even_o whilst_o it_o be_v but_o a_o little_a light_n and_o much_o darkness_n see_v joh._n 20.1_o and_o mark_n 1.35_o this_o last_o text_n be_v to_o be_v read_v as_o chemnitius_n well_o observe_v thus_o in_o the_o morning_n whilst_o it_o be_v very_o much_o night_n etc._n etc._n 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d and_o so_o beza_n read_v it_o also_o now_o as_o the_o day_n begin_v with_o the_o least_o light_n appear_v in_o the_o sky_n so_o we_o be_v to_o think_v it_o last_v so_o long_o as_o there_o be_v any_o sun_n light_a in_o the_o sky_n or_o until_o the_o day_n be_v quite_o off_o the_o sky_n thus_o much_o be_v speak_v of_o the_o word_n day_n show_v 1._o what_o be_v mean_v by_o it_o to_o wit_n the_o time_n of_o light_n 2._o how_o long_o this_o day_n be_v to_o wit_n from_o the_o first_o approach_n of_o the_o sun_n light_n unto_o the_o last_o departure_n of_o its_o light_n the_o consideration_n of_o these_o two_o point_n discover_v unto_o we_o a_o threefold_a error_n of_o our_o time_n the_o one_o be_v of_o such_o as_o hold_v that_o the_o sabbath_n day_n begin_v at_o midnight_n and_o last_v to_o the_o next_o midnight_n the_o other_o be_v of_o those_o who_o hold_v the_o sabbath_n day_n begin_v in_o the_o morning_n &_o last_v to_o the_o next_o morning_n the_o other_o of_o such_o as_o hold_v it_o begin_v on_o the_o evening_n of_o saturday_n night_n all_o which_o opinion_n in_o they_o hold_v as_o well_o a_o night_n as_o a_o day_n to_o be_v a_o part_n of_o the_o sabbath_n day_n but_o these_o be_v all_o erroniouse_a because_o growndlesse_a for_o the_o word_n day_n in_o the_o come_v signify_v the_o time_n of_o light_n &_o this_o be_v the_o frequent_a use_n of_o the_o word_n in_o scripture_n &_o that_o the_o word_n day_n must_v signify_v darkness_n as_o well_o as_o light_v i_o think_v can_v be_v show_v in_o the_o scripture_n wherefore_o as_o to_o give_v god_n less_o than_o the_o whole_a time_n of_o light_n be_v to_o give_v god_n not_o a_o day_n but_o a_o piece_n of_o a_o day_n so_o to_o give_v god_n more_o than_o the_o whole_a time_n of_o light_n it_o to_o give_v god_n more_o than_o a_o whole_a day_n and_o so_o more_o than_o god_n have_v command_v but_o against_o this_o it_o may_v be_v say_v that_o there_o it_o a_o day_n natural_a &_o a_o day_n artificial_a the_o one_o consist_v of_o 24_o hour_n the_o other_o of_o 12_o hour_n now_o we_o must_v give_v god_n the_o large_a day_n of_o 24._o hour_n but_o for_o this_o point_n how_o ever_o this_o distinction_n may_v have_v its_o use_n in_o civil_a affair_n yet_o be_v it_o not_o found_v in_o scripture_n the_o scripture_n indeed_o mention_v a_o day_n of_o 12._o hour_n joh._n 11.9_o but_o of_o a_o day_n of_o 24._o hour_n i_o no_o where_n read_v it_o be_v not_o safe_a therefore_o to_o expound_v the_o word_n day_n in_o the_o four_o comm._n of_o a_o day_n of_o 24_o hour_n further_o it_o may_v be_v say_v that_o by_o the_o word_n day_n we_o must_v understand_v the_o night_n and_o darkness_n also_o even_o the_o whole_a time_n of_o 24._o hour_n for_o so_o it_o be_v take_v genes_n 1.5_o and_o the_o evening_n and_o morning_n be_v the_o first_o day_n where_o the_o evening_n be_v put_v for_o the_o darkness_n and_o the_o morning_n be_v put_v for_o the_o light_n and_o both_o these_o be_v call_v the_o first_o day_n where_o to_o i_o answer_v that_o this_o exposition_n be_v growndlesse_a to_o say_v that_o the_o evening_n be_v put_v for_o the_o night_n or_o darkness_n for_o it_o can_v be_v show_v in_o scripture_n that_o any_o where_o the_o word_n evening_n be_v put_v for_o the_o night_n or_o darkness_n hereunto_o assent_v mr._n perkins_n in_o his_o case_n of_o conscience_n at_o the_o end_n of_o the_o second_o book_n second_o i_o answer_v to_o give_v such_o a_o exposition_n of_o the_o text_n genes_n 1.5_o as_o make_v a_o confusion_n of_o thing_n be_v not_o safe_a for_o to_o understand_v by_o the_o evening_n the_o darkness_n and_o so_o make_v the_o word_n day_n to_o signify_v or_o comprise_v both_o light_n and_o darkness_n be_v to_o make_v a_o woeful_a confusion_n for_o so_o one_o and_o the_o same_o word_n shall_v signify_v thing_n quite_o contrary_a as_o well_o may_v one_o suppose_v hell_n to_o be_v signify_v under_o the_o word_n heaven_n as_o night_n under_o the_o word_n day_n god_n have_v distinguish_v the_o light_n from_o the_o darkness_n as_o in_o nature_n so_o by_o sundry_a proper_a name_n call_v the_o light_a day_n and_o the_o darkness_n he_o call_v night_n genes_n 1.5_o let_v not_o we_o then_o confound_v they_o a_o better_a exposition_n of_o the_o word_n evening_n be_v therefore_o to_o be_v seek_v for_o this_o end_n

so_o their_o evening_n sacrifice_n in_o the_o temple_n in_o the_o afternoon_n and_o in_o this_o sense_n see_v thes_n scripture_n genes_n 24.11_o mark_n 15.42_o exod._n 29.38.39_o deut._n 23.11_o josh_n 8.29_o ezra_n 9.4.5_o jerem._n 6.4_o deut._n 16.6_o wherefore_o according_a to_o the_o constant_a use_n of_o the_o word_n evening_n both_o among_o we_o to_o this_o day_n and_o also_o in_o the_o scripture_n i_o will_v interpret_v the_o word_n of_o the_o afternoon_n and_o so_o whereas_o it_o be_v say_v the_o evening_n and_o the_o morning_n make_v the_o first_o day_n that_o be_v the_o afternoon_n and_o the_o forenoon_n make_v the_o first_o day_n understand_v by_o morning_n the_o fore_a noon_n as_o by_o evening_n the_o afternoon_n i_o know_v nothing_o against_o this_o interpretation_n unless_o it_o be_v that_o some_o may_v object_v and_o say_v this_o be_v to_o make_v god_n put_v down_o thing_n misorderly_a for_o it_o have_v be_v better_a to_o have_v say_v so_o the_o forenoon_n and_o the_o afternoon_n make_v the_o first_o day_n rather_o than_o so_o the_o afternoon_n and_o the_o forenoon_n make_v the_o first_o day_n whereto_o i_o answer_v 1._o the_o darkness_n be_v for_o order_n before_o the_o light_n and_o yet_o god_n put_v the_o light_n before_o the_o darkness_n in_o this_o very_o five_o verse_n and_o god_n call_v the_o light_a day_n and_o the_o darkness_n he_o call_v night_n and_o why_o may_v he_o not_o also_o put_v the_o afternoon_n before_o the_o forenoon_n 2._o why_o may_v not_o god_n set_v the_o afternoon_n which_o be_v the_o latter_a before_o the_o forenoon_n which_o be_v the_o former_a as_o well_o as_o christ_n our_o saviour_n set_v forth_o the_o lord_n of_o the_o vineyard_n command_v his_o steward_n to_o call_v the_o to_o begin_v at_o midnight_n and_o in_o the_o morning_n so_o as_o they_o will_v have_v a_o night_n add_v to_o the_o day_n or_o light_n now_o touch_v the_o three_o error_n of_o those_o who_o will_v have_v the_o sabhath_fw-mi day_n to_o begin_v on_o the_o evening_n before_o the_o day_n and_o so_o to_o contain_v all_o that_o night_n that_o go_v before_o the_o day_n &_o these_o seem_v to_o have_v many_o scripture_n to_o back_v they_o as_o first_o levit._n 23.32_o from_o even_o to_o even_o shall_v you_o celebrate_v your_o sabbath_n hereunto_o i_o answer_v this_o be_v a_o peculiar_a law_n for_o one_o of_o the_o annual_a ceremonial_a sabbath_n and_o it_o therefore_o concern_v not_o the_o weekly_a moral_a sabbath_n in_o the_o four_o comm_n now_o we_o must_v not_o draw_v the_o law_n of_o this_o without_o regard_n have_v to_o the_o day_n of_o the_o week_n for_o so_o it_o be_v with_o this_o ceremonial_a sabbath_n 3_o it_o must_v last_v one_o whole_a day_n and_o a_o part_n of_o the_o day_n before_o it_o also_o for_o so_o it_o be_v with_o that_o ceremonial_a sabbath_n it_o be_v to_o hold_v upon_o the_o teenth_n day_n and_o upon_o a_o part_n of_o the_o nine_o day_n also_o levit._n 23.27.32_o an_o other_o text_n they_o produce_v out_o of_o nehem._n 13.19_o and_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o when_o the_o gate_n of_o jerusalem_n begin_v to_o be_v dark_a before_o the_o sabbath_n i_o command_v that_o the_o gate_n shall_v be_v shut_v and_o charge_v that_o they_o shall_v not_o be_v open_v till_o after_o the_o sabbath_n etc._n etc._n here_o say_v they_o nehemiah_n take_v order_n for_o the_o sabbath_n to_o begin_v when_o the_o gate_n of_o jerusalem_n begin_v to_o be_v dark_a and_o this_o be_v on_o the_o evening_n whereto_o i_o answer_v it_o follow_v not_o that_o because_o the_o gate_n be_v command_v to_o be_v shut_v when_o it_o begin_v to_o be_v dark_a that_o this_o be_v do_v lest_o that_o evening_n shall_v be_v profane_v by_o buy_v and_o sell_v for_o it_o may_v be_v very_o likely_a that_o such_o as_o come_v into_o the_o city_n with_o their_o pack_n of_o ware_n and_o pedd_n of_o fish_n as_o v._o 16._o so_o late_o in_o the_o evening_n when_o it_o be_v almost_o dark_a will_v not_o open_v their_o pack_n that_o night_n nor_o go_v into_o the_o fish_n stale_v in_o the_o market_n place_n at_o that_o time_n of_o the_o day_n but_o rather_o nehemiah_n foresee_v that_o if_o he_o permit_v they_o to_o come_v into_o the_o city_n lade_v so_o late_o in_o the_o evening_n that_o they_o mind_v to_o be_v at_o their_o markete_n early_o the_o next_o morning_n wherefore_o to_o prevent_v that_o he_o shut_v they_o out_o of_o the_o city_n over_o night_n but_o not_o because_o the_o sabbath_n begin_v over_o night_n in_o the_o evening_n 2._o i_o answer_n if_o the_o sabbath_n day_n begin_v in_o the_o evening_n at_o what_o time_n nehemiah_n cause_v the_o gate_n to_o be_v shut_v in_o than_o these_o absurdety_n will_v follow_v 1._o that_o they_o begin_v the_o sabbath_n before_o it_o be_v sabbath_n and_o they_o keep_v the_o sabbath_n till_o after_o it_o be_v sabbath_n for_o so_o say_v the_o text_n that_o the_o gate_n be_v shut_v in_o before_o the_o sabbath_n and_o that_o they_o be_v not_o open_v again_o till_o after_o the_o sabbath_n 2._o if_o the_o shut_n in_o of_o the_o gate_n do_v declare_v unto_o we_o the_o beginning_n of_o the_o sabbath_n so_o must_v it_o declare_v unto_o we_o by_o like_a reason_n the_o end_n of_o the_o sabbath_n &_o then_o this_o absurdety_n follow_v that_o we_o must_v keep_v one_o day_n and_o two_o night_n for_o our_o sabbath_n for_o so_o long_o be_v their_o gate_n shut_v in_o for_o if_o they_o shut_v the_o gate_n in_o on_z fry_z day_n towards_o night_n they_o open_v they_o not_o again_o on_o saturday_n the_o sabbath_n day_n towards_o night_n nor_o in_o all_o likely_a hood_n until_o our_o sunday_n morning_n so_o their_o gate_n remain_v shut_v one_o day_n and_o two_o night_n a_o three_o text_n they_o produce_v be_v mark._n 15.42_o and_o now_o when_o the_o even_o be_v come_v because_o it_o be_v the_o preparation_n that_o be_v the_o day_n before_o the_o sabbath_n hence_o they_o collect_v that_o the_o sabbath_n begin_v in_o the_o evening_n and_o that_o then_o be_v the_o preparation_n of_o the_o sabbath_n for_o answer_n hereto_o we_o must_v know_v that_o on_o saturday_n the_o sabbath_n day_n wherein_o christ_n lie_v in_o the_o grave_n there_o be_v two_o sabbath_n meet_v together_o upon_o that_o one_o day_n to_o wit_n the_o moral_a saturday_n and_o weekly_a sabbath_n day_n and_o also_o a_o annual_a ceremonial_a sabbath_n day_n as_o beza_n piscator_fw-la and_o other_o affirm_v this_o ceremonial_a sabbath_n day_n it_o be_v the_o 15_o day_n of_o the_o month_n the_o day_n after_o the_o preparation_n speak_v of_o on_o the_o evening_n before_o may_v concern_v the_o ceremonial_a sabbath_n which_o be_v call_v the_o first_o day_n of_o unleavened_a bread_n and_o indeed_o we_o read_v of_o a_o preparation_n that_o be_v ever_o upon_o the_o day_n before_o this_o ceremonial_a sabbath_n and_o it_o be_v the_o make_v ready_a of_o a_o lamb_n it_o must_v be_v slay_v and_o dress_v and_o roast_v before_o it_o can_v be_v eat_v and_o a_o convenient_a place_n must_v be_v provide_v for_o it_o to_o be_v eat_v in_o exod._n 12.6.8_o luk._n 22.8.9.11_o yea_o that_o this_o preparation_n have_v respect_n of_o the_o two_o sabbath_n only_o unto_o the_o ceremonial_a

name_n mention_v in_o the_o com._n as_o the_o seven_o day_n sabbath_n again_o when_o we_o be_v to_o deal_v against_o papist_n than_o we_o be_v very_o zealouse_a for_o the_o integrity_n &_o perfection_n of_o the_o law_n witness_n m._n perkins_n in_o his_o first_o volume_n pag._n 400._o where_o he_o prove_v that_o a_o papist_n can_v go_v beyond_o a_o reprobate_n because_o they_o make_v the_o whole_a law_n vain_a and_o this_o he_o affirm_v in_o these_o word_n if_o one_o frustrate_v but_o any_o one_o point_n of_o any_o one_o commandment_n the_o whole_a law_n thereby_o be_v make_v in_o
