to_o their_o danger_n and_o comfort_n in_o particular_a and_o these_o particular_n he_o set_v down_o before_o we_o in_o five_o several_a branch_n or_o rank_n the_o first_o rank_n of_o danger_n &_o comfort_n be_v of_o life_n and_o death_n for_o i_o be_o sure_a that_o neither_o death_n nor_o life_n the_o second_o rank_n be_v angel_n ruler_n and_o power_n the_o three_o rank_n be_v thing_n present_a and_o thing_n to_o come_v the_o four_o rank_n be_v height_n and_o depth_n the_o five_o and_o last_o rank_n be_v as_o it_o be_v a_o extent_n of_o his_o speech_n to_o all_o thing_n that_o can_v be_v imagine_v nor_o any_o other_o creature_n as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v if_o i_o have_v omit_v any_o other_o creature_n in_o the_o world_n in_o these_o particular_n yet_o they_o shall_v not_o separate_v us._n we_o have_v speak_v already_o of_o the_o first_o rank_n death_n and_o life_n now_o we_o be_v to_o speak_v of_o the_o second_o rank_n of_o danger_n and_o of_o our_o comfort_n against_o they_o nor_o angel_n ruler_n and_o power_n wherein_o we_o see_v there_o be_v three_o sort_n of_o danger_n angel_n ruler_n power_n in_o this_o second_o rank_n the_o apostle_n climb_v up_o a_o high_a strain_n than_o before_o for_o here_o he_o specify_v the_o most_o mighty_a and_o principal_a active_a worker_n that_o be_v in_o the_o world_n under_o god_n that_o either_o have_v or_o may_v have_v any_o hand_n in_o the_o endanger_n of_o our_o estate_n life_n and_o death_n be_v but_o certain_a state_n and_o condition_n wherein_o we_o be_v subject_a to_o certain_a danger_n but_o angel_n ruler_n and_o power_n these_o be_v certain_a chief_a live_a agent_n which_o do_v or_o may_v endanger_v we_o either_o by_o life_n or_o death_n for_o the_o meaning_n of_o these_o three_o word_n i_o confess_v that_o there_o be_v great_a hardness_n in_o they_o and_o great_a difficulty_n among_o interpreter_n about_o they_o i_o will_v not_o trouble_v you_o with_o many_o exposition_n general_o the_o word_n be_v expound_v altogether_o of_o angel_n and_o nothing_o else_o but_o herein_o some_o speak_v more_o bold_o some_o more_o modest_o they_o that_o speak_v more_o bold_o take_v it_o thus_o by_o angel_n they_o understand_v the_o whole_a army_n of_o god_n angel_n in_o general_a and_o by_o ruler_n and_o power_n they_o understand_v certain_a distinct_a order_n of_o angel_n one_o above_o another_o but_o this_o though_o it_o be_v the_o judgement_n of_o many_o of_o the_o learned_a yet_o it_o be_v a_o mere_a conjecture_n for_o there_o be_v no_o certainty_n set_v down_o in_o god_n word_n what_o be_v the_o distinct_a order_n of_o angel_n and_o for_o a_o man_n to_o take_v upon_o he_o to_o speak_v of_o such_o high_a mystery_n as_o these_o be_v without_o warrant_n from_o god_n word_n be_v great_a presumption_n they_o that_o speak_v more_o modest_o do_v understand_v by_o all_o these_o three_o word_n angel_n ruler_n and_o power_n one_o and_o the_o same_o thing_n that_o be_v all_o the_o angel_n indifferent_o but_o why_o do_v the_o apostle_n here_o give_v they_o several_a name_n they_o answer_v that_o he_o do_v it_o in_o three_o several_a respect_n they_o be_v call_v angel_n in_o respect_n of_o their_o office_n they_o be_v messenger_n second_o they_o be_v call_v ruler_n in_o respect_n of_o the_o excellency_n of_o their_o nature_n and_o power_n in_o respect_n of_o their_o mightiness_n and_o strength_n this_o exposition_n come_v near_o the_o apostle_n meaning_n and_o it_o contain_v nothing_o in_o it_o against_o the_o rule_n of_o faith_n nor_o against_o the_o use_n of_o the_o word_n nor_o against_o the_o drift_n and_o scope_n of_o the_o place_n etc._n etc._n yet_o it_o come_v short_a of_o the_o apostle_n strain_n and_o do_v not_o reach_v the_o full_a meaning_n of_o the_o place_n for_o the_o apostle_n here_o in_o the_o height_n of_o his_o spirit_n make_v a_o general_a challenge_n against_o all_o live_a mighty_a worker_n in_o the_o world_n under_o god_n that_o they_o shall_v never_o impeach_v the_o safety_n of_o god_n child_n in_o the_o state_n of_o grace_n therefore_o the_o word_n must_v be_v expound_v that_o they_o may_v comprehend_v all_o such_o agent_n whatsoever_o now_o there_o be_v other_o mighty_a live_a worker_n beside_o the_o angel_n therefore_o save_v the_o judgement_n of_o the_o better_a learned_a we_o expound_v it_o thus_o by_o angel_n we_o understand_v all_o the_o angel_n that_o be_v as_o well_o those_o that_o stand_v as_o those_o that_o be_v fall_v as_o well_o good_a as_o bad_a for_o so_o the_o word_n natural_o signify_v for_o when_o the_o scripture_n speak_v of_o good_a angel_n only_o it_o call_v they_o holy_a angel_n elect_a angel_n mighty_a angel_n the_o angel_n of_o god_n etc._n etc._n but_o here_o it_o speak_v of_o angel_n in_o general_a and_o therefore_o we_o be_v to_o understand_v it_o both_o of_o good_a and_o bad_a by_o ruler_n or_o principality_n we_o understand_v earthly_a governor_n the_o great_a and_o mighty_a monarch_n and_o magistrate_n of_o the_o earth_n king_n emperor_n and_o the_o like_a for_o so_o this_o word_n in_o the_o original_n be_v express_o confine_v to_o this_o sense_n in_o two_o place_n of_o the_o scripture_n luke_n 12.11_o and_o when_o they_o bring_v you_o unto_o the_o synagogue_n and_o unto_o ruler_n etc._n etc._n and_o titus_n 3.1_o put_v they_o in_o mind_n that_o they_o be_v subject_a to_o principality_n or_o ruler_n it_o be_v true_a that_o
many_o respect_n i_o have_v be_v move_v to_o dedicate_v to_o you_o mr._n doctor_n and_o to_o you_o the_o rest_n of_o my_o love_a friend_n for_o three_o reason_n first_o because_o i_o conceive_v that_o nor_o height_n nor_o depth_n nor_o any_o other_o creature_n shall_v be_v able_a to_o separate_v we_o from_o the_o love_n of_o god_n which_o be_v in_o christ_n jesus_n our_o lord_n for_o i_o be_o persuade_v or_o i_o be_o sure_a etc._n etc._n it_o be_v the_o ordinary_a portion_n of_o all_o god_n child_n to_o suffer_v many_o affliction_n in_o this_o life_n it_o be_v therefore_o the_o ordinary_a practice_n of_o the_o apostle_n to_o minister_v comfort_n and_o consolation_n to_o all_o god_n child_n against_o all_o their_o suffering_n thus_o the_o apostle_n here_o in_o this_o place_n to_o comfort_v himself_o and_o the_o faithful_a against_o all_o affliction_n propound_v two_o consideration_n first_o what_o the_o affliction_n be_v that_o may_v befall_v god_n child_n second_o what_o the_o faithful_a separation_n presuppose_v conjunction_n when_o the_o apostle_n say_v nothing_o can_v separate_v we_o from_o god_n it_o be_v necessary_o employ_v that_o there_o be_v a_o conjunction_n betwixt_o god_n and_o we_o for_o thing_n that_o be_v never_o join_v together_o can_v be_v say_v to_o be_v separate_v one_o from_o the_o other_o then_o second_o he_o express_v the_o bond_n of_o this_o conjunction_n and_o that_o be_v the_o love_n of_o god_n three_o he_o show_v the_o ground_n and_o foundation_n of_o this_o bond_n and_o conjunction_n and_o that_o be_v christ_n jesus_n our_o lord_n four_o he_o declare_v a_o special_a interest_n that_o the_o faithful_a have_v in_o christ_n jesus_n by_o a_o note_n of_o near_a and_o special_a reference_n betwixt_o christ_n and_o the_o faithful_a our_o lord_n five_o the_o apostle_n avouch_v the_o certainty_n of_o the_o safety_n of_o god_n child_n amid_o all_o danger_n nothing_o can_v separate_v we_o and_o this_o he_o enlarge_v in_o many_o particular_a danger_n even_o the_o great_a that_o can_v be_v imagine_v death_n life_n etc._n etc._n six_o he_o protest_v his_o confidence_n which_o he_o have_v concern_v this_o their_o safety_n as_o be_v the_o undoubted_a truth_n of_o god_n i_o be_o persuade_v or_o i_o be_o sure_a etc._n etc._n seaventh_o he_o bear_v up_o himself_o bold_o upon_o this_o assurance_n against_o all_o affliction_n and_o danger_n that_o ever_o do_v or_o ever_o can_v befall_v he_o for_o this_o be_v the_o main_a drift_n of_o this_o whole_a discourse_n be_v propound_v by_o way_n of_o a_o reason_n for_o i_o be_o of_o implication_n the_o doctrine_n be_v this_o all_o true_a believer_n be_v join_v to_o god_n in_o christ_n and_o have_v a_o gracious_a and_o a_o holy_a and_o spiritual_a communion_n and_o fellowship_n with_o he_o the_o point_n be_v but_o employ_v here_o and_o therefore_o i_o must_v not_o be_v very_o large_a in_o it_o but_o yet_o because_o it_o be_v so_o employ_v as_o be_v one_o a_o bare_a and_o empty_a sound_n but_o usual_o they_o be_v full_a of_o matter_n and_o substance_n and_o sure_o that_o which_o the_o apostle_n here_o mention_n be_v so_o full_a of_o matter_n and_o these_o mystery_n neither_o death_n nor_o life_n nor_o angel_n etc._n etc._n shall_v separate_v us._n first_o of_o the_o first_o two_o particular_n death_n and_o life_n by_o life_n and_o by_o death_n we_o be_v to_o understand_v not_o only_o the_o thing_n themselves_o life_n and_o death_n but_o all_o occurrence_n and_o passage_n our_o whole_a estate_n in_o life_n and_o death_n we_o be_v then_o to_o for_o explication_n first_o explication_n explication_n consider_v the_o danger_n that_o be_v offer_v unto_o we_o in_o life_n and_o death_n second_o let_v we_o consider_v how_o far_o all_o true_a believer_n be_v in_o safety_n against_o they_o and_o first_o we_o will_v begin_v with_o the_o danger_n of_o life_n life_n two_o danger_n of_o life_n life_n endanger_v we_o two_o way_n either_o on_o the_o right_a hand_n when_o we_o be_v too_o much_o in_o love_n with_o it_o or_o on_o the_o left_a hand_n when_o we_o be_v too_o much_o out_o of_o love_n with_o it_o on_o the_o right_a hand_n life_n be_v in_o itself_o very_o sweet_a and_o much_o desire_v and_o delight_v in_o but_o especial_o when_o it_o be_v second_v with_o outward_a comfort_n as_o health_n friend_n ease_n good_n honour_n etc._n etc._n then_o it_o be_v much_o more_o sweet_a and_o desire_a yea_o but_o god_n child_n must_v know_v that_o they_o must_v deny_v themselves_o &_o forsake_v their_o own_o will_n they_o must_v be_v crucify_v to_o the_o whole_a world_n &_o the_o world_n must_v be_v crucify_v to_o they_o yea_o and_o happy_o they_o must_v be_v call_v out_o to_o loose_v their_o life_n for_o christ_n and_o for_o his_o gospel_n now_o here_o be_v the_o danger_n whether_o they_o will_v loose_v their_o sweet_a life_n or_o their_o sweet_a soul_n many_o of_o god_n dear_a child_n have_v be_v put_v to_o great_a plunge_n in_o this_o kind_n peter_n himself_o though_o he_o love_v his_o master_n dear_o and_o profess_v that_o he_o will_v never_o forsake_v he_o but_o resolve_v to_o die_v with_o he_o yet_o when_o it_o come_v to_o the_o trial_n for_o the_o brunt_n of_o the_o proof_n that_o either_o he_o must_v forsake_v his_o master_n or_o his_o life_n peter_n have_v rather_o forsake_v his_o best_a master_n than_o his_o sweet_a life_n when_o such_o tall_a cedar_n shrink_v in_o such_o a_o storm_n alas_o poor_a soul_n what_o shall_v become_v of_o we_o the_o low_a shrub_n again_o life_n endanger_v on_o the_o left_a hand_n by_o cross_n whereby_o we_o be_v too_o much_o out_o of_o love_n with_o it_o after_o a_o time_n of_o well_o fare_v come_v loss_n want_n discontentment_n sickness_n pain_n infirmity_n temptation_n persecution_n terror_n of_o conscience_n they_o come_v what_o be_v we_o to_o do_v in_o this_o case_n here_o be_v great_a danger_n towards_o we_o our_o heart_n droop_v our_o spirit_n be_v die_v we_o be_v a_o burden_n to_o ourselves_o we_o be_v weary_a of_o our_o life_n here_o be_v our_o danger_n now_o whether_o be_v we_o content_v patient_o to_o endure_v this_o die_a must_v die_v and_o give_v up_o the_o ghost_n and_o leave_v all_o the_o world_n and_o forsake_v this_o present_a light_n that_o shine_v about_o we_o when_o the_o body_n and_o soul_n must_v part_v that_o have_v be_v all_o this_o while_n love_v friend_n together_o the_o body_n to_o return_v to_o the_o dust_n as_o it_o be_v and_o the_o soul_n to_o god_n that_o give_v it_o when_o we_o think_v with_o ourselves_o of_o the_o bitterness_n and_o sourness_n and_o pang_n of_o death_n and_o of_o our_o particular_a judgement_n in_o death_n and_o the_o general_a judgement_n that_o shall_v come_v the_o first_o what_o good_a angel_n be_v good_a angel_n be_v certain_a spiritual_a substance_n that_o keep_v their_o first_o estate_n and_o be_v immediate_a and_o continual_a attendant_n before_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n that_o they_o be_v substance_n their_o action_n prove_v it_o they_o rejoice_v worship_n god_n pass_v from_o place_n to_o place_n and_o perform_v sundry_a action_n and_o suppose_v that_o they_o shall_v endanger_v god_n child_n yet_o they_o can_v never_o separate_v they_o from_o the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o this_o be_v very_o observable_a in_o the_o whole_a tenor_n of_o the_o apostle_n speech_n that_o all_o the_o danger_n which_o he_o mention_n be_v put_v down_o by_o way_n of_o supposition_n but_o safety_n and_o the_o comfort_n against_o they_o be_v set_v down_o positive_o and_o direct_o as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v suppose_v that_o the_o good_a angel_n shall_v endanger_v we_o yet_o certain_o they_o shall_v never_o separate_v we_o from_o the_o love_n of_o god_n but_o especial_o it_o be_v to_o be_v mark_v in_o this_o particular_a concern_v the_o good_a angel_n for_o this_o be_v mere_o a_o supposal_n that_o the_o good_a angel_n of_o themselves_o shall_v hurt_v us._n but_o why_o then_o do_v the_o apostle_n mention_v any_o such_o matter_n here_o i_o answer_v for_o the_o further_a confirmation_n of_o true_a believer_n in_o the_o assurance_n of_o god_n love_n i_o will_v clear_v this_o place_n by_o another_o place_n of_o the_o apostle_n in_o the_o very_a like_o kind_n gal._n 1.6_o if_o a_o angel_n from_o heaven_n preach_v any_o other_o gospel_n etc._n etc._n will_v any_o man_n conclude_v from_o hence_o that_o therefore_o a_o angel_n from_o heaven_n may_v or_o can_v preach_v any_o other_o gospel_n than_o paul_n have_v preach_v no_o but_o the_o apostle_n speak_v it_o by_o way_n of_o supposal_n only_o and_o supposall_n do_v not_o affirm_v any_o thing_n in_o be_v yea_o but_o why_o do_v the_o apostle_n then_o here_o use_v the_o name_n of_o a_o holy_a angel_n in_o this_o case_n i_o answer_v he_o have_v good_a reason_n for_o it_o that_o he_o may_v confirm_v they_o the_o better_a in_o the_o truth_n which_o he_o have_v teach_v namely_o that_o we_o must_v be_v so_o steadfast_o settle_v in_o the_o faith_n of_o the_o gospel_n of_o christ_n that_o if_o a_o angel_n from_o heaven_n shall_v teach_v any_o other_o doctrine_n which_o be_v a_o thing_n impossible_a yet_o if_o he_o shall_v we_o must_v defy_v he_o and_o hold_v he_o accurse_v and_o so_o the_o apostle_n in_o this_o place_n make_v the_o estate_n of_o god_n child_n so_o sure_a and_o firm_a that_o if_o the_o good_a angel_n shall_v set_v themselves_o against_o they_o to_o separate_v they_o from_o the_o love_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n jesus_n which_o be_v impossible_a but_o if_o they_o shall_v yet_o they_o can_v not_o do_v it_o second_o i_o answer_v that_o howsoever_o they_o do_v not_o of_o themselves_o
