believe_v or_o profess_v of_o error_n now_o if_o by_o practise_v a_o error_n be_v mean_v the_o do_v any_o thing_n which_o be_v contrary_a to_o god_n law_n such_o as_o pray_v to_o saint_n or_o worship_v the_o host_n or_o image_n to_o which_o and_o such_o like_a thing_n undoubted_o he_o have_v a_o eye_n in_o that_o expression_n i_o grant_v that_o it_o be_v a_o cause_n abundant_o sufficient_a to_o refuse_v the_o communion_n of_o any_o church_n if_o she_o require_v any_o such_o practice_n as_o a_o condition_n of_o it_o but_o than_o it_o must_v be_v show_v that_o some_o such_o practice_n be_v so_o require_v by_o our_o church_n or_o else_o this_o clause_n will_v be_v as_o little_a to_o the_o purpose_n as_o the_o former_a but_o if_o by_o practise_v a_o error_n be_v mean_v the_o do_n of_o a_o thing_n which_o be_v not_o sinful_a but_o yet_o be_v apprehend_v to_o be_v improper_a oâ—_n inconvenient_a and_o therefore_o may_v be_v account_v a_o error_n in_o point_n not_o oâ—_n lawfulness_n but_o of_o prudence_n decency_n or_o the_o like_a if_o any_o church_n require_v the_o practice_n only_o of_o such_o a_o error_n as_o this_o however_o it_o may_v be_v proper_a to_o desire_v and_o with_o a_o modest_a earnestness_n to_o press_v for_o a_o alteration_n in_o such_o thing_n for_o the_o better_a yet_o i_o can_v see_v how_o upon_o this_o ground_n it_o can_v be_v justify_v to_o renounce_v or_o refuse_v the_o communion_n of_o such_o a_o church_n but_o of_o this_o anon_o as_o to_o mr._n chillingworth_n proposal_n to_o the_o papist_n that_o he_o be_v ready_a to_o join_v with_o they_o in_o any_o such_o form_n of_o worship_v god_n as_o shall_v be_v whole_o take_v out_o of_o the_o scripture_n if_o the_o same_o be_v make_v to_o we_o i_o answer_v that_o if_o by_o a_o form_n of_o worship_n whole_o take_v out_o of_o the_o scripture_n be_v mean_v such_o a_o one_o every_o of_o who_o word_n and_o expression_n be_v immediate_o and_o in_o term_n contain_v in_o the_o scripture_n the_o thing_n be_v hardly_o practicable_a for_o as_o it_o be_v possible_a that_o the_o very_a word_n and_o phrase_n of_o scripture_n may_v be_v so_o join_v and_o put_v together_o as_o to_o wrest_v and_o pervert_v the_o sense_n and_o meaning_n thereof_o which_o may_v easy_o occasion_v new_a dispute_n so_o i_o believe_v will_v it_o be_v very_o difficult_a nor_o certain_o be_v it_o necessary_a for_o any_o church_n so_o to_o contrive_v all_o her_o form_n of_o worship_n as_o to_o use_v no_o word_n or_o action_n in_o any_o of_o they_o but_o what_o be_v express_o contain_v in_o or_o prescribe_v by_o the_o scripture_n but_o if_o such_o a_o form_n be_v mean_v which_o for_o substance_n be_v whole_o take_v from_o the_o scripture_n and_o have_v nothing_o either_o in_o its_o concomitant_a action_n or_o expression_n which_o be_v contrary_a to_o the_o scripture_n which_o i_o believe_v be_v all_o that_o learned_a man_n intend_v i_o accept_v the_o proposal_n and_o offer_v our_o liturgy_n as_o such_o a_o form_n of_o worship_n as_o undoubted_o mr._n chillingworth_n judge_v it_o to_o be_v or_o else_o he_o will_v not_o have_v conform_v to_o it_o and_o if_o than_o our_o author_n can_v show_v that_o there_o be_v something_o therein_o contain_v and_o thereby_o require_v which_o be_v contrary_a to_o the_o holy_a scripture_n he_o must_v i_o think_v by_o his_o own_o as_o he_o pretend_v be_v contrary_n to_o the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o for_o the_o proof_n of_o what_o he_o say_v he_o produce_v some_o text_n of_o scripture_n and_o then_o confirm_v all_o by_o the_o authority_n of_o my_o lord_n bishop_n of_o derry_n in_o his_o late_a discourse_n of_o humane_a invention_n etc._n etc._n in_o that_o paragraph_n of_o my_o address_n now_o under_o consideration_n i_o have_v call_v those_o rite_n and_o ceremony_n which_o by_o authority_n be_v appoint_v to_o be_v use_v by_o the_o name_n of_o circumstance_n of_o god_n worship_n and_o as_o such_o asserted_a the_o lawfulness_n of_o they_o now_o whereas_o he_o will_v prove_v the_o unlawfulness_n of_o these_o thing_n as_o be_v require_v not_o as_o circumstance_n but_o as_o part_n and_o mean_n of_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n he_o ought_v very_o clear_o and_o distinct_o to_o have_v tell_v we_o what_o he_o mean_v by_o a_o circumstance_n what_o by_o a_o part_n and_o what_o by_o the_o mean_n of_o worship_n and_o how_o these_o be_v distinguish_v one_o from_o another_o for_o as_o long_o as_o these_o term_n in_o which_o he_o seem_v to_o place_v the_o knot_n of_o the_o controversy_n remain_v obscure_a it_o be_v not_o possible_a to_o clear_v the_o dispute_n or_o right_o to_o apply_v the_o proof_n which_o he_o bring_v and_o yet_o without_o any_o explication_n oâ—_n these_o term_n or_o show_v wherein_o the_o thing_n signify_v by_o they_o do_v differ_v one_o from_o another_o he_o proceed_v to_o prove_v pag._n 102_o that_o our_o rite_n and_o ceremony_n be_v with_o we_o both_o part_n and_o mean_n of_o god_n worship_n but_o that_o we_o may_v not_o be_v like_o man_n who_o be_v scuffle_v in_o the_o dark_a and_o not_o distinct_o know_v what_o it_o be_v we_o contend_v about_o i_o must_v as_o i_o proceed_v endeavour_v to_o do_v what_o he_o have_v think_v fit_a to_o leave_v undo_v i_o mean_v to_o state_n the_o signification_n of_o these_o word_n that_o thereby_o we_o may_v know_v the_o difference_n of_o the_o thing_n one_o from_o another_o it_o be_v then_o premise_v what_o all_o i_o suppose_v will_v grant_v that_o the_o true_a worship_n of_o god_n consist_v in_o those_o thing_n and_o in_o those_o only_a which_o he_o himself_o have_v command_v that_o and_o nothing_o else_o but_o that_o be_v proper_o to_o be_v call_v a_o part_n of_o any_o thing_n without_o which_o the_o thing_n will_v be_v in_o itself_o imperfect_a and_o defective_a thus_o every_o limb_n of_o a_o man_n be_v a_o part_n of_o he_o because_o the_o want_n of_o any_o of_o they_o will_v be_v a_o defect_n in_o the_o man_n himself_o but_o his_o garment_n though_o a_o decent_a ornament_n be_v yet_o no_o part_n of_o he_o because_o if_o he_o be_v strip_v stark_o naked_a or_o clothe_v in_o a_o undecent_a garb_n though_o this_o may_v perhaps_o expose_v he_o to_o the_o scorn_n of_o some_o man_n yet_o will_v he_o in_o himself_o be_v never_o the_o less_o a_o perfect_a and_o complete_a man_n upon_o that_o account_n thus_o also_o prayer_n thanksgiving_n confession_n the_o susception_n of_o baptism_n and_o the_o receive_v the_o lord's-supper_n be_v each_o of_o they_o part_n of_o god_n worship_n because_o he_o who_o omit_v any_o one_o of_o they_o in_o its_o proper_a season_n thereby_o render_v his_o worship_n in_o itself_o defective_a and_o imperfect_a but_o the_o outward_a mode_n or_o ceremony_n which_o may_v be_v annex_v to_o this_o worship_n or_o any_o part_n of_o it_o be_v not_o themselves_o any_o part_n of_o the_o worship_n although_o they_o may_v be_v a_o decent_a ornament_n of_o it_o because_o the_o absence_n of_o they_o although_o it_o may_v perhaps_o in_o some_o man_n eye_n render_v the_o worship_n mean_v and_o contemptible_a yet_o will_v not_o make_v it_o in_o itself_o to_o be_v ever_o the_o less_o and_o the_o celebration_n of_o baptism_n and_o the_o lord_n supper_n without_o omit_v any_o thing_n which_o be_v of_o divine_a institution_n and_o man_n be_v teach_v and_o urge_v thus_o to_o fear_n and_o worship_n god_n because_o god_n himself_o have_v command_v they_o so_o to_o do_v and_o the_o law_n of_o the_o land_n which_o may_v be_v term_v the_o commandment_n of_o alan_n interpose_v no_o
