capacity_n what_o name_n shall_v i_o give_v to_o this_o wilful_a slander_n but_o here_o his_o lordship_n enter_v into_o passion_n and_o exclaim_n where_o be_v we_o in_o europe_n or_o in_o asia_n gross_a palpable_a pernicious_a flattery_n poison_v of_o a_o commonwealth_n poison_v the_o king_n mind_n but_o where_o be_v his_o lordship_n when_o he_o write_v this_o one_o will_v not_o think_v he_o be_v in_o france_n nor_o that_o this_o doctrine_n be_v write_v in_o the_o year_n 1658_o but_o rather_o in_o the_o year_n 1648_o in_o some_o cabal_n of_o the_o king_n enemy_n but_o what_o do_v put_v he_o into_o this_o fit_a of_o choler_n partly_o this_o very_a thing_n that_o he_o can_v not_o answer_v my_o reason_n but_o chief_o that_o he_o have_v lose_v upon_o i_o so_o much_o school-learning_n in_o our_o controversy_n touch_v liberty_n and_o necessity_n wherein_o he_o be_v to_o blame_v himself_o for_o believe_v that_o the_o obscure_a and_o barbarous_a language_n of_o school_n divinity_n can_v satisfy_v a_o ingenuous_a reader_n as_o well_o as_o plain_a and_o perspicuous_a english_a do_v i_o flatter_v the_o king_n why_o be_o i_o not_o rich_a i_o confess_v his_o lordship_n have_v not_o flatter_v he_o here_o j._n d._n something_o there_o be_v which_o he_o have_v a_o confuse_a glimmer_a of_o as_o the_o blind_a man_n see_v man_n walk_v like_o tree_n which_o he_o be_v not_o able_a to_o apprehend_v and_o express_v clear_o we_o acknowledge_v that_o though_o the_o law_n or_o command_n of_o a_o sovereign_a prince_n be_v erroneous_a or_o unjust_a or_o injurious_a such_o as_o a_o subject_n can_v approve_v for_o good_a in_o themselves_o yet_o he_o be_v bind_v to_o acquiesce_v and_o may_v not_o oppose_v or_o resist_v otherwise_o than_o by_o prayer_n and_o tear_n and_o at_o the_o most_o by_o flight_n we_o acknowledge_v that_o the_o civil_a law_n have_v power_n to_o bind_v the_o conscience_n of_o a_o christian_a in_o themselves_o but_o not_o from_o themselves_o but_o from_o the_o testimony_n of_o a_o good_a conscience_n we_o acknowledge_v that_o in_o doubtful_a case_n semper_fw-la praesumitur_fw-la pro_fw-la rege_fw-la &_o lege_fw-la the_o sovereign_n and_o the_o law_n be_v always_o presume_v to_o be_v in_o the_o right_n but_o in_o plain_a evident_a case_n which_o admit_v no_o doubt_n it_o be_v always_o better_a to_o obey_v god_n than_o man_n blunderer_n whilst_o they_o think_v to_o mend_v one_o imaginary_a hole_n make_v two_o or_o three_o real_a one_o they_o who_o derive_v the_o authority_n of_o the_o scripture_n or_o god_n law_n from_o the_o civil_a law_n of_o man_n be_v like_o those_o who_o seek_v to_o underprop_v the_o heaven_n from_o fall_v with_o a_o bulrush_n nay_o they_o derive_v not_o only_o the_o authority_n of_o the_o scripture_n but_o even_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n itself_o from_o the_o civil_a law_n the_o law_n of_o nature_n which_o need_v no_o promulgation_n in_o the_o condition_n of_o nature_n be_v not_o proper_o law_n but_o quality_n which_o dispose_v man_n to_o peace_n and_o obedience_n when_o a_o commonwealth_n be_v once_o settle_a then_o be_v they_o actual_o law_n and_o not_o before_o god_n help_v we_o into_o what_o time_n be_v we_o fall_v when_o the_o immutable_a law_n of_o god_n and_o nature_n be_v make_v to_o depend_v upon_o the_o mutable_a law_n of_o mortal_a man_n just_a as_o one_o shall_v go_v about_o to_o control_v the_o sun_n by_o the_o authority_n of_o the_o clock_n t._n h._n hitherto_o he_o never_o offer_v to_o mend_v any_o of_o the_o doctrine_n he_o inveigh_v against_o but_o here_o he_o do_v he_o say_v i_o have_v a_o glimmer_n of_o something_o i_o be_v not_o able_a to_o apprehend_v and_o express_v clear_o let_v we_o see_v his_o lordship_n more_o clear_a expression_n we_o acknowledge_v say_v he_o that_o though_o the_o law_n or_o command_n of_o a_o sovereign_a prince_n be_v erroneous_a or_o unjust_a or_o injurious_a such_o as_o a_o subject_n can_v approve_v for_o good_a in_o themselves_o yet_o he_o be_v bind_v to_o acquiesce_v and_o may_v not_o oppose_v or_o resist_v otherwise_o than_o by_o prayer_n and_o tear_n and_o at_o the_o most_o by_o flight_n hence_o it_o follow_v clear_o oppose_v it_o he_o grant_v it_o therefore_o his_o lordship_n have_v not_o here_o express_v himself_o so_o clear_o as_o to_o make_v man_n understand_v the_o difference_n between_o break_v a_o law_n and_o oppose_v it_o though_o there_o be_v some_o difference_n between_o break_v of_o a_o law_n and_o oppose_v those_o that_o be_v send_v with_o force_n to_o see_v it_o execute_v yet_o between_o break_v and_o oppose_v the_o law_n itself_o there_o be_v no_o difference_n also_o though_o the_o subject_n think_v the_o law_n just_a as_o when_o a_o thief_n be_v by_o law_n condemn_v to_o die_v yet_o he_o may_v lawful_o oppose_v the_o execution_n not_o only_o by_o prayer_n tear_n and_o flight_n but_o also_o as_o i_o think_v any_o way_n he_o can_v for_o though_o his_o fault_n be_v never_o so_o great_a yet_o his_o endeavour_n to_o save_v his_o own_o life_n be_v not_o a_o fault_n for_o the_o law_n expect_v it_o and_o for_o that_o cause_n appoint_v felon_n to_o be_v carry_v bind_v and_o encompass_v with_o arm_a man_n to_o execution_n nothing_o be_v opposite_a to_o law_n but_o sin_n nothing_o opposite_a to_o the_o sheriff_n but_o force_n so_o that_o his_o lordship_n sight_n be_v not_o sharp_a enough_o to_o see_v the_o difference_n between_o the_o law_n and_o the_o officer_n again_o we_o acknowledge_v say_v he_o that_o the_o law_n have_v power_n to_o bind_v the_o conscience_n of_o a_o christian_a in_o themselves_o but_o not_o from_o themselves_o neither_o do_v the_o scripture_n bind_v the_o conscience_n because_o they_o be_v scripture_n but_o because_o they_o be_v from_o god_n so_o also_o the_o book_n of_o english_a statute_n bind_v our_o conscience_n in_o itself_o but_o not_o from_o itself_o but_o from_o the_o authority_n of_o the_o king_n who_o only_o in_o the_o right_n of_o god_n have_v the_o legislative_a power_n again_o he_o say_v we_o acknowledge_v that_o in_o doubtful_a case_n the_o sovereign_n and_o the_o law_n be_v always_o presume_v to_o be_v in_o the_o right_n if_o he_o presume_v they_o be_v in_o the_o right_n how_o dare_v he_o presume_v that_o the_o case_n they_o determine_v be_v doubtful_a but_o say_v he_o in_o evident_a case_n which_o admit_v no_o doubt_n it_o be_v always_o better_a to_o obey_v god_n than_o man_n yes_o and_o in_o doubtful_a case_n also_o say_v i._n but_o not_o always_o better_a to_o obey_v the_o inferior_a pastor_n than_o the_o supreme_a pastor_n which_o be_v the_o king_n but_o what_o be_v those_o case_n that_o admit_v no_o doubt_n i_o know_v but_o very_o few_o and_o those_o be_v such_o as_o his_o lordship_n be_v not_o much_o acquaint_v with_o j._n d._n but_o it_o be_v not_o worthy_a of_o my_o labour_n nor_o any_o part_n of_o my_o intention_n to_o pursue_v every_o shadow_n of_o a_o question_n which_o he_o spring_v it_o shall_v suffice_v to_o gather_v a_o posy_n of_o flower_n or_o rather_o a_o bundle_n of_o weed_n
