true_a sense_n of_o scripture_n but_o from_o the_o authority_n and_o infallible_a declaration_n of_o that_o church_n and_o if_o so_o than_o the_o infallibility_n of_o the_o church_n must_v be_v first_o know_v and_o prove_v before_o we_o can_v either_o know_v the_o scripture_n or_o the_o sense_n of_o they_o and_o yet_o till_o we_o know_v the_o scripture_n and_o the_o sense_n of_o they_o nothing_o can_v be_v prove_v by_o they_o now_o to_o pretend_v to_o prove_v the_o infallibility_n of_o their_o church_n by_o scripture_n and_o at_o the_o same_o time_n to_o declare_v that_o which_o be_v the_o true_a book_n of_o scripture_n and_o what_o be_v the_o true_a sense_n of_o they_o can_v only_o be_v prove_v by_o the_o infallible_a authority_n of_o their_o church_n be_v a_o plain_a and_o pretend_v to_o the_o thing_n be_v not_o to_o be_v prove_v at_o all_o yes_o they_o say_v by_o the_o note_n and_o mark_n of_o the_o true_a church_n but_o what_o those_o mark_n be_v must_v either_o be_v know_v from_o scripture_n or_o some_o other_o divine_a revelation_n and_o then_o the_o same_o difficulty_n return_v beside_o that_o one_o of_o the_o most_o essential_a mark_n of_o the_o true_a church_n must_v be_v the_o profession_n of_o the_o true_a faith_n and_o than_o it_o must_v first_o be_v know_v which_o be_v the_o true_a faith_n before_o we_o can_v know_v which_o be_v the_o true_a church_n and_o yet_o they_o say_v that_o no_o man_n can_v learn_v the_o true_a faith_n but_o from_o the_o true_a church_n and_o this_o run_v they_o unavoidable_o into_o another_o circle_n as_o shameful_a as_o the_o other_o so_o that_o which_o way_n soever_o they_o go_v to_o prove_v a_o infallible_a church_n they_o be_v shut_v up_o in_o a_o plain_a circle_n and_o must_v either_o prove_v the_o scripture_n by_o the_o church_n and_o the_o church_n by_o the_o scripture_n or_o the_o true_a church_n by_o the_o true_a faith_n and_o the_o true_a faith_n by_o the_o true_a church_n second_o this_o provision_n and_o security_n which_o i_o have_v mention_v be_v more_o humane_a better_o accommodate_v and_o suit_v to_o the_o nature_n of_o man_n because_o it_o do_v not_o suppose_v and_o need_v a_o stand_n and_o perpetual_a miracle_n as_o the_o other_o way_n of_o a_o infallible_a church_n do_v all_o inspiration_n be_v supernatural_a and_o miraculous_a and_o this_o infallible_a assistance_n which_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n claim_v to_o herself_o must_v either_o be_v such_o as_o the_o apostle_n have_v which_o be_v by_o immediate_a inspiration_n or_o something_o equal_a to_o it_o and_o alike_o supernatural_a but_o god_n do_v not_o work_v miracle_n without_o need_n or_o continue_v they_o when_o there_o be_v no_o occasion_n for_o they_o when_o god_n deliver_v the_o law_n to_o the_o people_n of_o israel_n it_o be_v accompany_v with_o miracle_n and_o the_o prophet_n which_o he_o send_v to_o they_o from_o time_n to_o time_n have_v a_o immediate_a inspiration_n but_o their_o supreme_a judicature_n or_o their_o general_n council_n which_o they_o call_v the_o sanhedrim_n be_v not_o infallible_o assist_v in_o the_o expound_v of_o the_o law_n when_o doubt_n and_o difficulty_n arise_v about_o it_o no_o nor_o in_o judge_v of_o true_a and_o false_a prophet_n but_o they_o determine_v this_o and_o all_o other_o emergent_a cause_n by_o the_o stand_a
saviour_n here_o warn_v his_o hearer_n against_o and_o that_o be_v covetousness_n take_v heed_n and_o beware_v of_o covetousness_n three_o the_o reason_n of_o this_o caution_n because_o a_o man_n life_n consist_v not_o in_o the_o abundance_n of_o the_o thing_n which_o he_o possess_v humane_a life_n be_v sustain_v by_o a_o little_a and_o therefore_o abundance_n be_v not_o necessary_a either_o double_v as_o if_o the_o matter_n be_v of_o so_o much_o concernment_n that_o no_o caution_n about_o it_o can_v be_v too_o much_o to_o signify_v to_o we_o both_o the_o great_a danger_n of_o this_o sin_n of_o covetousness_n and_o the_o great_a care_n man_n ought_v to_o use_v to_o preserve_v themselves_o from_o it_o first_o the_o great_a danger_n of_o this_o sin_n how_o apt_a we_o be_v to_o fall_v into_o this_o vice_n and_o of_o how_o pernicious_a a_o consequence_n it_o be_v to_o those_o in_o who_o it_o reign_v 1._o how_o apt_a we_o be_v to_o fall_v into_o this_o vice_n and_o except_v those_o vice_n which_o be_v immediate_o found_v in_o a_o man_n natural_a temper_n and_o constitution_n there_o be_v none_o that_o man_n have_v a_o more_o universal_a propension_n to_o than_o this_o of_o covetousness_n for_o there_o be_v two_o thing_n which_o human_a nature_n do_v more_o especial_o desire_v to_o be_v secure_v against_o which_o be_v want_n and_o contempt_n and_o riches_n seem_v to_o be_v a_o certain_a remedy_n against_o both_o these_o evil_n and_o because_o man_n think_v they_o can_v never_o be_v sufficient_o secure_v against_o these_o therefore_o their_o desire_n of_o riches_n grow_v endless_a and_o insatiable_a so_o that_o unless_o man_n be_v very_o jealous_a and_o watchful_a over_o themselves_o this_o desire_n will_v grow_v upon_o they_o and_o enlarge_v itself_o the_o thing_n of_o this_o life_n because_o of_o the_o great_a danger_n and_o mischief_n of_o a_o covetous_a mind_n have_v food_n and_o raiment_n let_v we_o be_v therewith_o content_a but_o they_o that_o will_v be_v rich_a that_o be_v they_o that_o be_v bend_v and_o resolve_v upon_o be_v rich_a fall_v into_o temptation_n and_o a_o snare_n and_o into_o many_o foolish_a and_o hurtful_a lust_n which_o drown_v man_n in_o destruction_n and_o perdition_n for_o the_o love_n of_o money_n be_v the_o root_n of_o all_o evil._n but_o this_o i_o shall_v speak_v more_o full_o to_o when_o i_o come_v to_o show_v the_o great_a evil_a and_o unreasonableness_n of_o this_o vice_n second_o this_o earnest_a kind_n of_o caution_n as_o it_o signify_v the_o great_a danger_n of_o this_o sin_n of_o covetousness_n so_o likewise_o the_o great_a care_n that_o man_n ought_v to_o use_v to_o preserve_v themselves_o from_o it_o for_o the_o great_a the_o danger_n be_v in_o any_o kind_n so_o much_o the_o great_a care_n shall_v be_v use_v for_o the_o avoid_n of_o it_o man_n be_v not_o so_o solicitous_o concern_v to_o defend_v themselves_o against_o a_o slight_a mischief_n but_o when_o a_o terrible_a one_o threaten_v we_o we_o shall_v be_v continual_o upon_o our_o guard_n against_o it_o and_o summon_v all_o our_o strength_n and_o forâ—e_n to_o resist_v it_o thus_o much_o for_o the_o manner_n of_o the_o caution_n i_o proceed_v to_o the_o second_o thing_n to_o be_v consider_v in_o the_o text_n viz._n the_o matter_n of_o the_o caution_n or_o the_o vice_n which_o our_o saviour_n here_o warn_v his_o hearer_n against_o and_o that_o be_v covetousness_n take_v heed_n and_o beware_v of_o covetousness_n and_o in_o speak_v of_o this_o i_o shall_v consider_v these_o two_o thing_n 1._o wherein_o the_o nature_n of_o this_o vice_n consist_v 2._o i_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o show_v the_o great_a evil_a and_o unreasonableness_n of_o it_o i_o shall_v be_v large_a in_o both_o 1._o for_o the_o nature_n of_o this_o vice_n of_o covetousness_n the_o short_a description_n that_o i_o can_v give_v of_o it_o be_v this_o that_o it_o be_v a_o inordinate_a desire_n and_o love_n of_o riches_n but_o when_o this_o desire_n and_o love_n be_v inordinate_a be_v not_o so_o easy_a to_o be_v determine_v and_o therefore_o that_o we_o may_v the_o better_o understand_v what_o this_o sin_n of_o covetousness_n be_v which_o our_o saviour_n do_v so_o earnest_o caution_n against_o it_o will_v be_v requisite_a to_o consider_v more_o particular_o wherein_o the_o vice_n and_o fault_n of_o it_o do_v consist_v that_o whilst_o we_o be_v be_v speak_v against_o covetousness_n we_o may_v not_o under_o that_o general_n word_n condemn_v any_o thing_n that_o be_v commendable_a or_o lawful_a to_o the_o not_o condemn_v under_o this_o name_n of_o covetousness_n either_o in_o scripture_n or_o according_a to_o right_a reason_n and_o second_o what_o be_v condemn_v by_o either_o of_o these_o as_o a_o plain_a instance_n oâ—_n branch_n of_o this_o sin_n 1._o what_o thing_n be_v not_o condemn_v under_o the_o name_n of_o covetousness_n either_o in_o scripture_n or_o according_a to_o right_a reason_n which_o yet_o have_v some_o appearance_n of_o it_o namely_o these_o three_o thing_n 1._o not_o a_o provident_a care_n about_o the_o thing_n of_o this_o present_a life_n 2._o not_o a_o regular_a industry_n and_o diligence_n for_o the_o obtain_n of_o they_o nor_o 3_o every_o degree_n of_o love_n and_o affection_n to_o they_o i_o mention_v these_o three_o because_o they_o may_v all_o seem_v to_o be_v condemn_v by_o scripture_n as_o part_n or_o degree_n of_o this_o vice_n but_o real_o be_v not_o i._n not_o a_o provident_a care_n about_o the_o thing_n of_o this_o present_a life_n this_o indeed_o seem_v to_o be_v condemn_v in_o scripture_n as_o a_o branch_n of_o covetousness_n namely_o in_o our_o saviour_n sermon_n upon_o the_o mount_n mat._n 6._o 25._o take_v no_o thought_n for_o your_o life_n what_o you_o shall_v eat_v or_o what_o you_o shall_v drink_v nor_o yet_o for_o your_o body_n what_o you_o shall_v put_v on_o here_o our_o saviour_n seem_v to_o forbid_v all_o care_n even_o about_o the_o necessary_n of_o life_n meat_n and_o drink_v and_o clothing_n much_o more_o about_o the_o delight_n and_o conveniency_n of_o it_o but_o this_o be_v not_o absolute_o and_o in_o ordinary_a case_n intend_v by_o our_o saviour_n to_o be_v condemn_v as_o i_o shall_v show_v by_o and_o by_o under_o the_o next_o head_n second_o neither_o be_v a_o regular_a industry_n and_o diligence_n for_o the_o obtain_n of_o these_o thing_n condemn_v in_o scripture_n though_o this_o also_o seem_v to_o be_v prohibit_v by_o our_o saviour_n in_o the_o same_o chapter_n ver_fw-la 26._o behold_v the_o fowl_n of_o the_o air_n for_o they_o sow_v not_o neither_o do_v they_o reap_v nor_o gather_v into_o barn_n yet_o your_o heavenly_a father_n feed_v they_o and_o ver_fw-la 28._o why_o take_v you_o think_v for_o raiment_n consider_v the_o lily_n of_o the_o field_n how_o they_o grow_v they_o toil_v not_o neither_o do_v they_o spin_v in_o which_o word_n our_o saviour_n seem_v to_o intimate_v that_o we_o ought_v to_o depend_v upon_o the_o providence_n of_o god_n for_o food_n and_o raiment_n and_o to_o use_v no_o more_o industry_n for_o the_o obtain_n of_o they_o that_o the_o fowl_n of_o the_o air_n do_v or_o the_o lily_n of_o the_o field_n and_o the_o same_o may_v seem_v to_o be_v collect_v out_o of_o this_o chapter_n of_o st._n luke_n for_o after_o our_o saviour_n have_v in_o my_o text_n caution_v they_o against_o covetousness_n and_o speak_v to_o they_o a_o parable_n to_o that_o purpose_n of_o a_o rich_a man_n who_o enlarge_v his_o barn_n and_o lay_v up_o good_n for_o many_o year_n he_o infer_v from_o thence_o ver_fw-la 22._o that_o man_n shall_v take_v no_o thought_n for_o the_o thing_n of_o this_o life_n
elsewhere_o express_o make_v it_o the_o condition_n of_o our_o eternal_a salvation_n heb._n 5._o 9_o christ_n be_v there_o say_v to_o be_v the_o author_n of_o eternal_a salvation_n to_o they_o that_o obey_v he_o thereby_o imply_v that_o none_o shall_v be_v save_v by_o christ_n but_o those_o that_o obey_v the_o gospel_n heb._n 12._o 14._o follow_v holiness_n without_o which_o no_o man_n shall_v see_v the_o lord_n rom._n 2._o 7_o 8_o 9_o to_o they_o who_o by_o patient_a continuance_n in_o well_o do_v seek_v for_o glory_n and_o honour_n and_o immortality_n god_n will_v give_v eternal_a life_n but_o to_o they_o who_o be_v contentious_a and_o obey_v not_o the_o truth_n that_o be_v the_o gospel_n but_o obey_v unrighteousness_n indignation_n and_o wrath_n tribulation_n and_o anguish_n upon_o every_o soul_n of_o man_n that_o do_v evil._n i_o can_v well_o imagine_v what_o can_v reasonable_o be_v answer_v to_o such_o plain_a text_n but_o i_o will_v tell_v you_o what_o be_v common_o answer_v namely_o that_o god_n give_v the_o condition_n which_o he_o require_v and_o therefore_o though_o these_o promise_v run_v in_o a_o conditional_a form_n yet_o in_o truth_n they_o be_v absolute_a because_o he_o that_o make_v a_o promise_n to_o another_o upon_o a_o condition_n which_o he_o will_v also_o perform_v do_v in_o effect_n make_v a_o absolute_a promise_n as_o if_o a_o man_n promise_v another_o such_o a_o estate_n upon_o condition_n he_o pay_v such_o a_o sum_n for_o it_o and_o do_v promise_n withal_o to_o furnish_v he_o with_o that_o sum_n this_o in_o effect_n amount_v to_o a_o absolute_a promise_n of_o the_o estate_n and_o this_o be_v very_o well_o argue_v if_o the_o case_n be_v thus_o but_o god_n have_v no_o where_o promise_v to_o work_v the_o condition_n in_o we_o endeavour_n nay_o in_o case_n we_o do_v not_o he_o have_v threaten_v to_o take_v away_o his_o grace_n and_o assistance_n from_o we_o and_o if_o this_o be_v so_o than_o the_o promise_v of_o the_o gospel_n do_v not_o only_o seem_v to_o be_v conditional_a but_o be_v real_o so_o and_o it_o be_v a_o wonder_n that_o any_o man_n shall_v doubt_v of_o this_o who_o consider_v how_o frequent_o in_o the_o new_a testament_n the_o gospel_n be_v represent_v to_o we_o under_o the_o notion_n of_o a_o covenant_n since_o a_o covenant_n in_o the_o very_a nature_n of_o it_o do_v imply_v a_o mutual_a obligation_n between_o the_o party_n that_o enter_v into_o it_o but_o if_o the_o gospel_n contain_v only_a blessing_n which_o be_v promise_v on_o god_n part_n without_o any_o thing_n require_v to_o be_v do_v and_o perform_v on_o our_o part_n in_o order_n to_o the_o obtain_n of_o those_o blessing_n than_o the_o gospel_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o a_o promise_n or_o deed_n of_o gift_n make_v over_o certain_a benefit_n and_o blessing_n to_o we_o but_o can_v in_o no_o propriety_n of_o language_n in_o the_o world_n be_v call_v a_o covenant_n but_o if_o there_o be_v some_o thing_n require_v on_o our_o part_n in_o order_n to_o our_o be_v make_v partaker_n of_o the_o promise_n which_o god_n have_v make_v to_o we_o as_o the_o scripture_n every_o where_o tell_v we_o there_o be_v than_o the_o promise_n be_v plain_o conditional_a to_o instance_n in_o the_o promise_n of_o forgiveness_n of_o sin_n repent_v that_o your_o sin_n may_v be_v blot_v out_o that_o be_v upon_o this_o condition_n that_o you_o repent_v of_o your_o sin_n they_o shall_v be_v forgive_v and_o not_o otherwise_o can_v there_o be_v any_o plain_a condition_n in_o the_o world_n than_o be_v in_o those_o word_n of_o our_o saviour_n if_o you_o forgive_v man_n their_o trespass_n your_o heavenly_a father_n will_v also_o forgive_v your_o trespass_n but_o if_o you_o forgive_v not_o man_n their_o trespass_n neither_o will_v your_o heavenly_a father_n forgive_v your_o trespass_n this_o be_v so_o far_o from_o be_v any_o prejudice_n to_o the_o freeness_n of_o god_n grace_n who_o be_v infinite_o gracious_a in_o offer_v such_o great_a blessing_n to_o we_o upon_o any_o condition_n that_o we_o can_v perform_v yet_o it_o be_v one_o of_o the_o absurde_a thing_n in_o the_o world_n to_o imagine_v that_o god_n shall_v doctrine_n of_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n be_v to_o consider_v when_o man_n may_v be_v say_v to_o have_v a_o right_n to_o these_o promise_n so_o as_o to_o be_v able_a upon_o good_a ground_n to_o apply_v they_o to_o themselves_o and_o the_o answer_n to_o this_o be_v very_o plain_a and_o easy_a namely_o when_o they_o find_v the_o condition_n of_o these_o promise_n in_o themselves_o and_o not_o till_o then_o when_o a_o man_n have_v true_o repent_v of_o his_o sin_n so_o as_o to_o forsake_v they_o and_o lead_v a_o new_a life_n and_o when_o he_o do_v from_o his_o heart_n forgive_v those_o that_o have_v offend_v he_o and_o have_v lay_v down_o all_o animosity_n against_o they_o and_o thought_n of_o revenge_n then_o have_v he_o a_o right_n to_o the_o promise_n of_o pardon_n and_o forgiveness_n and_o may_v apply_v to_o himself_o in_o particular_a what_o the_o scripture_n say_v in_o general_a that_o god_n will_v blot_v out_o all_o his_o transgression_n and_o remember_v his_o iniquity_n no_o more_o when_o a_o man_n do_v constant_o and_o earnest_o implore_v the_o assistance_n of_o god_n holy_a spirit_n and_o be_v ready_a to_o yield_v to_o the_o motion_n of_o it_o and_o do_v faithful_o make_v use_n of_o that_o strength_n and_o assistance_n which_o god_n afford_v he_o than_o he_o may_v expect_v the_o continuance_n of_o his_o grace_n and_o further_a degree_n of_o it_o when_o a_o man_n make_v it_o the_o constant_a and_o sinsincere_a endeavour_n of_o his_o life_n to_o please_v god_n and_o to_o walk_v in_o all_o the_o ordinance_n and_o commandment_n of_o the_o lord_n blameless_a and_o be_v effectual_o teach_v by_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n to_o deny_v ungodliness_n and_o worldly_a lust_n and_o to_o live_v sober_o and_o righteous_o and_o godly_o in_o this_o be_v lay_v up_o for_o i_o a_o crown_n of_o righteousness_n which_o god_n the_o righteous_a judge_n shall_v give_v i_o in_o that_o day_n upon_o these_o term_n and_o in_o these_o case_n man_n may_v upon_o good_a ground_n apply_v to_o themselves_o these_o exceed_a great_a and_o precious_a promise_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o so_o far_o as_o any_o man_n be_v doubtful_a and_o uncertain_a of_o the_o performance_n of_o the_o condition_n which_o the_o gospel_n require_v so_o far_o he_o must_v necessary_o question_v his_o right_n and_o title_n to_o the_o blessing_n promise_v and_o if_o any_o man_n think_v this_o doctrine_n too_o uncomfortable_a and_o be_v willing_a to_o reject_v it_o upon_o this_o account_n i_o shall_v only_o say_v this_o that_o man_n may_v cheat_v themselves_o if_o they_o please_v but_o most_o certain_o they_o will_v never_o find_v any_o true_a and_o solid_a comfort_n in_o any_o other_o this_o be_v a_o plain_a and_o sensible_a account_n of_o a_o man_n confidence_n and_o good_a hope_n in_o the_o promise_v of_o god_n but_o for_o a_o man_n to_o apply_v any_o promise_n to_o himself_o before_o he_o find_v the_o condition_n in_o himself_o be_v not_o faith_n but_o either_o fancy_n or_o presumption_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v a_o very_a preposterous_a course_n which_o many_o take_v to_o advise_v and_o exhort_v man_n with_o so_o much_o earnestness_n to_o apply_v the_o promise_n of_o god_n to_o themselves_o and_o to_o tell_v they_o that_o they_o be_v guilty_a of_o great_a unbelief_n in_o not_o doint_v it_o that_o which_o be_v proper_a to_o exhort_v man_n to_o be_v to_o â—ndeavour_v to_o perform_v the_o condition_n upon_o which_o god_n have_v promise_v any_o blessing_n to_o
