quiet_a there_o be_v many_o that_o have_v be_v divers_a year_n labour_v and_o take_v pain_n to_o get_v their_o conscience_n to_o be_v quiet_a and_o can_v but_o their_o conscience_n ever_o and_o anon_o will_v be_v fly_v in_o their_o face_n &_o trouble_v of_o they_o and_o yet_o they_o be_v such_o people_n as_o dare_v not_o commit_v any_o know_a sin_n dare_v not_o neglect_v any_o know_a duty_n be_v constant_a in_o prayer_n in_o secret_a attend_v upon_o the_o word_n and_o whensoever_o they_o hear_v of_o a_o duty_n that_o they_o shall_v perform_v they_o labour_v to_o set_v upon_o it_o withal_o their_o might_n but_o alas_o they_o feel_v little_a sweetness_n and_o comfort_n in_o

therefore_o there_o be_v no_o rest_v in_o that_o condition_n come_v therefore_o to_o i_o take_v my_o yoke_n my_o easy_a yoke_n the_o other_o be_v a_o heavy_a yoke_n but_o i_o will_v show_v you_o a_o endeavour_v to_o obey_v to_o the_o uttermost_a that_o we_o can_v there_o be_v many_o man_n will_v require_v thing_n that_o be_v hard_a and_o beyond_o strength_n i_o but_o when_o there_o be_v endeavour_n to_o do_v that_o that_o be_v require_v that_o will_v be_v accept_v wherefore_o we_o be_v to_o know_v this_o that_o the_o law_n accept_v of_o no_o endeavour_n though_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n shall_v strive_v their_o heart_n out_o to_o obey_v to_o come_v to_o the_o height_n of_o the_o perfection_n of_o the_o law_n the_o law_n do_v not_o accept_v of_o those_o endeavour_n it_o be_v true_a when_o the_o soul_n come_v unto_o christ_n in_o the_o gospel_n when_o the_o soul_n come_v under_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n endeavour_n be_v accept_v therefore_o do_v not_o say_v that_o grace_n so_o long_o as_o you_o be_v under_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n there_o the_o work_n be_v call_v for_o and_o not_o mere_o endeavour_n that_o will_v not_o do_v therefore_o the_o apostle_n say_v in_o the_o rom._n 10.5_o for_o moses_n describe_v the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o law_n that_o he_o which_o do_v those_o thing_n shall_v live_v by_o they_o you_o must_v either_o be_v righteous_a by_o the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o law_n or_o by_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n now_o if_o you_o will_v be_v righteous_a by_o the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o law_n hear_v what_o it_o be_v he_o that_o do_v these_o thing_n shall_v live_v by_o they_o if_o you_o do_v they_o moses_n do_v not_o say_v he_o that_o endeavour_v to_o do_v these_o thing_n he_o that_o strive_v to_o do_v that_o all_o natural_o be_v under_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n and_o so_o long_o as_o i_o be_o in_o my_o natural_a condition_n i_o be_o under_o such_o a_o law_n that_o accept_v of_o no_o endeavour_n more_o bright_a and_o better_o they_o will_v grow_v so_o it_o be_v with_o those_o that_o perform_v duty_n in_o the_o strength_n of_o a_o natural_a conscience_n they_o will_v wear_v away_o and_o that_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o they_o leave_v they_o off_o but_o one_o that_o perform_v duty_n in_o a_o evangelical_n way_n the_o more_o he_o do_v the_o more_o he_o shall_v be_v able_a to_o do_v and_o forth_o and_o go_v to_o it_o again_o and_o spend_v half_a a_o day_n or_o a_o whole_a day_n together_o in_o study_v meditate_v &_o write_v and_o see_v if_o you_o do_v not_o find_v it_o more_o tedious_a and_o
tiresome_a to_o the_o flesh_n than_o any_o other_o work_n but_o now_o scholar_n though_o it_o be_v tiresome_a to_o the_o flesh_n they_o can_v go_v on_o and_o make_v it_o easy_a to_o they_o why_o because_o they_o find_v sweetness_n in_o their_o work_n it_o be_v not_o with_o they_o as_o with_o â—ther_a man_n other_o man_n work_v that_o they_o may_v have_v wage_n afterward_o but_o all_o the_o while_o they_o be_v about_o their_o work_n they_o have_v truth_n come_v in_o and_o heavenly_a notion_n come_v in_o to_o they_o while_o they_o be_v about_o it_o and_o so_o make_v the_o work_n easy_a those_o that_o be_v draw_v to_o holy_a duty_n they_o will_v not_o abide_v as_o it_o be_v say_v the_o son_n abide_v in_o the_o house_n but_o a_o servant_n abide_v not_o always_o in_o the_o house_n so_o such_o as_o perform_v duty_n in_o a_o legal_a way_n they_o will_v be_v go_v they_o will_v not_o abide_v but_o now_o one_o that_o be_v come_v into_o christ_n and_o have_v a_o sonlike_a disposition_n he_o continue_v as_o we_o say_v in_o philosophy_n no_o violent_a thing_n or_o motion_n be_v perpetual_a and_o indeed_o those_o that_o perform_v duty_n in_o a_o legal_a way_n a_o hundred_o to_o one_o but_o they_o will_v prove_v apostate_n at_o last_o but_o one_o that_o perform_v duty_n in_o a_o evangelical_n way_n will_v continue_v and_o hold_v out_o unto_o the_o end_n iii_o the_o main_a use_n of_o all_o be_v to_o stir_v up_o the_o heart_n of_o those_o that_o be_v godly_a to_o know_v what_o the_o gospel_n mean_v to_o exercise_v much_o faith_n in_o christ_n that_o they_o may_v have_v much_o comfort_n in_o performance_n of_o duty_n do_v not_o content_v thyself_o that_o thou_o do_v duty_n but_o think_v with_o thyself_o oh_o i_o have_v hear_v of_o such_o a_o way_n that_o christian_n in_o cheerful_a giver_n and_o so_o he_o love_v a_o cheerful_a server_n you_o love_v to_o hear_v your_o servant_n sing_v at_o their_o work_n but_o if_o you_o set_v your_o child_n or_o servant_n about_o a_o work_n and_o he_o go_v heavy_o and_o dull_o about_o be_v grumble_a and_o pine_v and_o think_v you_o to_o be_v a_o hard_a master_n than_o he_o do_v but_o a_o little_a work_n so_o they_o that_o perform_v duty_n in_o a_o legal_a way_n the_o truth_n be_v they_o perform_v little_a duty_n and_o that_o be_v not_o acceptable_a but_o when_o a_o soul_n come_v to_o find_v rest_n in_o duty_n it_o make_v it_o more_o spiritual_a more_o plentiful_a and_o more_o acceptable_a and_o those_o duty_n be_v very_o please_v unto_o the_o lord_n chap._n xxxvi_o show_v the_o rest_n from_o the_o remainder_n of_o corruption_n to_o be_v sanctification_n and_o that_o to_o be_v a_o great_a rest_n lay_v open_a in_o six_o particular_n 1._o it_o be_v the_o right_a temper_n of_o the_o heart_n 2._o in_o it_o deliverance_n from_o the_o trouble_n of_o soul_n in_o the_o sense_n of_o the_o guilt_n of_o sin_n that_o be_v before_o speak_v of_o but_o now_o we_o be_v to_o speak_v of_o the_o rest_n in_o give_v power_n against_o the_o remainder_n of_o corruption_n that_o there_o be_v in_o the_o heart_n this_o rest_n be_v the_o rest_n of_o sanctification_n that_o here_o we_o be_v to_o speak_v of_o i_o will_v give_v you_o rest_n and_o in_o this_o point_n there_o be_v a_o great_a many_o of_o useful_a and_o sweet_a thing_n that_o may_v require_v very_o large_a handle_n but_o i_o shall_v endeavour_v as_o much_o as_o i_o can_v to_o contract_v all_o within_o a_o few_o thing_n for_o this_o rest_n of_o sanctification_n there_o be_v in_o it_o these_o five_o thing_n to_o be_v follow_v that_o you_o may_v see_v clear_o the_o method_n that_o i_o shall_v proceed_v in_o and_o so_o go_v along_o with_o i_o first_o i_o shall_v show_v you_o that_o sanctification_n be_v a_o great_a rest_n to_o the_o soul_n or_o deliverance_n from_o corruption_n be_v a_o great_a rest_n to_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o believer_n there_o be_v much_o rest_n in_o sanctification_n second_o that_o this_o rest_n it_o be_v in_o once_o give_v strength_n to_o perform_v duty_n but_o certain_o now_o the_o law_n of_o god_n command_v duty_n but_o give_v no_o strength_n to_o perform_v they_o there_o be_v no_o strength_n enable_v we_o to_o perform_v duty_n until_o the_o spirit_n of_o jesus_n christ_n do_v come_v into_o the_o soul_n we_o may_v perform_v the_o outward_a part_n of_o they_o but_o not_o perform_v duty_n in_o such_o a_o spiritual_a manner_n that_o they_o shall_v be_v suitable_a to_o our_o heart_n so_o as_o to_o bring_v ease_n and_o quiet_a unto_o our_o soul_n and_o though_o the_o soul_n do_v seek_v to_o get_v rest_n and_o ease_v to_o itself_o yet_o it_o will_v not_o come_v that_o way_n the_o second_o burden_n of_o the_o law_n second_o the_o law_n require_v perfect_a obedience_n in_o every_o thing_n and_o denounce_v a_o curse_n against_o he_o that_o do_v not_o continue_v in_o every_o thing_n that_o be_v write_v in_o the_o law_n to_o do_v it_o now_o when_o man_n and_o woman_n be_v seek_v to_o get_v rest_n to_o their_o soul_n by_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n they_o can_v perform_v duty_n as_o they_o ought_v and_o therefore_o they_o have_v no_o rest_n but_o they_o see_v the_o law_n to_o condemn_v they_o because_o they_o do_v not_o perform_v duty_n in_o a_o perfect_a manner_n and_o yet_o they_o think_v they_o must_v go_v on_o and_o do_v as_o well_o as_o they_o can_v i_o but_o still_o conscience_n have_v matter_n to_o accuse_v they_o of_o you_o have_v not_o do_v enough_o you_o still_o come_v short_a and_o though_o you_o do_v some_o duty_n you_o neglect_v other_o duty_n so_o that_o conscience_n have_v they_o at_o advantage_n every_o day_n and_o they_o be_v continual_o under_o the_o bondage_n of_o a_o accuse_v and_o condemn_v conscience_n that_o they_o can_v have_v no_o rest_n to_o their_o soul_n they_o perform_v duty_n but_o question_n with_o themselves_o how_o can_v i_o know_v that_o the_o infinite_a holy_a god_n will_v accept_v of_o what_o i_o do_v and_o although_o they_o may_v get_v quiet_a for_o a_o little_a while_n yet_o conscience_n come_v upon_o they_o again_o and_o disquiet_v they_o and_o cast_v fear_n and_o doubt_n â—to_z their_o soul_n insomuch_o that_o many_o poor_a creature_n have_v go_v seven_o or_o perhaps_o twice_o seven_o year_n under_o trouble_n of_o conscience_n and_o never_o have_v any_o rest_n or_o peace_n and_o yet_o still_o have_v go_v on_o make_v conscience_n of_o their_o way_n but_o withal_o full_a of_o fear_n and_o doubt_n lest_o all_o shall_v not_o be_v well_o with_o they_o at_o last_o the_o three_o burden_n of_o the_o law_n and_o beside_o while_o the_o soul_n go_v on_o to_o seek_v quiet_a and_o rest_n by_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n there_o be_v a_o unsuitableness_n between_o the_o duty_n that_o be_v perform_v and_o the_o heart_n of_o such_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n so_o that_o the_o very_a work_n that_o they_o do_v and_o duty_n they_o perform_v be_v grievous_a and_o tedious_a unto_o they_o ay_o but_o now_o say_v christ_n o_o come_v to_o i_o such_o as_o these_o be_v be_v there_o any_o of_o you_o that_o have_v have_v your_o conscience_n trouble_v and_o have_v desire_v o_o that_o there_o may_v be_v peace_n between_o god_n and_o my_o soul_n that_o i_o may_v have_v assurance_n of_o god_n love_n what_o course_n have_v you_o take_v to_o get_v it_o have_v you_o not_o seek_v to_o bring_v it_o about_o by_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n and_o have_v think_v to_o get_v rest_n and_o peace_n to_o your_o soul_n that_o way_n indeed_o it_o be_v better_a to_o go_v on_o that_o way_n than_o in_o the_o way_n of_o sin_n but_o to_o think_v to_o have_v rest_n and_o peace_n that_o way_n have_v a_o great_a deal_n more_o evil_a in_o it_o than_o you_o be_v aware_a of_o if_o man_n shall_v think_v to_o quiet_v themselves_o that_o way_n and_o thereby_o put_v off_o the_o righteousness_n that_o come_v by_o faith_n they_o may_v come_v to_o be_v harden_v before_o they_o be_v aware_a but_o be_v there_o any_o of_o you_o that_o be_v seek_v rest_n and_o peace_n unto_o your_o soul_n in_o such_o a_o way_n by_o the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o law_n say_v christ_n know_v that_o this_o be_v not_o the_o way_n for_o you_o to_o have_v rest_n to_o your_o soul_n it_o be_v true_a you_o must_v abstain_v from_o sin_n and_o perform_v duty_n o_o but_o if_o you_o will_v have_v rest_n to_o your_o soul_n you_o must_v come_v when_o god_n acquaint_v the_o soul_n with_o the_o mystery_n of_o the_o gospel_n in_o this_o thing_n than_o rest_n come_v on_o in_o a_o sweet_a and_o gracious_a manner_n it_o be_v true_a it_o be_v the_o hard_a thing_n in_o the_o world_n for_o to_o close_v with_o christ_n and_o to_o get_v true_a ease_n and_o rest_n to_o the_o soul_n it_o be_v hard_o in_o itself_o till_o god_n make_v know_v the_o mystery_n of_o faith_n to_o the_o soul_n but_o when_o that_o be_v do_v than_o the_o soul_n find_v abundance_n of_o ease_n and_o rest_n and_o that_o in_o a_o little_a while_n as_o it_o be_v with_o a_o man_n that_o think_v by_o main_a strength_n to_o do_v some_o work_n that_o indeed_o can_v only_o be_v do_v by_o skill_n and_o art_n he_o may_v be_v toil_a labour_a and_o tire_v himself_o but_o yet_o can_v do_v it_o whereas_o another_o man_n that_o understand_v the_o mystery_n of_o it_o he_o come_v in_o and_o in_o a_o little_a time_n by_o his_o skill_n and_o art_n can_v do_v that_o with_o ease_n that_o the_o other_o man_n be_v toil_a and_o labour_v about_o a_o long_a while_n and_o yet_o can_v not_o do_v it_o as_o you_o know_v in_o all_o trade_n that_o have_v a_o mystery_n in_o they_o you_o that_o be_v navigator_n that_o understand_v the_o mystery_n of_o that_o art_n if_o any_o unskilful_a man_n shall_v come_v and_o think_v to_o do_v some_o of_o your_o work_n by_o his_o main_a strength_n he_o may_v labour_v and_o toil_n even_o his_o heart_n out_o and_o not_o do_v that_o work_n that_o you_o can_v do_v easy_o in_o a_o little_a time_n so_o many_o poor_a soul_n be_v labour_v and_o toil_a that_o these_o trouble_a soul_n of_o they_o may_v be_v but_o quiet_a they_o be_v labour_v and_o they_o will_v perform_v duty_n and_o fast_o and_o pray_v so_o many_o time_n in_o a_o day_n and_o so_o go_v on_o in_o a_o tiresome_a way_n whereas_o after_o the_o
soul_n come_v to_o be_v acquaint_v with_o the_o mystery_n of_o the_o gospel_n that_o it_o hear_v the_o voice_n behind_o he_o as_o it_o be_v say_v come_v to_o i_o and_o the_o soul_n be_v enable_v to_o answer_v to_o the_o call_v and_o to_o come_v to_o christ_n it_o do_v now_o perform_v duty_n as_o much_o as_o it_o do_v before_o and_o make_v conscience_n of_o they_o as_o much_o as_o it_o do_v before_o but_o now_o they_o come_v to_o do_v they_o in_o another_o manner_n than_o they_o do_v before_o and_o they_o come_v to_o be_v easy_a to_o they_o over_o that_o they_o be_v before_o and_o they_o come_v to_o have_v rest_n to_o their_o soul_n notwithstanding_o their_o imperfection_n in_o duty_n when_o you_o go_v to_o prayer_n indeed_o sometime_o when_o your_o heart_n be_v much_o enlarge_v in_o prayer_n and_o your_o thought_n be_v take_v up_o whole_o with_o the_o duty_n that_o you_o be_v perform_v than_o you_o think_v you_o have_v some_o comfort_n but_o when_o you_o have_v any_o wander_a thought_n and_o distraction_n in_o prayer_n than_o you_o rise_v up_o with_o a_o mighty_a trouble_a spirit_n and_o can_v have_v no_o rest_n all_o the_o day_n long_o now_o when_o you_o come_v to_o be_v of_o the_o evil_a of_o sin_n than_o it_o be_v quicken_v enliven_v and_o work_v you_o that_o labour_n and_o be_v heavy_a lade_v you_o that_o feel_v the_o weight_n of_o sin_n upon_o your_o soul_n and_o know_v not_o what_o in_o the_o world_n to_o do_v come_v you_o to_o i_o say_v christ_n and_o i_o will_v give_v you_o rest_v the_o burden_n of_o corruption_n three_o you_o that_o labour_v under_o the_o power_n of_o any_o corruption_n not_o only_o under_o the_o gild_n of_o your_o sin_n but_o under_o the_o power_n of_o corruption_n that_o feel_v your_o sin_n strong_a in_o you_o and_o you_o will_v fain_o get_v the_o mastery_n of_o they_o you_o that_o carry_v about_o with_o you_o such_o a_o weight_n as_o make_v you_o to_o cry_v out_o with_o st._n paul_n oh_o wretched_a man_n or_o woman_n that_o i_o be_o who_o shall_v deliver_v i_o from_o this_o body_n of_o death_n you_o that_o will_v fain_o overcome_v those_o strong_a corruption_n that_o be_v in_o you_o and_o it_o be_v the_o great_a burden_n of_o your_o soul_n that_o you_o can_v overcome_v they_o come_v to_o i_o say_v christ_n and_o i_o will_v give_v you_o rest_n from_o they_o also_o first_o you_o that_o labour_n under_o the_o burden_n of_o duty_n and_o find_v they_o toilsome_a second_o you_o that_o labour_n under_o the_o guilt_n of_o sin_n and_o find_v your_o soul_n perplex_v by_o it_o three_o you_o that_o labour_v under_o the_o power_n of_o any_o corruption_n and_o can_v overcome_v it_o come_v to_o i_o and_o i_o will_v give_v you_o rest_v and_o then_o the_o burden_n of_o affliction_n four_o you_o that_o labour_v under_o any_o outward_a trouble_n or_o affliction_n in_o this_o world_n all_o you_o that_o be_v in_o any_o sad_a condition_n that_o have_v any_o burden_n upon_o you_o outward_o if_o you_o come_v to_o christ_n he_o will_v ease_v you_o of_o they_o though_o perhaps_o he_o will_v not_o take_v they_o from_o you_o though_o you_o may_v be_v under_o the_o affliction_n as_o before_o yet_o you_o shall_v have_v rest_n and_o ease_v in_o they_o have_v you_o any_o burden_n of_o poverty_n have_v you_o any_o burden_n in_o your_o child_n have_v you_o any_o burden_n in_o your_o yoke_n fellow_n or_o burden_n by_o reason_n of_o weakness_n in_o body_n if_o you_o will_v have_v rest_n you_o must_v go_v for_o it_o to_o chirst_n many_o when_o they_o be_v under_o any_o outward_a affliction_n they_o go_v no_o further_o than_o the_o creature_n for_o rest_n oh_o if_o i_o have_v but_o good_a friend_n i_o shall_v be_v happy_a or_o if_o i_o have_v but_o a_o estate_n i_o shall_v be_v well_o but_o if_o thy_o poverty_n do_v work_v upon_o thy_o heart_n kind_o it_o will_v drive_v thou_o to_o chest_n and_o make_v thou_o to_o say_v true_a i_o be_o poor_a in_o this_o world_n but_o there_o be_v enough_o in_o christ_n to_o make_v i_o rich_a there_o be_v mercy_n enough_o in_o christ_n to_o make_v my_o life_n comfortable_a to_o make_v i_o who_o be_o for_o the_o present_a in_o a_o miserable_a condition_n happy_a for_o ever_o those_o that_o be_v poor_a outward_o they_o shall_v go_v to_o christ_n if_o their_o poverty_n do_v drive_v they_o to_o christ_n it_o be_v a_o good_a sign_n that_o the_o lord_n show_v how_o christ_n call_v those_o that_o be_v under_o these_o to_o himself_o will_v take_v up_o much_o time_n therefore_o i_o will_v pitch_v upon_o the_o second_o at_o present_a and_o handle_v that_o more_o thorough_o and_o that_o be_v the_o labour_n under_o the_o burden_n of_o the_o guilt_n of_o sin_n you_o that_o labour_n under_o the_o burden_n of_o the_o gild_n of_o sin_n come_v to_o i_o who_o come_v to_o see_v the_o great_a bondage_n that_o you_o be_v in_o under_o the_o law_n and_o feel_v the_o great_a burden_n that_o be_v upon_o you_o in_o seek_v after_o justification_n by_o the_o law_n and_o have_v do_v so_o for_o a_o long_a time_n say_v christ_n know_v that_o you_o have_v be_v deceive_v in_o look_v after_o your_o justification_n on_o that_o way_n you_o have_v labour_v and_o toil_v in_o vain_a for_o it_o will_v not_o be_v get_v that_o way_n come_v to_o i_o and_o you_o shall_v have_v such_o rest_n to_o your_o soul_n as_o you_o never_o yet_o have_v feel_v nor_o never_o to_o a_o burden_n will_v appear_v by_o that_o expression_n which_o you_o have_v in_o rom._n 6.14_o for_o sin_n shall_v not_o have_v dominion_n over_o you_o for_o you_o be_v not_o under_o the_o law_n but_o under_o grace_n he_o speak_v to_o those_o that_o be_v deliver_v and_o faith_n they_o be_v not_o now_o under_o the_o law_n there_o be_v a_o time_n indeed_o that_o they_o be_v under_o the_o law_n and_o ease_v to_o we_o from_o the_o law_n now_o except_o we_o understand_v the_o yoke_n and_o burden_n of_o the_o law_n we_o can_v understand_v the_o worth_n of_o christ_n in_o come_v to_o give_v we_o commandment_n of_o god_n to_o be_v grievous_a and_o so_o to_o murmur_v and_o repine_v against_o god_n as_o many_o do_v that_o be_v in_o trouble_n of_o conscience_n they_o go_v on_o in_o duty_n but_o conscience_n of_o and_o so_o grow_v to_o be_v loose_a and_o profane_a or_o otherwise_o if_o conscience_n pursue_v they_o more_o and_o more_o they_o grow_v to_o despair_v and_o sometime_o upon_o their_o sick_a bed_n and_o death_n bed_n come_v into_o a_o rave_a and_o rage_a distemper_n as_o by_o experience_n we_o find_v that_o many_o after_o they_o have_v be_v a_o long_a time_n under_o a_o trouble_a conscience_n and_o go_v on_o in_o a_o legal_a way_n they_o have_v grow_v very_o profane_a there_o be_v a_o time_n that_o they_o dare_v not_o neglect_v duty_n in_o their_o family_n and_o closet_n but_o they_o come_v afterward_o to_o think_v that_o this_o be_v but_o legal_a and_o now_o they_o cast_v they_o off_o and_o give_v themselves_o to_o looseness_n and_o then_o they_o have_v nothing_o to_o plead_v for_o themselves_o but_o this_o that_o they_o be_v under_o legal_a performance_n and_o they_o leave_v they_o off_o and_o thus_o they_o go_v this_o way_n to_o rest_n but_o oh_o woeful_a this_o be_v to_o go_v to_o the_o devil_n for_o rest_n if_o you_o have_v come_v to_o christ_n you_o may_v have_v have_v rest_n but_o these_o give_v up_o their_o soul_n to_o the_o devil_n rest_v and_o grow_v to_o looseness_n and_o be_v notorious_o scandalous_a in_o in_o their_o life_n i_o suppose_v if_o you_o will_v observe_v it_o you_o need_v not_o go_v far_o to_o find_v example_n in_o this_o kind_n but_o other_o that_o can_v get_v the_o mastery_n of_o their_o conscience_n they_o grow_v to_o despair_v when_o they_o come_v upon_o their_o sick_a bed_n their_o heart_n be_v overwhelm_v with_o despair_n and_o so_o they_o die_v now_o oh_o what_o pity_v it_o be_v to_o loose_v such_o soul_n as_o have_v go_v thus_o far_o in_o the_o way_n of_o religion_n as_o thus_o first_o they_o do_v the_o same_o thing_n that_o god_n people_n do_v for_o the_o outward_a act_n they_o do_v the_o same_o thing_n the_o saint_n do_v second_o they_o be_v very_o conscientious_a of_o what_o they_o do_v make_v conscience_n of_o their_o very_a thought_n and_o of_o their_o secret_a way_n nay_o three_o they_o know_v they_o have_v to_o do_v with_o god_n in_o every_o thing_n they_o have_v their_o heart_n so_o wrought_v upon_o that_o they_o set_v themselves_o in_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n always_o nay_o four_o they_o have_v the_o fear_n of_o god_n the_o fear_n of_o eternity_n upon_o their_o heart_n continual_o and_o yet_o perish_v at_o last_o and_o all_o for_o the_o want_n of_o knowledge_n of_o the_o gospel_n it_o be_v true_a these_o man_n say_v right_a that_o if_o their_o be_v any_o such_o who_o do_v put_v they_o upon_o duty_n and_o not_o open_a to_o they_o the_o rest_n that_o be_v in_o the_o gospel_n and_o in_o christ_n if_o they_o do_v so_o they_o be_v right_o blame_v for_o put_v man_n upon_o duty_n god_n forbid_v that_o any_o that_o take_v upon_o they_o to_o preach_v the_o mind_n of_o god_n unto_o people_n shall_v rest_v here_o in_o mere_o put_v of_o man_n upon_o upon_o the_o way_n of_o god_n whereas_o when_o the_o heart_n be_v sanctify_v and_o carry_v on_o by_o a_o divine_a principle_n such_o a_o one_o make_v the_o way_n of_o god_n beautiful_a and_o lovely_a to_o those_o that_o they_o converse_v withal_o but_o they_o that_o perform_v duty_n mere_o in_o a_o legal_a way_n they_o go_v on_o so_o pensive_o sad_o and_o dull_o that_o there_o be_v no_o beauty_n at_o all_o in_o their_o conversation_n and_o they_o make_v other_o afraid_a of_o those_o way_n that_o be_v so_o tedious_a and_o irksome_a to_o they_o the_o five_o misery_n five_o there_o be_v this_o evil_n in_o the_o burden_n of_o legal_a performance_n that_o those_o that_o perform_v duty_n mere_o in_o a_o legal_a manner_n they_o do_v not_o keep_v any_o proportion_n in_o the_o way_n of_o god_n

contradiction_n in_o this_o for_o if_o this_o be_v true_a how_o can_v the_o other_o be_v true_a but_o these_o thing_n that_o seem_v contradictory_n they_o be_v very_o agreeable_a one_o with_o another_o if_o you_o will_v seem_v to_o give_v judgement_n upon_o what_o we_o apprehend_v we_o shall_v make_v the_o scripture_n to_o contradict_v itself_o but_o now_o those_o that_o be_v verse_v in_o scripture_n and_o understand_v the_o mind_n of_o god_n in_o the_o scripture_n can_v tell_v how_o to_o join_v these_o together_o though_o other_o think_v they_o contradict_v one_o another_o as_o that_o world_n to_o come_v off_o from_o it_o and_o it_o be_v that_o make_v the_o work_n of_o faith_n the_o most_o difficult_a thing_n in_o the_o world_n because_o it_o carry_v the_o soul_n out_o of_o itself_o from_o its_o own_o bottom_n from_o its_o own_o principle_n and_o the_o mistake_n of_o this_o thing_n be_v that_o that_o be_v the_o undo_n of_o thousand_o of_o those_o that_o live_v under_o the_o sound_n of_o the_o gospel_n that_o when_o they_o have_v somewhat_o reform_v their_o life_n and_o think_v they_o be_v able_a to_o do_v thus_o and_o thus_o yet_o here_o they_o rest_n and_o go_v not_o out_o of_o themselves_o to_o look_v for_o rest_n out_o of_o themselves_o and_o do_v not_o come_v to_o christ_n quest_n you_o will_v say_v what_o not_o rest_n upon_o what_o we_o do_v and_o be_v enable_v to_o do_v upon_o god_n grace_n faith_n itself_o be_v a_o rest_v upon_o christ_n ans_fw-fr no_o but_o this_o you_o must_v observe_v in_o your_o come_n you_o must_v not_o rest_v upon_o your_o come_n but_o upon_o christ_n that_o you_o come_v unto_o for_o their_o may_v be_v a_o deceit_n in_o that_o too_o there_o be_v some_o that_o rest_n upon_o work_n of_o humiliation_n mourn_v for_o sin_n reform_v their_o life_n and_o they_o think_v that_o be_v their_o rest_n and_o peace_n other_o go_v further_o and_o think_v they_o must_v believe_v in_o christ_n but_o they_o will_v rest_v upon_o their_o believe_a so_o they_o rest_v upon_o their_o come_n and_o not_o upon_o the_o object_n that_o they_o come_v unto_o but_o we_o must_v be_v take_v off_o from_o rest_v upon_o our_o come_n upon_o our_o very_a believe_a and_o christ_n must_v be_v all_o in_o all_o to_o have_v true_a rest_n in_o therefore_o faith_n be_v a_o supernatural_a grace_n because_o by_o that_o we_o be_v take_v off_o from_o what_o we_o be_v in_o ourselves_o and_o carry_v on_o to_o somewhat_o else_o 6._o upon_o this_o follow_v likewise_o that_o faith_n be_v a_o humble_v grace_n it_o be_v that_o that_o must_v needs_o humble_a the_o soul_n where_o it_o be_v for_o indeed_o it_o be_v the_o great_a self_n denial_n in_o the_o world_n for_o a_o creature_n to_o come_v to_o be_v willing_a to_o rely_v upon_o free_a grace_n for_o the_o soul_n to_o be_v so_o empty_v of_o itself_o as_o to_o acknowledge_v there_o be_v no_o worthiness_n no_o good_a at_o all_o in_o itself_o and_o yet_o it_o be_v content_a to_o live_v eternal_o upon_o mere_a alm_n and_o to_o give_v god_n the_o glory_n of_o al._n be_v there_o any_o thing_n more_o hard_a to_o any_o of_o you_o then_o to_o live_v to_o be_v beggar_n all_o your_o day_n to_o be_v behold_v to_o other_o so_o as_o to_o live_v upon_o mere_a alm_n and_o nothing_o else_o all_o the_o day_n of_o your_o life_n now_o for_o the_o creature_n to_o be_v so_o empty_v of_o itself_o the_o heart_n and_o indeed_o this_o be_v the_o very_a ground_n why_o the_o lord_n do_v so_o humble_a the_o spirit_n of_o man_n and_o woman_n when_o he_o bring_v they_o to_o christ_n because_o that_o the_o lord_n know_v that_o the_o very_a act_n the_o come_n to_o christ_n be_v a_o act_n of_o the_o great_a self_n denial_n in_o the_o world_n because_o the_o heart_n must_v be_v empty_v of_o itself_o in_o that_o that_o be_v so_o much_o against_o the_o pride_n of_o man_n heart_n to_o live_v eternal_o upon_o mere_a free_a grace_n and_o nothing_o else_o for_o there_o be_v nothing_o that_o man_n do_v more_o desire_n then_o to_o have_v somewhat_o some_o stock_n of_o himself_o to_o live_v upon_o and_o indeed_o herein_o man_n come_v to_o be_v more_o humble_a than_o adam_n in_o innocency_n can_v be_v for_o adam_n have_v a_o stock_n to_o live_v upon_o in_o his_o own_o hand_n to_o live_v upon_o in_o himself_o not_o but_o god_n be_v the_o principle_n of_o it_o but_o then_o god_n give_v it_o he_o to_o live_v upon_o the_o stock_n of_o grace_n he_o have_v in_o his_o own_o hand_n but_o now_o in_o the_o second_o adam_n the_o way_n of_o god_n towards_o we_o be_v otherwise_o the_o second_o adam_n keep_v the_o stock_n of_o life_n and_o grace_n upon_o which_o our_o soul_n must_v live_v eternal_o in_o his_o own_o hand_n i_o say_v they_o be_v in_o christ_n hand_n not_o in_o ourselves_o and_o therefore_o our_o life_n be_v a_o better_a and_o safe_a life_n then_o that_o be_v and_o thereby_o we_o can_v fall_v from_o god_n because_o we_o live_v by_o the_o principle_n of_o life_n that_o be_v in_o he_o it_o be_v a_o great_a mystery_n and_o almost_o impossible_a to_o unfold_v only_o some_o glimmer_n we_o have_v in_o the_o word_n that_o this_o be_v so_o 7._o if_o there_o be_v nothing_o require_v but_o to_o come_v than_o another_o consequence_n will_v follow_v from_o hence_o and_o that_o be_v this_o hence_o then_o believer_n that_o come_v to_o christ_n may_v learn_v this_o lesson_n to_o be_v willing_a to_o do_v and_o to_o suffer_v very_o much_o for_o christ_n after_o they_o come_v because_o there_o be_v nothing_o require_v of_o they_o to_o the_o pardon_n of_o their_o sin_n but_o only_o to_o come_v i_o strengthen_v the_o inference_n thus_o if_o god_n have_v say_v thus_o indeed_o i_o have_v send_v a_o mediator_n to_o pacify_v my_o wrath_n and_o to_o pardon_v your_o sin_n and_o before_o you_o come_v to_o rest_n i_o require_v that_o you_o shall_v suffer_v so_o many_o hundred_o year_n of_o torment_n in_o fire_n and_o that_o shall_v be_v a_o preparation_n to_o come_v and_o then_o after_o you_o have_v suffer_v so_o much_o than_o you_o shall_v come_v and_o have_v rest_n suppose_v this_o have_v be_v the_o condition_n of_o the_o covenant_n now_o have_v it_o be_v so_o we_o have_v all_o have_v cause_n to_o have_v fall_v upon_o our_o face_n and_o have_v blessed_v his_o great_a name_n that_o we_o can_v have_v peace_n on_o any_o term_n and_o we_o shall_v have_v be_v not_o only_o willing_a to_o accept_v of_o these_o term_n but_o to_o magnify_v god_n grace_n that_o we_o can_v be_v thus_o save_v at_o last_o but_o the_o lord_n have_v not_o require_v that_o first_o we_o shall_v suffer_v such_o and_o such_o hard_a thing_n and_o then_o come_v to_o christ_n but_o he_o call_v upon_o we_o first_o to_o come_v and_o require_v nothing_o before_o and_o therefore_o before_o we_o be_v able_a to_o do_v the_o lord_n any_o service_n the_o lord_n will_v first_o accept_v of_o we_o and_o pardon_v we_o and_o heal_v we_o and_o interest_n we_o in_o himself_o and_o be_v our_o god_n and_o take_v we_o to_o be_v his_o child_n and_o make_v we_o heir_n of_o heaven_n and_o eternal_a life_n &_o this_o at_o first_o before_o we_o shall_v ever_o be_v able_a to_o do_v he_o any_o service_n what_o a_o infinite_a grace_n of_o god_n be_v this_o how_o be_v he_o beforehand_o with_o we_o for_o he_o call_v to_o the_o great_a sinner_n that_o know_v what_o his_o sin_n be_v and_o be_v lade_v say_v god_n they_o no_o more_o as_o when_o you_o cast_v a_o thing_n out_o of_o your_o ship_n into_o the_o bottom_n of_o the_o sea_n you_o never_o look_v for_o it_o again_o so_o it_o be_v with_o god_n all_o your_o sin_n shall_v be_v cast_v into_o the_o bottom_n of_o the_o sea_n and_o shall_v be_v so_o far_o from_o you_o as_o the_o gild_n of_o they_o shall_v never_o come_v more_o to_o you_o when_o once_o you_o be_v come_v to_o christ_n ix_o nine_o there_o be_v not_o only_a deliverance_n from_o guiltiness_n our_o justification_n be_v not_o only_o privative_a but_o it_o be_v a_o clothing_n of_o the_o soul_n of_o judgement_n may_v be_v terrible_a the_o lord_n have_v a_o particular_a day_n of_o judgement_n for_o every_o soul_n in_o which_o god_n do_v cast_v every_o man_n one_o way_n or_o other_o but_o then_o there_o shall_v be_v a_o great_a day_n of_o judgement_n wherein_o all_o the_o world_n shall_v solemn_o be_v judge_v now_o then_o lie_v all_o these_o together_o christ_n undertake_v christ_n satisfy_v the_o justice_n of_o his_o father_n christ_n satisfy_v the_o wrath_n of_o his_o father_n christ_n be_v a_o advocate_n at_o the_o right_a hand_n of_o his_o father_n christ_n sprinkle_v thy_o bless_v god_n and_o even_o say_v with_o the_o psalmist_n in_o psalm_n 116._o and_o now_o my_o soul_n return_v unto_o thy_o rest_n the_o word_n be_v in_o the_o original_n rest_v and_o now_o my_o soul_n return_v unto_o thy_o rest_n oh_o here_o be_v rest_n ten_o several_a rest_n for_o a_o lade_v soul_n that_o be_v under_o the_o guilt_n of_o sin_n do_v not_o think_v it_o much_o that_o we_o that_o be_v and_o the_o right_a understanding_n of_o this_o will_v help_v we_o exceed_v much_o in_o the_o understanding_n of_o many_o truth_n in_o religion_n wherefore_o first_o i_o shall_v show_v you_o how_o far_o christ_n have_v not_o deliver_v we_o from_o the_o law_n that_o be_v where_o it_o be_v where_o it_o be_v
shall_v say_v then_o what_o need_v we_o regard_v what_o we_o do_v if_o any_o shall_v say_v so_o we_o need_v go_v no_o further_o with_o this_o man_n but_o say_v unto_o he_o thou_o have_v no_o part_n way_n of_o salvation_n but_o mere_o through_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n and_o they_o will_v certain_o miscarry_v by_o what_o you_o have_v hear_v you_o see_v that_o the_o way_n of_o salvation_n be_v a_o high_a thing_n than_o nature_n the_o four_o lesson_n four_o we_o may_v learn_v from_o hence_o that_o if_o christ_n have_v give_v rest_n to_o believer_n by_o deliver_v they_o from_o the_o rigour_n and_o severity_n of_o the_o law_n that_o now_o they_o be_v not_o to_o be_v cast_v by_o it_o for_o their_o everlasting_a estate_n than_o they_o need_v to_o be_v so_o much_o the_o more_o faithful_a with_o god_n to_o do_v what_o possible_o they_o can_v to_o serve_v the_o lord_n in_o a_o evangelical_a way_n thou_o be_v in_o such_o a_o condition_n that_o thou_o be_v under_o such_o a_o law_n as_o if_o thou_o do_v fail_v in_o any_o one_o point_n thou_o be_v cast_v for_o ever_o but_o now_o thou_o be_v under_o such_o a_o law_n as_o god_n accept_v of_o thou_o in_o christ_n have_v thou_o not_o need_n be_v more_o faithful_a and_o industrious_a in_o thy_o endeavour_n in_o that_o thou_o have_v receive_v so_o much_o mercy_n to_o be_v under_o such_o a_o covenant_n the_o truth_n be_v the_o other_o may_v discourage_v thou_o to_o think_v that_o let_v i_o do_v what_o i_o can_v my_o soul_n be_v cast_v for_o my_o everlasting_a estate_n but_o now_o if_o thou_o be_v bring_v under_o the_o covenant_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o the_o lord_n christ_n have_v make_v thou_o to_o know_v that_o thy_o rest_n be_v in_o he_o how_o careful_a shall_v thou_o be_v to_o walk_v with_o he_o in_o all_o well_o please_v to_o give_v up_o the_o strength_n of_o thy_o soul_n to_o walk_v in_o his_o way_n i_o will_v appeal_v to_o thou_o suppose_v thou_o be_v in_o the_o condition_n again_o that_o the_o lord_n look_v upon_o thou_o with_o a_o strict_a eye_n and_o require_v such_o absolute_a obedience_n that_o if_o thou_o fail_v in_o any_o thing_n nothing_o that_o ever_o before_o thou_o do_v shall_v now_o faith_n that_o deliver_v we_o from_o the_o law_n of_o all_o grace_n that_o must_v be_v evangelical_a our_o mourning_n for_o sin_n be_v to_o be_v look_v upon_o as_o evangelical_a and_o yet_o some_o believer_n look_v upon_o their_o mourning_n for_o sin_n as_o legal_a they_o think_v god_n will_v not_o accept_v of_o their_o mourning_n why_o because_o they_o can_v mourn_v as_o much_o as_o they_o will_v that_o be_v true_a if_o thou_o be_v under_o the_o law_n than_o no_o mourning_n at_o all_o will_v be_v accept_v as_o under_o the_o law_n but_o now_o thou_o must_v look_v upon_o it_o as_o evangelical_a and_o thy_o obedience_n as_o evangelical_a it_o be_v a_o ill_a thing_n that_o believer_n look_v upon_o their_o mourning_n for_o sin_n and_o obedience_n and_o the_o like_a as_o under_o the_o law_n and_o not_o as_o evangelical_a this_o be_v a_o great_a hindrance_n to_o they_o but_o now_o much_o more_o be_v it_o to_o

be_v not_o so_o terrible_a as_o the_o threat_n of_o the_o law_n now_o if_o god_n have_v give_v thou_o such_o a_o grace_n into_o thy_o heart_n as_o thou_o by_o that_o come_v to_o know_v a_o way_n to_o deliver_v thou_o from_o the_o terror_n of_o the_o threaten_n of_o the_o law_n and_o to_o give_v rest_n unto_o thy_o soul_n from_o that_o than_o thou_o need_v not_o be_v afraid_a of_o all_o terror_n thy_o faith_n when_o thou_o hear_v the_o terror_n of_o wicked_a man_n to_o deliver_v thy_o soul_n from_o they_o let_v there_o be_v never_o so_o much_o rumour_n in_o the_o world_n yet_o thou_o may_v with_o all_o thy_o might_n to_o deliver_v thy_o brother_n from_o burden_n trouble_n any_o thing_n that_o may_v grieve_v thy_o brother_n oh_o what_o a_o unworthy_a thing_n be_v it_o that_o a_o regard_n of_o legal_a performance_n that_o you_o know_v i_o open_v at_o large_a the_o great_a burden_n that_o there_o be_v in_o the_o spirit_n of_o many_o people_n who_o have_v convince_v conscience_n and_o there_o conscience_n pull_v and_o hale_v they_o to_o duty_n and_o they_o dare_v not_o but_o perform_v duty_n but_o when_o they_o do_v their_o duty_n their_o very_a duty_n be_v a_o burden_n to_o they_o for_o they_o do_v they_o in_o a_o legal_a way_n there_o be_v many_o i_o know_v that_o be_v acquaint_v with_o this_o it_o be_v impossible_a to_o speak_v of_o such_o a_o subject_n but_o that_o there_o be_v divers_a that_o know_v what_o i_o mean_v though_o other_o know_v not_o to_o be_v under_o so_o much_o power_n of_o conscience_n as_o not_o to_o dare_v to_o omit_v a_o duty_n though_o the_o duty_n be_v burdensome_a to_o they_o there_o be_v many_o that_o be_v not_o under_o so_o much_o command_v of_o conscience_n but_o though_o conscience_n require_v they_o to_o do_v such_o a_o duty_n they_o dare_v omit_v the_o duty_n and_o they_o be_v not_o trouble_v at_o it_o but_o but_o there_o be_v other_o who_o have_v not_o feel_v the_o grace_n of_o the_o gospel_n to_o set_v their_o soul_n at_o liberty_n they_o be_v under_o so_o much_o command_v of_o conscience_n that_o they_o dare_v not_o but_o do_v what_o conscience_n require_v and_o yet_o the_o lord_n know_v the_o duty_n that_o the_o pox_n if_o he_o shall_v at_o last_o look_v upon_o his_o visage_n and_o judge_v of_o the_o constitution_n of_o his_o body_n according_a to_o his_o countenance_n this_o will_v discourage_v he_o thy_o grace_n work_v downward_o in_o way_n of_o humiliation_n observe_v a_o proportion_n between_o thy_o joy_n and_o humiliation_n many_o people_n be_v enlarge_v upon_o the_o joy_n they_o have_v in_o man_n shall_v be_v never_o so_o angry_a and_o offend_v he_o that_o have_v offend_v he_o may_v make_v amends_o again_o a_o servant_n think_v though_o i_o have_v offend_v my_o master_n and_o do_v so_o many_o fault_n yet_o i_o will_v make_v amends_o for_o al._n so_o many_o people_n think_v though_o we_o have_v break_v the_o law_n of_o god_n and_o live_v a_o great_a while_n in_o sin_n and_o do_v that_o which_o be_v evil_a yet_o we_o will_v make_v amends_o again_o and_o we_o will_v give_v alm_n and_o come_v to_o church_n and_o the_o like_a these_o be_v the_o reason_n of_o many_o poor_a ignorant_a heart_n that_o do_v not_o understand_v upon_o what_o term_n they_o stand_v with_o god_n all_o the_o child_n of_o man_n stand_v before_o god_n either_o under_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n or_o under_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n one_o of_o the_o two_o now_o those_o kind_n of_o man_n that_o reason_n after_o this_o manner_n sure_o they_o be_v not_o acquaint_v with_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n they_o be_v under_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n and_o now_o let_v they_o know_v that_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n admit_v of_o no_o such_o amends_o as_o they_o speak_v of_o but_o when_o once_o you_o have_v break_v the_o law_n all_o that_o ever_o you_o can_v do_v if_o you_o can_v live_v a_o thousand_o year_n never_o so_o strict_o or_o be_v willing_a to_o suffer_v never_o so_o much_o for_o god_n
