suspend_v or_o total_o deprive_v of_o his_o ministerial_a office_n as_o be_v any_o other_o officer_n i_o do_v but_o touch_v upon_o and_o give_v light_a glance_n at_o these_o thing_n because_o my_o present_a subject_n will_v not_o give_v i_o leave_v to_o discourse_v large_o upon_o they_o which_o will_v be_v too_o great_a a_o digression_n from_o its_o proper_a business_n chap._n xv._n a_o three_o false_a notion_n of_o christian_a liberty_n viz._n that_o which_o make_v liberty_n of_o conscience_n a_o branch_n of_o it_o two_o thing_n premise_v 1._o that_o conscience_n be_v not_o so_o sacred_a a_o thing_n as_o to_o be_v uncapable_a of_o be_v oblige_v by_o humane_a law_n 2._o that_o no_o man_n can_v proper_o be_v deprive_v of_o the_o true_a liberty_n of_o his_o conscience_n by_o any_o power_n on_o earth_n that_o what_o be_v contend_v for_o be_v more_o proper_o liberty_n of_o practice_n than_o of_o conscience_n the_o author_n opinion_n in_o reference_n to_o this_o liberty_n deliver_v in_o ten_o proposition_n that_o whatsoever_o liberty_n of_o this_o nature_n may_v be_v insist_v on_o as_o our_o right_n it_o be_v not_o christian_a liberty_n but_o natural_a liberty_n three_o and_o last_o i_o proceed_v to_o that_o notion_n of_o christian_a liberty_n which_o make_v liberty_n of_o conscience_n a_o branch_n of_o it_o but_o before_o i_o deliver_v my_o opinion_n about_o this_o weighty_a point_n which_o have_v occasion_v as_o great_a feud_n and_o sharp_a contest_v as_o any_o whatsoever_o i_o shall_v premise_v two_o thing_n first_o that_o conscience_n be_v not_o so_o sacred_a a_o thing_n as_o to_o be_v uncapable_a of_o be_v oblige_v by_o humane_a law_n second_o that_o no_o man_n can_v proper_o be_v deprive_v of_o the_o true_a liberty_n of_o his_o conscience_n by_o any_o power_n on_o earth_n first_o that_o conscience_n be_v not_o so_o sacred_a a_o thing_n as_o to_o be_v uncapable_a of_o be_v oblige_v by_o humane_a law_n this_o be_v sufficient_o clear_a from_o what_o be_v discourse_v in_o the_o thirteen_o chapter_n but_o it_o be_v say_v by_o many_o that_o god_n be_v the_o only_a lord_n of_o conscience_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v the_o high_a presumption_n for_o man_n to_o go_v about_o to_o bind_v it_o by_o their_o law_n it_o be_v the_o sole_a prerogative_n of_o the_o deity_n to_o search_v the_o heart_n 10._o and_o try_v the_o reins_o of_o the_o child_n of_o man_n conscience_n be_v too_o inward_a and_o secret_a a_o thing_n to_o fall_v under_o man_n cognizance_n and_o therefore_o what_o have_v any_o of_o our_o fellow-creature_n to_o do_v to_o give_v law_n to_o our_o conscience_n in_o answer_n hereunto_o we_o have_v already_o see_v what_o s._n paul_n sense_n be_v about_o this_o matter_n that_o he_o say_v we_o must_v needs_o be_v subject_a 5._o or_o obedient_a and_o that_o not_o only_o for_o wrath_n but_o also_o for_o conscience_n sake_n so_o that_o the_o apostle_n be_v far_o from_o think_v that_o the_o obligation_n of_o humane_a authority_n be_v found_v in_o mere_a prudence_n not_o at_o all_o in_o conscience_n but_o no_o man_n in_o his_o wit_n will_v say_v that_o the_o law_n of_o man_n do_v oblige_v conscience_n as_o the_o law_n of_o god_n do_v those_o can_v do_v it_o immediate_o as_o these_o do_v but_o only_o by_o virtue_n of_o the_o divine_a authority_n s._n paul_n say_v rom._n 13._o 1._o let_v every_o soul_n be_v subject_a to_o the_o high_a power_n i_o think_v i_o shall_v not_o be_v over-critical_a in_o say_v that_o be_v every_o conscience_n for_o what_o follow_v prove_v the_o obligation_n of_o conscience_n to_o subjection_n and_o be_v a_o answer_n to_o the_o foresay_a objection_n against_o it_o viz._n for_o there_o be_v no_o power_n but_o
may_v be_v easy_o mistake_v when_o we_o undertake_v to_o determine_v of_o the_o fitness_n of_o they_o thus_o have_v with_o submission_n to_o my_o superior_n offer_v my_o opinion_n about_o this_o weighty_a argument_n in_o the_o forego_n proposition_n i_o hope_v i_o shall_v be_v censure_v as_o immodest_a if_o i_o also_o add_v that_o i_o do_v not_o see_v but_o governor_n may_v avoid_v the_o two_o extreme_n in_o reference_n to_o liberty_n of_o conscience_n as_o it_o be_v call_v by_o have_v a_o constant_a regard_n to_o such_o like_a rule_n and_o that_o the_o govern_v on_o the_o other_o hand_n by_o do_v the_o like_a may_v understand_v without_o much_o difficulty_n within_o what_o bound_n they_o ought_v to_o confine_v themselves_o in_o crave_v of_o their_o governor_n or_o expect_v from_o they_o this_o kind_n of_o liberty_n but_o i_o think_v it_o seasonable_a to_o suggest_v this_o one_o thing_n more_o to_o these_o that_o they_o will_v so_o behave_v themselves_o that_o those_o who_o have_v power_n to_o grant_v it_o as_o far_o as_o be_v sit_v may_v not_o be_v tempt_v to_o think_v it_o a_o thing_n only_o adapt_v to_o the_o serve_v of_o interest_n and_o by_o that_o mean_n be_v the_o more_o incline_v to_o a_o total_a refuse_v of_o any_o such_o liberty_n i_o mean_v that_o there_o be_v no_o occasion_n give_v to_o what_o be_v so_o common_o not_o without_o ground_n say_v viz._n when_o it_o be_v man_n temporal_a interest_n to_o plead_v for_o liberty_n of_o conscience_n than_o they_o be_v zealous_a for_o it_o but_o the_o table_n be_v no_o soon_o turn_v but_o who_o like_o they_o against_o it_o be_v we_o as_o honest_a as_o we_o shall_v be_v we_o shall_v be_v more_o fix_v and_o constant_a and_o not_o so_o vary_v in_o our_o principle_n as_o our_o circumstance_n vary_v we_o shall_v not_o in_o one_o circumstance_n build_v what_o before_o we_o destroy_v and_o in_o another_o destroy_v what_o we_o before_o build_v and_o so_o declare_v amid_o all_o our_o stir_n and_o noise_n about_o liberty_n of_o conscience_n that_o we_o have_v either_o none_o at_o all_o or_o but_o very_o little_a conscience_n but_o in_o the_o conclusion_n of_o all_o i_o must_v not_o forget_v that_o which_o have_v occasion_v all_o this_o discourse_n about_o liberty_n of_o conscience_n viz._n that_o whatever_o that_o liberty_n of_o this_o kind_n be_v which_o we_o have_v a_o right_n to_o it_o be_v not_o a_o branch_n of_o christian_a but_o of_o mere_a natural_a liberty_n there_o be_v no_o text_n of_o scripture_n that_o mention_v this_o as_o a_o liberty_n of_o our_o saviour_n purchase_n and_o therefore_o no_o christian_a may_v claim_v it_o as_o a_o christian._n it_o be_v due_a to_o man_n of_o all_o religion_n who_o may_v be_v suppose_v to_o make_v conscience_n of_o what_o they_o do_v and_o not_o only_o to_o the_o professor_n of_o the_o christian_a religion_n and_o it_o be_v always_o and_o in_o all_o place_n as_o much_o man_n right_a as_o it_o have_v be_v since_o our_o saviour_n appearance_n in_o the_o world_n and_o be_v in_o those_o part_n of_o it_o where_o his_o gospel_n be_v receive_v chap._n xvi_o the_o three_o inference_n from_o our_o notion_n of_o christian_a liberty_n viz._n that_o popery_n be_v the_o great_a enemy_n in_o the_o world_n thereunto_o where_o it_o be_v show_v first_o that_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n rob_v those_o who_o be_v subject_a to_o she_o of_o that_o natural_a liberty_n which_o necessary_o belong_v to_o they_o as_o they_o be_v man_n viz._n that_o which_o consist_v in_o the_o free_a use_n of_o their_o understand_n in_o matter_n of_o religion_n that_o she_o will_v not_o permit_v man_n to_o examine_v either_o her_o doctrine_n or_o practice_n by_o the_o holy_a scripture_n nor_o yet_o to_o receive_v the_o holy_a scripture_n themselves_o otherwise_o than_o upon_o her_o authority_n the_o wickedness_n of_o this_o expose_v in_o two_o particular_n the_o allege_v of_o scripture_n for_o it_o show_v to_o be_v the_o gross_a absurdity_n their_o great_a text_n 1_o tim._n 3._o 15._o speak_v to_o her_o tyranny_n over_o man_n mind_n further_o show_v have_v now_o speak_v to_o all_o the_o false_a notion_n of_o christian_a liberty_n that_o i_o know_v of_o and_o discover_v the_o intolerable_a mischievousness_n of_o they_o as_o well_o as_o falsity_n i_o proceed_v to_o another_o inference_n from_o our_o notion_n thereof_o namely_o three_o that_o popery_n be_v a_o religion_n if_o i_o honour_v it_o not_o too_o much_o in_o call_v it_o so_o that_o be_v the_o great_a enemy_n in_o the_o whole_a world_n to_o christian_a liberty_n shall_v all_o the_o wicked_a wit_n in_o the_o world_n meet_v together_o to_o consult_v and_o complot_n how_o to_o banish_v out_o of_o it_o this_o liberty_n they_o can_v not_o devise_v more_o effectual_a mean_n for_o the_o do_v of_o it_o than_o those_o which_o be_v pitch_v upon_o by_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n and_o here_o we_o will_v show_v first_o that_o she_o rob_v those_o who_o subject_a themselves_o to_o she_o of_o that_o natural_a liberty_n which_o necessary_o belong_v to_o they_o as_o they_o be_v man_n or_o reasonable_a creature_n and_o much_o more_o second_o that_o she_o rob_v they_o of_o that_o liberty_n which_o it_o be_v the_o design_n of_o our_o saviour_n come_v into_o the_o world_n and_o of_o all_o he_o do_v and_o suffer_v here_o to_o instate_v we_o in_o first_o that_o she_o rob_v those_o who_o subject_a themselves_o to_o she_o of_o that_o natural_a liberty_n which_o necessary_o belong_v to_o they_o as_o man_n or_o reasonable_a creature_n there_o be_v no_o liberty_n so_o essential_a to_o humane_a nature_n or_o so_o much_o its_o inviolable_a right_n as_o that_o which_o consist_v in_o the_o free_a use_n of_o our_o understanding_n but_o a_o papist_n be_v miserable_o tie_v up_o and_o enslave_v here_o and_o that_o in_o those_o matter_n wherein_o it_o be_v of_o infinite_o the_o great_a importance_n and_o concernment_n to_o he_o that_o his_o mind_n shall_v be_v free_a namely_o in_o matter_n of_o religion_n which_o have_v such_o a_o necessary_a influence_n into_o the_o welfare_n of_o our_o soul_n and_o our_o eternal_a happiness_n but_o notwithstanding_o that_o injunction_n of_o s._n paul_n 1_o thes._n 5._o 21._o prove_v all_o thing_n hold_v fast_o that_o which_o be_v good_a and_o that_o of_o s._n john_n 1_o epist._n 4._o 1._o belove_a believe_v not_o every_o spirit_n but_o try_v the_o spirit_n whether_o they_o be_v of_o god_n etc._n etc._n this_o church_n deny_v to_o her_o child_n all_o judgement_n of_o discretion_n in_o point_n of_o religion_n at_o least_o except_o in_o this_o one_o point_n the_o choice_n of_o the_o church_n for_o their_o guide_n which_o have_v choose_v they_o must_v follow_v she_o blindfold_o all_o their_o life_n after_o they_o must_v be_v implicit_a believer_n and_o implicit_a chooser_n she_o will_v 〈◊〉_d and_o believe_v for_o they_o all_o theirâ—â—dgment_n â—â—dgment_z and_o faith_n must_v a_o church_n which_o not_o only_o give_v we_o free_a leave_n but_o likewise_o enjoin_v we_o to_o read_v the_o holy_a scripture_n and_o deprive_v we_o of_o no_o part_n of_o they_o we_o live_v in_o a_o church_n which_o require_v we_o to_o receive_v nothing_o as_o a_o article_n of_o faith_n upon_o her_o bare_a authority_n that_o assume_v nothing_o of_o infallibility_n to_o herself_o but_o free_o give_v we_o the_o liberty_n of_o try_v all_o thing_n that_o impose_v nothing_o upon_o our_o belief_n or_o practice_n as_o necessary_a to_o salvation_n but_o what_o be_v in_o the_o plain_a and_o most_o express_a term_n to_o be_v find_v in_o the_o bible_n that_o make_v the_o scripture_n a_o complete_a rule_n of_o faith_n and_o add_v not_o one_o syllable_n of_o her_o own_o to_o supply_v their_o defect_n that_o take_v no_o liberty_n in_o her_o constitution_n but_o such_o as_o she_o believe_v to_o be_v agreeable_a to_o the_o general_n apostolical_a rule_n of_o do_v all_o thing_n decent_o and_o in_o order_n and_o to_o edification_n and_o impose_v these_o not_o as_o of_o divine_a institution_n or_o as_o necessary_a in_o their_o own_o nature_n but_o only_o as_o expedient_a for_o the_o more_o solemn_a grave_a and_o decorous_a management_n of_o the_o public_a worship_n of_o god_n this_o be_v leave_v by_o christ_n and_o his_o apostle_n to_o the_o prudence_n of_o the_o governor_n of_o each_o particular_a church_n we_o live_v in_o a_o church_n which_o abominate_v the_o worship_n of_o god_n by_o image_n allow_v no_o prayer_n to_o saint_n or_o angel_n but_o only_o to_o the_o true_a god_n by_o the_o alone_a mediation_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ._n we_o live_v in_o a_o church_n which_o renounce_v all_o merit_n of_o good_a work_n and_o teach_v we_o to_o expect_v salvation_n only_o for_o the_o sake_n of_o jesus_n christ_n and_o through_o his_o righteousness_n but_o give_v not_o the_o least_o countenance_n to_o licentious_a practice_n or_o remissness_n in_o good_a work_n and_o teach_v the_o absolute_a necessity_n of_o purge_v ourselves_o by_o the_o assistance_n of_o the_o divine_a grace_n from_o all_o filthiness_n both_o of_o flesh_n and_o spirit_n in_o order_n to_o our_o be_v make_v capable_a of_o god_n complacential_a love_n here_o and_o glory_n hereafter_o last_o whereas_o i_o may_v be_v exceed_o large_a upon_o this_o subject_n we_o live_v in_o a_o church_n wherein_o we_o want_v no_o necessary_a help_n for_o the_o building_n we_o up_o in_o our_o most_o holy_a faith_n or_o our_o have_v the_o design_n of_o our_o saviour_n religion_n happy_o effect_v in_o we_o namely_o the_o reformation_n of_o our_o life_n and_o our_o be_v renew_a after_o the_o image_n of_o god_n which_o consist_v in_o righteousness_n and_o true_a holiness_n o_o that_o at_o length_n we_o can_v become_v more_o eflectual_o sensible_a of_o the_o bless_a privilege_n the_o divine_a goodness_n vouchsafe_v to_o we_o of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n lest_o we_o be_v make_v to_o prize_n they_o by_o the_o loss_n of_o they_o lest_o our_o general_a monstrous_a ingratitude_n and_o lamentable_a unprofitableness_n under_o they_o and_o the_o wantonness_n peevishness_n and_o causeless_o separation_n of_o multitude_n from_o the_o communion_n of_o this_o church_n provoke_v the_o divine_a majesty_n to_o put_v our_o neck_n once_o more_o under_o the_o iron_n yoke_n of_o those_o tyrant_n which_o make_v such_o vassal_n of_o our_o forefather_n if_o that_o dismal_a day_n shall_v again_o come_v as_o god_n grant_v it_o may_v not_o with_o what_o sorrow_n and_o grief_n of_o soul_n shall_v we_o reflect_v upon_o our_o neglect_v and_o despise_v such_o happy_a opportunity_n as_o we_o now_o enjoy_v what_o will_v we_o not_o then_o glad_o part_v with_o to_o regain_v they_o when_o we_o be_v deprive_v of_o they_o and_o o_o that_o our_o several_a divide_a party_n be_v capable_a of_o be_v persuade_v to_o consider_v sedate_o and_o serious_o before_o it_o be_v too_o late_a what_o their_o gain_n will_v be_v by_o the_o fall_n of_o our_o church_n when_o themselves_o and_o their_o religion_n lie_v bury_v together_o in_o her_o ruin_n chap._n xix_o the_o four_o inference_n that_o he_o only_o be_v a_o true_a christian_a that_o look_v upon_o himself_o as_o oblige_v to_o be_v no_o less_o watchful_a over_o his_o heart_n and_o the_o frame_n and_o temper_n of_o his_o mind_n than_o over_o his_o life_n and_o conversation_n i_o shall_v now_o return_v to_o more_o immediate_o practical_a discourse_n for_o what_o remain_v of_o this_o treatise_n which_o be_v far_o more_o please_a to_o myself_o than_o that_o i_o have_v be_v employ_v in_o for_o several_a of_o the_o past_a chapter_n as_o necessary_a and_o seasonable_a as_o that_o be_v also_o four_o from_o our_o notion_n of_o christian_a liberty_n this_o be_v another_o manifest_a inference_n viz._n that_o a_o true_a christian_a be_v one_o that_o look_v upon_o himself_o as_o oblige_v to_o be_v no_o less_o watchful_a over_o his_o heart_n than_o over_o his_o life_n and_o conversation_n to_o take_v as_o great_a care_n to_o cleanse_v the_o inside_n of_o the_o cup_n and_o platter_n to_o use_v our_o saviour_n expression_n as_o the_o outside_n to_o be_v as_o vigilant_a over_o his_o affection_n as_o over_o his_o outward_a behaviour_n to_o be_v as_o solicitous_a about_o purge_v himself_o from_o all_o immoderate_a love_n of_o the_o thing_n of_o this_o world_n as_o about_o procure_v they_o by_o warrantable_a and_o lawful_a mean_n the_o true_a christian_a make_v as_o much_o conscience_n of_o lust_a after_o a_o woman_n and_o cherish_v impure_a thought_n as_o he_o do_v of_o lascivious_a and_o wanton_a practice_n of_o harbour_v revenge_n in_o his_o breast_n and_o bear_v ill_a will_n to_o any_o as_o of_o repay_v injury_n with_o injury_n he_o need_v not_o to_o be_v make_v sensible_a that_o it_o be_v no_o less_o his_o duty_n to_o forgive_v and_o love_v his_o enemy_n than_o to_o forbear_v revile_v they_o or_o do_v evil_a to_o they_o that_o it_o be_v as_o indispensable_o necessary_a to_o be_v low_a in_o his_o own_o eye_n and_o to_o think_v mean_o of_o himself_o as_o to_o beware_v of_o a_o haughty_a and_o supercilious_a carriage_n towards_o other_o that_o he_o can_v more_o safe_o covet_v than_o he_o can_v steal_v his_o neighbour_n good_n that_o he_o be_v as_o much_o bind_v to_o bring_v his_o will_n into_o subjection_n to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n under_o the_o severe_a providence_n as_o to_o forbear_v murmur_a repine_v and_o charge_v of_o god_n foolish_o he_o who_o be_v a_o christian_n in_o deed_n as_o well_o as_o in_o name_n place_v religion_n in_o govern_v his_o own_o spirit_n no_o less_o than_o in_o any_o external_n performance_n or_o forbearance_n of_o what_o nature_n soever_o in_o put_v away_o from_o himself_o all_o wrath_n bitterness_n and_o sourness_n no_o less_o than_o in_o abstain_v from_o uncivil_a deportment_n towards_o his_o brethren_n this_o man_n do_v not_o think_v it_o more_o necessary_a to_o do_v good_a work_n than_o to_o do_v they_o from_o a_o good_a principle_n and_o he_o be_v as_o much_o concern_v about_o love_v of_o god_n as_o about_o do_v what_o he_o have_v command_v he_o and_o forbear_v what_o he_o have_v forbid_v he_o he_o no_o less_o endeavour_n to_o hate_n sin_n than_o not_o to_o commit_v it_o and_o to_o be_v in_o love_n
