promise_n to_o answer_v many_o prayer_n that_o we_o make_v but_o i_o wonder_v more_o that_o god_n shall_v grant_v thing_n that_o we_o pray_v not_o for_o this_o be_v the_o exceed_a greatness_n of_o his_o people_n and_o servant_n he_o teach_v they_o above_o what_o they_o be_v teach_v outward_o by_o man_n as_o thus_o cast_v with_o thyself_o suppose_v thou_o have_v every_o sermon_n that_o thou_o have_v hear_v in_o thy_o life_n and_o every_o lecture_n that_o thou_o have_v hear_v on_o the_o week_n day_n and_o on_o the_o lord_n day_n that_o thou_o have_v they_o in_o order_n and_o method_n suppose_v they_o be_v write_v in_o thy_o heart_n and_o fresh_a in_o thy_o memory_n that_o thou_o do_v understanding_n and_o remember_v every_o sermon_n that_o thou_o have_v hear_v which_o no_o man_n do_v a_o man_n will_v think_v such_o a_o one_o to_o be_v a_o very_a know_v man_n truly_n if_o thou_o have_v it_o so_o thou_o may_v be_v a_o miserable_a confuse_a blind_a man_n for_o all_o that_o for_o all_o that_o ever_o thou_o have_v hear_v preach_v thou_o may_v be_v a_o blind_a creature_n for_o alas_o our_o teach_n come_v with_o so_o much_o weakness_n and_o dross_n with_o it_o and_o one_o say_v but_o if_o god_n be_v away_o nothing_o will_v serve_v he_o as_o a_o child_n that_o be_v fond_a of_o his_o mother_n give_v he_o a_o rattle_n or_o a_o cake_n while_o he_o be_v in_o her_o hand_n he_o be_v glad_a but_o nothing_o will_v still_v he_o without_o she_o a_o three_o thing_n be_v this_o there_o be_v a_o exceed_a boldness_n in_o a_o fond_a child_n to_o ask_v any_o thing_n of_o his_o whatsoever_o they_o be_v that_o be_v one_o thing_n he_o take_v notice_n of_o the_o great_a mercy_n of_o god_n to_o he_o the_o second_o be_v he_o do_v consider_v what_o he_o shall_v do_v to_o god_n he_o in_o the_o land_n of_o the_o live_n and_o diverse_a such_o duty_n he_o lay_v upon_o himself_o in_o consideration_n of_o god_n great_a mercy_n to_o he_o now_o i_o have_v not_o time_n and_o strength_n to_o go_v over_o all_o which_o be_v many_o in_o the_o psalm_n and_o therefore_o i_o will_v only_o tell_v you_o a_o few_o thought_n that_o i_o have_v concern_v god_n mercy_n in_o bestow_v bristol_n upon_o we_o again_o and_o that_o according_a to_o david_n method_n here_o which_o be_v the_o most_o natural_a and_o the_o most_o usual_a by_o the_o saint_n first_o to_o take_v notice_n of_o god_n goodness_n in_o that_o mercy_n and_o second_o to_o consider_v what_o be_v our_o duty_n concern_v the_o first_o there_o be_v abundance_n of_o mercy_n and_o kindness_n couch_v and_o wrap_v up_o together_o in_o that_o it_o be_v not_o only_o the_o take_n of_o a_o garrison_n but_o there_o be_v abundance_n of_o mercy_n in_o it_o and_o mingle_v with_o it_o you_o opposition_n god_n mercy_n in_o the_o take_n in_o of_o bristol_n consider_v in_o five_o respect_n 1._o in_o regard_n of_o the_o potent_a opposition_n especial_o that_o be_v concern_v in_o it_o and_o be_v godly_a you_o know_v but_o in_o my_o eye_n these_o be_v the_o chief_a that_o i_o see_v and_o be_o affect_v with_o the_o first_o be_v i_o look_v upon_o the_o greatness_n of_o the_o mercy_n i_o see_v that_o all_o be_v great_a thing_n in_o and_o about_o it_o there_o be_v no_o mean_a inconsiderable_a thing_n in_o it_o i_o know_v it_o be_v a_o great_a city_n the_o second_o in_o the_o kingdom_n and_o i_o know_v also_o there_o be_v great_a work_n to_o keep_v it_o i_o know_v there_o be_v great_a and_o strong_a and_o numerous_a soldier_n in_o it_o there_o be_v great_a resolution_n in_o those_o soldier_n and_o i_o be_o sure_a too_o there_o be_v great_a misery_n in_o the_o city_n among_o the_o poor_a people_n and_o round_o about_o the_o city_n &_o have_v be_v these_o two_o year_n the_o plague_n scarcity_n of_o provision_n and_o other_o thing_n and_o no_o man_n doubt_n but_o it_o be_v of_o great_a consequence_n if_o the_o lord_n make_v it_o a_o blessing_n to_o we_o if_o the_o lord_n sanctify_v it_o it_o will_v be_v of_o great_a consequence_n not_o only_o to_o those_o part_n be_v the_o chief_a city_n in_o that_o part_n of_o the_o kingdom_n but_o to_o this_o city_n and_o to_o the_o whole_a state_n and_o kingdom_n i_o see_v nothing_o in_o it_o but_o great_a thing_n and_o therefore_o i_o think_v that_o he_o that_o shall_v do_v this_o for_o we_o sure_o he_o must_v needs_o be_v a_o great_a god_n that_o pull_v down_o the_o great_a pride_n of_o that_o city_n and_o the_o garrison_n in_o it_o that_o must_v throw_v down_o those_o bulwark_n as_o it_o be_v and_o therefore_o let_v we_o exalt_v god_n let_v we_o conceive_v of_o god_n according_a to_o his_o greatness_n for_o sure_o he_o that_o do_v that_o work_n there_o no_o man_n will_v doubt_v or_o deny_v that_o it_o be_v god_n and_o that_o god_n that_o do_v it_o any_o man_n that_o will_v serious_o consider_v of_o the_o work_n will_v say_v he_o be_v a_o great_a god_n therefore_o let_v we_o glorify_v he_o in_o his_o greatness_n another_o thing_n very_o observable_a such_o a_o wonderful_a manner_n in_o storm_v that_o city_n i_o have_v no_o skill_n in_o war_n but_o i_o think_v there_o be_v no_o people_n that_o go_v about_o storm_v but_o they_o resolve_v to_o lose_v many_o a_o man_n therefore_o they_o will_v do_v any_o thing_n rather_o than_o storm_n if_o it_o may_v be_v get_v otherwise_o and_o to_o storm_v such_o a_o city_n such_o fort_n such_o strength_n such_o a_o castle_n double_o line_v in_o some_o part_n and_o to_o do_v it_o by_o no_o very_a great_a army_n neither_o and_o that_o the_o lord_n shall_v please_v to_o preserve_v they_o that_o so_o few_o shall_v be_v slay_v or_o wound_v it_o be_v a_o wonderful_a mercy_n for_o true_o belove_v when_o there_o be_v but_o a_o few_o in_o the_o city_n when_o the_o other_o side_n seek_v it_o they_o have_v it_o not_o so_o cheap_a it_o cost_v they_o the_o life_n of_o many_o hundred_o of_o they_o but_o this_o be_v the_o lord_n goodness_n to_o his_o poor_a people_n and_o true_o we_o may_v say_v as_o david_n do_v here_o he_o have_v incline_v his_o ear_n to_o we_o and_o hear_v our_o prayer_n then_o a_o three_o blessing_n that_o i_o take_v notice_n of_o in_o it_o be_v pestilence_n 3._o in_o preserve_v it_o from_o the_o pestilence_n that_o god_n shall_v preserve_v our_o friend_n from_o the_o pestilence_n we_o always_o conceive_v that_o if_o they_o have_v that_o city_n they_o know_v not_o what_o to_o do_v with_o it_o because_o of_o the_o pestilence_n that_o may_v ruin_v and_o destroy_v the_o army_n after_o they_o have_v take_v it_o and_o as_o we_o hear_v though_o they_o be_v in_o the_o supper_n etc._n etc._n this_o be_v a_o three_o way_n four_o and_o last_o the_o saint_n live_v by_o faith_n that_o be_v in_o all_o affliction_n they_o do_v bear_v up_o their_o spirit_n and_o be_v support_v affliction_n 4._o it_o be_v their_o support_n in_o affliction_n by_o the_o power_n of_o faith_n upon_o the_o word_n though_o there_o be_v nothing_o see_v and_o appear_v a_o natural_a man_n can_v hold_v up_o but_o sink_v further_o than_o there_o be_v some_o sensible_a visible_a thing_n to_o hold_v he_o up_o but_o the_o just_a those_o that_o be_v saint_n they_o have_v a_o art_n a_o so_o go_v on_o as_o cheerful_o as_o if_o they_o do_v enjoy_v or_o as_o if_o they_o do_v see_v their_o deliverance_n thus_o habakkuk_n we_o read_v this_o proverb_n verse_n 1_o 2_o 3._o the_o vision_n the_o mean_a while_o the_o just_a shall_v live_v by_o his_o faith_n he_o shall_v drive_v on_o and_o carry_v on_o the_o work_n and_o bear_v up_o himself_o and_o his_o spirit_n and_o his_o comfort_n and_o all_o on_o the_o word_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o he_o shall_v do_v all_o this_o by_o his_o faith_n so_o that_o this_o be_v the_o lesson_n short_o though_o i_o be_v not_o able_a yet_o to_o clear_v this_o full_o to_o you_o for_o true_o this_o be_v a_o lesson_n wherein_o we_o still_o shall_v want_v light_n we_o be_v not_o able_a to_o see_v it_o perfect_o it_o be_v from_o faith_n to_o faith_n say_v the_o apostle_n that_o be_v we_o come_v from_o one_o degree_n of_o faith_n to_o another_o to_o live_v by_o faith_n there_o be_v many_o kind_n many_o degree_n of_o live_v by_o faith_n now_o this_o be_v it_o that_o i_o will_v commend_v to_o you_o and_o exhort_v you_o to_o that_o you_o will_v seek_v the_o lord_n and_o study_v the_o scripture_n that_o you_o may_v come_v to_o this_o that_o you_o may_v live_v by_o faith_n first_o of_o all_o in_o the_o grosser_n part_n of_o it_o concern_v sanctification_n that_o be_v a_o easy_a thing_n to_o be_v understand_v that_o you_o will_v not_o regard_v or_o weigh_v any_o thing_n in_o all_o your_o profession_n but_o what_o do_v come_v from_o jesus_n christ_n by_o faith_n true_o much_o of_o our_o religion_n be_v a_o natural_a kind_n of_o religion_n and_o much_o of_o that_o which_o be_v like_o good_a in_o we_o do_v not_o spring_n from_o jesus_n christ_n and_o whatsoever_o be_v not_o from_o he_o will_v never_o be_v accept_v by_o he_o we_o have_v many_o moral_a virtue_n from_o old_a adam_n that_o we_o gild_v over_o and_o account_v they_o grace_n but_o god_n loathe_v they_o we_o have_v many_o duty_n that_o we_o have_v take_v up_o in_o the_o imitation_n of_o other_o by_o good_a education_n or_o the_o power_n of_o the_o letter_n preach_v to_o we_o and_o yet_o this_o be_v not_o the_o life_n of_o faith_n it_o be_v not_o holiness_n by_o faith_n and_o therefore_o let_v we_o not_o like_o many_o professor_n study_v the_o muchness_n of_o religion_n or_o the_o plausiblenesse_n of_o it_o without_o as_o that_o i_o be_o able_a to_o preach_v as_o other_o preacher_n do_v and_o you_o be_v able_a to_o pray_v in_o a_o day_n of_o humiliation_n as_o other_o professor_n do_v this_o be_v nothing_o but_o let_v we_o labour_v that_o that_o little_a holiness_n that_o be_v in_o we_o may_v clear_o proceed_v from_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n one_o have_v better_o have_v a_o garden_n of_o a_o few_o true_a and_o pleasant_a flower_n though_o there_o be_v but_o a_o few_o then_o to_o have_v a_o garden_n with_o some_o flower_n and_o a_o world_n of_o trash_n like_o flower_n there_o be_v no_o pleasure_n in_o it_o now_o i_o fear_v that_o much_o of_o thy_o best_a duty_n spring_v from_o old_a adam_n much_o of_o thy_o best_a prayer_n and_o much_o it_o may_v be_v of_o that_o religion_n whereby_o thou_o be_v account_v a_o professor_n much_o of_o it_o i_o fear_v be_v nothing_o but_o old_a adam_n and_o his_o ruin_n screw_v up_o and_o varnish_v or_o gild_a and_o not_o from_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n and_o therefore_o remember_v this_o that_o as_o drunkenness_n and_o whoredom_n and_o those_o gross_a and_o scandalous_a work_n of_o darkness_n be_v call_v dead_a work_n so_o every_o grain_n every_o stamp_n of_o good_a in_o thou_o if_o it_o be_v not_o from_o the_o new_a adam_n it_o be_v but_o a_o dead_a work_n i_o can_v show_v you_o how_o you_o shall_v know_v the_o one_o from_o the_o other_o but_o that_o the_o build_v upon_o his_o word_n and_o covenant_n to_o hold_v myself_o and_o my_o assurance_n still_o i_o be_o a_o son_n still_o everlasting_a life_n belong_v to_o i_o still_o though_o i_o feel_v and_o see_v nothing_o but_o hell_n and_o something_o worse_a if_o it_o may_v be_v yet_o notwithstanding_o i_o be_o a_o saint_n and_o i_o be_o righteous_a and_o just_a and_o the_o lord_n be_v my_o father_n and_o have_v reserve_v everlasting_a life_n for_o i_o belove_a the_o life_n that_o christian_n ordinary_o do_v live_v it_o be_v a_o life_n mingle_v with_o faith_n and_o sense_n for_o if_o god_n give_v i_o free_a grace_n why_o shall_v not_o i_o rejoice_v in_o it_o if_o i_o clear_o see_v the_o first_o fruit_n of_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n why_o shall_v i_o exclude_v my_o reason_n not_o to_o go_v their_o faith_n be_v ground_v upon_o sense_n and_o i_o have_v oft_o time_n look_v in_o to_o my_o soul_n and_o think_v why_o the_o lord_n suffer_v i_o to_o be_v carry_v away_o with_o corruption_n
