out_o of_o moses_n and_o all_o the_o prophet_n the_o thing_n which_o concern_v himself_o and_o to_o stir_v up_o our_o own_o soul_n unto_o a_o contemplation_n of_o they_o as_o contain_v therein_o chap._n ix_o the_o glory_n of_o christ_n in_o his_o intimate_a conjunction_n with_o the_o church_n what_o concern_v the_o glory_n of_o christ_n in_o the_o mission_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n unto_o the_o church_n with_o all_o the_o divine_a truth_n that_o be_v branch_v from_o it_o i_o have_v at_o large_a declare_v in_o my_o discourse_n concern_v the_o whole_a dispensation_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n here_o therefore_o it_o must_v have_v no_o place_n among_o those_o many_o other_o thing_n which_o offer_v themselves_o unto_o our_o contemplation_n as_o part_v of_o this_o glory_n or_o benefit_n of_o it_o as_o if_o we_o have_v do_v and_o suffer_v the_o same_o thing_n ourselves_o for_o this_o conjunction_n of_o he_o with_o we_o be_v a_o act_n of_o his_o own_o mind_n and_o will_n wherein_o he_o be_v ineffable_o glorious_a the_o enemy_n of_o the_o glory_n of_o christ_n and_o of_o his_o cross_n do_v take_v this_o for_o grant_v that_o there_o ought_v to_o be_v such_o a_o conjunction_n between_o the_o guilty_a person_n and_o he_o that_o suffer_v for_o he_o as_o that_o in_o he_o the_o guilty_a person_n may_v be_v say_v in_o some_o sense_n to_o undergo_v the_o punishment_n himself_o but_o then_o they_o affirm_v on_o the_o other_o hand_n that_o there_o be_v no_o such_o conjunction_n between_o christ_n and_o sinner_n none_o at_o all_o but_o that_o he_o be_v a_o man_n as_o they_o be_v man_n and_o otherwise_o that_o he_o be_v at_o the_o great_a distance_n from_o they_o all_o as_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o one_o man_n to_o be_v from_o another_o socin_n own_o body_n on_o the_o tree_n and_o chap._n 3._o 18._o that_o he_o suffer_v for_o sin_n the_o just_a for_o the_o unjust_a that_o he_o may_v bring_v we_o unto_o god_n but_o this_o seem_v somewhat_o strange_a unto_o reason_n where_o be_v the_o justice_n where_o be_v the_o equity_n that_o the_o just_a shall_v suffer_v for_o the_o unjust_a where_o be_v divine_a righteousness_n herein_o for_o it_o be_v a_o act_n of_o god_n the_o lord_n have_v lay_v on_o he_o the_o iniquite_v of_o we_o all_o isa._n 53._o 6._o the_o equity_n hereof_o with_o the_o ground_n of_o it_o must_v be_v here_o a_o little_a inquire_v into_o first_o of_o all_o it_o be_v certain_a that_o all_o the_o elect_n the_o whole_a church_n of_o god_n fall_v in_o adam_n under_o the_o curse_n due_a to_o the_o transgression_n of_o it_o but_o can_v bear_v it_o a_o supposition_n of_o this_o translation_n of_o punishment_n by_o divine_a dispensation_n be_v the_o foundation_n of_o christian_a religion_n yea_o of_o all_o supernatural_a revelation_n contain_v in_o the_o scripture_n this_o be_v first_o intimate_v in_o the_o first_o promise_n and_o afterward_o explain_v and_o confirm_v in_o all_o the_o institution_n of_o the_o old_a testament_n for_o although_o in_o the_o sacrifice_n of_o the_o law_n there_o be_v a_o revival_n of_o the_o great_a and_o most_o fundamental_a principal_n of_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n namely_o that_o god_n be_v to_o be_v worship_v with_o our_o best_a yet_o the_o principal_a end_n and_o use_v of_o they_o be_v to_o represent_v this_o translation_n of_o punishment_n from_o the_o offender_n unto_o another_o who_o be_v to_o be_v a_o sacrifice_n in_o his_o stead_n the_o reason_n of_o the_o equity_n hereof_o and_o the_o unspeakable_a glory_n of_o christ_n herein_o be_v what_o we_o now_o inquire_v into_o and_o i_o shall_v reduce_v what_o ought_v to_o be_v speak_v hereunto_o to_o the_o ensue_a head_n 1._o it_o be_v not_o contrary_a unto_o the_o nature_n of_o divine_a speak_v the_o apostle_n eph._n 5._o 25_o 26_o 27_o 28_o 29_o 30_o 31_o 32._o husband_n love_v your_o wife_n even_o as_o christ_n also_o love_v the_o church_n that_o be_v his_o wife_n the_o bride_n the_o lamb_n wife_n and_o give_v himself_o for_o it_o etc._n etc._n be_v the_o head_n and_o husband_n of_o the_o church_n which_o be_v to_o be_v sanctify_v and_o save_v and_o can_v be_v so_o no_o otherwise_o but_o by_o his_o blood_n and_o suffering_n he_o be_v both_o meet_v so_o to_o suffer_v and_o it_o be_v righteous_a also_o that_o what_o he_o do_v and_o suffer_v shall_v be_v impute_v unto_o they_o for_o who_o he_o both_o do_v it_o and_o suffer_v let_v the_o adversary_n of_o the_o glory_n of_o christ_n assign_v any_o one_o instance_n of_o such_o a_o conjunction_n union_n and_o relation_n between_o any_o among_o mankind_n as_o be_v between_o christ_n and_o the_o church_n and_o they_o may_v give_v some_o countenance_n unto_o their_o cavil_n against_o his_o obedience_n and_o suffering_n and_o end_n of_o they_o that_o enter_v into_o it_o so_o that_o be_v most_o eminent_a where_o one_o by_o the_o common_a consent_n of_o all_o that_o be_v concern_v undertake_v to_o be_v a_o sponsor_n or_o surety_n for_o other_o to_o do_v and_o answer_v what_o on_o their_o part_n be_v require_v of_o they_o for_o attain_v the_o end_n of_o the_o covenant_n so_o do_v the_o lord_n christ_n undertake_v to_o be_v surety_n of_o the_o new_a covenant_n in_o behalf_n of_o the_o church_n heb._n 7._o 22._o and_o thereon_o tender_v himself_o unto_o god_n to_o do_v and_o suffer_v for_o they_o in_o their_o stead_n and_o on_o their_o behalf_n whatever_o be_v require_v that_o they_o may_v be_v sanctify_v and_o save_v these_o thing_n i_o have_v treat_v of_o at_o large_a elsewhere_o as_o contain_v a_o great_a part_n of_o the_o mystery_n of_o the_o wisdom_n of_o god_n in_o the_o salvation_n of_o the_o church_n here_o therefore_o i_o do_v only_o observe_v that_o this_o be_v that_o whereby_o the_o mystical_a conjunction_n that_o be_v between_o christ_n and_o the_o church_n whereon_o it_o be_v meet_v just_a and_o equal_a in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n that_o what_o he_o do_v and_o suffer_v shall_v be_v impute_v unto_o we_o be_v complete_v these_o be_v some_o of_o the_o foundation_n of_o that_o mystery_n of_o transmit_v the_o sin_n of_o the_o church_n as_o unto_o the_o guilt_n and_o punishment_n of_o they_o from_o the_o sinner_n themselves_o unto_o another_o every_o way_n innocent_a pure_a and_o righteous_a in_o himself_o which_o be_v the_o life_n soul_n and_o centre_n of_o all_o scripture_n revelation_n and_o herein_o be_v he_o exceed_o glorious_a and_o precious_a unto_o they_o that_o believe_v no_o heart_n can_v conceive_v no_o tongue_n can_v express_v the_o glory_n of_o christ_n herein_o now_o because_o his_o infinite_a condescension_n and_o love_n herein_o have_v be_v speak_v to_o before_o i_o shall_v here_o only_a instance_n its_o greatness_n in_o some_o of_o its_o and_o will_v be_v so_o to_o eternity_n as_o also_o incomprehensible_a unto_o our_o mind_n for_o nothing_o can_v perfect_o comprehend_v that_o which_o be_v infinite_a but_o what_o be_v itself_o infinite_a wherefore_o the_o bless_a and_o blessing_n sight_n which_o we_o shall_v have_v of_o god_n will_v be_v always_o in_o the_o face_n of_o jesus_n christ._n therein_o will_v that_o part_n of_o short_a continuance_n rara_fw-la hora_fw-la brevis_fw-la mora_fw-la but_o it_o be_v from_o our_o own_o sloth_n and_o darkness_n that_o we_o do_v not_o enjoy_v more_o visit_n of_o this_o as_o unto_o what_o be_v present_a they_o desire_v no_o more_o but_o to_o be_v find_v in_o the_o performance_n of_o some_o duty_n in_o answer_n unto_o their_o conviction_n which_o give_v they_o that_o sorry_a peace_n which_o they_o do_v enjoy_v so_o do_v many_o countenance_n themselves_o in_o their_o spiritual_a sloth_n and_o unbelief_n keep_v themselves_o at_o liberty_n to_o seek_v for_o refreshment_n and_o satisfaction_n in_o other_o thing_n whilst_o those_o of_o the_o gospel_n be_v despise_v and_o these_o thing_n be_v inconsistent_a while_o man_n look_v for_o their_o chief_a refreshment_n and_o satisfaction_n in_o temporal_a thing_n it_o be_v impossible_a they_o shall_v seek_v after_o those_o that_o be_v spiritual_a in_o a_o due_a manner_n and_o it_o must_v be_v confess_v that_o when_o we_o have_v a_o due_a regard_n unto_o spiritual_a evangelical_a consolation_n and_o joy_n it_o will_v abate_v and_o take_v off_o our_o affection_n unto_o and_o satisfaction_n in_o present_a enjoyment_n phil._n 3_o 8_o 9_o but_o there_o be_v no_o more_o sacred_a truth_n than_o this_o that_o where_o christ_n be_v present_a with_o believer_n where_o he_o be_v not_o withdraw_v
