mix_v the_o controversy_n of_o faith_n with_o their_o public_a form_n of_o worship_n and_o have_v make_v their_o liturgy_n instead_o of_o be_v office_n of_o devotion_n to_o god_n become_v test_n and_o censure_n of_o the_o opinion_n of_o their_o brethren_n but_o yet_o when_o all_o be_v do_v the_o truth_n of_o christianity_n must_v not_o be_v sacrifice_v to_o the_o peace_n of_o christian_n nor_o the_o honour_n of_o god_n be_v give_v up_o to_o keep_v up_o a_o unity_n and_o communion_n with_o one_o another_o but_o where_o man_n difference_n be_v in_o point_n that_o do_v not_o at_o all_o affect_v their_o religious_a service_n or_o not_o so_o much_o but_o that_o god_n may_v be_v very_o well_o worship_v and_o yet_o communion_n with_o our_o fellow_n christian_n preserve_v too_o in_o such_o case_n as_o this_o our_o dissension_n ought_v not_o only_o not_o to_o lessen_v our_o charity_n but_o not_o to_o break_v our_o unity_n neither_o we_o may_v continue_v to_o differ_v as_o the_o christian_n in_o my_o text_n do_v and_o yet_o with_o one_o mind_n and_o one_o mouth_n glorify_v god_n as_o st._n paul_n exhort_v they_o to_o do_v and_o this_o bring_v i_o to_o the_o three_o and_o last_o point_n three_o that_o to_o this_o end_n 3._o it_o be_v the_o duty_n of_o all_o of_o we_o but_o especial_o of_o the_o strong_a christian_n not_o only_o to_o pray_v for_o such_o a_o union_n catholic_n church_n on_o earth_n so_o many_o be_v the_o dispute_n that_o have_v arisen_a among_o the_o several_a party_n and_o communion_n of_o it_o and_o some_o of_o they_o in_o point_n so_o near_o to_o the_o foundation_n of_o christianity_n that_o whilst_o man_n resolve_v to_o keep_v fast_o to_o their_o conclusion_n and_o will_v not_o suffer_v the_o plain_a argument_n to_o convince_v they_o of_o their_o error_n it_o be_v in_o vain_a to_o hope_v ever_o to_o see_v thing_n bring_v to_o such_o a_o temper_n as_o we_o can_v wish_v in_o that_o but_o especial_o whilst_o that_o part_n which_o be_v the_o most_o corrupt_a be_v so_o far_o from_o be_v willing_a to_o concur_v to_o any_o such_o union_n that_o on_o the_o contrary_a she_o have_v cut_v off_o all_o possibility_n of_o attain_v it_o and_o by_o arrogate_a a_o unwarrantable_a infallibility_n to_o herself_o and_o authority_n over_o all_o other_o will_v neither_o reform_v she_o own_o abuse_n nor_o admit_v any_o into_o her_o communion_n that_o will_v not_o profess_v the_o same_o error_n in_o which_o she_o herself_o stand_v involve_v so_o that_o here_o all_o we_o can_v even_o wish_v for_o be_v that_o man_n will_v at_o last_o be_v so_o wise_a as_o though_o they_o differ_v in_o opinion_n yet_o to_o love_v as_o brethren_n and_o agree_v together_o in_o a_o common_a charity_n till_o we_o shall_v be_v so_o happy_a as_o to_o unite_v in_o a_o common_a faith_n and_o worship_n of_o god_n but_o for_o we_o who_o it_o have_v please_v god_n by_o deliver_v we_o from_o the_o error_n and_o superstition_n of_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n to_o unite_v together_o in_o the_o common_a name_n of_o protestant_n reform_v christian_n will_v we_o but_o as_o hearty_o labour_n after_o peace_n as_o we_o be_v all_o of_o we_o very_o high_o exhort_v to_o it_o i_o can_v see_v why_o we_o who_o be_v so_o happy_o join_v together_o in_o a_o common_a profession_n of_o the_o same_o faith_n at_o least_o i_o be_o sure_a in_o all_o the_o necessary_a point_n of_o it_o and_o i_o hope_v amid_o all_o our_o lesser_a difference_n in_o a_o common_a love_n and_o charity_n to_o one_o another_o shall_v not_o also_o be_v unite_v in_o the_o same_o common_a worship_n of_o god_n too_o i_o will_v not_o now_o enter_v into_o any_o dispute_n to_o show_v how_o little_a reason_n there_o be_v for_o any_o one_o to_o separate_v from_o the_o office_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n upon_o the_o account_n of_o those_o
not_o see_v how_o any_o good_a christian_a can_v with_o a_o good_a conscience_n so_o frequent_o neglect_v in_o the_o mean_a time_n this_o be_v the_o sum_n of_o all_o he_o that_o despise_v this_o memory_n ii_o i_o will_v lay_v before_o you_o some_o instance_n of_o that_o additional_a worship_n which_o those_o of_o the_o other_o church_n pretend_v be_v due_a to_o she_o iii_o i_o will_v offer_v some_o of_o those_o reason_n for_o which_o we_o think_v such_o a_o worship_n to_o be_v unlawful_a and_o therefore_o refuse_v to_o give_v it_o to_o she_o i._o i_o begin_v with_o the_o first_o of_o which_o enquiry_n i_o shall_v lay_v down_o this_o plain_a and_o i_o suppose_v undeniable_a foundation_n viz._n that_o however_o some_o have_v be_v please_v to_o exalt_v the_o glory_n and_o prerogative_n of_o the_o holy_a mary_n to_o a_o very_a great_a indeed_o to_o a_o extravagant_a degree_n so_o as_o hardly_o to_o leave_v any_o comparison_n between_o she_o and_o any_o other_o creature_n whether_o in_o heaven_n or_o earth_n yet_o since_o they_o still_o confess_v she_o to_o be_v but_o a_o mere_a creature_n the_o measure_n we_o must_v take_v whereby_o to_o judge_v what_o honour_n which_o any_o creature_n in_o the_o same_o circumstance_n be_v fit_a to_o receive_v or_o which_o it_o may_v be_v either_o lawful_a or_o reasonable_a for_o we_o to_o offer_v to_o such_o a_o votary_n not_o a_o act_n of_o piety_n record_v in_o her_o life_n but_o our_o church_n exhort_v we_o to_o transcribe_v it_o into_o we_o we_o may_v and_o god_n know_v we_o do_v come_v very_o much_o famous_a than_o for_o their_o extraordinary_a devotion_n to_o the_o holy_a mary_n i_o shall_v soon_o run_v beyond_o the_o bound_n of_o such_o a_o discourse_n as_o this_o i_o will_v rather_o choose_v here_o to_o confine_v myself_o to_o a_o very_a few_o and_o those_o only_a general_a remark_n and_o first_o it_o be_v the_o very_a foundation_n of_o all_o that_o superstitious_a service_n which_o be_v nowadays_o pay_v to_o she_o in_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n to_o suppose_v the_o excellency_n of_o the_o bless_a virgin_n to_o be_v incomparable_o above_o that_o of_o any_o other_o saint_n whatsoever_o so_o that_o whereas_o all_o other_o saint_n be_v to_o be_v worship_v only_o with_o that_o inferior_a religious_a worship_n which_o they_o call_v dulia_n the_o bless_a virgin_n alone_o be_v to_o be_v serve_v with_o a_o hyperdulia_fw-la or_o a_o supereminent_a sort_n of_o religious_a service_n and_o that_o upon_o these_o three_o account_n which_o therefore_o one_o of_o their_o own_o author_n have_v set_v down_o for_o we_o 1._o in_o that_o when_o god_n dignify_v she_o with_o the_o excellency_n of_o be_v the_o mother_n of_o jesus_n 4._o he_o therewith_o create_v she_o the_o queen_n of_o angel_n patroness_n of_o the_o church_n and_o advocate_n of_o sinner_n and_o that_o therefore_o as_o such_o she_o ought_v to_o be_v honour_v above_o they_o 5._o 2._o because_o the_o veneration_n the_o bless_a virgin_n a_o capacity_n to_o understand_v all_o the_o prayer_n that_o be_v every_o where_o make_v to_o she_o it_o be_v a_o subject_a that_o have_v long_o entertain_v the_o mind_n and_o exercise_v the_o pen_n of_o the_o votary_n of_o the_o virgin_n mary_n and_o the_o saint_n how_o or_o by_o what_o mean_v it_o be_v that_o they_o understand_v all_o the_o prayer_n that_o be_v any_o where_o make_v to_o they_o by_o any_o of_o their_o suppliant_n on_o earth_n and_o i_o do_v not_o find_v that_o either_o they_o yet_o be_v or_o seem_v at_o all_o likely_a ever_o to_o be_v agree_v on_o this_o point_n but_o thus_o far_o they_o appear_v to_o be_v all_o of_o they_o well_o assure_v that_o by_o whatever_o mean_v it_o be_v their_o prayer_n be_v some_o way_n or_o other_o most_o certain_o convey_v to_o they_o because_o that_o otherwise_o it_o will_v be_v a_o most_o senseless_a and_o absurd_a practice_n to_o call_v upon_o they_o 83._o i_o shall_v not_o here_o dispute_v the_o power_n of_o god_n what_o he_o can_v do_v as_o to_o this_o matter_n or_o what_o for_o aught_o i_o know_v he_o may_v do_v at_o some_o time_n and_o on_o some_o certain_a occasion_n in_o extraordinary_o reveal_v many_o of_o those_o thing_n to_o the_o saint_n above_o which_o be_v do_v by_o we_o here_o below_o it_o be_v plain_a this_o can_v be_v no_o sufficient_a foundation_n of_o constant_a prayer_n to_o they_o in_o all_o place_n and_o on_o all_o occasion_n 15._o that_o god_n may_v possible_o sometime_o communicate_v some_o thing_n to_o they_o unless_o we_o can_v be_v sure_a what_o thing_n and_o at_o what_o time_n and_o to_o what_o saint_n he_o do_v this_o god_n may_v if_o he_o please_v communicate_v what_o i_o speak_v here_o to_o my_o friend_n abroad_o in_o another_o part_n of_o the_o world_n but_o he_o will_v hardly_o be_v think_v very_o well_o in_o his_o wit_n who_o shall_v on_o this_o possibility_n every_o day_n in_o a_o very_a solemn_a manner_n entreat_v his_o prayer_n or_o ask_v some_o courtesy_n of_o he_o to_o render_v all_o the_o prayer_n of_o all_o man_n 20._o at_o any_o time_n or_o in_o any_o place_n a_o wise_a and_o rational_a service_n it_o be_v plain_a they_o must_v suppose_v that_o the_o saint_n above_o and_o in_o particular_a that_o the_o bless_a virgin_n have_v a_o certain_a and_o distinct_a knowledge_n of_o all_o the_o action_n word_n and_o even_o of_o the_o most_o secret_a thought_n forasmuch_o as_o they_o allow_v of_o mental_a as_o well_o as_o vocal_a prayer_n to_o she_o of_o all_o man_n here_o upon_o earth_n but_o to_o ascribe_v such_o a_o power_n to_o she_o be_v to_o raise_v she_o above_o the_o state_n of_o a_o mere_a creature_n to_o invest_v she_o with_o some_o of_o the_o most_o proper_a and_o incommunicable_a attribute_n of_o god_n and_o in_o divinity_n and_o as_o some_o have_v not_o doubt_v to_o call_v they_o make_v god_n by_o participation_n 223â—_n that_o be_v partaker_n of_o the_o immensity_n and_o other_o prerogative_n of_o god_n but_o let_v those_o who_o presume_v to_o allow_v this_o to_o any_o saint_n in_o heaven_n consider_v a_o little_a who_o it_o be_v that_o have_v say_v i_o be_o the_o lord_n that_o be_v my_o name_n and_o my_o glory_n will_v i_o not_o give_v unto_o another_o and_o certain_o then_o they_o will_v see_v some_o cause_n if_o not_o to_o correct_v their_o own_o ungrounded_a error_n in_o this_o matter_n yet_o at_o least_o to_o think_v a_o little_a more_o favourable_o of_o we_o that_o we_o dare_v not_o presume_v to_o join_v with_o they_o in_o it_o but_o second_o the_o second_o point_n wherein_o we_o suppose_v they_o to_o have_v err_v in_o their_o opinion_n of_o the_o bless_a virgin_n be_v that_o they_o ascribe_v to_o she_o the_o right_n of_o a_o mediatrix_fw-la to_o intercede_v for_o we_o now_o by_o a_o right_n of_o intercede_v for_o we_o i_o do_v not_o mean_v such_o a_o intercession_n as_o the_o faithful_a here_o upon_o earth_n many_o time_n make_v for_o one_o another_o when_o they_o put_v up_o their_o prayer_n to_o god_n to_o forgive_v their_o sin_n or_o to_o grant_v they_o any_o blessing_n which_o they_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o whether_o the_o saint_n above_o do_v in_o general_n pray_v for_o we_o or_o no_o be_v a_o point_n which_o none_o of_o we_o can_v certain_o resolve_v and_o therefore_o be_v not_o fit_a to_o be_v dispute_v by_o any_o that_o they_o have_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o love_n and_o charity_n for_o we_o be_v not_o to_o be_v doubt_v but_o how_o they_o express_v it_o god_n have_v no_o where_o think_v fit_a to_o declare_v to_o we_o nor_o be_v it_o therefore_o either_o fit_a or_o needful_a for_o we_o to_o inquire_v into_o it_o the_o intercession_n which_o i_o here_o mean_v be_v of_o another_o nature_n and_o imply_v such_o a_o kind_n of_o prayer_n as_o be_v found_v on_o the_o merit_n of_o the_o person_n that_o intercede_v whereby_o he_o be_v able_a to_o plead_v a_o right_n to_o god_n mercy_n so_o that_o we_o may_v entreat_v god_n for_o his_o merit_n to_o grant_v we_o his_o pardon_n and_o forgiveness_n now_o that_o this_o be_v the_o true_a notion_n which_o those_o of_o the_o roman_a church_n have_v both_o in_o general_a of_o a_o mediator_n and_o in_o particular_a of_o the_o bless_a virgin_n when_o they_o address_v to_o she_o as_o their_o advocate_n be_v not_o only_o clear_a from_o the_o very_a address_n themselves_o which_o they_o make_v to_o she_o but_o be_v moreover_o acknowledge_v by_o themselves_o in_o the_o account_n they_o give_v we_o of_o this_o power_n which_o they_o ascribe_v to_o she_o i_o have_v before_o observe_v from_o one_o of_o their_o own_o author_n 14._o that_o to_o be_v a_o mediator_n and_o to_o discharge_v the_o office_n of_o such_o a_o one_o three_o thing_n be_v require_v viz._n first_o but_o the_o whole_a analogy_n of_o the_o old_a and_o new_a testament_n assure_v we_o of_o it_o 1._o if_o first_o we_o consider_v the_o express_a word_n of_o holy_a scripture_n what_o can_v be_v more_o plain_a than_o that_o declaration_n of_o s._n paul_n to_o timothy_n 1_o epist._n two_o 5_o that_o to_o we_o christian_n there_o be_v as_o but_o one_o god_n so_o but_o one_o mediator_n between_o god_n and_o man_n the_o man_n christ_n jesus_n who_o give_v himself_o a_o ransom_n for_o all_o for_o if_o there_o be_v but_o one_o mediator_n and_o that_o the_o man_n christ_n jesus_n how_o then_o be_v the_o virgin_n mary_n too_o our_o advocate_n in_o heaven_n if_o the_o foundation_n of_o christ_n intercession_n for_o we_o be_v build_v upon_o his_o death_n as_o this_o text_n plain_o declare_v so_o that_o he_o be_v therefore_o our_o mediator_n to_o intercede_v for_o we_o in_o heaven_n because_o he_o be_v our_o sacrifice_n and_o propitiation_n i._n e._n our_o mediator_n of_o redemption_n on_o earth_n if_o the_o intercession_n which_o he_o make_v for_o we_o be_v this_o that_o god_n have_v covenant_v with_o he_o to_o forgive_v we_o if_o he_o will_v lay_v down_o his_o life_n for_o we_o our_o saviour_n christ_n have_v do_v this_o do_v therefore_o now_o in_o right_a of_o this_o covenant_n represent_v his_o death_n and_o passion_n to_o his_o father_n for_o our_o forgiveness_n than_o it_o must_v follow_v that_o as_o the_o bless_a virgin_n have_v neither_o any_o merit_n of_o this_o kind_a to_o plead_v nor_o do_v god_n ever_o enter_v into_o any_o covenant_n with_o she_o to_o accept_v of_o any_o thing_n she_o do_v in_o order_n to_o our_o salvation_n so_o neither_o have_v she_o any_o right_a to_o intercede_v for_o we_o in_o heaven_n nor_o ought_v we_o therefore_o to_o pray_v to_o she_o so_o to_o do_v it_o be_v i_o know_v a_o distinction_n which_o some_o here_o make_v use_n of_o when_o force_v by_o the_o evidence_n of_o truth_n to_o confess_v christ_n to_o be_v our_o only_a mediator_n that_o there_o be_v two_o sort_n of_o mediator_n one_o of_o redemption_n the_o other_o of_o intercession_n that_o christ_n only_o be_v our_o mediator_n of_o redemption_n and_o alone_o can_v for_o the_o people_n under_o the_o law_n with_o our_o saviour_n christ_n intercede_v for_o we_o in_o heaven_n it_o be_v the_o ordinance_n of_o god_n under_o the_o moysaicall_a dispensation_n that_o upon_o the_o great_a day_n of_o expiation_n the_o highpriest_n shall_v offer_v a_o propitiatory_a sacrifice_n for_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o whole_a people_n and_o then_o carry_v the_o blood_n of_o the_o sacrifice_n into_o the_o most_o holy_a place_n and_o present_v it_o before_o god_n and_o so_o make_v a_o expiation_n for_o they_o now_o the_o law_n have_v a_o shadow_n of_o good_a thing_n to_o mediator_n to_o this_o i_o answer_v first_o that_o what_o the_o bless_a virgin_n and_o the_o other_o saint_n may_v do_v as_o to_o this_o matter_n be_v unknown_a to_o we_o in_o general_n they_o may_v possible_o pray_v to_o god_n to_o endue_v we_o with_o his_o grace_n whereby_o we_o may_v repent_v and_o be_v save_v but_o then_o neither_o have_v we_o any_o assurance_n that_o they_o do_v this_o much_o less_o that_o they_o do_v it_o in_o particular_a for_o every_o single_a person_n that_o call_v upon_o they_o neither_o if_o they_o do_v will_v this_o entitule_fw-la they_o to_o the_o name_n and_o dignity_n of_o mediator_n proper_o so_o call_v nor_o warrant_v we_o to_o pray_v to_o they_o as_o such_o second_o much_o less_o will_v this_o be_v sufficient_a to_o engage_v we_o to_o put_v they_o in_o a_o equal_a rank_n of_o mediation_n with_o christ_n himself_n to_o join_v his_o merit_n and_o they_o together_o and_o pray_v to_o god_n that_o for_o our_o saviour_n and_o the_o virgin_n be_v sake_n he_o will_v forgive_v we_o which_o yet_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n most_o notorious_o do_v and_o beside_o for_o what_o concern_v our_o present_a purpose_n three_o this_o be_v not_o all_o they_o allow_v to_o the_o holy_a mary_n when_o they_o call_v upon_o she_o as_o their_o advocate_n no_o they_o tell_v we_o plain_o as_o you_o have_v before_o see_v that_o she_o obtain_v nothing_o of_o god_n but_o what_o she_o have_v merit_v for_o we_o she_o have_v join_v her_o action_n and_o suffering_n to_o those_o of_o christ_n for_o the_o salvation_n of_o mankind_n and_o god_n have_v accept_v ascribe_v the_o eight_o last_o compellation_n we_o meet_v with_o in_o her_o litany_n and_o by_o which_o she_o be_v set_v forth_o to_o we_o as_o queen_n of_o angel_n patriarch_n prophet_n apostle_n martyr_n confessor_n virgin_n and_o all_o saint_n and_o in_o all_o which_o if_o there_o be_v not_o some_o excess_n yet_o doubtless_o there_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o presumption_n and_o of_o the_o vain_a leaven_n of_o humane_a folly_n and_o ambition_n to_o call_v upon_o god_n himself_o in_o a_o multiplicity_n of_o attribute_n which_o be_v neither_o pertinent_a to_o our_o purpose_n nor_o otherwise_o apt_a to_o raise_v those_o affection_n in_o our_o soul_n that_o be_v proper_a to_o the_o holy_a exercise_n we_o be_v about_o be_v a_o argument_n of_o our_o weakness_n and_o vanity_n rather_o than_o a_o instance_n of_o a_o reasonable_a and_o religious_a respect_n but_o to_o set_v up_o a_o poor_a humble_a woman_n in_o such_o a_o formal_a pageantry_n of_o majesty_n and_o glory_n to_o address_v to_o saint_n in_o heaven_n as_o if_o they_o value_v the_o little_a ceremony_n and_o title_n to_o which_o man_n on_o earth_n aspire_v this_o be_v at_o best_a to_o show_v a_o mind_n too_o much_o affect_v with_o the_o vanity_n of_o this_o world_n but_o to_o do_v it_o without_o all_o warrant_n from_o god_n or_o so_o much_o as_o the_o least_o signification_n of_o his_o pleasure_n in_o it_o be_v i_o think_v too_o near_o a_o presumptuous_a impiety_n but_o these_o be_v not_o the_o title_n that_o the_o most_o offend_v we_o other_o there_o be_v which_o we_o esteem_v by_o so_o much_o the_o more_o dangerous_a by_o how_o much_o the_o more_o they_o encroach_v on_o the_o peculiar_a attribute_n of_o god_n and_o our_o bless_a saviour_n for_o indeed_o to_o who_o else_o can_v it_o belong_v to_o be_v esteem_v the_o help_n of_o christian_n the_o comforter_n of_o the_o afflict_a the_o refuge_n of_o sinner_n the_o gate_n of_o heaven_n the_o ark_n of_o the_o covenant_n the_o câ—â—se_n of_o our_o joy_n the_o seat_n of_o wisdom_n and_o mirror_n of_o justice_n but_o to_o he_o alone_o who_o be_v the_o author_n and_o finisher_n of_o our_o faith_n from_o who_o all_o help_n
