for_o they_o teach_v that_o sin_n be_v not_o pardon_v in_o purgatory_n but_o those_o who_o be_v pardon_v before_o they_o die_v suffer_v the_o temporal_a punishment_n of_o their_o sin_n in_o purgatory_n whereas_o s._n austin_n do_v not_o pray_v that_o his_o mother_n may_v be_v deliver_v from_o the_o pain_n of_o purgatory_n but_o that_o god_n will_v forgive_v her_o sin_n the_o truth_n be_v how_o to_o reconcile_v but_o by_o say_v that_o when_o the_o church_n pray_v for_o saint_n and_o martyr_n prophet_n and_o apostle_n the_o meaning_n of_o her_o prayer_n be_v not_o to_o intercede_v with_o god_n for_o they_o but_o to_o praise_n god_n for_o their_o grace_n and_o virtue_n but_o when_o she_o pray_v for_o mean_a christian_n her_o prayer_n be_v intercession_n for_o pardon_n and_o rest_v to_o their_o soul_n and_o yet_o they_o be_v all_o pray_v for_o in_o the_o same_o form_n of_o word_n and_o the_o ancient_a church_n make_v no_o such_o distinction_n between_o they_o and_o thus_o he_o reconcile_v the_o matter_n by_o expound_v the_o same_o word_n to_o two_o different_a and_o contrary_a sense_n as_o they_o be_v apply_v to_o different_a subject_n which_o have_v teach_v the_o church_n of_o rome_n when_o occasion_n serve_v to_o soften_v her_o prayer_n by_o expound_v they_o contrary_a to_o the_o plain_a and_o natural_a signification_n of_o the_o word_n that_o the_o most_o direct_a and_o formal_a prayer_n to_o saint_n and_o the_o virgin_n for_o all_o temporal_a and_o spiritual_a blessing_n when_o they_o please_v shall_v signify_v no_o more_o than_o a_o bare_a ora_fw-la pro_fw-la nobis_fw-la pray_v for_o we_o about_o this_o time_n s._n chrysostom_n also_o in_o the_o greek_a church_n defend_v this_o practice_n of_o pray_v for_o the_o dead_a and_o yet_o the_o doctrine_n of_o purgatory_n never_o be_v receive_v in_o the_o greek_a church_n as_o appear_v from_o the_o council_n of_o florence_n which_o be_v a_o plain_a sign_n that_o though_o the_o roman_a doctor_n think_v they_o have_v prove_v purgatory_n if_o they_o can_v but_o prove_v that_o the_o ancient_a church_n use_v to_o pray_v for_o the_o dead_a which_o no_o body_n deny_v yet_o the_o greek_a church_n do_v not_o and_o do_v not_o to_o this_o day_n think_v this_o a_o good_a consequence_n for_o they_o pray_v for_o the_o dead_a but_o deny_v a_o popish_a purgatory_n which_o show_v that_o though_o they_o pray_v for_o the_o dead_a they_o do_v it_o for_o other_o reason_n than_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n now_o do_v and_o yet_o s._n chrysostom_n do_v not_o agree_v with_o s._n austin_n in_o that_o distinction_n he_o make_v of_o soul_n depart_v which_o show_v that_o there_o be_v no_o certain_a tradition_n about_o this_o matter_n but_o man_n of_o wit_n and_o learning_n frame_v different_a hypothesis_n and_o scheme_n of_o thing_n to_o themselves_o as_o they_o think_v they_o can_v best_o give_v a_o account_n of_o this_o practice_n for_o this_o be_v the_o thing_n both_o s._n austin_n and_o s._n chrysostom_n be_v intent_n on_o to_o justify_v the_o practice_n of_o the_o church_n so_o that_o their_o prayer_n for_o the_o dead_a may_v
not_o be_v think_v vain_a and_o hypocritical_a but_o whereas_o s._n austin_n distinguish_v soul_n depart_v into_o three_o order_n those_o who_o be_v so_o perfect_o good_a that_o they_o need_v not_o our_o prayer_n other_o less_o perfect_a to_o who_o our_o prayer_n be_v beneficial_a and_o a_o three_o sort_n so_o wicked_a that_o their_o estate_n be_v irrecoverable_a and_o so_o past_a the_o relief_n account_n condemn_v those_o extravagant_a expression_n of_o sorrow_n at_o their_o funeral_n and_o therefore_o he_o never_o think_v of_o a_o popish_a purgatory_n for_o i_o think_v we_o have_v great_a reason_n to_o lament_v those_o who_o be_v in_o purgatory_n a_o place_n of_o torment_n though_o not_o hell._n as_o for_o other_o he_o think_v 734._o they_o deserve_v our_o sorrow_n and_o compassion_n and_o prayer_n and_o alm_n not_o that_o this_o can_v deliver_v they_o out_o of_o the_o state_n of_o the_o damn_a but_o that_o he_o think_v it_o give_v some_o little_a ease_n and_o relief_n to_o
