to_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o truth_n remain_v still_o either_o in_o ignorance_n or_o in_o disobedience_n of_o heart_n at_o least_o in_o much_o deadness_n of_o spirit_n without_o zeal_n life_n or_o activity_n in_o holy_a duty_n thus_o we_o can_v but_o observe_v with_o grief_n of_o heart_n a_o exercise_n in_o itself_o every_o way_n useful_a fruitful_a and_o comfortable_a if_o it_o be_v due_o no_o other_o book_n but_o the_o scripture_n that_o god_n church_n must_v have_v a_o law_n law_n that_o god_n church_n must_v have_v a_o law_n prove_v 1_o t_o by_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n direct_v constant_a practice_n of_o all_o nation_n and_o society_n of_o man_n from_o the_o begin_n of_o the_o world_n as_o have_v find_v the_o establish_n of_o law_n the_o only_a mean_n of_o preserve_v themselves_o from_o ruin_n the_o truth_n be_v there_o be_v never_o find_v any_o nation_n so_o barbarous_a that_o be_v not_o govern_v by_o some_o kind_n of_o law_n or_o other_o if_o then_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n direct_v all_o man_n general_o to_o the_o use_n of_o law_n as_o the_o main_a band_n of_o humane_a society_n and_o the_o best_a remedy_n against_o confusion_n and_o ruin_n that_o
necessary_o attend_v upon_o it_o shall_v we_o think_v that_o the_o god_n of_o nature_n the_o fountain_n of_o all_o wisdom_n the_o first_o and_o best_a former_a of_o society_n will_v leave_v the_o body_n of_o a_o society_n compose_v by_o himself_o as_o it_o be_v the_o work_n of_o his_o own_o hand_n in_o more_o hazard_n than_o man_n do_v the_o state_n which_o they_o settle_v and_o establish_v by_o their_o counsel_n again_o society_n 2_o because_o the_o church_n of_o all_o society_n most_o need_v a_o law_n as_o be_v 1_o both_z the_o large_a &_o most_o disperse_v of_o all_o society_n we_o know_v that_o the_o large_a the_o body_n of_o a_o state_n be_v and_o the_o more_o disperse_v the_o more_o need_v it_o have_v to_o be_v firm_o knit_v together_o by_o those_o strong_a band_n of_o society_n now_o we_o see_v the_o small_a society_n that_o be_v among_o man_n and_o the_o most_o near_o compact_v together_o the_o inhabitant_n of_o one_o small_a city_n the_o fellow_n of_o one_o college_n govern_v by_o law_n and_o order_n whereas_o the_o church_n be_v the_o large_a of_o all_o society_n in_o the_o world_n in_o extent_n and_o most_o disperse_v as_o be_v possible_a to_o be_v scatter_v over_o the_o whole_a face_n of_o the_o earth_n and_o consequent_o above_o all_o other_o state_n on_o earth_n need_v to_o be_v establish_v by_o the_o best_a law_n as_o be_v hard_a to_o be_v govern_v and_o most_o subject_a to_o disorder_v and_o confusion_n without_o they_o in_o the_o next_o place_n we_o see_v the_o law_n of_o man_n reach_v no_o far_o than_o the_o order_n of_o man_n outward_a conversation_n heart_n 2_o to_o be_v order_v in_o the_o very_a motion_n of_o the_o heart_n and_o meddle_v not_o with_o the_o inward_a thought_n and_o motion_n of_o the_o mind_n but_o in_o counterfeit_a now_o the_o church_n acknowledge_v no_o other_o book_n for_o the_o word_n or_o law_n of_o god_n but_o this_o alone_a neither_o do_v ever_o any_o dare_v to_o pretend_v that_o any_o other_o book_n beside_o this_o be_v god_n word_n or_o law_n if_o any_o shall_v the_o very_a compare_v of_o such_o bastard-writing_n with_o the_o true_a word_n will_v easy_o discover_v they_o to_o be_v no_o better_o then_o counterfeit_a but_o to_o clear_v this_o point_n more_o full_o we_o shall_v desire_v to_o manifest_v this_o one_o truth_n more_o which_o any_o sober_a mind_a man_n will_v easy_o assent_v unto_o namely_o that_o it_o be_v neither_o possible_a nor_o in_o any_o sort_n convenient_a that_o the_o law_n for_o the_o govern_n of_o the_o church_n shall_v be_v give_v by_o any_o other_o
