in_o david_n tune_n and_o not_o in_o such_o metre_n as_o man_n have_v devise_v sol._n this_o reason_n will_v prove_v as_o well_o that_o we_o shall_v not_o read_v david_n psalm_n for_o may_v not_o a_o man_n as_o well_o say_v why_o shall_v we_o read_v they_o in_o any_o language_n but_o that_o wherein_o they_o be_v write_v and_o so_o farewell_n sing_v and_o read_v psalm_n too_o and_o if_o you_o say_v but_o as_o much_o of_o all_o the_o other_o part_n of_o scripture_n farewell_o all_o preach_n of_o gift_a man_n for_o they_o will_v have_v never_o a_o text_n nor_o bible_n leave_v they_o but_o if_o we_o think_v our_o self_n bind_v to_o read_v the_o psalm_n in_o our_o own_o tongue_n why_o may_v we_o not_o as_o well_o sing_v they_o in_o our_o own_o tune_n if_o you_o say_v there_o be_v a_o necessity_n of_o read_v i_o grant_v it_o and_o say_v there_o be_v a_o necessity_n of_o sing_v they_o also_o there_o be_v as_o express_v precept_n in_o scripture_n for_o the_o one_o as_o for_o the_o other_o when_o any_o man_n shall_v give_v we_o as_o a_o good_a reason_n against_o read_v in_o our_o own_o tongue_n we_o will_v give_v over_o sing_a psalm_n in_o our_o own_o tune_n till_o then_o we_o believe_v there_o be_v the_o like_a necessity_n of_o the_o one_o and_o the_o other_o or_o else_o we_o be_v come_v to_o a_o good_a pass_v indeed_o that_o we_o must_v neither_o sing_v nor_o say_v my_o answer_n then_o be_v in_o a_o word_n this_o that_o there_o be_v a_o necessity_n of_o sing_v as_o well_o as_o of_o read_v we_o may_v do_v the_o one_o in_o our_o own_o tune_n as_o well_o as_o the_o other_o in_o our_o own_o tongue_n there_o be_v yet_o one_o objection_n more_o against_o sing_v of_o david_n psalm_n which_o be_v not_o think_v on_o at_o the_o preach_n of_o these_o sermon_n and_o it_o be_v this_o obj._n as_o the_o scripture_n command_v we_o to_o pray_v but_o prescribe_v we_o no_o set_v form_n of_o prayer_n which_o we_o be_v bind_v to_o use_v and_o no_o other_o so_o when_o it_o command_v we_o to_o sing_v psalm_n it_o do_v not_o tie_v we_o to_o any_o form_n but_o leave_v we_o to_o our_o liberty_n for_o if_o we_o be_v not_o tie_v to_o a_o form_n in_o pray_v why_o shall_v we_o be_v tie_v up_o to_o any_o form_n in_o sing_v i_o dare_v not_o say_v as_o some_o do_v that_o all_o form_n of_o prayer_n be_v forbid_v by_o the_o second_o commandment_n nor_o yet_o that_o they_o whole_o stint_v and_o quench_v the_o spirit_n but_o to_o let_v that_o pass_v i_o answer_v sol._n 1._o the_o apostle_n have_v prescribe_v we_o what_o to_o sing_v viz._n psalm_n and_o hymn_n and_o spiritual_a song_n which_o be_v the_o express_a title_n of_o david_n psalm_n as_o be_v show_v before_o 2._o there_o be_v a_o difference_n in_o this_o that_o the_o lord_n do_v not_o prescribe_v unto_o his_o people_n set_v form_n of_o prayer_n as_o he_o prescribe_v set_v form_n of_o psalm_n 2_o chron._n 29._o 30_o they_o be_v to_o sing_v in_o the_o word_n of_o david_n and_o asaph_n but_o we_o read_v not_o that_o they_o be_v to_o pray_v in_o any_o such_o set_a form_n god_n give_v they_o a_o psalm_n book_n but_o not_o a_o prayer-book_n as_o be_v say_v before_o 3._o when_o the_o psalm_n of_o david_n and_o asaph_n be_v ordinary_o sing_v in_o the_o temple_n dare_v any_o man_n say_v that_o the_o spirit_n either_o in_o the_o levite_n or_o other_o be_v stint_v or_o quench_v and_o why_o shall_v it_o be_v stint_v now_o more_o than_o it_o be_v then_o since_o we_o have_v the_o same_o form_n which_o god_n himself_o appoint_v why_o may_v we_o not_o expect_v the_o same_o enlargement_n of_o heart_n as_o the_o people_n of_o god_n have_v then_o 4._o we_o must_v sing_v in_o a_o form_n or_o not_o at_o all_o as_o i_o show_v former_o though_o we_o may_v very_o well_o pray_v without_o it_o since_o therefore_o we_o must_v have_v a_o form_n why_o shall_v we_o not_o prefer_v such_o as_o god_n have_v appoint_v before_o any_o other_o sermon_n ii_o ephes._n 5._o 19_o speak_v to_o yourselves_o in_o psalm_n and_o hymn_n and_o spiritual_a song_n sing_v etc._n etc._n the_o apostle_n call_v upon_o the_o people_n of_o god_n to_o edify_v themselves_o in_o sing_v of_o psalm_n this_o we_o have_v prove_v to_o be_v the_o duty_n of_o christian_n and_o answer_v some_o objection_n make_v against_o it_o obj._n but_o how_o can_v christian_n do_v this_o in_o a_o mix_a congregation_n will_n some_o say_v where_o there_o be_v a_o multitude_n that_o join_v in_o the_o duty_n who_o yet_o god_n know_v be_v no_o way_n able_a to_o do_v it_o in_o such_o a_o manner_n as_o may_v be_v either_o please_a to_o god_n or_o profitable_a to_o their_o own_o soul_n they_o can_v sing_v in_o their_o heart_n nor_o to_o the_o lord_n and_o hence_o some_o complain_v they_o be_v much_o scandalize_v to_o hear_v profane_a and_o ungodly_a man_n in_o their_o sing_n of_o psalm_n profeâ—…s_v their_o repentance_n the_o integriâ—…y_n and_o uprightness_n of_o their_o heart_n when_o god_n know_v there_o be_v no_o such_o thing_n in_o they_o therefore_o say_v they_o what_o do_v such_o man_n in_o sing_v but_o sound_v out_o so_o many_o lie_n yea_o and_o blaspheme_v the_o holy_a name_n and_o truth_n of_o god_n in_o do_v of_o that_o duty_n and_o this_o so_o trouble_n and_o distract_v they_o that_o they_o can_v find_v in_o their_o heart_n to_o join_v in_o the_o duty_n with_o such_o profane_a people_n this_o be_v i_o conceive_v the_o main_a thing_n that_o trouble_v the_o most_o and_o therefore_o though_o there_o be_v but_o
may_v so_o call_v it_o the_o bible_n of_o the_o bible_n as_o one_o star_n differ_v from_o another_o in_o glory_n so_o may_v we_o say_v of_o the_o scripture_n some_o part_n of_o it_o be_v more_o excellent_a in_o respect_n of_o our_o necessity_n than_o other_o and_o yet_o all_o be_v excellent_a and_o useful_a and_o of_o divine_a authority_n so_o i_o may_v say_v of_o sing_v and_o read_v the_o psalm_n both_o be_v useful_a yet_o it_o will_v not_o follow_v but_o sing_v at_o some_o time_n may_v be_v more_o useful_a for_o some_o purpose_n as_o for_o instance_n it_o be_v more_o useful_a as_o i_o have_v show_v for_o sweet_a rejoice_n in_o god_n and_o his_o word_n with_o gladness_n of_o heart_n by_o this_o time_n somewhat_o i_o hope_v have_v be_v say_v towards_o the_o satisfy_n of_o those_o that_o pretend_v they_o know_v not_o how_o to_o apply_v many_o passage_n in_o david_n psalm_n i_o say_v again_o if_o there_o be_v no_o other_o way_n of_o apply_v they_o they_o may_v do_v it_o this_o way_n viz._n by_o a_o sweet_a meditation_n on_o they_o or_o by_o exercise_v their_o heart_n with_o holy_a delight_n and_o rejoice_v in_o meditate_v on_o god_n word_n i_o say_v not_o this_o be_v the_o only_a way_n of_o accommodate_v they_o but_o this_o be_v one_o and_o i_o think_v a_o good_a one_o too_o there_o be_v no_o passage_n in_o any_o psalm_n but_o may_v be_v apply_v and_o make_v use_n of_o this_o way_n i_o can_v but_o remember_v you_o what_o a_o reverend_a man_n now_o alive_a say_v in_o this_o case_n it_o be_v ignorance_n of_o a_o man_n self_n and_o the_o way_n of_o god_n to_o think_v any_o psalm_n be_v unsuitable_a to_o any_o man_n condition_n if_o he_o be_v a_o good_a christian_a especial_o some_o psalm_n set_v forth_o the_o attribute_n excellency_n and_o work_n of_o god_n and_o his_o christ_n these_o minister_n occasion_n of_o reverence_n blessing_n praise_v admire_a and_o adore_v god_n some_o set_v forth_o the_o the_o estate_n and_o way_n of_o the_o church_n and_o people_n of_o god_n some_o their_o misery_n calamity_n sorrow_n and_o suffering_n these_o offer_n to_o we_o matter_n of_o compassion_n instruction_n imitation_n some_o set_v forth_o the_o estate_n and_o way_n of_o wicked_a man_n and_o in_o these_o we_o have_v a_o word_n of_o admonition_n some_o be_v excellent_a to_o express_v our_o own_o affection_n affliction_n suffering_n comfort_n and_o then_o a_o man_n afterwards_o pen_v the_o thirty_o four_o psalm_n what_o then_o will_v thou_o not_o therefore_o sing_v these_o psalm_n or_o do_v thou_o think_v they_o do_v not_o concern_v thou_o thou_o may_v as_o be_v no_o psalm_n or_o part_n of_o a_o psalm_n that_o have_v not_o somewhat_o for_o our_o learning_n this_o may_v serve_v to_o satisfy_v they_o who_o be_v afraid_a they_o lie_v in_o sing_v those_o passage_n of_o the_o psalm_n which_o do_v not_o express_v their_o condition_n in_o particular_a it_o be_v no_o lie_n in_o a_o godly_a man_n mouth_n to_o sing_v this_o passage_n in_o the_o six_o psalm_n i_o be_o weary_a with_o my_o groan_n all_o the_o night_n make_v i_o my_o bed_n to_o swim_v etc._n etc._n if_o it_o be_v a_o lie_n to_o sing_v it_o be_v as_o much_o a_o lie_n to_o say_v it_o and_o then_o we_o must_v not_o read_v that_o psalm_n for_o fear_n of_o lie_v but_o we_o sing_v it_o as_o we_o read_v it_o for_o the_o good_a doctrine_n that_o may_v be_v learn_v from_o it_o viz._n that_o when_o god_n rebuke_n and_o chasten_v in_o displeasure_n no_o poor_a soul_n be_v able_a to_o abide_v it_o that_o the_o sense_n of_o god_n wrath_n be_v more_o grievous_a to_o be_v bear_v than_o any_o other_o burden_n whatsoever_o that_o in_o our_o repentance_n and_o turn_n to_o god_n there_o ought_v to_o be_v very_o great_a sorrow_n arise_v from_o the_o sense_n of_o god_n wrath_n due_a to_o sin_n and_o that_o our_o sorrow_n for_o sin_n ought_v to_o be_v the_o great_a of_o all_o other_o etc._n etc._n as_o for_o that_o place_n psal._n 6._o 6._o the_o expression_n be_v as_o i_o take_v it_o hyperbolical_a and_o intend_v to_o express_v what_o heat_n there_o be_v in_o the_o fire_n of_o god_n wrath_n such_o and_o so_o great_a as_o it_o even_o melt_v david_n into_o tear_n he_o be_v exceed_o grieve_v and_o weep_v abundant_o and_o so_o do_v many_o of_o god_n servant_n many_o time_n and_o therefore_o may_v say_v as_o david_n do_v we_o make_v our_o bed_n to_o swim_v etc._n etc._n or_o say_v it_o be_v the_o greatness_n of_o his_o bodily_a afffliction_n that_o make_v he_o to_o weep_v so_o abundant_o and_o excessive_o yet_o we_o may_v learn_v something_o from_o it_o as_o i_o show_v even_o now_o sure_o all_o scripture_n be_v write_v as_o the_o apostle_n say_v rom._n 15._o 4._o for_o our_o learning_n thou_o can_v not_o in_o every_o respect_n say_v as_o paul_n 2_o tim._n 4._o 8._o i_o be_o ready_a to_o be_v offer_v and_o the_o time_n of_o my_o departure_n be_v at_o hand_n etc._n etc._n and_o yet_o thou_o think_v it_o not_o a_o lie_n in_o thy_o mouth_n to_o recite_v those_o word_n when_o thou_o read_v that_o chapter_n few_o christian_n i_o fear_n be_v come_v so_o far_o as_o to_o say_v with_o the_o apostle_n phil._n 1._o 23._o i_o be_o willing_a to_o depart_v and_o to_o be_v with_o christ_n etc._n etc._n yet_o any_o chrâ—…stian_n may_v read_v that_o passage_n without_o danger_n of_o lie_v as_o i_o suppose_v sure_a i_o be_o there_o be_v matter_n of_o consolation_n and_o yet_o methinks_v other_o may_v and_o yet_o they_o that_o except_o against_o some_o if_o i_o mistake_v not_o refuse_v all_o so_o that_o it_o seem_v there_o be_v nothing_o in_o they_o that_o will_v serve_v their_o turn_n or_o suit_n with_o their_o condition_n obj._n yes_o it_o will_v be_v say_v there_o be_v some_o psalm_n or_o part_n of_o psalm_n that_o suit_n well_o enough_o with_o our_o condition_n affection_n and_o occasion_n but_o that_o which_o fit_v we_o well_o enough_o be_v nothing_o so_o fit_a for_o other_o sol._n 1._o there_o be_v several_a use_n of_o the_o psalm_n as_o there_o be_v of_o other_o scripture_n why_o may_v we_o not_o in_o sing_v as_o well_o as_o in_o hear_v apply_v to_o ourselves_o that_o which_o be_v most_o pertinent_a to_o our_o proper_a case_n and_o so_o those_o that_o be_v not_o in_o the_o same_o condition_n may_v yet_o profitable_o sing_v the_o same_o psalm_n even_o as_o they_o may_v hear_v the_o same_o sermon_n beside_o all_o the_o psalm_n and_o every_o part_n of_o they_o be_v fit_v to_o the_o occasion_n of_o all_o god_n people_n so_o as_o there_o be_v nothing_o but_o minister_n matter_n of_o sweet_a meditation_n and_o praise_v god_n by_o a_o holy_a rejoice_n in_o he_o i_o know_v not_o how_o well_o some_o psalm_n will_v suit_v with_o some_o man_n affection_n or_o condition_n once_o i_o be_o sure_a that_o god_n people_n from_o the_o beginning_n of_o the_o world_n to_o this_o day_n have_v have_v cause_n as_o to_o complain_v and_o pray_v so_o to_o bless_v and_o praise_v the_o lord_n in_o the_o very_a same_o manner_n and_o sense_n of_o hear_v which_o we_o use_v only_o for_o necessity_n sake_n because_o many_o can_v read_v the_o psalm_n themselves_o though_o i_o advise_v and_o entreat_v all_o that_o can_v read_v to_o use_v their_o book_n and_o so_o help_v their_o understanding_n for_o when_o a_o line_n only_o be_v read_v the_o sense_n remain_v imperfect_a whereupon_o some_o have_v think_v it_o better_o and_o i_o be_o not_o against_o it_o that_o two_o line_n be_v read_v together_o 2._o again_o i_o do_v hearty_o wish_v there_o be_v some_o amendment_n of_o our_o english_a metre_n in_o two_o or_o three_o particular_n first_o that_o all_o the_o psalm_n may_v run_v in_o such_o metre_n as_o all_o our_o people_n be_v able_a to_o sing_v and_o second_o that_o some_o uncouth_a expression_n and_o obsolete_a word_n be_v alter_v as_o for_o other_o fault_n in_o the_o translation_n they_o will_v be_v chief_o look_v after_o though_o i_o must_v profess_v i_o think_v the_o fault_n be_v not_o so_o many_o or_o so_o great_a as_o some_o man_n will_v make_v they_o there_o be_v no_o doubt_n but_o too_o many_o thing_n which_o i_o stand_v not_o to_o justify_v but_o wish_v with_o all_o my_o heart_n they_o be_v well_o amend_v yet_o this_o must_v be_v consider_v that_o nothing_o can_v be_v do_v by_o man_n but_o it_o will_v be_v imperfect_a their_o argue_v therefore_o be_v not_o so_o good_a to_o my_o think_n who_o will_v not_o sing_v david_n psalm_n because_o of_o some_o flaw_n in_o the_o translation_n for_o my_o part_n i_o know_v no_o translation_n of_o the_o bible_n but_o have_v its_o mistake_n and_o i_o suppose_v we_o all_o look_v upon_o translation_n as_o imperfect_a and_o yet_o we_o do_v not_o upon_o that_o ground_n refuse_v to_o read_v the_o scripture_n that_o there_o be_v fault_n i_o grant_v but_o that_o they_o be_v such_o as_o shall_v cause_v we_o to_o forbear_v sing_v till_o they_o be_v amend_v i_o deny_v some_o have_v not_o stick_v to_o say_v there_o be_v lie_n in_o our_o sing_a psalm_n but_o their_o word_n be_v no_o slander_n though_o there_o be_v mistake_n it_o will_v not_o follow_v there_o be_v lie_n i_o believe_v there_o be_v no_o translation_n of_o the_o bible_n but_o there_o be_v some_o mistake_n in_o it_o and_o yet_o it_o be_v foul_a language_n to_o say_v there_o be_v lie_n for_o the_o mistake_n i_o hearty_o wish_v they_o amend_v and_o do_v much_o approve_v of_o their_o excellent_a pain_n who_o have_v altogether_o change_v our_o english_a metre_n yet_o consider_v our_o people_n have_v be_v use_v to_o these_o i_o conceive_v it_o far_o better_o for_o the_o present_a necessity_n to_o let_v they_o alone_o with_o some_o alteration_n in_o some_o thing_n such_o as_o i_o speak_v of_o even_o now_o and_o if_o some_o one_o that_o be_v due_o qualify_v for_o such_o a_o work_n will_v undertake_v it_o i_o suppose_v under_o favour_n it_o will_v be_v a_o excellent_a piece_n of_o service_n to_o the_o church_n of_o god_n among_o we_o and_o he_o shall_v deserve_v very_o much_o at_o the_o hand_n of_o all_o devout_a and_o godly_a christian_n 3._o again_o there_o ought_v to_o be_v a_o choice_n of_o psalm_n according_a as_o occasion_n require_v for_o as_o they_o be_v pen_v upon_o occasion_n and_o be_v some_o of_o they_o intend_v more_o especial_o for_o one_o use_n and_o some_o for_o another_o so_o there_o shall_v be_v a_o wise_a choice_n make_v of_o psalm_n to_o be_v sing_v according_a as_o our_o necessity_n and_o occasion_n respective_o call_v for_o the_o 92_o psalm_n be_v entitle_v a_o psalm_n for_o the_o sabbath_n and_o if_o you_o consider_v the_o subject_a matter_n of_o it_o and_o many_o other_o that_o set_v forth_o the_o work_n of_o god_n they_o will_v appear_v very_o fit_a to_o be_v sing_v on_o the_o sabbath_n day_n as_o the_o second_o and_o eight_o and_o other_o psalm_n that_o speak_v of_o the_o kingdom_n of_o christ_n the_o 33_o 34_o and_o 37_o etc._n etc._n that_o treat_v of_o the_o work_n of_o creation_n and_o providence_n so_o the_o 119th_o psalm_n that_o show_v what_o be_v the_o excellent_a use_n of_o god_n word_n and_o what_o affection_n we_o shall_v bear_v towards_o it_o at_o time_n of_o humiliation_n such_o psalm_n be_v to_o be_v sing_v as_o may_v seem_v to_o express_v our_o sense_n of_o sin_n our_o tremble_n at_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n or_o that_o set_v forth_o the_o calamity_n and_o suffering_n of_o god_n people_n at_o time_n of_o rejoice_v choose_v such_o psalm_n as_o mention_v the_o marvellous_a work_n of_o god_n in_o victory_n deliverance_n and_o other_o mercy_n show_v unto_o his_o people_n if_o thus_o there_o be_v a_o wise_a choice_n make_v i_o know_v not_o any_o occasion_n the_o people_n of_o god_n have_v at_o any_o time_n but_o there_o may_v be_v a_o psalm_n find_v to_o answer_v it_o and_o then_o if_o god_n people_n can_v with_o one_o mind_n and_o one_o mouth_n glorify_v god_n what_o a_o pleasant_a and_o comely_a thing_n be_v it_o such_o a_o resemblance_n of_o heaven_n as_o hardly_o a_o better_a can_v be_v find_v upon_o earth_n only_o let_v our_o care_n be_v that_o our_o heart_n be_v well_o tune_v for_o that_o be_v it_o that_o make_v melody_n in_o the_o ear_n of_o the_o lord_n you_o know_v it_o be_v not_o so_o comely_a when_o in_o the_o congregation_n some_o sing_v out_o of_o tune_n but_o the_o great_a absurdity_n of_o all_o be_v when_o our_o heart_n be_v not_o in_o tune_n though_o as_o i_o have_v show_v the_o impiety_n and_o profaneness_n of_o some_o do_v not_o hinder_v the_o acceptance_n of_o other_o yet_o it_o be_v more_o desirable_a and_o that_o which_o we_o shall_v hearty_o wish_v that_o all_o can_v so_o do_v this_o duty_n as_o therein_o to_o please_v god_n and_o profit_n their_o own_o soul_n sure_o if_o we_o sing_v as_o we_o ought_v to_o and_o delight_n in_o the_o law_n of_o god_n and_o other_o such_o expression_n which_o david_n use_v in_o those_o psalm_n sol._n we_o answer_v true_a it_o be_v a_o matter_n of_o scandal_n but_o how_o far_o forth_o we_o shall_v consider_v anon_o he_o that_o sing_v david_n psalm_n and_o not_o with_o a_o sanctify_a heart_n as_o david_n do_v he_o lie_v in_o his_o heart_n and_o in_o his_o throat_n too_o but_o suppose_v such_o a_o one_o shall_v say_v david_n psalm_n or_o pray_v david_n psalm_n or_o read_v they_o out_o of_o a_o book_n or_o join_v with_o the_o minister_n in_o prayer_n where_o he_o be_v the_o mouth_n for_o the_o rest_n that_o do_v join_v with_o he_o do_v he_o not_o profess_v the_o like_a then_o when_o the_o minister_n who_o be_v the_o people_n mouth_n to_o speak_v to_o god_n declare_v the_o experience_n that_o he_o and_o other_o have_v have_v of_o god_n goodness_n and_o the_o work_n of_o grace_n upon_o their_o soul_n when_o he_o profess_v or_o express_v godly_a sorrow_n for_o sin_n lament_v their_o infirmity_n indisposedness_n untowardness_n and_o frowardness_n of_o heart_n and_o further_o bless_v god_n for_o spiritual_a grace_n and_o the_o evidence_n of_o god_n love_n etc._n etc._n when_o i_o say_v the_o minister_n do_v thus_o in_o the_o congregation_n and_o profane_a man_n be_v there_o and_o pretend_v to_o go_v along_o with_o he_o in_o thâ—…s_n do_v they_o not_o lie_v in_o prayer_n since_o they_o never_o have_v experience_n of_o god_n goodness_n and_o the_o work_n of_o god_n upon_o their_o soul_n they_o never_o have_v any_o evidence_n of_o god_n love_n to_o they_o in_o all_o their_o life_n and_o why_o be_v we_o not_o as_o much_o scandalize_v at_o their_o pray_n as_o at_o their_o sing_n for_o though_o they_o make_v not_o such_o a_o noise_n with_o their_o mouth_n in_o prayer_n yet_o they_o do_v lie_v and_o profane_v the_o name_n of_o god_n as_o much_o in_o the_o one_o as_o they_o do_v in_o the_o other_o therefore_o if_o any_o be_v scandalize_v by_o they_o in_o the_o one_o why_o not_o also_o in_o the_o other_o sure_o by_o this_o reason_n we_o must_v not_o only_o forbear_v sing_v but_o pray_v with_o they_o nay_o by_o the_o same_o reason_n we_o may_v not_o hear_v the_o word_n of_o god_n with_o they_o for_o a_o profane_a wretch_n do_v even_o in_o that_o also_o take_v the_o name_n of_o god_n in_o vain_a and_o if_o he_o be_v not_o powerful_o convict_v by_o the_o word_n of_o god_n he_o shall_v be_v one_o day_n make_v to_o know_v what_o a_o sad_a thing_n it_o be_v to_o take_v the_o name_n of_o god_n in_o his_o mouth_n when_o he_o hate_v to_o be_v reform_v unto_o the_o wicked_a god_n say_v what_o have_v thou_o to_o do_v to_o declare_v my_o statute_n or_o that_o thou_o shall_v take_v my_o covenant_n in_o thy_o mouth_n see_v thou_o hate_v instruction_n and_o cast_v my_o word_n behind_o thou_o this_o argument_n be_v that_o which_o be_v urge_v for_o separation_n and_o if_o it_o hold_v good_a for_o separate_v in_o one_o it_o in_o hear_v we_o come_v to_o sit_v before_o he_o as_o his_o people_n to_o ask_v counsel_n of_o god_n and_o to_o know_v his_o will_n and_o there_o profess_v whatsoever_o the_o lord_n shall_v command_v we_o that_o we_o will_v do_v thus_o there_o be_v spiritual_a communion_n with_o god_n in_o hear_v the_o word_n as_o well_o as_o in_o pray_v and_o sing_v of_o psalm_n so_o then_o if_o we_o may_v not_o sing_v nor_o pray_v neither_o may_v we_o hear_v with_o mix_a company_n and_o if_o it_o be_v thus_o the_o people_n of_o god_n be_v in_o a_o very_a sad_a condition_n i_o say_v again_o if_o the_o other_o i_o have_v hear_v that_o some_o have_v forbear_v prayer_n in_o their_o family_n with_o their_o child_n and_o servant_n because_o they_o think_v they_o not_o good_a enough_o to_o pray_v withal_o i_o desire_v these_o to_o consider_v what_o paul_n do_v in_o the_o ship_n before_o the_o company_n he_o sail_v with_o he_o be_v not_o so_o scrupulous_a but_o give_v thanks_o to_o god_n even_o before_o profess_a infidel_n and_o heathen_n act_n 27._o 35._o he_o take_v bread_n and_o give_v thanks_o to_o god_n in_o the_o presence_n of_o they_o all_o because_o he_o know_v it_o be_v a_o duty_n which_o all_o man_n be_v bind_v to_o do_v and_o though_o they_o do_v not_o nor_o can_v not_o do_v it_o as_o they_o shall_v yet_o it_o be_v their_o duty_n and_o therefore_o paul_n praise_v god_n even_o in_o the_o presence_n of_o those_o wicked_a man_n so_o may_v we_o do_v the_o like_a though_o wicked_a man_n be_v by_o and_o join_v in_o the_o duty_n what_o be_v that_o to_o we_o oh_a but_o it_o much_o trouble_n and_o distract_v they_o when_o they_o see_v man_n of_o profane_a spirit_n join_v with_o they_o and_o blaspheme_v as_o they_o say_v the_o name_n of_o god_n alas_o for_o they_o that_o they_o be_v so_o tender_a of_o god_n honour_n but_o be_v it_o so_o indeed_o or_o be_v not_o this_o another_o lie_n it_o be_v notorious_o know_v there_o be_v many_o great_a and_o horrid_a blasphemy_n against_o jesus_n christ_n and_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o the_o scripture_n etc._n etc._n and_o yet_o i_o hear_v not_o much_o of_o their_o be_v scandalize_v at_o these_o but_o they_o be_v mighty_o scandalize_v to_o hear_v wicked_a man_n sing_v psalm_n but_o methinks_v if_o they_o be_v indeed_o scandalize_v at_o this_o they_o shall_v be_v more_o scandalize_v at_o those_o other_o blasphemy_n and_o true_o let_v i_o tell_v they_o their_o not_o be_v scandalize_v at_o those_o horrid_a blasphemy_n indeed_o before_o speak_v of_o be_v a_o very_a great_a scandal_n to_o many_o that_o be_v true_o godly_a oh_o that_o there_o be_v no_o other_o blasphemy_n in_o england_n than_o sing_v of_o psalm_n by_o wicked_a man_n and_o that_o one_o day_n in_o a_o week_n but_o do_v not_o the_o land_n mourn_v because_o of_o oath_n and_o be_v not_o many_o wicked_a one_o all_o the_o week_n long_o blaspheme_v the_o live_a god_n yet_o some_o of_o these_o man_n who_o make_v this_o objection_n have_v not_o show_v at_o any_o time_n that_o we_o have_v see_v so_o much_o dislike_n of_o these_o blasphemy_n if_o you_o be_v trouble_v at_o
miserable_a confusion_n of_o all_o christ_n enemy_n and_o opposer_n and_o the_o bless_a condition_n of_o such_o as_o submit_v themselves_o to_o he_o now_o these_o psalm_n be_v mere_o doctrinal_a and_o have_v nothing_o but_o instruction_n and_o admonition_n in_o they_o and_o be_v sing_v as_o well_o as_o other_o to_o the_o ptaise_v of_o god_n hence_o i_o say_v one_o end_n of_o our_o sing_v they_o be_v to_o learn_v the_o doctrine_n of_o they_o that_o it_o may_v be_v imprint_v upon_o our_o spirit_n or_o a_o sweet_a meditation_n in_o our_o heart_n upon_o that_o heavenly_a doctrine_n contain_v in_o those_o psalm_n to_o imprint_v it_o upon_o our_o mind_n and_o memory_n that_o we_o may_v be_v the_o more_o affect_v with_o it_o some_o psalm_n be_v mix_v and_o but_o in_o part_n doctrinal_a as_o psal._n 33._o and_o 34._o the_o angel_n of_o the_o lord_n encamp_v round_o about_o they_o that_o fear_v he_o the_o lion_n shall_v lack_v and_o suffer_v hunger_n but_o those_o that_o seek_v the_o lord_n shall_v not_o want_v any_o good_a thing_n etc._n etc._n these_o be_v doctrine_n of_o god_n providence_n â—…d_v care_n over_o his_o people_n and_o one_o main_a work_n of_o our_o heart_n and_o spirit_n in_o sing_v these_o and_o such_o like_a passage_n be_v to_o meditate_v upon_o those_o doctrine_n and_o in_o so_o do_v we_o give_v glory_n to_o god_n teach_v and_o admonish_v ourselves_o in_o a_o psalm_n col._n 3._o 16._o object_n but_o we_o may_v as_o well_o read_v they_o and_o so_o meditate_v on_o they_o for_o our_o instruction_n therefore_o there_o be_v no_o necessity_n that_o we_o shall_v sing_v psalm_n for_o that_o reason_n sol._n i_o deny_v not_o but_o we_o ought_v to_o read_v the_o psalm_n as_o any_o other_o scripture_n and_o in_o and_o after_o our_o read_n to_o meditate_v upon_o they_o in_o commend_v of_o sing_v i_o do_v not_o cry_v down_o read_v one_o good_a duty_n shall_v not_o shut_v out_o another_o so_o because_o we_o read_v the_o psalm_n and_o meditate_v on_o govern_v the_o world_n he_o draw_v to_o a_o close_a of_o it_o in_o the_o 34_o verse_n profess_v his_o joy_n in_o the_o lord_n from_o the_o consideration_n of_o god_n power_n and_o providence_n i_o will_v sing_v unto_o praise_n to_o my_o god_n while_o i_o have_v my_o be_v the_o lord_n as_o long_o as_o i_o live_v i_o will_v sing_v why_o unto_o god_n that_o make_v i_o that_o make_v all_o the_o world_n that_o maintain_v my_o soul_n in_o life_n and_o then_o he_o add_v my_o meditation_n of_o he_o shall_v be_v sweet_a and_o i_o will_v be_v glad_a in_o the_o lord_n david_n will_v not_o only_o well_o as_o sing_v it_o i_o answer_v sing_v will_v affect_v we_o more_o than_o read_v as_o pray_v with_o the_o voice_n do_v affect_v we_o more_o than_o when_o we_o pray_v and_o do_v not_o use_v our_o tongue_n you_o shall_v find_v your_o heart_n will_v be_v more_o apt_a to_o wander_v if_o you_o do_v not_o use_v your_o voice_n than_o they_o will_v be_v if_o you_o do_v therefore_o as_o we_o shall_v use_v our_o voice_n to_o help_v we_o in_o prayer_n so_o why_o shall_v we_o not_o lift_v up_o the_o voice_n in_o sing_v that_o we_o may_v be_v help_v also_o in_o our_o meditation_n even_o with_o enlargement_n and_o ravishment_n of_o spirit_n questionless_a the_o lift_n up_o of_o the_o voice_n be_v a_o great_a help_n to_o enlarge_v the_o heart_n when_o it_o be_v well_o affect_v now_o when_o people_n complain_v and_o say_v their_o heart_n be_v not_o suitable_a to_o such_o and_o such_o passage_n in_o the_o psalm_n nor_o those_o passage_n to_o their_o heart_n i_o say_v that_o there_o be_v no_o passage_n in_o all_o david_n psalm_n but_o thou_o may_v accommodate_v it_o if_o no_o otherwise_o yet_o in_o this_o way_n viz._n by_o a_o sweet_a meditation_n upon_o it_o and_o i_o will_v fain_o christian_n may_v not_o meditate_v upon_o and_o so_o take_v comfort_n in_o god_n and_o his_o word_n and_o so_o you_o may_v be_v satisfy_v about_o the_o historical_a psalm_n and_o those_o passage_n in_o they_o that_o have_v respect_n to_o other_o man_n and_o other_o time_n as_o near_o as_o i_o can_v i_o shall_v instance_n in_o some_o of_o all_o kind_n some_o psalm_n be_v only_o doctrinal_a some_o be_v only_o historical_a as_o the_o 78_o psalm_n the_o 105_o and_o 106_o psalm_n etc._n etc._n
sabbath_n the_o prophet_n give_v this_o as_o a_o reason_n of_o that_o joyful_a solemnity_n ver._n 4._o for_o thou_o lord_n have_v make_v i_o glad_a through_o thy_o work_n i_o will_v triumph_v in_o
