of_o the_o sacrament_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n among_o the_o corinthian_n for_o this_o cause_n many_o be_v weak_a and_o sick_a among_o you_o and_o many_o sleep_n and_o so_o that_o which_o in_o itself_o right_o use_v be_v a_o mean_n of_o health_n for_o soul_n and_o body_n be_v by_o their_o ignorance_n and_o abuse_v the_o cause_n of_o many_o grievous_a disease_n &_o mortality_n among_o they_o so_o it_o may_v come_v to_o pass_v that_o whereas_o by_o this_o mean_v we_o seek_v to_o pacify_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n already_o break_v out_o against_o we_o which_o also_o we_o shall_v do_v in_o time_n if_o it_o be_v right_o use_v for_o the_o neglect_n or_o abuse_v of_o it_o or_o both_o the_o plague_n shall_v not_o only_o not_o stay_v but_o we_o shall_v further_o provoke_v the_o lord_n to_o strike_v us._n â—rts_n o_v conâ—teth_v of_o two_o â—rts_n this_o exercise_n therefore_o of_o fast_v consist_v of_o two_o part_n the_o one_o be_v outward_a the_o other_o inward_a the_o outward_a appertain_v to_o the_o body_n and_o be_v call_v a_o bodily_a exercise_n as_o to_o abstain_v from_o meat_n drink_n sleep_n and_o such_o like_a which_o of_o itself_o without_o the_o other_o be_v nothing_o worth_a though_o command_v of_o god_n the_o other_o be_v belong_v to_o the_o soul_n and_o consist_v in_o the_o inward_a virtue_n and_o grace_n of_o the_o mind_n holpen_v forward_o by_o this_o bodily_a exercise_n and_o this_o simple_o and_o in_o it_o own_o nature_n be_v profitable_a as_o have_v the_o promise_n of_o this_o life_n and_o of_o the_o life_n to_o come_v and_o of_o both_o these_o the_o apostle_n write_v unto_o timothy_n 4.8_o tim._n 4.8_o say_v exercise_v thyself_o unto_o godliness_n for_o bodily_a exercise_n profit_v little_a but_o godliness_n be_v profitable_a unto_o all_o thing_n which_o have_v the_o promise_n of_o the_o life_n present_a and_o of_o that_o that_o be_v to_o come_v where_o he_o say_v that_o godliness_n and_o the_o pure_a worship_n of_o god_n consist_v in_o the_o inward_a grace_n of_o the_o mind_n as_o in_o humility_n faith_n repentance_n etc._n etc._n be_v profitable_a in_o it_o own_o nature_n but_o fast_v and_o all_o such_o exercise_n of_o the_o body_n and_o austerity_n of_o life_n be_v so_o far_o forth_o profitable_a as_o they_o farther_z we_o in_o these_o therefore_o as_o the_o whole_a man_n consist_v of_o soul_n and_o body_n but_o the_o soul_n be_v most_o principal_a so_o do_v this_o exercise_n of_o fast_v consist_v of_o these_o two_o part_n whereof_o this_o late_a appertain_v to_o the_o soul_n be_v the_o chief_a and_o as_o in_o the_o sanctification_n of_o the_o sabbath_n there_o be_v two_o thing_n the_o one_o to_o rest_v from_o all_o bodily_a labour_n appertain_v to_o the_o body_n the_o other_o to_o sanctify_v that_o time_n of_o rest_n belong_v chief_o to_o the_o soul_n which_o be_v the_o principal_a end_n of_o the_o other_o so_o in_o fast_v there_o be_v these_o two_o thing_n to_o be_v consider_v the_o one_o to_o abstain_v from_o all_o food_n which_o direct_o concern_v the_o body_n the_o other_o be_v the_o end_n why_o we_o use_v that_o abstinence_n which_o be_v to_o further_a our_o soul_n in_o godliness_n which_o be_v the_o chief_a of_o all_o and_o give_v life_n to_o the_o other_o even_o as_o the_o soul_n do_v to_o the_o body_n therefore_o though_o abstinence_n be_v necessary_o require_v what_o be_v the_o inward_a virtue_n to_o be_v adjoin_v unto_o it_o and_o to_o which_o end_n the_o other_o be_v undertake_v the_o former_a be_v a_o abstinence_n for_o a_o time_n whole_o from_o all_o the_o commodity_n and_o pleasure_n of_o this_o life_n thereby_o to_o make_v we_o fit_a for_o the_o inward_a grace_n of_o the_o mind_n as_o to_o abstain_v from_o meat_n and_o drink_v &_o sleep_n and_o such_o like_a that_o the_o body_n be_v thereby_o humble_v and_o pull_v down_o the_o mind_n thereby_o may_v be_v humble_v and_o cast_v down_o also_o in_o itself_o fore_o god_n so_o that_o this_o outward_a abstinence_n be_v therefore_o command_v that_o we_o may_v feel_v in_o our_o soul_n and_o in_o feel_v outward_o may_v profess_v that_o we_o be_v unworthy_a for_o our_o sin_n either_o of_o life_n or_o of_o any_o thing_n that_o belong_v to_o the_o uphold_v of_o it_o and_o therefore_o we_o do_v willing_o for_o a_o time_n bereave_v ourselves_o of_o the_o use_n of_o they_o so_o that_o purgation_n when_o as_o it_o may_v fall_v out_o that_o then_o he_o be_v in_o consumption_n and_o so_o have_v more_o need_n of_o some_o cordial_a electuary_n or_o restorative_n medicine_n than_o of_o any_o purgation_n and_o if_o any_o shall_v so_o unaduised_o prescribe_v we_o will_v count_v he_o a_o fool_n rather_o than_o a_o physician_n but_o as_o he_o that_o be_v skilful_a in_o his_o art_n and_o conscionable_a towards_o his_o patient_n will_v minister_v nothing_o unto_o he_o either_o for_o purge_v or_o blood-letting_n but_o he_o will_v consider_v not_o only_o the_o state_n of_o his_o body_n or_o cold_a or_o temperate_a and_o accord_o he_o will_v give_v his_o direction_n it_o but_o we_o must_v have_v a_o care_n diligent_o to_o observe_v it_o so_o the_o governor_n of_o the_o church_n who_o in_o this_o respect_n may_v be_v call_v the_o spiritual_a physician_n of_o our_o soul_n in_o prescribe_v of_o this_o abstinence_n and_o diet_n as_o it_o be_v for_o the_o cure_n of_o our_o soul_n that_o be_v for_o the_o bring_n of_o we_o to_o humility_n and_o repentance_n for_o our_o sin_n must_v have_v principal_a regard_n to_o the_o time_n and_o to_o the_o quality_n of_o the_o time_n as_o whether_o it_o be_v a_o time_n of_o sorrow_n or_o of_o joy_n that_o so_o they_o may_v know_v which_o be_v the_o sit_v season_n for_o it_o which_o we_o have_v hear_v to_o be_v the_o time_n of_o affliction_n and_o then_o it_o must_v not_o only_o be_v in_o wisdom_n prescribe_v of_o they_o but_o also_o diligent_o use_v of_o the_o people_n if_o they_o will_v recover_v the_o health_n of_o their_o soul_n even_o as_o physic_n must_v not_o only_o be_v prescribe_v of_o the_o wise_a physician_n in_o time_n convenient_a but_o â—â—e_v patient_a in_o take_v of_o it_o must_v not_o neglect_v the_o â—ime_n appoint_v by_o he_o so_o that_o in_o this_o holy_a exercise_n as_o in_o all_o other_o thing_n the_o godly_a wise_a and_o they_o that_o look_v to_o get_v any_o good_a by_o it_o must_v regard_v what_o be_v the_o time_n that_o god_n have_v appoint_v they_o to_o use_v it_o and_o herein_o they_o must_v learn_v wisdom_n of_o the_o child_n of_o this_o world_n who_o observe_v the_o time_n for_o harvest_n and_o for_o seed_n and_o know_v what_o be_v fit_a for_o every_o time_n so_o they_o must_v know_v what_o be_v the_o time_n for_o every_o duty_n and_o accord_o practice_v the_o same_o but_o to_o proceed_v in_o this_o doctrine_n of_o fast_v as_o we_o have_v hitherto_o see_v the_o time_n when_o this_o holy_a exercise_n ought_v to_o be_v undertake_v of_o all_o christian_n even_o the_o time_n of_o sorrow_n for_o the_o want_n of_o some_o benefit_n or_o presence_n or_o fear_n of_o some_o punishment_n so_o now_o we_o be_v far_a to_o consider_v in_o few_o word_n how_o long_o it_o shall_v continue_v that_o be_v when_o we_o see_v that_o we_o have_v cause_n to_o fast_o and_o mind_n to_o do_v it_o how_o long_o the_o time_n of_o our_o fast_n shall_v last_v cause_n the_o time_n oâ—_n a_o fast_o must_v be_v long_o or_o short_a according_a to_o the_o greatness_n of_o the_o cause_n and_o for_o this_o one_o point_n i_o do_v general_o answer_v thus_o much_o that_o it_o must_v be_v always_o according_a to_o the_o greatness_n of_o our_o affliction_n or_o according_a to_o the_o need_n than_o we_o have_v to_o be_v humble_v more_o or_o less_o and_o so_o sometime_o it_o ought_v to_o be_v long_o and_o sometime_o short_a according_a to_o the_o discreet_a wisdom_n of_o those_o to_o who_o it_o belong_v to_o appoint_v the_o same_o this_o always_o provide_v that_o when_o it_o be_v the_o short_a we_o must_v continue_v it_o at_o the_o least_o for_o one_o whole_a day_n that_o be_v from_o evening_n to_o the_o next_o day_n at_o the_o same_o time_n in_o which_o time_n we_o must_v whole_o abstain_v from_o any_o breakfast_n in_o the_o morning_n or_o dinner_n at_o noon_n &_o from_o the_o morning_n at_o the_o least_o to_o the_o evening_n they_o must_v give_v themselves_o to_o all_o good_a exercise_n of_o the_o word_n and_o prayer_n sing_v of_o psalm_n least_o and_o it_o must_v be_v always_o hold_v one_o day_n at_o the_o least_o meditate_v upon_o their_o sin_n and_o upon_o the_o present_a affliction_n and_o such_o like_a public_o and_o private_o and_o thus_o be_v the_o time_n of_o fast_v limit_v unto_o we_o in_o the_o word_n of_o god_n for_o moses_n speak_v of_o that_o yearly_a day_n of_o fast_v which_o be_v prescribe_v unto_o the_o jew_n call_v it_o a_o day_n of_o reconciliation_n 23.27_o â—eu_n 23.27_o say_v the_o ten_o of_o the_o seven_o month_n shall_v be_v a_o
