charge_n of_o god_n elect_v it_o be_v god_n that_o justify_v who_o shall_v condemn_v it_o be_v christ_n that_o die_v which_o be_v bring_v in_o as_o faith_n answer_n to_o the_o charge_n the_o charge_n king_n have_v the_o same_o influence_n and_o the_o same_o causality_n in_o our_o justification_n that_o faith_n be_v rest_v on_o christ_n satisfy_v for_o as_o a_o priest_n have_v because_o as_o christ_n priestly_a office_n give_v we_o a_o warrant_n to_o rest_v upon_o he_o for_o justification_n so_o will_v his_o kingly_a office_n if_o it_o be_v the_o object_n of_o justify_v faith_n as_o such_o when_o take_v hold_v of_o for_o our_o obedience_n we_o have_v touch_v on_o this_o 1._o that_o you_o may_v see_v the_o warrantableness_n of_o this_o doctrine_n which_o be_v receive_v in_o the_o church_n of_o christ_n and_o that_o you_o may_v consider_v christ_n as_o the_o high_a priest_n of_o your_o profession_n and_o plead_v justification_n from_o his_o sacrifice_n act_v faith_n upon_o he_o according_o 2._o that_o we_o may_v put_v a_o bar_n against_o the_o introduce_v of_o justification_n by_o work_n under_o one_o pretext_n or_o another_o how_o specious_a soever_o see_v the_o scripture_n so_o direct_o oppose_v faith_n and_o work_n in_o our_o justification_n for_o if_o we_o once_o admit_v that_o christ_n as_o king_n be_v the_o object_n of_o justify_v faith_n as_o such_o it_o will_v overturn_v the_o distinct_a way_n of_o faith_n act_v upon_o christ_n righteousness_n for_o answer_v the_o charge_n put_v in_o the_o sinner_n hand_n by_o the_o law_n and_o when_o the_o soul_n get_v a_o challenge_n for_o sin_n will_v put_v it_o to_o look_v what_o obedience_n it_o have_v give_v to_o christ_n as_o a_o king_n to_o answer_v that_o challenge_n or_o charge_n by_o and_o will_v in_o the_o same_o manner_n also_o put_v the_o soul_n to_o gather_v the_o ground_n of_o its_o peace_n from_o the_o one_o as_o well_o as_o from_o the_o other_o that_o be_v both_o from_o christ_n righteousness_n and_o from_o its_o own_o obedience_n not_o only_o as_o a_o evidence_n but_o a_o social_a cause_n or_o not_o only_o to_o it_o be_v own_o sense_n but_o as_o to_o the_o effect_n but_o we_o leave_v this_o as_o a_o â—hing_n to_o be_v regret_v that_o when_o theâ—e_n be_v ground_n enough_o of_o stumble_v because_o of_o our_o ignorance_n and_o blindness_n there_o shall_v and_o that_o very_o unnecessary_o be_v such_o new_a occasion_n of_o stumble_v to_o soul_n cast_v in_o the_o way_n of_o faith_n we_o come_v now_o to_o speak_v of_o the_o act_n of_o faith_n as_o justify_v call_v here_o knowledge_n and_o the_o knowledge_n of_o he_o to_o show_v that_o it_o point_v at_o justify_v faith_n for_o if_o it_o be_v not_o so_o it_o be_v the_o same_o with_o common_a knowledge_n whereby_o we_o believe_v any_o history_n of_o the_o bible_n but_o this_o be_v justify_v knowledge_n it_o must_v be_v knowledge_n of_o another_o kind_n we_o shall_v here_o clear_a 1._o wherein_o the_o act_n of_o justify_v faith_n consist_v 2._o remove_v some_o mistake_n about_o it_o and_o make_v some_o use_n of_o it_o for_o the_o first_o we_o suppose_v there_o be_v these_o four_o requisite_a in_o or_o to_o justify_v faith_n though_o not_o always_o in_o the_o same_o degree_n 1._o that_o there_o be_v distinct_a knowledge_n in_o some_o measure_n of_o the_o object_n a_o antecedent_n that_o faith_n presuppose_v and_o
not_o mix_v with_o faith_n and_o that_o for_o make_v the_o duty_n acceptable_a faith_n be_v necessary_o requisite_a we_o may_v clear_o see_v heb._n 11.6_o where_o it_o be_v express_o say_v that_o without_o faith_n it_o be_v impossible_a to_o please_v god_n and_o how_o be_v it_o that_o abel_n offer_v a_o more_o excellent_a sacrifice_n than_o cain_n it_o be_v nothing_o sure_a in_o cain_n sacrifice_n itself_o that_o make_v it_o be_v casten_z nor_o any_o thing_n in_o abel_n that_o make_v it_o be_v receive_v or_o acceptable_a but_o faith_n in_o the_o messiah_n to_o come_v that_o be_v find_v to_o be_v in_o the_o one_o and_o be_v a_o miss_n in_o the_o other_o be_v there_o not_o reason_n then_o to_o press_v this_o duty_n on_o you_o and_o to_o exhort_v you_o not_o to_o think_v this_o a_o common_a and_o easy_a thing_n though_o the_o most_o part_n think_v it_o to_o be_v so_o if_o we_o look_v to_o the_o benefit_n of_o it_o to_o the_o difficulty_n of_o it_o and_o to_o the_o rarity_n of_o it_o in_o the_o world_n there_o be_v no_o duty_n have_v need_n more_o to_o be_v press_v than_o this_o even_o that_o christ_n jesus_n shall_v get_v the_o burden_n of_o your_o immortal_a soul_n cast_v on_o he_o by_o this_o saving_n faith_n i_o shall_v therefore_o in_o the_o further_a prosecution_n of_o this_o first_o show_v what_o main_o you_o will_v eshew_v and_o avoid_v as_o that_o whereat_o folk_n more_o ordinary_o stumble_v second_o what_o it_o be_v we_o will_v press_v you_o to_o and_o on_o what_o ground_n for_o the_o first_o i_o know_v the_o deceit_n and_o mistake_n in_o man_n about_o the_o exercise_n of_o faith_n be_v so_o many_o that_o they_o be_v more_o than_o can_v well_o or_o easy_o be_v reckon_v up_o yet_o we_o shall_v in_o some_o general_n speak_v of_o before_o and_o extract_v you_o out_o of_o they_o and_o therefore_o 1._o beware_v of_o rest_v on_o a_o doctrinal_a faith_n which_o before_o i_o call_v historical_a we_o know_v it_o be_v hard_a to_o convince_v some_o that_o they_o want_v faith_n yet_o we_o will_v have_v you_o to_o consider_v that_o it_o be_v not_o every_o kind_n of_o faith_n but_o save_v faith_n that_o will_v do_v your_o turn_n it_o be_v the_o want_n of_o that_o which_o the_o prophet_n complain_v of_o and_o therefore_o to_o open_v this_o a_o little_a you_o will_v consider_v that_o there_o may_v be_v real_o such_o a_o faith_n as_o be_v a_o assent_n to_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o word_n in_o a_o natural_a man_n yea_o in_o a_o reprobate_n but_o that_o faith_n will_v never_o unite_v to_o christ_n nor_o be_v wait_v with_o the_o pardon_n of_o sin_n first_o i_o do_v not_o say_v that_o every_o one_o that_o be_v in_o the_o visible_a church_n have_v this_o doctrinal_a faith_n to_o believe_v a_o heaven_n and_o a_o hell_n that_o the_o scripture_n be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o that_o all_o that_o believe_v in_o christ_n shall_v get_v pardon_n of_o sin_n and_o life_n the_o carriage_n alace_o of_o many_o testify_v that_o they_o have_v not_o this_o much_o whatever_o fleet_a notion_n they_o may_v have_v of_o these_o thing_n or_o whatever_o esteem_n they_o may_v seem_v to_o put_v on_o the_o gospel_n and_o whatever_o profession_n they_o may_v make_v that_o they_o believe_v the_o truth_n of_o it_o yet_o in_o their_o deed_n they_o deny_v it_o for_o if_o there_o be_v a_o fixedness_n in_o the_o doctrinal_a faith_n of_o the_o gospel_n in_o man_n they_o dare_v not_o for_o their_o soul_n live_v as_o they_o do_v neither_o yet_o second_o do_v we_o say_v that_o all_o they_o that_o have_v this_o doctrinal_a faith_n of_o the_o gospel_n or_o somewhat_o of_o it_o do_v believe_v every_o passage_n in_o it_o alike_o but_o often_o as_o they_o please_v they_o they_o believe_v they_o hence_o many_o believe_v what_o the_o word_n speak_v of_o mercy_n and_o of_o pardon_n of_o sin_n and_o will_v not_o question_v that_o but_o what_o it_o speak_v of_o holiness_n and_o of_o the_o severity_n of_o god_n reckon_n with_o man_n for_o sin_n they_o do_v not_o so_o credit_v that_o part_n of_o the_o word_n it_o be_v true_a where_o the_o faith_n of_o the_o one_o be_v the_o faith_n of_o the_o other_o will_v some_o way_n be_v but_o because_o the_o one_o agree_v better_a with_o their_o corruption_n than_o the_o other_o therefore_o the_o one_o be_v not_o so_o so_o receive_v as_o the_o other_o and_o it_o be_v very_o frequent_a with_o such_o to_o be_v find_v diminish_v from_o one_o place_n and_o add_v to_o another_o of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n nor_o three_o do_v we_o say_v that_o all_o man_n do_v in_o a_o like_a and_o equal_a degree_n believe_v the_o truâ—h_n of_o the_o word_n there_o be_v in_o some_o more_o knowledge_n in_o some_o less_o in_o some_o more_o conviction_n in_o some_o few_o and_o though_o we_o preach_v to_o you_o all_o yet_o there_o be_v some_o that_o believe_v not_o this_o to_o be_v god_n ordinance_n albeit_o there_o be_v many_o who_o will_v not_o be_v save_v that_o take_v this_o word_n to_o be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o believe_v what_o be_v the_o meaning_n of_o it_o because_o the_o word_n itself_o say_v it_o be_v so_o and_o the_o reason_n of_o this_o be_v 1._o because_o there_o be_v nothing_o that_o be_v not_o save_v but_o a_o natural_a man_n may_v hâ—ve_v it_o now_o this_o doctrinal_a faith_n be_v not_o save_v and_o so_o a_o natural_a man_n may_v have_v it_o yea_o the_o devil_n believe_v and_o tremble_v and_o james_n do_v not_o dispute_v with_o these_o to_o who_o he_o write_v on_o this_o account_n that_o they_o believe_v not_o thus_o but_o tell_v they_o that_o historical_a faith_n be_v not_o enough_o and_o we_o think_v a_o man_n in_o nature_n may_v have_v a_o great_a persuasion_n of_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o that_o what_o it_o say_v will_v come_v to_o pass_v and_o yet_o still_o continue_v but_o a_o natural_a man._n a_o second_o reason_n be_v because_o the_o scripture_n speak_v so_o often_o of_o many_o sort_n of_o faith_n that_o be_v not_o save_v as_o exod._n 14._o at_o the_o close_a it_o be_v say_v the_o people_n believe_v the_o lord_n and_o psal_n 106.12_o than_o they_o believe_v his_o word_n and_o sing_v his_o praise_n and_o john_n 2.23_o many_o believe_v on_o christ_n to_o who_o he_o do_v not_o commit_v himself_o there_o be_v faith_n in_o they_o which_o his_o sign_n and_o miracle_n extort_a from_o they_o which_o be_v not_o save_v and_o matth._n 13._o two_o or_o three_o such_o act_n of_o faith_n be_v speak_v of_o in_o the_o parable_n of_o the_o sour_a that_o be_v not_o save_v however_o sound_v they_o may_v be_v in_o their_o own_o kind_n and_o 1_o cor._n 13._o we_o have_v such_o a_o faith_n speak_v of_o as_o a_o man_n dare_v not_o deny_v the_o truth_n of_o the_o word_n though_o he_o shall_v bring_v his_o body_n to_o be_v burn_v by_o his_o avouch_v of_o the_o same_o a_o three_o reason_n be_v because_o as_o much_o credit_n may_v be_v give_v to_o the_o word_n as_o be_v give_v to_o any_o other_o history_n that_o be_v creditable_o believe_v and_o it_o be_v on_o this_o ground_n that_o we_o believe_v there_o be_v such_o man_n as_o cesar_n pompey_n wallace_n etc._n etc._n and_o it_o be_v certain_a that_o there_o may_v be_v impression_n on_o the_o conscience_n of_o hearer_n that_o this_o be_v god_n word_n back_v with_o some_o common_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o that_o it_o be_v general_o receive_v to_o be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n in_o the_o part_n of_o the_o world_n we_o live_v in_o what_o wonder_n be_v it_o that_o folk_n believe_v thus_o and_o drink_v in_o this_o historical_a or_o doctrinal_a faith_n of_o the_o word_n so_o as_o they_o may_v even_o dare_v to_o suffer_v to_o death_n for_o it_o and_o yet_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n they_o may_v want_v save_v faith_n the_o devil_n be_v as_o sure_a as_o any_o natural_a man_n be_v that_o god_n be_v true_a and_o that_o his_o word_n will_v be_v perform_v and_o therefore_o they_o say_v to_o christ_n be_v thou_o come_v to_o torment_v we_o before_o the_o time_n the_o pang_n of_o a_o natural_a conscience_n in_o man_n will_v assure_v they_o of_o a_o judgement_n come_v though_o they_o tremble_v to_o think_v on_o it_o and_o therefore_o ere_o we_o proceed_v further_o take_v a_o word_n of_o use_n from_o this_o and_o it_o may_v let_v you_o see_v the_o great_a and_o very_o general_a mistake_n of_o the_o most_o part_n of_o the_o hearer_n of_o the_o gospel_n in_o rest_v on_o this_o doctrinal_a faith_n if_o you_o tell_v they_o that_o
4.16_o it_o be_v of_o faith_n that_o it_o may_v be_v by_o grace_n to_o the_o end_n the_o promise_n may_v be_v sure_a to_o all_o the_o seed_n for_o if_o it_o be_v not_o of_o grace_n the_o sinner_n will_v never_o think_v himself_o sure_a nor_o will_v he_o know_v if_o such_o a_o sinner_n may_v take_v hold_n of_o such_o a_o promise_n but_o consider_v that_o the_o promise_n be_v of_o grace_n and_o wit_n of_o the_o necessity_n of_o faith_n and_o show_v that_o though_o there_o be_v a_o full_a satisfaction_n lay_v down_o to_o merit_n and_o procure_v justification_n yet_o it_o be_v apply_v to_o sure_o then_o faith_n will_v not_o be_v call_v knowledge_n if_o it_o may_v rather_o be_v define_v ignorance_n but_o this_o they_o maintain_v to_o keep_v the_o people_n in_o ignorance_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o it_o be_v the_o ground_n of_o many_o more_o error_n and_o much_o delusion_n it_o be_v even_o as_o a_o blind_a man_n can_v go_v well_o in_o a_o slippery_a place_n where_o be_v many_o pit_n for_o knowledge_n be_v no_o less_o necessary_a to_o faith_n than_o eye_n be_v to_o such_o a_o man_n the_o practical_a error_n in_o this_o be_v such_o as_o we_o find_v in_o many_o of_o you_o who_o think_v you_o can_v believe_v well_o but_o ask_v and_o put_v you_o to_o it_o you_o can_v tell_v what_o many_o of_o you_o be_v obstinate_a maintainer_n of_o implicit_a faith_n while_o you_o say_v you_o have_v faith_n and_o yet_o can_v tell_v what_o it_o be_v nor_o whereon_o it_o be_v ground_v but_o we_o say_v that_o knowledge_n be_v so_o necessary_a to_o faith_n that_o if_o it_o be_v not_o a_o part_n of_o it_o yet_o it_o be_v necessary_o antecedanious_a to_o it_o and_o presuppose_v therefore_o if_o ever_o you_o will_v be_v account_v believer_n study_v knowledge_n and_o the_o knowledge_n of_o christ_n crucify_a at_o least_o so_o far_o as_o to_o ground_v your_o faith_n upon_o it_o be_v sad_a that_o so_o many_o will_v maintain_v the_o reality_n of_o their_o faith_n and_o yet_o be_v gross_o ignorant_a of_o the_o fundamental_n of_o religion_n knowledge_n be_v the_o very_a use_n of_o and_o first_o step_n to_o believe_v and_o yet_o it_o be_v hardly_o possible_a to_o brangle_v the_o and_o break_v the_o covenant_n of_o work_n and_o make_v himself_o and_o all_o his_o liable_a to_o god_n curse_v that_o we_o be_v by_o that_o covenant_n under_o god_n curse_n that_o christ_n jesus_n may_v make_v no_o confusion_n of_o these_o thing_n that_o be_v distinct_a 1._o we_o deny_v not_o work_n notwithstanding_o of_o all_o that_o we_o have_v say_v to_o be_v necessary_a more_o than_o we_o do_v faith_n but_o the_o great_a difference_n be_v anent_o the_o give_n of_o faith_n and_o work_n or_o faith_n as_o it_o be_v a_o work_n on_o equal_a share_n in_o respect_n of_o causality_n in_o our_o and_o when_o they_o be_v press_v to_o a_o change_n of_o their_o state_n and_o way_n they_o make_v excuse_n partly_o from_o the_o sinfulness_n of_o their_o nature_n that_o they_o can_v do_v nothing_o partly_o from_o the_o abundant_a grace_n of_o god_n that_o he_o must_v do_v all_o but_o it_o will_v never_o excuse_v you_o that_o you_o want_v grace_n and_o have_v a_o sinful_a nature_n for_o who_o know_v that_o you_o shall_v believe_v and_o receive_v the_o offer_n of_o christ_n in_o the_o gospel_n renunce_v your_o own_o righteousness_n and_o betake_v you_o to_o christ_n righteousness_n otherways_o you_o can_v on_o good_a ground_n expect_v to_o be_v justify_v 2._o other_o will_v set_v about_o many_o thing_n that_o be_v good_a but_o the_o work_n of_o believe_v they_o can_v never_o be_v bring_v to_o mind_n or_o own_o they_o will_v make_v a_o sort_n of_o conscience_n of_o prayer_n of_o keep_v the_o church_n of_o read_v the_o scripture_n etc._n etc._n but_o to_o give_v obedience_n to_o the_o command_n of_o believe_v they_o mind_v it_o not_o they_o can_v live_v and_o die_v without_o it_o this_o be_v the_o woeful_a and_o soul-ruining_a practice_n of_o the_o jew_n of_o old_a as_o we_o be_v tell_v rom._n 9_o they_o take_v much_o pain_n to_o come_v by_o righteousness_n but_o they_o attain_v it_o not_o because_o they_o seek_v it_o not_o by_o faith_n but_o as_o it_o be_v by_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n for_o they_o stumble_v at_o that_o stumble_a stone_n when_o they_o have_v go_v part_n of_o the_o way_n as_o it_o be_v and_o come_v to_o the_o stone_n of_o believe_v there_o they_o fall_v and_o break_v their_o neck_n hence_o there_o be_v many_o who_o promise_v heaven_n to_o themselves_o and_o think_v that_o they_o have_v do_v something_o for_o it_o who_o yet_o never_o lay_v hold_v on_o christ_n for_o their_o justification_n but_o let_v i_o tell_v you_o that_o though_o you_o can_v go_v the_o great_a length_n in_o holiness_n that_o ever_o any_o do_v since_o adam_n fall_n it_o will_v not_o avail_v you_o if_o you_o neglect_v faith_n in_o christ_n i_o say_v not_o this_o to_o dissuade_v you_o from_o the_o duty_n of_o holiness_n god_n forbid_v but_o to_o be_v less_o access_n to_o christ_n intercession_n or_o to_o the_o benefit_n thereof_o in_o the_o one_o form_n then_o in_o the_o other_o yet_o 3._o we_o say_v there_o be_v often_o a_o readiness_n to_o miscarry_v in_o this_o form_n of_o petition_n for_o you_o will_v consider_v and_o examine_v 1._o if_o it_o do_v not_o often_o flow_v from_o a_o misinform_v judgement_n within_o and_o if_o it_o have_v that_o have_v not_o that_o distinction_n and_o clearness_n in_o the_o rid_v of_o their_o thought_n in_o this_o mystery_n that_o be_v requisite_a because_o there_o may_v be_v real_a faith_n under_o such_o a_o form_n of_o word_n though_o infirmity_n in_o the_o usemaking_a of_o christ_n intercession_n and_o god_n respect_n that_o wherever_o it_o be_v and_o under_o such_o a_o form_n there_o may_v be_v these_o two_o thing_n 1._o a_o soul-sensibleness_a that_o the_o person_n have_v no_o access_n to_o god_n but_o through_o a_o mediator_n 2._o a_o rest_v on_o the_o mediator_n for_o acceptance_n and_o where_o these_o two_o be_v though_o the_o form_n be_v use_v it_o may_v be_v accept_v although_o if_o faith_n be_v though_o this_o form_n be_v not_o it_o mar_v not_o the_o person_n acceptation_n for_o no_o question_n many_o of_o the_o people_n of_o god_n both_o before_o christ_n come_v and_o sometime_o after_o have_v not_o that_o distinctness_n in_o usemaking_a of_o the_o intercession_n of_o christ_n as_o now_o be_v hold_v forth_o as_o christ_n say_v to_o his_o disciple_n john_n 16.24_o hitherto_o you_o have_v ask_v nothing_o in_o my_o name_n and_o cornelius_n mention_v act._n 10._o and_o other_o their_o prayer_n be_v accept_v of_o god_n though_o they_o rest_v by_o faith_n on_o the_o mediator_n in_o a_o more_o confuse_a dark_a way_n and_o have_v not_o that_o distinctnesse_n in_o they_o
