be_v unknown_a unto_o they_o and_o far_o enough_o from_o they_o second_o as_o for_o spiritual_a joy_n the_o comfort_n and_o consolation_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n they_o be_v to_o seek_v also_o in_o these_o they_o be_v stranger_n to_o it_o and_o meddle_v not_o with_o it_o this_o be_v the_o hide_a manna_n and_o the_o white_a stone_n which_o no_o man_n know_v save_v he_o that_o receive_v it_o the_o spirit_n in_o the_o witness_n of_o it_o be_v a_o mystery_n to_o a_o carnal_a heart_n this_o be_v honey_n which_o such_o person_n never_o taste_v nor_o have_v any_o sense_n or_o apprehension_n of_o the_o true_a joy_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n indeed_o which_o be_v not_o only_o cheer_v but_o purge_v not_o only_o fill_v with_o comfort_n but_o quicken_a to_o duty_n and_o encourage_v and_o engage_v to_o obedience_n this_o be_v such_o as_o they_o be_v unacquainted_a with_o it_o and_o but_o ignorant_a of_o it_o which_o be_v a_o peace_n and_o joy_n above_o all_o that_o the_o world_n can_v confer_v three_o the_o spirituality_n of_o holy_a exercise_n and_o duty_n of_o piety_n carnal_a person_n they_o be_v ignorant_a of_o this_o likewise_o they_o can_v come_v off_o with_o some_o external_a performance_n as_o prayer_n and_o read_v and_o hear_v of_o the_o word_n and_o the_o like_a so_o far_o as_o they_o concern_v the_o outward_a man_n and_o as_o they_o be_v to_o be_v do_v by_o that_o but_o to_o perform_v they_o after_o a_o spiritual_a manner_n and_o to_o enjoy_v communion_n with_o god_n himself_o in_o the_o performance_n of_o they_o this_o be_v that_o which_o be_v a_o riddle_n to_o they_o and_o they_o understand_v not_o nor_o know_v not_o what_o to_o make_v of_o it_o a_o natural_a man_n he_o know_v not_o what_o belong_v to_o the_o spirit_n of_o adoption_n and_o to_o the_o go_v to_o god_n as_o to_o a_o father_n in_o christ_n he_o know_v not_o what_o belong_v to_o the_o improvement_n of_o faith_n and_o to_o the_o get_n of_o strength_n in_o his_o inward_a man_n occasional_o from_o those_o duty_n of_o christianity_n which_o be_v perform_v by_o he_o as_o a_o man_n receive_v strength_n in_o his_o body_n from_o that_o nourishment_n which_o be_v convey_v in_o his_o meat_n four_o the_o exactness_n of_o christian_a obedience_n and_o the_o inward_a life_n and_o power_n of_o religion_n this_o be_v also_o a_o secret_a and_o mystery_n to_o a_o unregenerate_a spirit_n a_o natural_a man_n he_o may_v conform_v to_o some_o good_a thing_n in_o religion_n which_o carry_v no_o great_a difficulty_n in_o they_o and_o which_o do_v not_o cross_v he_o in_o his_o dear_a lust_n but_o as_o for_o other_o he_o be_v more_o weak_a and_o indispose_v the_o precept_n of_o self-denial_n and_o mortification_n and_o repentance_n and_o the_o trade_n of_o piety_n in_o holiness_n and_o righteousness_n of_o life_n and_o conversation_n these_o be_v more_o grievous_a to_o he_o faith_n and_o patience_n and_o love_n of_o enemy_n and_o forbearance_n of_o revenge_n and_o such_o thing_n as_o these_o the_o more_o refine_a and_o sublime_a part_n of_o religion_n as_o consist_v in_o such_o matter_n as_o these_o be_v this_o be_v such_o as_o a_o carnal_a heart_n do_v very_o much_o stumble_v at_o and_o be_v offend_v with_o it_o five_o perseverance_n and_o continuance_n in_o the_o faith_n and_o profession_n of_o christianity_n notwithstanding_o all_o adventure_n in_o the_o multitude_n and_o violence_n of_o temptation_n in_o the_o change_n and_o variation_n of_o providence_n still_o to_o abide_v and_o remain_v the_o same_o and_o to_o hold_v out_o and_o to_o persist_v not_o whence_o this_o wind_n come_v so_o neither_o whither_o it_o go_v nor_o what_o it_o tend_v to_o in_o the_o bless_a fruit_n and_o effect_n and_o consequence_n of_o it_o carnal_a person_n they_o common_o think_v of_o heaven_n as_o of_o a_o carnal_a place_n and_o as_o of_o a_o carnal_a condition_n a_o fool_n paradise_n such_o as_o turk_n and_o pagan_n and_o infidel_n fancy_n to_o themselves_o or_o at_o least_o in_o some_o affinity_n and_o nearness_n thereunto_o they_o be_v not_o partaker_n nor_o any_o way_n discerner_n of_o the_o glory_n that_o be_v to_o be_v reveal_v thus_o we_o see_v how_o as_o to_o all_o particular_n as_o concern_v the_o work_n of_o regeneration_n such_o person_n as_o be_v themselves_o unregenerate_a and_o but_o in_o the_o state_n of_o nature_n be_v ignorant_a and_o inapprehensive_a of_o it_o now_o there_o be_v a_o double_a account_n which_o may_v be_v give_v hereof_o unto_o we_o the_o one_o be_v take_v from_o the_o impotency_n of_o humane_a reason_n and_o be_v better_o reform_v and_o amend_v their_o life_n and_o who_o but_o they_o but_o let_v they_o try_v but_o for_o a_o little_a while_n let_v they_o meet_v but_o with_o some_o strong_a temptation_n which_o they_o be_v to_o resist_v or_o fall_v upon_o some_o difficult_a duty_n which_o they_o be_v to_o perform_v and_o they_o be_v present_o weary_a of_o those_o purpose_n and_o endeavour_n and_o grow_v as_o bad_a as_o before_o why_o what_o be_v the_o reason_n of_o all_o this_o because_o they_o want_v this_o principle_n of_o spiritual_a strength_n in_o they_o their_o strength_n it_o be_v but_o the_o strength_n of_o nature_n or_o custom_n or_o some_o carnal_a consideration_n it_o be_v not_o strength_n from_o the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n and_o this_o be_v the_o comfort_n it_o bring_v with_o they_o whereas_o true_a spiritual_a strength_n indeed_o it_o have_v perseverance_n attend_v upon_o it_o they_o shall_v run_v and_o not_o be_v weary_a the_o three_o and_o last_o be_v walk_v they_o shall_v walk_v and_o not_o faint_a walk_v it_o be_v less_o than_o run_v and_o faint_v it_o be_v more_o than_o weariness_n if_o then_o those_o which_o run_v be_v not_o weary_a the_o same_o when_o they_o walk_v shall_v not_o faint_v this_o will_v necessary_o follow_v hereupon_o but_o the_o main_a scope_n and_o drift_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n by_o these_o phrase_n and_o expression_n be_v no_o fasten_v some_o different_a and_o distinct_a notion_n upon_o they_o and_o so_o now_o here_o in_o not_o faint_v we_o have_v the_o courage_n and_o magnanimity_n of_o a_o christian_a exhibit_v to_o we_o it_o be_v that_o which_o we_o often_o meet_v withal_o in_o scripture_n in_o sundry_a place_n as_o commend_v to_o our_o endeavour_n rev._n 2.3_o it_o be_v the_o commendation_n of_o the_o church_n of_o any_o thing_n in_o religion_n they_o know_v there_o be_v somewhat_o more_o in_o it_o and_o according_o consider_v it_o and_o that_o be_v in_o reference_n to_o sin_n and_o to_o work_v man_n to_o a_o detestation_n of_o it_o and_o mourn_v for_o it_o now_o therefore_o those_o that_o do_v so_o of_o themselves_o they_o do_v so_o far_o forth_o make_v it_o needless_a and_o superfluous_a with_o they_o they_o that_o cry_v before_o correction_n they_o shall_v not_o need_v to_o cry_v after_o it_o or_o to_o cry_v in_o it_o and_o they_o that_o of_o themselves_o do_v sigh_n and_o mourn_v for_o the_o common_a abomination_n they_o shall_v not_o need_v to_o be_v afflict_v thereby_o to_o make_v they_o mourn_v and_o god_n love_v not_o at_o all_o to_o afflict_v more_o than_o needs_o must_v the_o there_o be_v divers_a sort_n of_o person_n in_o the_o world_n which_o come_v short_a of_o this_o duty_n and_o practice_n of_o sigh_v and_o cry_v for_o these_o abomination_n which_o we_o may_v brief_o take_v notice_n of_o by_o way_n of_o illustration_n first_o those_o that_o practsse_v they_o and_o do_v rather_o add_v unto_o they_o those_o that_o make_v the_o abomination_n be_v far_o enough_o from_o mourning_n for_o they_o and_o so_o consequent_o far_o enough_o from_o this_o privilege_n here_o mention_v in_o the_o text_n of_o have_v a_o mark_n set_v upon_o they_o therefore_o in_o this_o sigh_v and_o cry_v be_v include_v mend_v and_o reform_v it_o be_v not_o enough_o for_o any_o in_o these_o case_n only_o to_o cry_v out_o upon_o other_o and_o to_o seem_v to_o bewail_v the_o wickedness_n which_o be_v do_v in_o the_o land_n or_o do_v in_o the_o city_n and_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n to_o allow_v or_o nourish_v the_o same_o or_o like_a wickedness_n in_o themselves_o but_o it_o imply_v a_o absolute_a hatred_n and_o loathe_n of_o those_o thing_n in_o their_o own_o heart_n he_o that_o true_o and_o sincere_o bewail_v and_o lament_n other_o abomination_n he_o be_v careful_a to_o suppress_v his_o own_o and_o as_o much_o as_o may_v be_v to_o withdraw_v and_o abstain_v from_o they_o whosoever_o they_o be_v that_o do_v otherwise_o they_o fall_v short_a both_o of_o the_o duty_n and_o of_o the_o mercy_n of_o the_o duty_n of_o sigh_v and_o cry_v and_o of_o the_o mercy_n of_o be_v preserve_v and_o exempt_v from_o judgement_n and_o destruction_n in_o reference_n thereunto_o as_o be_v here_o declare_v of_o such_o person_n second_o such_o as_o some_o also_o there_o be_v that_o do_v encourage_v other_o in_o wickedness_n and_o not_o only_o not_o restrain_v they_o but_o rather_o countenance_v they_o and_o further_o they_o in_o it_o these_o be_v also_o very_o far_o from_o this_o performance_n yea_o indeed_o quite_o opposite_a to_o it_o and_o so_o instead_o of_o receive_v a_o mark_n of_o preservation_n upon_o their_o forehead_n may_v rather_o expect_v to_o receive_v a_o mark_n of_o vengeance_n and_o destruction_n upon_o their_o person_n three_o which_o be_v a_o low_a degree_n of_o it_o which_o do_v not_o lay_v the_o sin_n and_o abominatin_n to_o their_o heart_n which_o be_v not_o humble_v for_o they_o which_o it_o concern_v they_o and_o become_v they_o to_o be_v and_o this_o be_v that_o which_o we_o be_v now_o at_o this_o time_n from_o the_o text_n more_o especial_o to_o conform_v to_o as_o we_o desire_v that_o ourselves_o may_v be_v hide_v and_o secure_v in_o the_o day_n of_o god_n anger_n that_o we_o may_v be_v keep_v and_o preserve_v from_o destruction_n it_o behoove_v we_o secret_o to_o lay_v to_o heart_n both_o our_o own_o and_o other_o contempt_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o ministry_n gross_a ingratitude_n and_o hypocrisy_n and_o which_o be_v the_o height_n of_o all_o a_o impudence_n and_o shamelesness_n in_o sin_n a_o dare_a of_o god_n to_o his_o very_a face_n and_z in_o a_o manner_n bid_v he_o to_o do_v his_o worst_a as_o not_o care_v for_o it_o never_o be_v more_o wickedness_n in_o england_n than_o have_v be_v in_o these_o in_o jer._n 5.8_o and_o these_o thing_n not_o only_o not_o lament_v but_o rather_o rejoice_v in_o and_o make_v a_o matter_n of_o saughter_n and_o merriment_n than_o any_o thing_n else_o as_o if_o man_n so_o the_o wise_a man_n be_v not_o always_o the_o best_a christian_n and_o as_o many_o which_o be_v famous_a for_o learning_n yet_o they_o be_v not_o always_o famous_a for_o prudence_n and_o discretion_n and_o practical_a wisdom_n but_o do_v many_o time_n exceed_o fail_v and_o miscarry_v here_o so_o many_o which_o be_v famous_a for_o wisdom_n and_o prudence_n in_o a_o way_n of_o the_o world_n yet_o be_v not_o always_o wise_a to_o salvation_n as_o i_o have_v former_o show_v unto_o you_o these_o greek_n as_o wise_a as_o they_o be_v in_o worldly_a matter_n yet_o they_o be_v not_o so_o in_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n but_o rather_o the_o contrary_n nay_o further_o they_o be_v here_o by_o this_o mean_n occasional_o set_v further_o off_o from_o it_o christ_n crucify_v be_v foolishness_n to_o they_o and_o their_o wit_n make_v they_o to_o despise_v that_o mean_n which_o shall_v save_v their_o soul_n well_o let_v we_o therefore_o for_o our_o part_n take_v heed_n of_o be_v any_o way_n guilty_a in_o this_o respect_n and_o let_v i_o again_o renew_v that_o counsel_n which_o i_o have_v before_o found_v upon_o this_o scripture_n to_o pray_v to_o god_n to_o sanctify_v our_o reason_n have_v be_v bear_v than_o to_o die_v in_o such_o a_o temper_n as_o this_o be_v how_o much_o better_a a_o great_a deal_n be_v it_o to_o have_v be_v bear_v a_o idiot_n or_o natural_a fool_n than_o to_o have_v wit_n and_o part_n and_o learning_n and_o wisdom_n upon_o those_o term_n and_o condition_n so_o as_o to_o count_v the_o gospel_n itself_o foolishness_n second_o let_v we_o hence_o also_o learn_v to_o admire_v the_o wisdom_n and_o power_n of_o god_n who_o by_o that_o mean_n which_o the_o world_n accunt_v foolishness_n be_v please_v to_o compass_v the_o salvation_n of_o the_o world_n and_o thus_o now_o i_o have_v do_v with_o the_o entertainment_n of_o the_o gospel_n in_o the_o first_o sense_n as_o a_o doctrine_n of_o offence_n and_o that_o in_o two_o particular_n unto_o the_o jew_n a_o stumbling-block_n and_o unto_o the_o greek_n foolishness_n now_o it_o follow_v as_o a_o doctrine_n of_o success_n in_o as_o many_o more_o in_o verse_n 24._o but_o unto_o they_o which_o be_v know_v the_o better_a how_o to_o dispose_v his_o pain_n and_o labour_n for_o time_n to_o come_v and_o supply_v those_o thing_n which_o be_v defective_a and_o this_o be_v that_o which_o we_o may_v here_o observe_v and_o take_v notice_n of_o in_o the_o apostle_n paul_n he_o do_v not_o content_v himself_o with_o this_o to_o preach_v christ_n crucify_v and_o so_o to_o pitch_v upon_o sound_a doctrine_n and_o instruction_n but_o he_o observe_v the_o effect_n of_o this_o doctrine_n and_o the_o various_a entertainment_n of_o his_o preach_v by_o those_o person_n which_o it_o be_v tender_v unto_o whereof_o this_o be_v the_o result_n and_o the_o account_n that_o to_o some_o it_o be_v a_o doctrine_n of_o offence_n and_o reprobation_n to_o other_o of_o success_n and_o acceptance_n the_o former_a of_o these_o we_o have_v already_o dispatch_v in_o the_o 23_o verse_n of_o this_o chapter_n we_o come_v now_o with_o god_n assistance_n to_o the_o latter_a in_o the_o 24_o verse_n here_o before_o we_o but_o unto_o they_o which_o be_v call_v both_o jew_n and_o greek_n etc._n etc._n in_o this_o verse_n we_o have_v declare_v unto_o we_o the_o entertainment_n of_o the_o doctrine_n of_o christ_n crucify_v as_o a_o doctrine_n of_o success_n and_o such_o as_o take_v effect_n upon_o the_o heart_n of_o those_o to_o who_o it_o be_v bring_v but_o unto_o they_o which_o be_v call_v etc._n etc._n where_o again_o as_o in_o the_o former_a we_o shall_v observe_v somewhat_o in_o general_n and_o thence_o proceed_v to_o the_o particular_a point_n which_o lie_v here_o before_o we_o for_o the_o general_a therefore_o first_o this_o that_o god_n will_v have_v always_o some_o or_o other_o in_o the_o world_n which_o shall_v embrace_v and_o bear_v witness_n to_o his_o truth_n thus_o here_o in_o the_o text_n the_o preach_a of_o christ_n crucify_v to_o the_o jew_n that_o be_v to_o a_o great_a many_o among_o they_o it_o be_v no_o better_a than_o a_o stumbling-block_n and_o to_o the_o gentile_n that_o be_v to_o a_o great_a number_n of_o they_o it_o be_v no_o better_a than_o foolishness_n but_o to_o those_o which_o be_v call_v that_o be_v to_o a_o certain_a remnant_n in_o either_o it_o be_v the_o power_n and_o wisdom_n of_o god_n himself_o there_o be_v some_o which_o still_o give_v entertainment_n unto_o it_o some_o critic_n have_v be_v of_o opinion_n as_o if_o the_o apostle_n here_o in_o this_o place_n do_v allude_v to_o a_o paronomasia_n in_o the_o hebrew_n language_n and_o that_o as_o thus_o the_o cross_n to_o the_o jew_n be_v micshal_n which_o signify_v a_o stumbling-block_n and_o to_o the_o greek_n be_v micsal_n which_o signify_v foolishness_n but_o to_o the_o call_v and_o believer_n among_o both_o it_o be_v sekel_n which_o signify_v understanding_n i_o do_v not_o insist_v much_o upon_o the_o urge_n of_o this_o notion_n but_o come_v rather_o to_o the_o thing_n itself_o where_o i_o say_v we_o may_v observe_v thus_o much_o that_o god_n will_v always_o so_o ordain_v it_o in_o his_o providence_n that_o some_o or_o other_o shall_v entertain_v his_o word_n and_o gospel_n where_o it_o be_v dispense_v and_o preach_v unto_o they_o thus_o we_o shall_v find_v it_o to_o have_v be_v wherever_o the_o apostle_n themselves_o come_v there_o be_v a_o certain_a number_n which_o embrace_v their_o ministry_n and_o give_v heed_n and_o regard_n to_o the_o doctrine_n which_o be_v deliver_v by_o they_o this_o god_n will_v have_v to_o be_v upon_o divers_a consideration_n first_o for_o the_o accomplishment_n of_o the_o number_n of_o his_o own_o elect_a god_n providence_n be_v subservient_fw-fr to_o his_o decree_n and_o that_o which_o he_o do_v in_o the_o world_n it_o be_v very_o suitable_a to_o his_o eternal_a purpose_n concern_v the_o final_a condition_n
