nor_o any_o that_o be_v more_o greedy_a for_o the_o thing_n of_o the_o world_n in_o answer_n to_o this_o objection_n i_o shall_v first_o say_v somewhat_o to_o the_o professor_n of_o religion_n and_o you_o be_v agree_v that_o christianity_n be_v the_o only_a way_n to_o happiness_n and_o consequent_o that_o you_o be_v all_o profess_a christian_n and_o one_o will_v think_v that_o where_o man_n be_v so_o far_o satisfy_v of_o the_o end_n and_o of_o the_o way_n we_o may_v conceive_v great_a hope_n of_o their_o sincerity_n and_o salvation_n but_o when_o we_o see_v that_o man_n life_n do_v nullify_v their_o profession_n and_o that_o while_o they_o look_v towards_o god_n they_o row_v towards_o the_o world_n and_o while_o they_o hope_v for_o heaven_n their_o daily_a travel_n be_v towards_o hell_n and_o while_o they_o plead_v for_o christ_n they_o work_v against_o he_o our_o hope_n of_o they_o be_v turn_v to_o necessary_a lamentation_n but_o how_o come_v this_o to_o pass_v that_o reasonable_a man_n yea_o man_n repute_v wise_a and_o learned_a yea_o many_o that_o seem_v religious_a to_o other_o and_o to_o themselves_o shall_v be_v so_o shameful_o over_o see_v in_o a_o matter_n that_o so_o concern_v their_o everlasting_a state_n as_o far_o as_o i_o be_o able_a to_o discover_v the_o cause_n of_o this_o calamity_n be_v these_o two_o 1._o one_o part_n of_o the_o profess_a christian_n of_o the_o world_n understand_v not_o what_o christianity_n be_v and_o so_o profess_v but_o the_o empty_a name_n when_o indeed_o the_o thing_n itself_o which_o be_v in_o their_o conception_n and_o which_o they_o mean_v in_o that_o profession_n be_v nothing_o like_o to_o true_a christianity_n 2._o the_o other_o part_n of_o miscarry_v professor_n though_o they_o do_v conceive_v of_o the_o christian_a religion_n as_o it_o be_v yet_o not_o with_o a_o apprehension_n intensive_o answerable_a to_o the_o thing_n which_o they_o apprehend_v though_o their_o conception_n of_o the_o christian_a verity_n have_v a_o moral_a truth_n in_o they_o it_o be_v not_o false_a but_o true_a which_o they_o conceive_v yet_o there_o be_v no_o firmness_n and_o solidity_n in_o the_o act_n and_o so_o they_o do_v not_o effectual_o apprehend_v they_o nothing_o more_o easy_a more_o common_a and_o more_o dangerous_a then_o to_o make_v a_o religion_n either_o of_o name_n and_o word_n which_o he_o that_o use_v do_v not_o understand_v or_o of_o mere_a speculation_n and_o superficial_a conceit_n which_o never_o become_v practical_a habituate_v and_o predominant_a nor_o be_v the_o serious_a effectual_a apprehension_n of_o the_o man_n a_o right_a object_n and_o a_o sincere_a and_o serious_a act_n do_v essential_o constitute_v the_o christian_n faith_n if_o either_o be_v want_v it_o be_v not_o that_o faith_n whatever_o it_o may_v pretend_v to_o be_v nothing_o but_o the_o gospel_n object_n will_v suffice_v to_o a_o man_n salvation_n be_v it_o never_o so_o firm_o apprehend_v and_o nothing_o but_o a_o firm_a and_o serious_a belief_n of_o those_o object_n will_v make_v they_o effectual_a or_o save_v to_o the_o believer_n be_v we_o able_a to_o cure_v the_o two_o forementioned_a defect_n and_o to_o help_v you_o all_o to_o these_o two_o requisite_n we_o shall_v make_v no_o question_n but_o you_o will_v all_o be_v save_v we_o can_v expect_v that_o man_n shall_v let_v go_v their_o sensual_a delight_n till_o they_o hear_v of_o somewhat_o better_a to_o be_v have_v for_o they_o and_o till_o they_o firm_o and_o hearty_o give_v credit_n to_o the_o report_n and_o because_o the_o matter_n before_o we_o punishment_n and_o the_o possession_n of_o some_o delight_n of_o which_o they_o have_v mere_o sensual_a concert_n and_o so_o they_o think_v of_o christ_n as_o one_o that_o come_v to_o free_v they_o from_o such_o punishment_n and_o help_v they_o to_o such_o a_o happiness_n as_o this_o and_o as_o for_o the_o true_a knowledge_n and_o fruition_n of_o god_n in_o love_n and_o heavenly_a delight_n they_o look_v upon_o these_o either_o as_o insignificant_a mean_n or_o as_o certain_a appurtenance_n and_o fruit_n of_o religion_n which_o we_o ought_v to_o have_v but_o may_v possible_o be_v without_o though_o we_o be_v true_a believer_n a_o confidence_n that_o christ_n have_v free_v they_o from_o torment_n and_o make_v they_o righteous_a by_o imputation_n of_o his_o obedience_n unto_o so_o use_v you_o can_v only_o part_v with_o your_o substance_n when_o god_n call_v for_o it_o but_o even_o take_v joyful_o the_o spoil_n of_o your_o good_n as_o know_v that_o you_o have_v a_o better_a and_o more_o endure_a substance_n in_o heaven_n heb._n 10._o 33_o 44._o you_o will_v reckâ—n_v that_o the_o suffering_n of_o this_o present_a time_n be_v not_o worthy_a to_o be_v compare_v with_o the_o glory_n which_o shall_v be_v reveal_v in_o we_o rom._n 8._o 18._o in_o a_o word_n you_o can_v deny_v yourselves_o for_o sake_n all_o and_o follow_v christ_n in_o expectation_n of_o a_o their_o chief_a end_n 8._o last_o that_o be_v your_o ultimate_a end_n which_o you_o think_v in_o your_o practical_a judgement_n you_o can_v never_o love_v or_o labour_n for_o too_o much_o i_o know_v there_o be_v scarce_o a_o worldling_n to_o be_v find_v which_o will_v not_o give_v it_o you_o under_o his_o hand_n as_o his_o settle_a judgement_n that_o its_o god_n and_o glory_n only_o that_o can_v be_v love_v too_o much_o and_o he_o will_v confess_v that_o he_o love_v the_o world_n too_o much_o â—ut_v yet_o he_o do_v it_o while_o he_o confess_v it_o and_o he_o deny_v his_o chief_a love_n to_o even_o while_o they_o speak_v disgraceful_o of_o the_o world_n they_o think_v they_o can_v never_o have_v too_o much_o of_o it_o nor_o will_v they_o think_v they_o can_v ever_o do_v too_o much_o for_o it_o be_v it_o not_o that_o over_n for_o one_o part_n of_o their_o worldly_a interest_n do_v deprive_v they_o of_o another_o part_n i_o have_v now_o tell_v you_o how_o you_o may_v discern_v whether_o it_o be_v god_n or_o the_o world_n that_o live_v in_o your_o heart_n and_o whether_o you_o be_v dead_a to_o god_n or_o to_o the_o world_n what_o remain_v but_o that_o you_o take_v it_o home_o and_o apply_v it_o yet_o close_o than_o i_o can_v do_v and_o try_v what_o god_n it_o be_v that_o you_o adore_v and_o what_o felicity_n it_o be_v that_o you_o esteem_v and_o intend_v and_o consequent_o and_o land_n and_o full_a provision_n for_o themselves_o and_o they_o that_o they_o may_v be_v clothe_v with_o the_o best_a and_o fare_v of_o the_o best_a and_o sit_v with_o the_o high_a and_o be_v honour_v and_o reverence_v of_o all_o how_o fine_a a_o life_n do_v this_o seem_v to_o they_o if_o they_o have_v but_o a_o fair_a opportunity_n to_o rise_v how_o little_a tender_a be_v they_o of_o they_o shall_v make_v profession_n of_o their_o faith_n and_o how_o far_o they_o shall_v conceal_v it_o from_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o world_n and_o so_o as_o paul_n say_v they_o account_v gain_n to_o be_v godliness_n 1_o tim._n 6._o 5._o not_o only_o esteem_v it_o better_o than_o downright_a godliness_n but_o measure_v out_o their_o godliness_n by_o their_o gain_n make_v that_o to_o seem_v religious_a which_o fit_v their_o carnal_a end_n and_o easy_o believe_v that_o which_o be_v for_o their_o worldly_a interest_n how_o weak_a and_o silly_a reason_n will_v persuade_v they_o that_o the_o world_n to_o be_v matter_n of_o so_o much_o worth_n or_o weight_n as_o to_o be_v prefer_v before_o the_o honour_n of_o your_o lord_n and_o the_o good_a of_o soul_n it_o will_v grieve_v you_o more_o to_o hear_v the_o reproach_n of_o the_o ungodly_a against_o the_o way_n and_o servant_n of_o god_n than_o all_o your_o wealth_n will_v do_v you_o good_a do_v it_o not_o go_v to_o your_o heart_n to_o hear_v poor_a blind_a sinner_n on_o all_o occasion_n reproach_v your_o holy_a profession_n and_o say_v there_o be_v none_o more_o proud_a and_o covetous_a and_o unmerciful_a than_o these_o professor_n of_o so_o much_o strictness_n and_o holiness_n though_o for_o the_o general_a it_o be_v a_o malignant_a satanical_a slander_n yet_o take_v heed_n as_o you_o love_v the_o honour_n of_o god_n and_o of_o his_o holy_a truth_n and_o way_n and_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n that_o you_o give_v not_o occasion_n of_o such_o reproach_n sect_n xxii_o use_v for_o consolation_n and_o further_a persuasion_n have_v say_v this_o much_o to_o you_o for_o the_o crucify_a the_o world_n and_o the_o use_v it_o as_o a_o crucify_a thing_n i_o shall_v here_o brief_o enumerate_v some_o of_o the_o great_a benefit_n which_o will_v follow_v to_o yourselves_o where_o this_o be_v do_v and_o this_o i_o shall_v do_v in_o order_n to_o these_o two_o end_n conjunct_o 1._o that_o those_o to_o who_o the_o world_n be_v crucify_v may_v lay_v to_o heart_n the_o greatness_n of_o the_o mercy_n &_o be_v thankful_a to_o god_n that_o have_v do_v so_o much_o for_o they_o there_o be_v the_o great_a need_n of_o encouragement_n and_o comfort_n to_o the_o soul_n in_o our_o crucifixion_n to_o the_o world_n because_o it_o be_v a_o state_n of_o so_o much_o suffer_v to_o the_o body_n and_o a_o work_n that_o require_v so_o much_o self-denial_n and_o patience_n who_o will_v be_v persuade_v to_o cast_v all_o overboard_o and_o forsake_v all_o the_o pleasure_n and_o profit_n of_o this_o world_n but_o he_o that_o know_v of_o somewhat_o to_o be_v get_v by_o it_o that_o will_v make_v he_o a_o gainer_n or_o a_o saver_n in_o the_o end_n
