the_o sight_n of_o god_n be_v lively_a and_o always_o join_v with_o a_o godly_a life_n yet_o that_o this_o faith_n justify_v and_o reconcile_v we_o no_o other_o way_n but_o upon_o the_o account_n of_o good_a work_n be_v most_o false_a for_o this_o be_v not_o a_o good_a consequence_n from_o the_o premise_n because_o faith_n be_v not_o alone_o in_o the_o life_n of_o the_o believer_n therefore_o faith_n be_v not_o alone_o in_o the_o office_n of_o justify_v or_o because_o the_o faith_n that_o justify_v be_v not_o a_o dead_a but_o a_o lively_a faith_n therefore_o it_o do_v not_o justify_v alone_o without_o work_n for_o herein_o be_v a_o fallacy_n of_o the_o consequence_n but_o you_o may_v object_v whence_o then_o be_v faith_n say_v to_o be_v lively_a and_o not_o dead_a but_o from_o draw_v their_o life_n and_o sap_n from_o the_o root_n of_o the_o tree_n but_o not_o the_o root_n thereby_o from_o they_o just_o so_o external_a action_n proceed_v from_o faith_n as_o the_o root_n which_o if_o they_o be_v good_a they_o evidence_n the_o root_n to_o be_v sound_a and_o lively_a and_o this_o be_v all_o they_o do_v but_o they_o communicate_v no_o life_n thereunto_o and_o this_o life_n and_o virtue_n of_o faith_n be_v not_o one_o but_o twofold_a and_o it_o act_v faith_n partly_o in_o heaven_n and_o partly_o in_o earth_n if_o you_o ask_v what_o it_o do_v among_o man_n upon_o say_v to_o justify_v add_v unto_o the_o subject_a of_o this_o enunciation_n it_o be_v own_o proper_a predicate_v or_o i_o may_v rather_o say_v add_v the_o proper_a subject_n of_o justification_n and_o understand_v aright_o who_o they_o be_v who_o faith_n only_o justify_v without_o work_n according_a to_o the_o say_n of_o paul_n for_o herein_o chief_o lie_v the_o difficulty_n of_o this_o controversy_n sinner_n neither_o be_v there_o any_o thing_n wherein_o the_o adversary_n be_v more_o gross_o mistake_v and_o herein_o they_o follow_v the_o footstep_n of_o those_o concern_v who_o cyprian_n just_o complain_v say_v they_o look_v at_o that_o which_o be_v say_v in_o the_o first_o place_n but_o regard_v not_o what_o follow_v after_o they_o catch_v at_o that_o which_o we_o assert_v of_o faith_n only_o exclusive_o and_o think_v there_o be_v injury_n do_v to_o good_a work_n if_o faith_n only_o be_v sufficient_a to_o salvation_n but_o they_o take_v no_o notice_n what_o manner_n of_o person_n they_o be_v to_o who_o this_o justification_n by_o faith_n belong_v it_o be_v the_o advice_n of_o those_o school_n divine_v to_o consider_v the_o reason_n of_o thing_n propose_v according_a to_o their_o subject_a matter_n and_o why_o then_o do_v they_o not_o observe_v their_o own_o rule_n in_o this_o evangelical_n assertion_n christ_n affirm_v it_o paul_n confirm_v it_o yea_o the_o common_a practice_n of_o life_n natural_a reason_n and_o experience_n and_o the_o conscience_n of_o all_o good_a man_n proclaim_v that_o ruin_n come_v only_o from_o our_o work_n and_o salvation_n only_o from_o christ._n and_o because_o we_o receive_v this_o only_a mediator_n christ_n by_o faith_n only_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o we_o assert_v it_o be_v faith_n that_o justify_v true_o humble_v as_o seed_v into_o good_a ground_n but_o because_o that_o faith_n which_o do_v not_o provoke_v unto_o love_n and_o good_a work_n though_o it_o may_v be_v boast_v of_o at_o a_o high_a rate_n yet_o in_o reality_n it_o be_v no_o faith_n at_o all_o but_o only_o a_o shadow_n and_o faith_n false_a resemblance_n of_o faith_n and_o the_o same_o answer_n may_v serve_v for_o all_o their_o argument_n which_o they_o have_v wrest_v out_o of_o the_o sermon_n of_o christ_n in_o the_o gospel_n to_o defend_v their_o doctrine_n of_o justification_n by_o work_n of_o which_o sort_n be_v these_o next_o follow_v argument_n matth._n 7._o many_o shall_v say_v to_o i_o in_o that_o day_n lord_n we_o have_v prophesy_v in_o thy_o name_n and_o in_o thy_o name_n we_o have_v cast_v out_o devil_n and_o way_n for_o faith_n be_v acceptable_a through_o christ_n but_o repentance_n only_o upon_o the_o account_n of_o faith_n and_o it_o be_v also_o a_o certain_a truth_n that_o though_o by_o faith_n only_o as_o the_o procure_a cause_n we_o obtain_v justification_n in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n yet_o this_o very_a faith_n do_v not_o put_v forth_o its_o power_n of_o justify_v upon_o any_o but_o penitent_a and_o brokenhearted_a sinner_n and_o therefore_o in_o the_o gospel_n we_o be_v so_o often_o invite_v to_o repentance_n not_o that_o it_o be_v not_o true_a faith_n only_o which_o justify_v without_o repentance_n but_o because_o faith_n if_o it_o be_v true_a justify_v no_o other_o but_o they_o that_o have_v turn_v from_o their_o sin_n in_o sincerity_n and_o be_v convert_v unto_o god_n by_o justification_n though_o i_o acknowledge_v there_o be_v great_a difference_n between_o consist_v the_o law_n and_o grace_n in_o respect_n of_o the_o manner_n of_o do_v and_o the_o end_n of_o their_o office_n for_o what_o the_o law_n exact_v that_o grace_n perform_v but_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o thing_n themselves_o and_o the_o action_n unto_o which_o they_o be_v direct_v see_v both_o the_o law_n and_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n be_v exercise_v in_o the_o same_o subject_a matter_n there_o be_v no_o difference_n between_o they_o the_o law_n command_v we_o to_o love_v our_o neighbour_n and_o lay_v a_o punishment_n on_o he_o that_o disobey_v but_o grace_n communicate_v strength_n and_o ability_n to_o perform_v what_o the_o law_n command_v which_o when_o we_o perform_v we_o be_v say_v to_o require_v these_o thing_n at_o your_o hand_n nay_o but_o 1._o he_o will_v defend_v himself_o and_o take_v sanctuary_n in_o the_o law_n which_o he_o have_v fulfil_v not_o by_o the_o strength_n of_o his_o own_o freewill_n but_o by_o the_o help_n of_o divine_a grace_n say_v you_o so_o david_n be_v guard_v with_o as_o much_o grace_n as_o any_o man_n be_v yet_o sink_v down_o under_o the_o weight_n
