the_o reason_n and_o a_o second_o branch_n of_o that_o law_n which_o appoint_v the_o proportion_n of_o the_o time_n of_o that_o rest_n that_o it_o shall_v be_v one_o day_n in_o the_o week_n but_o concern_v the_o three_o branch_n without_z which_o the_o law_n itself_o be_v not_o perfect_a that_o be_v which_o day_n of_o the_o week_n shall_v be_v the_o day_n of_o that_o rest_n be_v not_o express_v as_o we_o have_v partly_o already_o show_v in_o open_v the_o explication_n of_o this_o commandment_n but_o only_o in_o the_o reason_n annex_v unto_o this_o law_n unless_o therefore_o it_o can_v be_v prove_v that_o the_o term_n seven_o mention_v in_o the_o explication_n of_o this_o commandment_n signify_v the_o last_o day_n of_o seven_o we_o have_v no_o law_n precedent_n to_o god_n example_n here_o mention_v that_o command_v the_o observation_n of_o the_o last_o day_n of_o the_o week_n for_o the_o day_n of_o rest_n day_n as_o have_v be_v show_v already_o that_o seven_o in_o the_o explication_n of_o the_o commandment_n note_v not_o the_o particular_a day_n now_o the_o weakness_n of_o the_o reason_n allege_v to_o prove_v that_o this_o term_n seven_o use_v in_o the_o explication_n of_o this_o law_n signify_v the_o last_o day_n of_o the_o week_n we_o have_v show_v already_o and_o by_o one_o reason_n have_v make_v it_o more_o than_o probable_a that_o this_o term_n seven_o in_o that_o place_n signify_v only_o indefinite_o one_o of_o seven_o and_o not_o particular_o such_o a_o certain_a day_n of_o the_o seven_o the_o second_o reason_n which_o far_a manifest_v that_o truth_n and_o make_v it_o evident_a commandment_n and_o be_v further_o prove_v because_o god_n mention_n it_o not_o at_o all_o in_o the_o conclusion_n of_o the_o commandment_n we_o have_v defer_v until_o now_o and_o it_o be_v this_o if_o god_n have_v intend_v to_o command_v that_o the_o last_o day_n of_o the_o week_n shall_v be_v observe_v for_o the_o sabbath_n he_o must_v and_o will_v have_v mention_v it_o in_o the_o conclusion_n of_o that_o reason_n by_o which_o he_o show_v we_o the_o equity_n of_o the_o observation_n of_o that_o day_n rather_o than_o any_o other_o now_o he_o be_v so_o far_o from_o do_v that_o that_o he_o forbear_v the_o mention_v of_o that_o name_n of_o seven_o in_o the_o conclusion_n at_o all_o that_o this_o which_o we_o allege_v may_v have_v the_o great_a if_o man_n have_v not_o fall_v but_o now_o when_o man_n be_v fall_v week_n but_o man_n redemption_n by_o christ_n be_v a_o great_a work_n require_v the_o alter_n of_o the_o sabbath_n to_o the_o first_o day_n of_o the_o week_n and_o therefore_o to_o be_v redeem_v and_o create_v anew_o which_o be_v a_o great_a work_n than_o his_o creation_n at_o the_o first_o so_o that_o a_o great_a work_n and_o mercy_n of_o god_n to_o man_n be_v to_o be_v remember_v there_o be_v in_o a_o sort_n a_o necessity_n of_o change_v the_o day_n of_o rest_n from_o the_o last_o to_o the_o first_o day_n of_o the_o week_n on_o which_o man_n redemption_n be_v to_o be_v perfect_v and_o consequent_o it_o be_v fit_a that_o the_o law_n give_v to_o man_n fall_v and_o to_o be_v redeem_v shall_v be_v so_o pen_v in_o general_a term_n that_o when_o this_o glorious_a work_n of_o man_n redemption_n shall_v be_v perfect_v there_o may_v be_v a_o change_n of_o the_o day_n of_o rest_n without_o any_o change_n of_o the_o law_n a_o second_o exception_n that_o we_o take_v against_o the_o draw_n of_o the_o reason_n of_o this_o four_o commandment_n law_n 1._o to_o urge_v the_o keep_n of_o the_o sabbath_n from_o the_o rest_v alike_o because_o god_n condition_n and_o we_o be_v not_o alike_o show_v no_o equity_n in_o the_o law_n at_o all_o we_o can_v make_v good_a this_o position_n it_o be_v equal_a and_o just_a that_o we_o shall_v rest_v because_o god_n rest_v there_o be_v infinite_a odds_o between_o god_n condition_n and_o we_o god_n may_v rest_v as_o long_o and_o as_o often_o as_o he_o please_v see_v he_o have_v al-sufficienty_a in_o himself_o and_o be_v not_o support_v by_o labour_n as_o man_n and_o their_o estate_n be_v who_o if_o they_o shall_v cease_v from_o their_o labour_n too_o long_o or_o too_o often_o must_v necessary_o perish_v so_o that_o by_o reason_v in_o this_o manner_n that_o we_o must_v rest_v because_o god_n rest_v too_o can_v make_v the_o equity_n of_o this_o law_n appear_v at_o all_o see_v therefore_o the_o equity_n of_o the_o law_n can_v be_v evidence_v by_o reason_v from_o god_n mere_a act_n of_o rest_v upon_o that_o day_n let_v we_o now_o try_v whether_o the_o other_o way_n of_o deduce_v the_o reason_n of_o the_o law_n from_o god_n advance_v and_o honour_v the_o seven_o day_n by_o his_o rest_v thereupon_o and_o establish_v the_o rule_n of_o our_o rest_n thereupon_o do_v not_o more_o clear_o manifest_v the_o equity_n of_o this_o law_n in_o that_o particular_a evident_a but_o draw_v the_o reason_n from_o god_n honour_v of_o that_o day_n by_o his_o rest_n the_o equity_n of_o the_o law_n be_v evident_a if_o we_o draw_v the_o reason_n of_o the_o law_n from_o the_o honour_n of_o the_o seven_o day_n by_o god_n rest_v upon_o that_o from_o all_o his_o work_n we_o may_v conceive_v that_o he_o argue_v in_o this_o or_o that_o manner_n that_o day_n which_o be_v honour_v by_o god_n above_o other_o day_n by_o his_o most_o eminent_a work_n of_o mercy_n to_o mankind_n shall_v be_v the_o day_n of_o holy_a rest_n to_o be_v consecrate_v to_o he_o for_o his_o worship_n but_o the_o day_n in_o which_o god_n end_v and_o perfect_v the_o creation_n of_o the_o world_n be_v the_o day_n honour_v and_o advance_v above_o all_o other_o day_n by_o that_o wonderful_a work_n therefore_o that_o shall_v be_v the_o day_n of_o your_o holy_a rest_n in_o this_o syllogism_n the_o minor_a or_o second_o proposition_n only_o be_v express_v in_o the_o word_n of_o the_o law_n and_o that_o too_o only_o in_o part_n for_o there_o be_v no_o more_o say_v but_o that_o god_n rest_v that_o day_n not_o that_o he_o honour_v that_o day_n by_o his_o rest_n which_o notwithstanding_o be_v necessary_o imply_v for_o he_o that_o say_v that_o christ_n rise_v the_o first_o day_n of_o the_o week_n must_v mean_v as_o much_o as_o if_o he_o have_v say_v christ_n make_v the_o first_o day_n of_o the_o week_n honourable_a &_o memorable_a by_o his_o resurrection_n on_o that_o day_n as_o for_o the_o major_a or_o first_o proposition_n in_o this_o syllogism_n it_o be_v a_o principle_n acknowledge_v by_o all_o man_n by_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n it_o be_v evident_a that_o day_n and_o time_n in_o themselves_o be_v all_o equal_a that_o which_o advance_v one_o day_n above_o another_o must_v be_v some_o memorable_a event_n that_o have_v happen_v on_o that_o day_n again_o that_o such_o memorable_a event_n ought_v to_o be_v the_o ground_n upon_o which_o such_o day_n as_o god_n have_v mark_v out_o by_o they_o church_n lay_v down_o a_o ground_n upon_o which_o god_n institute_v other_o feast_n and_o the_o church_n and_o advance_v above_o other_o day_n aught_o to_o be_v observe_v above_o other_o day_n be_v as_o clear_v and_o evident_a wherefore_o we_o see_v that_o god_n himself_o have_v take_v that_o for_o his_o ground_n of_o justify_v the_o feast_n of_o passeover_n and_o pentecost_n and_o in_o imitation_n of_o he_o the_o jew_n upon_o the_o same_o ground_n take_v upon_o they_o the_o observation_n of_o the_o feast_n of_o purim_n hest_n 9.21_o nature_n yea_o the_o very_a heathen_n lead_v thereto_o by_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n 23._o yea_o the_o very_a heathen_a themselves_o as_o day_n of_o holy_a rejoice_v in_o god_n in_o remembrance_n of_o his_o great_a and_o glorious_a work_n be_v to_o show_v a_o equity_n acknowledge_v by_o light_n of_o nature_n in_o the_o institution_n of_o the_o sabbath_n now_o whereas_o god_n both_o in_o all_o his_o way_n appear_v god_n therefore_o purpose_v to_o show_v the_o equity_n of_o this_o law_n can_v not_o but_o set_v down_o the_o reason_n so_o as_o that_o may_v best_o appear_v but_o more_o especial_o in_o his_o law_n take_v special_a care_n to_o make_v it_o appear_v unto_o man_n that_o they_o be_v all_o equal_a and_o just_a in_o all_o thing_n as_o the_o prophet_n david_n acknowledge_v psal_n 119.128_o both_o for_o his_o own_o honour_n and_o withal_o to_o draw_v we_o the_o more_o cheerful_o to_o obey_v and_o serve_v he_o we_o can_v be_v contain_v therein_o be_v to_o be_v put_v in_o execution_n have_v now_o examine_v the_o reason_n of_o this_o commandment_n rest_n for_o in_o the_o law_n show_v the_o equity_n of_o the_o proportion_v of_o the_o time_n set_v a_o part_n for_o this_o rest_n and_o show_v how_o it_o must_v be_v deduce_v and_o apply_v let_v we_o next_o consider_v the_o word_n wherein_o it_o be_v express_v this_o particle_n for_o refer_v both_o to_o our_o labour_n of_o six_o day_n and_o rest_n upon_o the_o seven_o &_o manifest_v the_o equity_n of_o the_o law_n in_o require_v such_o a_o rest_n of_o we_o as_o if_o we_o deal_v provident_o in_o manage_v our_o affair_n need_v not_o to_o hinder_v they_o see_v god_n allow_v as_o much_o time_n to_o we_o for_o the_o dispatch_n of_o our_o business_n as_o he_o take_v up_o in_o the_o creation_n of_o the_o world_n require_v no_o more_o of_o we_o but_o the_o set_n apart_o one_o day_n in_o seven_o to_o be_v keep_v holy_a in_o remembrance_n of_o the_o creation_n of_o the_o world_n and_o that_o too_o for_o our_o own_o comfort_n &_o improvement_n in_o grace_n and_o for_o the_o far_o quicken_n and_o strengthen_v of_o our_o soul_n work_n in_o six_o day_n god_n make_v all_o thing_n and_o therefore_o by_o six_o day_n labour_n can_v and_o will_v assist_v thou_o to_o dispatch_v all_o thy_o work_n as_o well_o as_o for_o his_o own_o honour_n and_o glory_n in_o six_o day_n god_n make_v heaven_n earth_n etc._n etc._n and_o therefore_o both_o be_v able_a and_o as_o a_o faithful_a creator_n will_v be_v ready_a to_o assist_v and_o prosper_v thou_o so_o in_o all_o thy_o labour_n that_o all_o thy_o business_n shall_v be_v dispatch_v in_o six_o day_n namely_o whatsoever_o thy_o calling_n and_o needful_a occasion_n shall_v require_v to_o be_v do_v as_o god_n thereby_o establish_v his_o work_n 1._o and_o rejoice_v in_o it_o but_o be_v mention_v here_o only_o as_o one_o of_o seven_o not_o as_o the_o last_o of_o seven_o this_o be_v not_o a_o total_a cessation_n whereof_o god_n be_v a_o continual_a act_n be_v uncapable_a but_o only_o a_o rest_n from_o work_n of_o creation_n and_o imply_v two_o act_n of_o god_n the_o first_o the_o establish_n and_o settle_v all_o his_o work_n to_o continue_v in_o himself_o according_a to_o his_o own_o ordinance_n psal_n 119.89_o 90_o 91._o the_o other_o his_o rejoice_v and_o delight_v himself_o in_o the_o work_n of_o his_o hand_n this_o rest_n of_o god_n be_v not_o as_o we_o for_o a_o day_n only_o for_o he_o never_o wrought_v in_o the_o work_n of_o creation_n any_o more_o and_o may_v perhaps_o point_v at_o mean_v in_o that_o place_n i_o grant_v indeed_o that_o the_o conclusion_n necessary_o follow_v out_o of_o these_o premise_n but_o i_o affirm_v withal_o that_o the_o major_a proposition_n be_v utter_o false_a and_o no_o way_n fute_v with_o the_o scope_n of_o the_o apostle_n in_o this_o disputation_n for_o it_o be_v true_a that_o notwithstanding_o god_n enter_v into_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o not_o be_v the_o rest_n out_o of_o which_o david_n threaten_v that_o they_o shall_v be_v exclude_v by_o unbelief_n whereunto_o if_o we_o add_v this_o minor_a or_o second_o proposition_n but_o into_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o sabbath_n god_n have_v enter_v from_o the_o foundation_n of_o the_o world_n there_o can_v follow_v no_o conclusion_n at_o all_o but_o if_o we_o add_v our_o minor_a be_v no_o other_o argument_n but_o this_o which_o we_o have_v already_o produce_v to_o prove_v thta_fw-mi the_o apostle_n although_o he_o name_v only_a god_n rest_v on_o the_o sabbath_n day_n yet_o must_v necessary_o imply_v man_n rest_v on_o that_o day_n as_o well_o as_o god_n and_o that_o man_n enter_v into_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o sabbath_n suit_n most_o full_o with_o the_o apostle_n scope_n but_o god_n enter_v into_o that_o rest_n make_v
nothing_o to_o his_o purpose_n in_o this_o disputation_n unless_o it_o be_v to_o show_v the_o ground_n of_o man_n rest_n at_o the_o same_o time_n it_o may_v sufficient_o satisfy_v any_o man_n that_o be_v willing_a to_o be_v guide_v by_o reason_n notwithstanding_o as_o we_o have_v take_v notice_n of_o the_o main_a drift_n at_o which_o the_o apostle_n aim_v in_o this_o disputation_n so_o it_o will_v not_o be_v amiss_o to_o consider_v the_o ground_n which_o the_o apostle_n lay_v for_o the_o raise_n of_o his_o argument_n to_o prove_v then_o that_o david_n threaten_v unbeliever_n to_o be_v shut_v out_o of_o heaven_n which_o he_o here_o call_v by_o the_o name_n of_o god_n rest_n he_o lay_v this_o for_o his_o ground_n that_o this_o name_n of_o god_n rest_n can_v be_v apply_v only_o to_o three_o thing_n the_o sabbath_n canaan_n and_o heaven_n now_o these_o three_o be_v all_o member_n under_o one_o general_a head_n and_o distinguish_v one_o from_o another_o must_v needs_o have_v something_o common_a to_o they_o all_o and_o something_o proper_a and_o peculiar_a wherein_o they_o differ_v that_o which_o be_v common_a to_o they_o all_o be_v first_o that_o they_o be_v god_n rest_v that_o be_v rest_v which_o god_n ordain_v for_o and_o bestow_v upon_o man_n second_o that_o they_o be_v therefore_o rest_v into_o which_o man_n may_v enter_v the_o difference_n between_o these_o rest_v be_v that_o two_o of_o they_o be_v possess_v by_o man_n already_o and_o one_o of_o they_o be_v yet_o to_o come_v now_o the_o prophet_n david_n word_n express_o mention_v a_o rest_n to_o come_v and_o to_o conceive_v and_o affirm_v that_o the_o apostle_n build_v his_o argument_n upon_o this_o distinction_n as_o it_o plain_o appear_v he_o do_v shall_v impertinent_o intend_v to_o bring_v in_o speak_v of_o a_o rest_n to_o come_v but_o moses_n speak_v of_o a_o rest_n past_a therefore_o david_n can_v mean_v the_o rest_n of_o the_o sabbath_n of_o which_o moses_n speak_v which_o be_v enter_v into_o so_o long_o before_o and_o again_o v._o 5._o he_o take_v up_o the_o same_o opposition_n in_o these_o word_n and_o in_o this_o place_n of_o david_n again_o if_o they_o shall_v enter_v both_o in_o the_o 3._o and_o 5._o vers_fw-la the_o apostle_n insist_o upon_o david_n expression_n if_o they_o shall_v enter_v which_o he_o show_v can_v refer_v to_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o sabbath_n which_o be_v enter_v into_o as_o moses_n relate_v long_v before_o now_o wherein_o stand_v this_o opposition_n between_o the_o relation_n of_o moses_n that_o god_n rest_v the_o seven_o day_n &_o david_n intermination_n they_o shall_v not_o enter_v there_o be_v no_o opposition_n between_o these_o two_o expression_n god_n have_v enter_v and_o they_o shall_v not_o enter_v but_o between_o these_o two_o they_o have_v enter_v and_o they_o shall_v not_o enter_v there_o be_v a_o manifest_a opposition_n whereas_o therefore_o the_o apostle_n press_v strong_o this_o opposition_n ver_fw-la 3._o &_o deliver_n of_o the_o law_n by_o moses_n to_o this_o we_o answer_v that_o it_o must_v needs_o be_v that_o man_n rest_v be_v principal_o and_o direct_o intend_v in_o that_o place_n by_o the_o apostle_n although_o it_o be_v not_o express_o mention_v &_o that_o god_n rest_v be_v only_o name_v as_o the_o ground_n of_o the_o institution_n of_o man_n rest_n so_o that_o when_o he_o affirm_v that_o god_n rest_v from_o the_o foundation_n of_o the_o world_n he_o imply_v that_o man_n rest_v with_o he_o at_o the_o same_o time_n see_v as_o we_o have_v show_v the_o whole_a weight_n of_o his_o argument_n lie_v upon_o man_n and_o not_o upon_o god_n rest_v and_o when_o he_o affirm_v that_o man_n have_v already_o enter_v into_o that_o rest_n it_o be_v fit_a for_o he_o to_o assign_v the_o time_n when_o this_o place_n principal_o intend_v and_o mean_v man_n rest_v on_o the_o sabbath_n mention_n notwithstanding_o only_a god_n rest_v on_o the_o sabbath_n day_n but_o speak_v not_o a_o word_n of_o man_n rest_v on_o that_o day_n and_o prove_v that_o out_o of_o gen._n 2.2_o when_o he_o may_v as_o easy_o have_v prove_v the_o other_o out_o of_o the_o verse_n follow_v to_o this_o we_o answer_v that_o therein_o beside_o man_n because_o they_o be_v

worship_n take_v not_o up_o the_o whole_a day_n it_o must_v needs_o be_v grant_v therefore_o the_o lord_n appoint_v that_o day_n of_o holy_a rest_n for_o the_o performance_n of_o something_o more_o unto_o god_n then_o public_a worship_n and_o so_o much_o be_v express_o affirm_v isa_n 58.13_o where_o we_o be_v forbid_v to_o find_v our_o own_o pleasure_n or_o speak_v our_o own_o word_n upon_o that_o day_n which_o as_o all_o man_n must_v acknowledge_v must_v needs_o extend_v to_o the_o order_n of_o our_o carriage_n in_o private_a as_o well_o as_o in_o public_a so_o that_o the_o set_v apart_o of_o a_o whole_a day_n of_o rest_n unto_o god_n for_o his_o public_a and_o private_a worship_n seem_v to_o be_v the_o full_a scope_n of_o this_o four_o commandment_n next_o to_o the_o scope_n
