prophesy_v also_o of_o other_o matter_n to_o come_v yet_o they_o come_v and_o be_v send_v of_o god_n peculiar_o to_o this_o end_n and_o purpose_n to_o preach_v and_o foretell_v of_o christ_n all_o they_o that_o believe_v in_o christ_n be_v prophet_n for_o they_o have_v the_o chief_a head_n of_o that_o thing_n which_o prophet_n ought_v to_o have_v although_o all_o of_o they_o have_v not_o the_o gift_n of_o propheci_v for_o even_o as_o through_o the_o faith_n of_o one_o jesus_n christ_n we_o be_v all_o brother_n king_n and_o priest_n so_o also_o through_o christ_n we_o be_v prophet_n for_o we_o can_v all_o utter_v and_o declare_v those_o thing_n that_o appertain_v to_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n and_o christian_a life_n we_o also_o so_o far_o as_o be_v needful_a and_o expedient_a for_o we_o can_v foretell_v of_o thing_n to_o come_v as_o that_o there_o shall_v be_v a_o day_n of_o general_a judgement_n and_o that_o we_o shall_v all_o rise_v again_o from_o the_o dead_a and_o final_o we_o understande_v the_o whole_a scripture_n this_o witness_v s._n paul_n sai_v you_o may_v all_o prophecy_n one_o by_o one_o i_o cor._n fourteen_o therefore_o say_v s._n peter_n thus_o we_o have_v such_o a_o word_n of_o the_o prophet_n as_o be_v sure_a enough_o of_o itself_o only_a see_v you_o that_o it_o be_v firm_a and_o sure_a to_o you_o and_o you_o do_v well_o if_o you_o take_v heed_n light_n that_o he_o may_v see_v which_o way_n to_o go_v even_o so_o the_o gospel_n be_v as_o a_o candle_n at_o midnight_n and_o in_o the_o dark_a whereas_o all_o human_a reason_n and_o wisdom_n be_v nothing_o but_o mere_a error_n and_o blindness_n the_o world_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o a_o kingdom_n of_o darkness_n in_o this_o darkness_n god_n lighten_v we_o with_o his_o candle_n to_o wit_n his_o glorious_a gospel_n which_o direct_v our_o step_n aright_o that_o we_o may_v see_v which_o way_n to_o go_v and_o walk_v in_o this_o world_n till_o such_o time_n as_o the_o morning_n appear_v and_o the_o day_n dawn_n this_o place_n do_v also_o main_o oppugn_v and_o beat_v down_o all_o the_o foolish_a trompery_n of_o human_a doctrine_n for_o sing_v that_o the_o word_n of_o god_n be_v the_o candle_n and_o lantern_n that_o give_v light_a in_o dark_a corner_n and_o obscure_a place_n we_o must_v necessary_o thereupon_o conclude_v that_o all_o other_o thing_n be_v mere_a darkness_n for_o if_o there_o have_v be_v any_o other_o light_n beside_o the_o word_n s._n peter_n will_v not_o have_v use_v these_o speech_n never_o consider_v and_o weigh_v therefore_o how_o skilful_a and_o wise_a those_o man_n be_v that_o teach_v any_o other_o doctrine_n beside_o the_o word_n of_o god_n neither_o let_v it_o any_o whit_n move_v thou_o how_o glorious_o and_o galant_o so_o ever_o they_o couch_n their_o smoothed_a reason_n for_o where_o thou_o feel_v and_o see_v the_o worde_n of_o god_n to_o be_v absent_a doubt_v not_o but_o all_o which_o thou_o hear_v be_v mere_a blindness_n and_o erroneous_a darkness_n neither_o let_v it_o any_o thing_n move_v thou_o in_o that_o they_o brag_v and_o say_v that_o they_o have_v the_o holy_a ghost_n for_o how_o can_v they_o have_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n which_o have_v not_o the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o they_o do_v nothing_o else_o but_o call_v light_a darkness_n and_o darkness_n light_n as_o it_o be_v say_v esaie_n v._o this_o word_n of_o god_n be_v the_o gospel_n whereby_o we_o be_v through_o christ_n redeem_v from_o sin_n death_n and_o hell_n he_o that_o harken_v and_o give_v ear_n thereunto_o have_v a_o link_n or_o a_o erroneous_a doctrine_n and_o of_o his_o word_n this_o be_v the_o meaning_n forasmuch_o as_o you_o know_v that_o we_o have_v the_o worde_n of_o god_n cleave_v fast_o unto_o it_o and_o suffer_v not_o yourselves_o to_o be_v seduce_v by_o false_a teacher_n although_o they_o come_v and_o say_v that_o they_o have_v the_o holy_a ghost_n for_o know_v you_o this_o first_o that_o no_o pprophecy_n in_o the_o scripture_n be_v of_o any_o private_a interpretation_n note_v this_o sai_n therefore_o well_o and_o think_v not_o that_o you_o shall_v ever_o be_v able_a of_o your_o own_o reason_n and_o industry_n to_o expound_v and_o explain_v the_o scripture_n hereby_o be_v throw_v down_o to_o the_o ground_n all_o the_o proper_a and_o private_a interpretation_n of_o all_o the_o father_n and_o cor._n x._o this_o interpretation_n be_v true_a and_o sound_a for_o we_o be_v sure_o thereof_o and_o know_v that_o it_o be_v not_o devise_v and_o invent_v by_o man_n but_o ground_v and_o draw_v out_o of_o the_o very_a word_n of_o god_n for_o those_o thing_n that_o be_v write_v &_o mention_v in_o the_o prophet_n be_v not_o invent_v and_o devise_v by_o man_n but_o holy_a man_n speak_v as_o they_o be_v inspire_v and_o move_v by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o thus_o end_v this_o first_o chapter_n wherein_o saint_n peter_n have_v first_o teach_v we_o the_o right_a and_o true_a good_a work_n in_o deed_n which_o we_o ought_v to_o practice_v and_o walk_v in_o thereby_o to_o notify_v and_o declare_v our_o faith_n and_o next_o that_o in_o the_o church_n of_o christ_n there_o ought_v nothing_o to_o the_o beginning_n for_o it_o have_v be_v better_a for_o they_o not_o to_o have_v know_v the_o way_n of_o righteousness_n then_o after_o they_o have_v know_v it_o to_o turn_v from_o the_o holy_a commandment_n give_v unto_o they_o but_o it_o be_v come_v unto_o they_o accord_v to_o the_o true_a proverb_n the_o dog_n be_v return_v to_o his_o own_o vomit_n and_o the_o sow_n that_o be_v wash_v to_o the_o wallow_a in_o the_o mire_n but_o there_o be_v false_a prophet_n also_o among_o the_o people_n even_o as_o there_o be_v false_a teacher_n among_o you_o all_o true_a prophecy_n have_v his_o proceed_n from_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o so_o have_v have_v from_o the_o begin_n of_o the_o world_n and_o shall_v have_v till_o the_o end_n of_o the_o same_o so_o that_o nothing_o be_v to_o be_v preach_v but_o the_o sound_n and_o sincere_a worde_n of_o god_n howbeit_o it_o have_v always_o be_v see_v that_o as_o there_o have_v be_v true_a prophet_n sincere_o utter_a the_o pure_a word_n of_o the_o lord_n so_o have_v there_o still_o be_v false_a teacher_n and_o malicious_a seducer_n and_o shall_v so_o hencefoorthe_o continue_v till_o the_o end_n of_o the_o world_n when_o you_o therefore_o have_v the_o true_a worde_n of_o god_n think_v none_o otherwise_o but_o y_o t_o you_o also_o shall_v have_v false_a teacher_n this_o admonition_n may_v stand_v for_o a_o general_a and_o infallibe_n rule_v that_o wheresoever_o the_o worde_n of_o god_n be_v sincere_o preach_v and_o teach_v there_o also_o by_o and_o by_o arise_v false_a teacher_n and_o dissemble_a hypocrite_n the_o reason_n be_v because_o although_o the_o worde_n be_v preach_v to_o all_o yet_o do_v not_o all_o embrace_n
know_v that_o the_o same_o time_n be_v come_v the_o prophet_n daniel_n come_v very_o never_o the_o matter_n nevertheless_o he_o speak_v thereof_o obscure_o and_o darck_o namely_o at_o what_o time_n christ_n shall_v suffer_v and_o die_v and_o when_o this_o or_o that_o thing_n shall_v come_v to_o pass_v so_o they_o have_v a_o undoubted_a prophecy_n that_o the_o kingdom_n of_o the_o jew_n shall_v cease_v before_o christ_n do_v come_v but_o the_o day_n and_o certain_a time_n when_o the_o same_o shall_v be_v fulfil_v be_v not_o express_v forasmuch_o as_o it_o be_v sufficient_a to_o know_v that_o against_o and_o also_o they_o shall_v never_o be_v able_a to_o prove_v unto_o we_o their_o childish_a trifle_n by_o the_o scripture_n as_o namely_o that_o he_o be_v in_o a_o damnable_a ease_n which_o fa_v not_o this_o or_o that_o day_n and_o such_o like_a wherefore_o it_o be_v not_o meet_v neither_o ought_v we_o at_o any_o hand_n to_o believe_v they_o sainete_n peter_n now_o say_v moreover_o and_o the_o glory_n that_o shall_v follow_v that_o which_o be_v here_o speak_v of_o the_o apostle_n may_v be_v understand_v both_o of_o the_o affliction_n which_o christ_n himself_o suffer_v and_o also_o wherefore_o the_o affliction_n of_o christ_n be_v daily_o accomplish_v in_o christian_n even_o unto_o the_o end_n of_o the_o world_n this_o now_o be_v no_o small_a comfort_n unto_o we_o that_o scripture_n they_o be_v call_v priest_n and_o whether_o god_n do_v so_o name_v and_o call_v they_o there_o may_v some_o be_v choose_v and_o appoint_v by_o the_o church_n to_o execute_v the_o charge_n and_o office_n of_o minister_n of_o the_o worde_n to_o feed_v the_o congregation_n by_o preach_v and_o to_o administer_v the_o sacrament_n and_o yet_o nevertheless_o we_o be_v all_o priest_n as_o many_o of_o we_o as_o be_v christian_n for_o see_v that_o we_o be_v found_v and_o couch_v upon_o that_o stone_n which_o be_v the_o high_a priest_n before_o god_n we_o also_o must_v needs_o be_v priest_n also_o for_o that_o whatsoever_o he_o have_v we_o have_v and_o thesame_n be_v we_o wherefore_o i_o will_v wish_v that_o this_o word_n priest_n as_o well_o as_o this_o name_n christian_n shall_v be_v common_a to_o all_o for_o these_o name_n priest_n christian_n and_o baptise_a be_v all_o one_o now_o as_o i_o can_v not_o abide_v that_o these_o popish_a shavelynge_v shall_v thus_o presume_v and_o take_v upon_o they_o only_o to_o be_v good_a christian_n or_o only_o baptise_a so_o neither_o ought_v i_o to_o suffer_v this_o that_o they_o will_v only_o have_v themselves_o to_o be_v priest_n although_o notwithstanding_o they_o have_v violent_o hale_v and_o pull_v this_o word_n as_o pertinent_o and_o proper_o speak_v unto_o they_o even_o with_o the_o like_a presumption_n and_o brainless_a boldness_n as_o they_o have_v call_v that_o only_o the_o church_n which_o the_o pope_n with_o his_o mure_v crew_n have_v hitherto_o conclude_v and_o decree_v but_o the_o scripture_n teach_v we_o a_o other_o manner_n of_o lesson_n and_o therefore_o diligent_o note_v and_o mark_v these_o thing_n to_o the_o end_n thou_o may_v thorough_o discern_v between_o they_o who_o god_n call_v priest_n and_o they_o that_o so_o call_v theim selue_o for_o by_o this_o mean_n after_o a_o long_a mistake_n of_o it_o we_o must_v at_o length_n recover_v and_o reduce_v this_o word_n priest_n to_o his_o right_a sense_n and_o proper_a meaning_n that_o it_o may_v be_v as_o common_a a_o name_n as_o the_o name_n of_o christian_n for_o to_o be_v a_o priest_n be_v not_o the_o name_n of_o any_o outward_a or_o external_a office_n but_o it_o be_v such_o as_o be_v exercise_v only_o toward_o god_n and_o that_o in_o spirit_n and_o even_o after_o the_o self_n same_o manner_n it_o be_v that_o we_o be_v all_o indifferent_o call_v king_n for_o even_o as_o priest_n so_o also_o king_n be_v in_o this_o place_n spiritual_a vocables_n or_o word_n like_v as_o also_o these_o name_n be_v christian_n holy_a and_o church_n and_o even_o as_o thou_o do_v not_o call_v any_o man_n a_o christian_n because_o he_o have_v much_o money_n and_o wealth_n but_o because_o he_o be_v build_v upon_o the_o aforesaid_a stone_n believe_v in_o christ_n so_o likewise_o be_v thou_o not_o therefore_o call_v priest_n because_o thou_o haste_v a_o shave_a crown_n and_o jet_v the_o street_n in_o a_o long_a gown_n but_o because_o thou_o dare_v appear_v and_o show_v thyself_o in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n offer_v up_o thyself_o unto_o he_o and_o pray_v for_o the_o whole_a church_n unto_o who_o thou_o both_o can_v and_o use_v to_o preach_v christ_n and_o after_o the_o very_a same_o manner_n altogether_o thou_o be_v not_o therefore_o a_o king_n because_o thou_o wear_v a_o crown_n of_o gold_n and_o have_v large_a dominion_n and_o many_o people_n under_o thou_o in_o subjection_n but_o because_o thou_o be_v lord_n of_o all_o thing_n yea_o over_o death_n sin_n and_o hell_n for_o thou_o be_v aswell_o a_o king_n as_o christ_n himself_o be_v a_o king_n if_o so_o be_v that_o thou_o believe_v on_o he_o now_o he_o be_v not_o a_o king_n in_o such_o sort_n as_o the_o king_n of_o the_o world_n be_v for_o he_o neither_o wear_v any_o crown_n of_o
will_v not_o here_o define_v whether_o in_o this_o place_n s._n peter_n speak_v of_o a_o outward_a incontinency_n or_o no_o or_o whether_o he_o do_v as_o saint_n paul_n order_n be_v call_v all_o those_o thing_n fleshly_a which_o a_o man_n yet_o live_v in_o this_o body_n and_o carnal_a life_n commit_v and_o do_v without_o faith_n but_o i_o be_o of_o opinion_n that_o s._n peter_n in_o this_o place_n use_v a_o other_o manner_n of_o reason_n neither_o do_v i_o think_v that_o he_o take_v this_o word_n soul_n in_o such_o a_o sense_n as_o saint_n paul_n do_v who_o take_v it_o for_o spirit_n but_o that_o he_o somewhat_o more_o deep_o as_o i_o suppose_v consider_v the_o propriety_n of_o the_o greek_a howbeit_o it_o be_v not_o great_o material_a whether_o a_o man_n understande_v this_o and_o to_o fight_v against_o sin_n this_o diversity_n and_o variety_n that_o in_o apparaunce_n seem_v to_o be_v in_o they_o marvellous_o gravel_v and_o offend_v these_o great_a rabbin_n and_o wonderful_o blind_v their_o sense_n from_o right_o understand_v the_o true_a meaning_n of_o the_o scripture_n thus_o therefore_o stay_v thou_o thyself_o and_o for_o thy_o sure_a conceive_n of_o this_o and_o such_o like_a place_n be_v at_o this_o resolution_n thou_o ought_v to_o consider_v christian_n after_o two_o sort_n namely_o accord_v to_o their_o inward_a and_o hide_a life_n to_o wit_n faith_n mean_v that_o this_o shall_v be_v do_z by_o human_a reason_n whereupon_o they_o grow_v so_o far_o in_o their_o dream_a dotage_n that_o in_o the_o end_n they_o be_v not_o ashamed_a to_o say_v that_o the_o scripture_n be_v too_o weak_a to_o refel_v and_o confute_v heretic_n and_o therefore_o that_o the_o defect_n thereof_o must_v be_v supply_v by_o reason_n and_o that_o the_o right_a trial_n of_o true_a faith_n must_v be_v fetch_v out_o of_o the_o wisdom_n of_o man_n brain_n whereas_o our_o faith_n far_o pass_v all_o reason_n as_o that_o which_o be_v the_o great_a power_n and_o virtue_n of_o
