because_o they_o pray_v for_o we_o in_o heaven_n just_a as_o christian_a brethren_n pray_v for_o one_o another_o on_o earth_n and_o therefore_o i_o must_v needs_o say_v the_o bishop_n have_v not_o true_o expound_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n in_o this_o point_n which_o make_v the_o saint_n to_o be_v our_o mediator_n in_o heaven_n not_o indeed_o mediator_n of_o redemption_n which_o she_o acknowledge_v none_o to_o be_v but_o christ_n who_o have_v purchase_v we_o with_o his_o own_o blood_n but_o mediator_n of_o intercession_n who_o have_v so_o much_o interest_n and_o favour_n in_o the_o court_n of_o heaven_n as_o powerful_o to_o recommend_v those_o to_o god_n who_o put_v themselves_o under_o their_o patronage_n this_o i_o confess_v make_v a_o great_a difference_n between_o the_o mediation_n of_o christ_n and_o of_o the_o saint_n and_o yet_o leave_v a_o great_a distance_n between_o the_o prayer_n of_o saint_n in_o heaven_n for_o we_o and_o the_o mutual_a intercession_n of_o christian_n for_o each_o other_o on_o earth_n and_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n never_o teach_v that_o they_o be_v of_o the_o same_o nature_n for_o though_o the_o catechism_n endeavour_v to_o prove_v that_o the_o mediation_n and_o intercession_n of_o the_o saint_n in_o heaven_n for_o we_o be_v not_o injurious_a to_o the_o mediation_n of_o christ_n because_o the_o prayer_n of_o christian_n for_o each_o other_o on_o earth_n be_v very_o reconcileable_a with_o the_o honour_n of_o christ_n intercession_n yet_o it_o never_o teach_v that_o there_o be_v no_o difference_n intercession_n of_o the_o saint_n in_o heaven_n be_v no_o more_o injurious_a to_o the_o mediation_n of_o christ_n than_o the_o prayer_n and_o intercession_n of_o the_o saint_n on_o earth_n for_o each_o other_o can_v be_v good_a without_o suppose_v that_o the_o intercession_n of_o the_o saint_n in_o heaven_n be_v of_o the_o very_a same_o nature_n with_o the_o prayer_n of_o christian_n for_o each_o other_o on_o earth_n and_o the_o bishop_n take_v the_o advantage_n to_o represent_v this_o as_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o church_n that_o she_o teach_v we_o to_o pray_v to_o saint_n in_o the_o same_o spirit_n of_o charity_n and_o according_a to_o the_o same_o order_n of_o fraternal_a society_n which_o move_v we_o to_o demand_v assistance_n of_o our_o brethren_n live_v upon_o earth_n but_o this_o i_o think_v be_v not_o reconcileable_a with_o the_o express_a word_n of_o the_o council_n of_o trent_n which_o find_v the_o invocation_n of_o saint_n upon_o their_o reign_v with_o misrepresenter_n now_o this_o be_v that_o which_o i_o undertake_v to_o prove_v in_o my_o reply_n that_o there_o be_v nothing_o of_o misrepresentation_n proper_o so_o call_v in_o his_o character_n of_o a_o papist_n misrepresent_v it_o be_v a_o false_a character_n indeed_o because_o it_o contain_v such_o thing_n as_o be_v not_o matter_n of_o representation_n but_o of_o dispute_n and_o therefore_o real_a difference_n between_o represent_v the_o doctrine_n and_o practice_n of_o papist_n and_o declare_v our_o own_o judgement_n and_o opinion_n concern_v they_o 20._o he_o suspect_v the_o people_n do_v not_o distinguish_v between_o antecedent_n and_o consequent_n between_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o papist_n and_o these_o interpretation_n and_o consequence_n charge_v on_o it_o they_o swallow_v all_o down_o greedy_o in_o the_o lump_n antecedent_n and_o consequent_n go_v down_o with_o they_o all_o at_o once_o but_o what_o do_v he_o mean_v by_o this_o that_o any_o protestant_a people_n be_v so_o silly_a as_o to_o think_v that_o papist_n believe_v as_o bad_a of_o their_o own_o religion_n as_o they_o believe_v of_o it_o that_o papist_n believe_v idolatry_n to_o be_v lawful_a as_o he_o tell_v we_o in_o the_o character_n of_o a_o papist_n misrepresent_v or_o that_o they_o believe_v the_o worship_n of_o a_o image_n to_o be_v idolatry_n no_o i_o assure_v he_o our_o people_n be_v teach_v what_o popery_n be_v in_o its_o genuine_a purity_n as_o he_o speak_v they_o know_v in_o the_o most_o material_a point_n what_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n be_v and_o be_v teach_v what_o to_o think_v of_o it_o and_o when_o they_o hear_v or_o read_v our_o dispute_n against_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n they_o be_v not_o so_o weak_a as_o to_o believe_v that_o we_o and_o papist_n have_v the_o same_o opinion_n about_o worship_a saint_n and_o image_n and_o the_o host_n etc._n etc._n and_o therefore_o be_v not_o in_o danger_n of_o affix_v such_o opinion_n on_o papist_n as_o they_o hear_v we_o charge_n on_o popery_n so_o that_o this_o be_v a_o very_a needless_a fear_n he_o be_v in_o and_o if_o nothing_o else_o hinder_v he_o may_v as_o he_o promise_v reform_v his_o benefit_n they_o expect_v from_o such_o prayer_n and_o intercession_n be_v only_o from_o the_o prevalency_n of_o faith_n and_o charity_n which_o inspire_v such_o prayer_n and_o make_v they_o efficacious_a god_n have_v command_v we_o to_o pray_v for_o one_o another_o and_o have_v promise_v to_o hear_v our_o unite_a fervent_a and_o importunate_a prayer_n for_o the_o merit_n of_o our_o common_a saviour_n jesus_n christ_n but_o those_o who_o pray_v to_o saint_n in_o heaven_n pray_v to_o they_o as_o favourite_n and_o mediator_n who_o prevail_v not_o mere_o by_o the_o force_n and_o efficacy_n of_o prayer_n but_o by_o their_o personal_a merit_n and_o interest_n with_o god_n and_o this_o make_v they_o just_o such_o mediator_n as_o christ_n be_v who_o by_o their_o power_n and_o interest_n can_v recommend_v we_o and_o our_o prayer_n to_o god_n acceptance_n no_o you_o will_v say_v christ_n purchase_v we_o with_o his_o blood_n and_o mediate_n in_o the_o virtue_n of_o his_o sacrifice_n which_o make_v his_o mediation_n of_o a_o different_a nature_n from_o the_o mediation_n of_o saint_n who_o mediate_a only_o by_o their_o interest_n with_o god_n upon_o account_n of_o first_o fruit_n to_o pray_v with_o we_o and_o for_o we_o to_o our_o common_a master_n in_o the_o name_n of_o our_o common_a mediator_n as_o for_o forsake_v jesus_n christ_n this_o we_o do_v not_o charge_v they_o with_o though_o whoever_o consider_v how_o much_o more_o frequent_a address_n be_v make_v in_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n to_o the_o virgin_n mary_n and_o some_o other_o powerful_a heaven_n with_o his_o own_o blood_n and_o there_o to_o appear_v in_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n for_o we_o his_o mediatory_a office_n be_v confine_v to_o heaven_n there_o he_o present_v our_o prayer_n to_o god_n in_o virtue_n of_o his_o own_o blood_n and_o this_o be_v as_o peculiar_a and_o appropriate_v to_o he_o as_o it_o be_v to_o the_o highpriest_n under_o the_o law_n to_o offer_v the_o blood_n of_o the_o sacrifice_n and_o make_v atonement_n and_o intercession_n in_o the_o holy_a of_o holies_n so_o that_o to_o present_v our_o prayer_n to_o god_n in_o heaven_n be_v the_o peculiar_a office_n of_o christ_n who_o be_v our_o great_a highpriest_n and_o only_a mediator_n in_o the_o immediate_a presence_n of_o god_n in_o heaven_n and_o to_o apply_v ourselves_o to_o any_o other_o and_o mediation_n of_o christ_n we_o shall_v see_v reason_n to_o think_v that_o this_o be_v very_o improper_o attribute_v to_o the_o saint_n in_o heaven_n for_o when_o we_o pray_v to_o god_n in_o the_o name_n of_o christ_n though_o we_o address_v our_o prayer_n immediate_o to_o god_n yet_o god_n do_v not_o receive_v they_o as_o come_v immediate_o from_o we_o but_o as_o present_v by_o the_o hand_n of_o our_o mediator_n which_o be_v the_o true_a meaning_n of_o pray_v to_o god_n in_o the_o name_n of_o christ_n that_o we_o offer_v our_o prayer_n to_o god_n not_o direct_o from_o ourselves_o for_o than_o we_o shall_v have_v no_o need_n of_o a_o mediator_n but_o by_o his_o hand_n who_o office_n it_o be_v to_o present_v they_o to_o god_n to_o appear_v in_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n for_o we_o which_o be_v therefore_o call_v come_v to_o god_n by_o he_o 25._o now_o this_o be_v very_o agreeable_a to_o the_o state_n and_o condition_n of_o christian_n on_o earth_n who_o be_v at_o a_o great_a distance_n from_o the_o immediate_a throne_n and_o presence_n of_o god_n to_o offer_v their_o prayer_n by_o the_o hand_n of_o a_o mediator_n who_o appear_v in_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n for_o they_o and_o the_o reason_n why_o we_o want_v a_o mediator_n to_o appear_v for_o we_o be_v because_o we_o be_v not_o yet_o
admit_v into_o god_n immediate_a presence_n ourselves_o but_o can_v every_o ordinary_a priest_n or_o jew_n have_v be_v admit_v into_o the_o holy_a of_o holies_n as_o the_o highpriest_n be_v they_o may_v as_o well_o have_v offer_v their_o prayer_n and_o sacrifice_n there_o immediate_o to_o god_n without_o the_o ministry_n and_o mediation_n of_o the_o highpriest_n and_o those_o who_o be_v in_o heaven_n in_o the_o immediate_a presence_n of_o god_n if_o they_o offer_v up_o any_o prayer_n to_o god_n for_o themselves_o or_o other_o they_o offer_v they_o immediate_o and_o direct_o to_o god_n because_o they_o offer_v they_o to_o god_n in_o his_o immediate_a presence_n which_o be_v the_o true_a notion_n of_o christ_n mediation_n that_o he_o appear_v in_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n for_o we_o and_o therefore_o whatever_o use_n there_o may_v be_v of_o the_o name_n of_o christ_n in_o heaven_n saint_n in_o heaven_n who_o live_v in_o the_o immediate_a presence_n of_o god_n have_v no_o need_n of_o a_o mediator_n to_o offer_v their_o prayer_n to_o god_n as_o saint_n on_o earth_n have_v because_o they_o be_v admit_v to_o the_o immediate_a vision_n of_o god_n themselves_o to_o offer_v up_o our_o prayer_n to_o god_n in_o the_o name_n and_o mediation_n of_o christ_n suppose_n that_o we_o be_v at_o a_o distance_n from_o god_n and_o not_o admit_v into_o his_o presence_n to_o speak_v for_o ourselves_o but_o those_o prayer_n which_o be_v offer_v to_o god_n in_o his_o immediate_a presence_n need_v no_o mediator_n to_o present_v they_o and_o yet_o to_o say_v that_o the_o saint_n in_o heaven_n offer_v their_o prayer_n to_o god_n in_o the_o name_n and_o mediation_n of_o christ_n be_v to_o say_v that_o when_o they_o be_v admit_v to_o the_o immediate_a presence_n of_o god_n themselves_o they_o still_o need_v a_o mediator_n that_o the_o prayer_n they_o offer_v to_o god_n in_o his_o immediate_a presence_n they_o do_v not_o offer_v immediate_o to_o he_o but_o by_o the_o hand_n of_o a_o mediator_n which_o if_o it_o be_v sense_n i_o be_o sure_a be_v no_o good_a divinity_n as_o neither_o agree_n with_o the_o type_n of_o the_o law_n nor_o with_o the_o gospel-account_n of_o christ_n mediation_n and_o therefore_o if_o glorify_a saint_n appear_v for_o we_o in_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n in_o heaven_n they_o be_v as_o much_o our_o mediator_n as_o christ_n be_v for_o this_o be_v the_o most_o essential_a character_n of_o this_o mediation_n that_o he_o appear_v in_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n for_o we_o the_o only_a objection_n i_o can_v foresee_v against_o this_o be_v that_o some_o of_o the_o ancient_a father_n though_o they_o do_v not_o pray_v to_o saint_n to_o pray_v for_o they_o yet_o be_v incline_v to_o believe_v that_o saint_n depart_v do_v pray_v for_o the_o church_n on_o earth_n especial_o for_o their_o particular_a friend_n which_o they_o leave_v behind_o they_o and_o therefore_o to_o be_v sure_o do_v not_o think_v this_o any_o injury_n to_o the_o mediation_n of_o christ._n but_o then_o we_o must_v consider_v that_o as_o they_o speak_v doubtful_o of_o this_o matter_n so_o those_o very_a father_n do_v not_o believe_v that_o saint_n depart_v be_v receive_v up_o into_o the_o high_a heaven_n into_o the_o immediate_a presence_n and_o throne_n of_o god_n though_o they_o think_v they_o in_o a_o very_a happy_a state_n yet_o not_o perfect_a till_o the_o resurrection_n and_o therefore_o they_o pray_v for_o saint_n depart_v as_o well_o as_o believe_v that_o saint_n depart_v pray_v for_o they_o now_o any_o mediation_n and_o intercession_n on_o this_o side_n heaven_n be_v very_o consistent_a with_o the_o mediation_n of_o christ_n in_o heaven_n but_o to_o intercede_v in_o heaven_n be_v his_o peculiar_a office_n which_o no_o other_o creature_n more_o than_o he_o do_v her_o son_n or_o god_n the_o father_n for_o one_o prayer_n he_o say_v to_o god_n say_v ten_o to_o the_o holy_a virgin_n let_v we_o then_o consider_v how_o much_o of_o misrepresentation_n there_o be_v in_o this_o and_o i_o shall_v begin_v with_o the_o last_o first_o because_o man_n action_n be_v the_o best_a interpreter_n of_o their_o thought_n and_o belief_n the_o papist_n for_o one_o prayer_n he_o say_v to_o god_n say_v ten_o to_o the_o virgin_n mary_n be_v this_o misrepresent_v let_v he_o but_o tell_v over_o his_o bead_n and_o see_v how_o many_o ave_fw-la when_o they_o pray_v to_o mary_n the_o mother_n of_o jesus_n it_o be_v a_o
