the_o mere_a light_n of_o their_o own_o understanding_n as_o those_o who_o pretend_v to_o a_o light_n within_o in_o opposition_n to_o the_o light_n of_o the_o scripture_n or_o that_o which_o be_v instrumental_o communicate_v by_o they_o at_o best_a be_v will_v infallible_o be_v lead_v into_o the_o pit_n even_o the_o pit_n of_o everlasting_a destruction_n it_o be_v only_o the_o light_n and_o truth_n that_o be_v the_o true_a light_n of_o god_n that_o light_v contain_v in_o and_o communicate_v by_o the_o scripture_n that_o can_v infallible_o lead_v any_o of_o the_o son_n and_o daughter_n of_o fall_v adam_n into_o his_o holy_a hill_n scil_n heaven_n psal_n 43.4_o 4._o hence_o we_o may_v infer_v the_o goodness_n of_o god_n to_o fall_v man_n in_o particular_a to_o ourselves_o and_o as_o to_o abraham_n and_o his_o seed_n but_o with_o or_o to_o he_o and_o his_o seed_n whence_o the_o covenant_n or_o promise_v express_v or_o run_v in_o that_o tenor_n must_v necessary_o by_o the_o covenant_n or_o promise_v here_o intend_v but_o that_o be_v the_o covenant_n or_o those_o be_v the_o promise_v record_v gen._n 17.7_o and_o then_o the_o apostle_n immediate_o add_v in_o verse_n 17._o indeed_o intend_v another_o covenant_n and_o that_o of_o a_o quite_o different_a nature_n from_o and_o make_v long_o before_o this_o the_o word_n of_o which_o he_o recite_v but_o then_o i_o will_v know_v how_o we_o shall_v be_v sure_a that_o either_o the_o apostle_n or_o other_o penman_n of_o the_o holy_a scripture_n intend_v according_a to_o the_o letter_n of_o their_o word_n in_o any_o other_o place_n of_o the_o scripture_n but_o mr._n c._n himself_o seem_v to_o be_v sensible_a of_o the_o insufficency_n of_o this_o evasion_n and_o possible_o be_v not_o altogether_o inapprehnsive_a of_o the_o ill_a consequence_n of_o avoid_v such_o plain_a scripture_n as_o this_o will_v be_v suppose_v it_o grant_v that_o the_o apostle_n do_v recite_v the_o word_n of_o that_o promise_n hence_o he_o attempt_v the_o evasion_n of_o this_o evidence_n give_v to_o what_o we_o affirm_v concern_v the_o covenant_n by_o this_o discourse_n of_o the_o apostle_n another_o way_n and_o so_o second_o he_o endeavour_v to_o persuade_v his_o reader_n that_o the_o promise_v give_v gen._n 17._o be_v not_o the_o promise_n and_o consequent_o the_o covenant_n there_o establish_v with_o abraham_n be_v not_o the_o covenant_n that_o the_o apostle_n refer_v unto_o but_o that_o it_o be_v the_o promise_n make_v with_o abraham_n gen._n 22.18_o thus_o pag._n 78._o which_o the_o apostle_n call_v the_o covenant_n so_o he_o express_v himself_o howbeit_o i_o conceive_v the_o apostle_n have_v here_o a_o direct_a and_o special_a eye_n to_o that_o promise_n gen._n 22.18_o in_o thy_o seed_n shall_v all_o the_o make_v concern_v abraham_n seed_n that_o promise_v there_o be_v not_o to_o thou_o and_o to_o thy_o seed_n but_o in_o thy_o seed_n and_o consequent_o can_v be_v the_o promise_v the_o apostle_n here_o refer_v unto_o now_o let_v we_o see_v what_o answer_n can_v be_v give_v to_o this_o objection_n why_o say_v mr._n c._n let_v it_o be_v mind_v that_o all_o the_o promise_v make_v of_o this_o seed_n viz._n christ_n in_o one_o respect_n may_v be_v say_v to_o be_v make_v to_o this_o seed_n in_o another_o because_o they_o be_v original_o establish_v in_o the_o everlasting_a covenant_n of_o redemption_n that_o be_v between_o the_o father_n and_o the_o son_n in_o answer_v whereunto_o it_o must_v be_v say_v that_o this_o be_v a_o evasion_n of_o a_o like_a import_n with_o the_o former_a see_v it_o signify_v nothing_o at_o all_o as_o to_o the_o present_a purpose_n for_o the_o question_n still_o concern_v not_o the_o sense_n or_o meaning_n of_o the_o promise_n but_o be_v only_o what_o promise_v the_o apostle_n have_v reference_n unto_o and_o do_v intend_v and_o beside_o it_o do_v imply_v that_o the_o apostle_n may_v cite_v one_o promise_n and_o yet_o intend_v another_o hence_o unless_o any_o promise_v make_v to_o abraham_n with_o reference_n to_o his_o seed_n express_v in_o these_o term_n to_o thy_o seed_n can_v be_v produce_v we_o may_v and_o necessary_o must_v conclude_v that_o it_o be_v the_o promise_n of_o this_o covenant_n that_o the_o apostle_n have_v a_o reference_n unto_o and_o intend_v by_o such_o a_o answer_n as_o this_o the_o plain_a scripture_n may_v easy_o be_v evade_v but_o sure_o when_o the_o apostle_n express_v the_o promise_n he_o have_v reference_n unto_o and_o direct_o intend_v in_o the_o very_a word_n and_o tenor_n of_o the_o promise_n gen._n 17.7_o and_o there_o be_v no_o other_o promise_v record_v in_o scripture_n express_v in_o the_o same_o word_n or_o run_v in_o the_o same_o tenor_n that_o he_o can_v possible_o have_v reference_n unto_o but_o only_o this_o it_o will_v hardly_o be_v question_v by_o any_o man_n that_o be_v not_o resolve_v to_o turn_v away_o his_o ear_n from_o he_o that_o speak_v from_o heaven_n whether_o that_o he_o the_o promise_v refer_v unto_o and_o intend_v by_o the_o apostle_n or_o no_o this_o i_o shall_v be_v bold_a to_o say_v that_o this_o one_o testimony_n of_o the_o apostle_n concern_v this_o covenant_n will_v bear_v the_o weight_n lay_v upon_o it_o will_v evince_v to_o the_o judgement_n of_o all_o man_n who_o mind_n be_v not_o blind_v with_o excess_n of_o prejudice_n the_o infallible_a certainty_n of_o the_o covenant_n gen._n 17.7_o its_o be_v the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n let_v man_n or_o devil_n do_v their_o utmost_a to_o weaken_v it_o from_o the_o whole_a we_o see_v the_o ground_n of_o those_o two_o argument_n lie_v firm_a the_o argument_n bottom_v thereupon_o be_v valid_a and_o consequent_o those_o six_o argument_n to_o prove_v this_o covenant_n to_o be_v the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n remain_v in_o their_o full_a force_n now_o then_o before_o i_o proceed_v any_o further_a i_o shall_v brief_o recapitulate_v what_o evidence_n we_o have_v from_o plain_a and_o express_a scripture_n that_o this_o covenant_n under_o consideration_n be_v not_o the_o old_a covenant_n or_o covenant_n of_o work_n but_o be_v indeed_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n and_o 1._o the_o
