n by_o another_o to_o prove_v that_o we_o shall_v not_o be_v judge_v by_o our_o work_n though_o the_o scripture_n say_v we_o shall_v because_o the_o scripture_n also_o teach_v that_o we_o be_v justify_v by_o faith_n without_o work_n now_o if_o it_o be_v allowable_a to_o reject_v any_o scripture_n doctrine_n or_o to_o confute_v one_o doctrine_n by_o â—â—other_n we_o may_v with_o as_o good_a reason_n 〈◊〉_d they_o both_o by_o each_o other_o and_o belâ—â—â—â—_n neither_o for_o if_o they_o can_v be_v reconcile_v but_o we_o must_v deny_v one_o our_o be_v judge_v by_o our_o work_n do_v as_o plain_o prove_v that_o we_o be_v not_o justify_v by_o faith_n without_o work_n as_o justification_n by_o faith_n prove_v that_o we_o shall_v not_o be_v judge_v by_o our_o work_n we_o must_v distinguish_v between_o expound_v and_o reconcile_a scripture_n and_o confute_v it_o and_o therefore_o whatever_o we_o believe_v about_o justification_n by_o faith_n we_o must_v still_o confess_v we_o shall_v be_v judge_v by_o our_o work_n for_o 2._o there_o be_v great_a reason_n to_o expound_v justification_n by_o faith_n by_o our_o be_v judge_v by_o work_n because_o when_o we_o be_v tell_v in_o scripture_n that_o god_n will_v render_v to_o we_o according_a to_o our_o deed_n that_o every_o man_n must_v receive_v the_o thing_n do_v in_o his_o body_n according_a to_o what_o he_o have_v do_v whether_o it_o be_v good_a or_o bad_a these_o be_v plain_a proper_a expression_n without_o any_o figure_n or_o metaphor_n in_o they_o and_o therefore_o be_v capable_a of_o no_o other_o sense_n than_o what_o the_o word_n at_o first_o view_n signify_v we_o shall_v receive_v what_o we_o have_v do_v if_o we_o have_v do_v good_a we_o shall_v be_v reward_v if_o we_o have_v do_v evil_a we_o shall_v be_v punish_v good_a man_n shall_v be_v receive_v into_o heaven_n and_o all_o wicked_a man_n even_o wicked_a believer_n as_o well_o as_o wicked_a infidel_n shall_v 〈◊〉_d cast_v into_o hell_n this_o every_o child_n understand_v to_o be_v the_o meaning_n of_o these_o word_n and_o no_o other_o sense_n can_v be_v make_v of_o they_o and_o therefore_o since_o this_o be_v so_o plain_o and_o so_o frequent_o teach_v in_o scripture_n whatever_o we_o believe_v else_o we_o must_v believe_v this_o if_o we_o believe_v the_o scripture_n but_o now_o when_o we_o read_v of_o be_v justify_v by_o faith_n without_o work_n every_o word_n be_v capable_a of_o very_o different_a sense_n and_o we_o know_v be_v expound_v very_o different_o by_o learned_a man_n according_a to_o the_o different_a hypothesis_n they_o intend_v to_o serve_v by_o it_o and_o then_o we_o must_v confess_v it_o be_v not_o so_o certain_a what_o be_v mean_v by_o justification_n by_o faith_n without_o work_n as_o what_o be_v mean_v by_o be_v judge_v according_a to_o our_o work_n at_o least_o so_o much_o must_v be_v allow_v that_o we_o must_v prefer_v that_o sense_n of_o justification_n by_o faith_n which_o agree_v with_o our_o be_v judge_v by_o our_o work_n before_o any_o other_o interpretation_n which_o contradict_v or_o overthrow_v this_o plain_a sense_n of_o a_o future_a judgement_n as_o for_o instance_n some_o by_o justify_v understand_v make_v just_a and_o righteous_a that_o to_o justify_v the_o ungodly_a be_v to_o make_v a_o wicked_a man_n good_a by_o the_o power_n and_o efficacy_n of_o faith_n but_o then_o to_o justify_v the_o ungodly_a without_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n or_o to_o make_v a_o wicked_a man_n good_a without_o good_a work_n do_v not_o find_v very_o well_o and_o therefore_o other_o more_o reasonable_o and_o more_o agreeable_o to_o scripture_n understand_v justify_v in_o a_o forensick_a sense_n for_o absolve_v acquit_v declare_v and_o account_v man_n just_a and_o righteous_a and_o treat_v they_o as_o such_o that_o be_v impute_v righteousness_n to_o they_o though_o in_o a_o strict_a and_o proper_a sense_n they_o be_v not_o inherent_o righteous_a and_o then_o this_o forensick_a justification_n may_v either_o signify_v our_o be_v justify_v at_o baptism_n when_o by_o the_o profession_n of_o our_o faith_n we_o be_v incorporate_v by_o baptism_n into_o christ_n church_n and_o be_v make_v the_o member_n of_o his_o mystical_a body_n and_o have_v all_o our_o sin_n wash_v away_o in_o his_o blood_n and_o come_v pure_a and_o innocent_a out_o of_o the_o laver_n of_o regeneration_n and_o thus_o the_o most_o ungodly_a sinner_n be_v justify_v by_o faith_n in_o baptism_n without_o work_n or_o any_o antecedent_n righteousness_n of_o their_o own_o or_o else_o this_o justification_n may_v be_v extend_v to_o the_o future_a judgement_n that_o at_o the_o last_o day_n of_o account_n we_o shall_v be_v justify_v acquit_v absolve_v reward_v by_o justify_v by_o faith_n without_o work_n and_o that_o we_o shall_v be_v judge_v by_o our_o work_n but_o never_o say_v we_o shall_v be_v judge_v by_o our_o faith_n which_o seem_v to_o make_v a_o great_a difference_n between_o be_v justify_v and_o be_v judge_v for_o if_o we_o be_v justify_v without_o work_n and_o judge_v by_o our_o work_n justify_v by_o faith_n without_o work_n but_o not_o judge_v not_o acquit_v and_o reward_v by_o faith_n without_o work_n to_o be_v justify_v and_o to_o be_v judge_v can_v signify_v the_o same_o
thing_n thus_o when_o we_o be_v say_v to_o be_v justify_v by_o faith_n some_o by_o faith_n understand_v such_o a_o firm_a and_o steadfast_a belief_n of_o the_o whole_a gospel_n of_o all_o that_o concern_v the_o person_n and_o mediation_n of_o christ_n the_o expiation_n of_o his_o blood_n his_o resurrection_n from_o the_o dead_a and_o intercession_n for_o we_o in_o heaven_n his_o law_n his_o promise_n and_o threaten_n as_o renew_v and_o sanctify_v our_o nature_n govern_v our_o life_n conquer_v the_o world_n subdue_v the_o flesh_n to_o the_o spirit_n and_o make_v we_o true_o divine_a and_o godlike_a creature_n the_o son_n of_o god_n not_o mere_o by_o external_a relation_n but_o by_o a_o participation_n of_o his_o nature_n now_o this_o notion_n of_o justify_v faith_n that_o we_o shall_v be_v justify_v by_o a_o live_n work_a faith_n be_v very_o reconcilable_a with_o be_v judge_v by_o our_o work_n for_o if_o we_o can_v be_v justify_v by_o faith_n without_o work_n if_o no_o faith_n can_v justify_v but_o that_o which_o be_v fruitful_a in_o all_o good_a work_n than_o we_o may_v be_v judge_v by_o our_o work_n since_o holiness_n be_v essential_a to_o a_o justify_v faith_n other_o by_o justify_v faith_n understand_v a_o reliance_n and_o recumbency_n on_o christ_n for_o salvation_n a_o receive_n and_o embrace_v christ_n and_o roll_a their_o soul_n on_o he_o as_o they_o be_v please_v to_o express_v it_o which_o when_o take_v out_o of_o metaphor_n can_v signify_v no_o more_o than_o to_o hope_n and_o trust_v in_o christ_n that_o he_o will_v save_v they_o and_o to_o be_v willing_a to_o be_v save_v by_o he_o without_o any_o work_n and_o righteousness_n of_o their_o own_o now_o if_o the_o bare_a act_n of_o rely_v on_o christ_n will_v justify_v and_o save_v man_n i_o can_v see_v how_o such_o believer_n shall_v be_v judge_v by_o their_o work_n though_o infidel_n may_v but_o this_o antinomian_a conceit_n of_o justify_v faith_n be_v not_o so_o plain_a and_o certain_a as_o it_o be_v that_o we_o shall_v be_v judge_v by_o our_o work_n not_o to_o dispute_v the_o point_n now_o these_o man_n may_v be_v mistake_v in_o their_o notion_n of_o justify_v faith_n but_o there_o can_v be_v no_o dispute_n make_v what_o the_o meaning_n be_v of_o be_v judge_v according_a to_o our_o work_n thus_o when_o we_o be_v say_v to_o be_v justify_v by_o faith_n in_o opposition_n to_o justification_n by_o work_n it_o be_v matter_n of_o controversy_n what_o be_v mean_v by_o work_n some_o think_v that_o when_o work_n be_v reject_v as_o contribute_v nothing_o to_o our_o though_o no_o man_n be_v justify_v or_o save_v for_o the_o merit_n of_o his_o work_n yet_o he_o may_v be_v judge_v according_a to_o his_o work_n though_o no_o man_n shall_v be_v save_v by_o the_o our_o be_v judge_v according_a to_o our_o work_n so_o that_o though_o we_o be_v not_o justify_v by_o work_n but_o by_o faith_n as_o st._n paul_n tell_v we_o yet_o we_o must_v be_v judge_v by_o our_o work_n wicked_a man_n shall_v be_v condemn_v for_o their_o wickedness_n and_o none_o but_o good_a man_n shall_v be_v justify_v and_o save_v by_o the_o merit_n of_o christ_n and_o who_o be_v wicked_a and_o who_o be_v righteous_a shall_v at_o the_o last_o day_n be_v judge_v by_o their_o work_n and_o indeed_o this_o be_v plain_o confess_v by_o those_o who_o contend_v most_o zealous_o foâ—_n justification_n by_o faith_n alone_o which_o make_v this_o a_o very_a needless_a and_o impertinent_a controversy_n as_o appear_v from_o their_o way_n of_o reconcile_a st._n paul_n and_o st._n james._n st._n paul_n tell_v we_o we_o be_v justify_v by_o faith_n without_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n st._n james_n tell_v we_o that_o by_o work_n a_o man_n be_v justify_v and_o not_o by_o faith_n only_o 2_o jam._n 14._o to_o reconcile_v these_o two_o great_a apostle_n they_o tell_v we_o that_o the_o man_n be_v justify_v by_o faith_n and_o his_o faith_n be_v justify_v by_o work_n now_o whether_o this_o be_v the_o true_a way_n of_o reconcile_a st._n paul_n and_o st._n james_n i_o shall_v not_o at_o present_a dispute_n but_o it_o grant_v all_o that_o i_o desire_v that_o notwithstanding_o our_o be_v justify_v by_o faith_n we_o shall_v be_v judge_v by_o our_o work_n for_o whether_o a_o man_n or_o his_o faith_n be_v judge_v and_o justify_v by_o work_n i_o think_v be_v the_o same_o thing_n for_o if_o the_o man_n must_v be_v justify_v by_o faith_n and_o his_o faith_n justify_v by_o work_n i_o doubt_v the_o man_n can_v be_v justify_v without_o work_n unless_o he_o can_v be_v justify_v by_o a_o unjustified_a faith_n before_o fâ—ith_n can_v justify_v the_o man_n it_o must_v be_v justify_v itself_o and_o faith_n must_v be_v justify_v by_o work_n and_o what_o this_o differ_v from_o judge_v a_o believer_n by_o his_o work_n i_o can_v tell_v so_o that_o as_o many_o dispute_n as_o there_o be_v about_o justification_n by_o faith_n we_o ought_v firm_o to_o believe_v that_o we_o shall_v be_v judge_v by_o our_o work_n for_o most_o of_o the_o notion_n of_o justification_n by_o faith_n in_o opposition_n to_o our_o justification_n by_o work_n be_v very_o reconcilable_a with_o this_o doctrine_n of_o be_v judge_v by_o our_o work_n and_o those_o that_o be_v not_o be_v not_o so_o plain_a and_o certain_a as_o it_o be_v that_o we_o shall_v be_v judge_v by_o our_o work_n 3._o however_o since_o this_o be_v so_o plain_o express_v in_o scripture_n that_o there_o be_v no_o avoid_v it_o nor_o any_o other_o possible_a sense_n to_o be_v make_v of_o it_o whatever_o our_o notion_n of_o justification_n be_v it_o be_v much_o the_o safe_a way_n to_o believe_v and_o expect_v that_o we_o shall_v be_v judge_v according_a to_o our_o work_n that_o if_o we_o live_v wicked_o we_o shall_v certain_o be_v condemn_v at_o that_o day_n and_o though_o we_o shall_v be_v acquit_v and_o final_o absolve_v by_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n and_o the_o merit_n of_o christ_n yet_o not_o without_o holiness_n not_o without_o good_a work_n not_o without_o partake_v of_o the_o divine_a nature_n and_o be_v conform_v to_o christ_n our_o head_n to_o entertain_v any_o other_o hope_n will_v undo_v we_o for_o ever_o for_o we_o shall_v be_v very_o ill_o prepare_v to_o give_v a_o account_n of_o our_o life_n and_o action_n when_o our_o lord_n come_v to_o call_v we_o to_o a_o account_n if_o we_o can_v possess_v ourselves_o with_o such_o notion_n of_o justification_n as_o deliver_v we_o from_o the_o fear_n of_o judgement_n if_o we_o can_v persuade_v ourselves_o that_o we_o shall_v not_o be_v judge_v according_a to_o our_o work_n but_o by_o the_o merit_n of_o christ_n that_o we_o shall_v not_o receive_v the_o thing_n do_v in_o the_o body_n whether_o good_a or_o evil_n but_o shall_v receive_v the_o purchase_n of_o christ_n obedience_n and_o righteousness_n without_o regard_n to_o our_o own_o these_o be_v the_o dangerous_a conclusion_n which_o some_o man_n draw_v from_o their_o mistake_a notion_n of_o justification_n and_o this_o be_v the_o great_a danger_n of_o such_o mistake_n while_o man_n acknowledge_v the_o grace_n of_o god_n and_o the_o merit_n of_o christ_n in_o the_o justification_n of_o sinner_n and_o believe_v that_o they_o shall_v be_v judge_v according_a to_o their_o work_n whatever_o other_o dispute_n there_o may_v be_v there_o be_v no_o danger_n in_o they_o but_o if_o man_n by_o some_o uncertain_a reason_n can_v persuade_v themselves_o
