all_o which_o since_o i_o have_v i_o hope_v clear_o and_o full_o prove_v that_o which_o remain_v be_v to_o excite_v you_o to_o and_o direct_v you_o in_o the_o practice_n of_o this_o duty_n first_o then_o see_v here_o the_o excellency_n of_o the_o christian_a religion_n in_o general_n it_o require_v nothing_o at_o our_o hand_n but_o what_o tend_v to_o the_o improve_n of_o our_o nature_n into_o a_o absolute_a perfection_n all_o its_o law_n be_v wholesome_a and_o good_a and_o such_o as_o a_o wise_a man_n will_v choose_v to_o be_v guide_v by_o deut._n 4.6_o moses_n tell_v the_o child_n of_o israel_n that_o the_o observation_n of_o those_o law_n that_o he_o teach_v they_o will_v be_v their_o wisdom_n and_o their_o understanding_n in_o the_o sight_n of_o the_o nation_n who_o will_v be_v ready_a to_o give_v this_o character_n of_o they_o that_o they_o be_v above_o all_o other_o a_o wise_a and_o understand_a people_n and_o if_o the_o law_n of_o god_n be_v so_o excellent_a then_o what_o be_v it_o now_o since_o it_o have_v be_v improve_v by_o the_o gospel_n and_o illustrate_v by_o our_o saviour_n admirable_a exposition_n upon_o on_o it_o in_o the_o mount_n certain_o there_o be_v nothing_o in_o the_o world_n more_o sweet_a and_o take_v nothing_o that_o come_v so_o near_o the_o reason_n and_o the_o interest_n of_o mankind_n nay_o even_o the_o severe_a duty_n of_o it_o which_o seem_v the_o most_o contrary_a to_o our_o natural_a temper_n and_o constitution_n such_o as_o be_v meekness_n and_o humility_n repentance_n and_o self-denial_n mortification_n of_o our_o lust_n and_o passion_n and_o the_o like_a yet_o even_o this_o if_o we_o look_v well_o into_o they_o will_v appear_v not_o only_o reasonable_a in_o themselves_o but_o upon_o several_a account_n very_o much_o for_o our_o interest_n and_o advantage_n tend_v all_o along_o to_o the_o perfect_a quiet_a and_o settlement_n of_o our_o mind_n here_o and_o to_o our_o everlasting_a happiness_n and_o peace_n hereafter_o and_o as_o for_o that_o peculiar_a law_n of_o christianity_n which_o forbid_v revenge_n and_o command_v we_o to_o love_v our_o enemy_n and_o to_o forgive_v injury_n though_o it_o may_v seem_v harsh_a and_o grievous_a at_o the_o first_o yet_o no_o man_n can_v think_v it_o so_o that_o compare_v the_o restless_a torment_n and_o continual_a slavery_n of_o a_o malicious_a and_o revengeful_a spirit_n with_o the_o delight_n and_o sweetness_n of_o love_n and_o the_o glorious_a victory_n of_o overcome_v evil_a with_o good_a whereby_o a_o man_n conquer_v both_o his_o enemy_n and_o himself_o 2._o see_v here_o the_o necessity_n of_o these_o two_o excellent_a duty_n in_o particular_a viz._n peace_n and_o holiness_n 1._o for_o that_o of_o peace_n which_o the_o apostle_n require_v shall_v be_v universal_a follow_v peace_n with_o all_o man_n which_o precept_n of_o he_o do_v very_o well_o agree_v with_o the_o new_a testament_n notion_n of_o a_o brother_n which_o be_v indeed_o every_o man_n in_o the_o world_n as_o appear_v from_o the_o parable_n of_o the_o man_n that_o fall_v among_o thief_n whereby_o not_o only_o our_o kindred_n and_o acquaintance_n but_o even_o stranger_n and_o our_o very_a enemy_n too_o be_v bring_v into_o that_o relation_n upon_o which_o account_n this_o become_v as_o necessary_a a_o duty_n as_o it_o be_v a_o excellent_a grace_n and_o commend_v we_o unto_o god_n beyond_o all_o other_o duty_n of_o religion_n nay_o it_o be_v that_o which_o give_v be_v to_o religion_n itself_o and_o be_v the_o very_a life_n and_o soul_n of_o all_o true_a devotion_n for_o indeed_o what_o be_v christianity_n itself_o but_o the_o high_a demonstration_n of_o the_o great_a love_n that_o ever_o be_v and_o why_o be_v it_o so_o clear_o reveal_v unto_o we_o but_o only_o to_o excite_v we_o to_o the_o like_a practice_n one_o towards_o another_o and_o therefore_o at_o the_o last_o day_n this_o be_v the_o main_a thing_n that_o we_o shall_v be_v accountable_a for_o so_o that_o if_o there_o be_v any_o thing_n more_o necessary_a than_o other_o in_o order_n to_o the_o obtain_n of_o everlasting_a salvation_n it_o must_v certain_o be_v this_o hatred_n and_o malice_n be_v of_o all_o other_o thing_n the_o most_o odious_a in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n as_o be_v so_o direct_o contrary_a to_o the_o daily_a method_n of_o his_o providence_n yea_o to_o his_o very_a nature_n and_o command_n tear_v in_o piece_n not_o only_o his_o seamless_a coat_n but_o his_o body_n and_o render_v frustrate_v the_o very_a expense_n of_o his_o blood_n in_o so_o much_o that_o he_o will_v soon_o pass_v by_o all_o our_o other_o immortality_n than_o this_o which_o therefore_o that_o we_o may_v avoid_v there_o be_v three_o thing_n which_o if_o they_o be_v reduce_v into_o our_o practice_n will_v very_o much_o contribute_v to_o our_o peace_n 1._o bear_v with_o one_o another_o infirmity_n 2._o deal_v by_o other_o as_o we_o will_v have_v other_o deal_v by_o we_o 3._o a_o sincere_a and_o earnest_a endeavour_n after_o holiness_n all_o which_o if_o they_o be_v but_o lay_v to_o heart_n and_o practise_v will_v certain_o restore_v our_o peace_n as_o at_o the_o first_o and_o our_o prosperity_n as_o at_o the_o beginning_n 1._o bear_v with_o one_o another_o infirmity_n though_o it_o be_v the_o design_n of_o the_o christian_a religion_n to_o make_v we_o holy_a than_o other_o and_o to_o improve_v our_o mind_n and_o practice_n beyond_o the_o common_a rate_n of_o man_n yet_o it_o be_v never_o intend_v to_o make_v we_o therefore_o keep_v our_o distance_n and_o to_o stand_v off_o from_o all_o that_o be_v not_o arrive_v to_o as_o high_a a_o pitch_n as_o ourselves_o no_o the_o high_a the_o true_a christian_a be_v in_o god_n account_n the_o low_a he_o be_v always_o in_o his_o own_o the_o more_o experience_n he_o have_v have_v of_o god_n goodness_n unto_o he_o the_o more_o pitiful_a and_o courteous_a he_o be_v to_o other_o it_o be_v this_o that_o make_v st._n paul_n become_v all_o thing_n to_o all_o man_n that_o be_v so_o far_o to_o condescend_v to_o the_o weakness_n but_o not_o the_o wickedness_n of_o any_o as_o to_o deny_v himself_o that_o christian_a liberty_n which_o otherwise_o he_o may_v have_v take_v which_o be_v doutless_a that_o holy_a guile_n wherewith_o he_o catch_v so_o many_o upon_o which_o account_n he_o recommend_v the_o same_o practice_n unto_o we_o rom._n 15.1_o we_o then_o that_o be_v strong_a aught_o to_o bear_v the_o infirmity_n of_o the_o weak_a and_o not_o to_o please_v ourselves_o which_o advice_n of_o he_o be_v as_o necessary_a as_o it_o be_v excellent_a and_o will_v well_o become_v all_o christian_n in_o general_a but_o more_o especial_o the_o minister_n of_o the_o gospel_n who_o shall_v be_v man_n of_o gentle_a and_o peaceable_a disposition_n rather_o compose_v difference_n than_o foment_v of_o they_o therefore_o say_v the_o apostle_n 2_o tim._n 2.24_o 25._o the_o servant_n of_o the_o lord_n must_v not_o strive_v that_o so_o incline_v they_o but_o certain_o must_v have_v this_o principle_n in_o they_o that_o they_o hate_v to_o be_v force_v though_o it_o be_v even_o to_o goodness_n and_o virtue_n and_o will_v discard_v piety_n itself_o and_o heaven_n too_o rather_o than_o be_v threaten_v thither_o whereas_o on_o the_o other_o hand_n the_o most_o refractory_a and_o stubborn_a spirit_n who_o force_n can_v prevail_v upon_o will_v be_v supple_a and_o pliant_a when_o reproof_n and_o zeal_n come_v clothe_v with_o love_n when_o they_o see_v tear_n shed_v for_o they_o and_o their_o own_o interest_n more_o look_v after_o by_o other_o than_o themselves_o when_o they_o see_v they_o be_v rather_o pity_v than_o hate_v and_o be_v notwithstanding_o all_o their_o obstinacy_n and_o wilfulness_n woo_v both_o by_o god_n and_o man_n to_o accept_v of_o happiness_n and_o a_o heaven_n beside_o let_v we_o remember_v the_o best_a of_o man_n whilst_o they_o be_v here_o on_o earth_n need_v a_o great_a many_o grain_n of_o allowance_n the_o education_n temper_n and_o constitution_n of_o man_n be_v to_o be_v consider_v from_o whence_o the_o great_a part_n both_o of_o
rail_v at_o and_o affront_v to_o be_v cheat_v and_o cozen_v to_o be_v rob_v of_o our_o good_a name_n and_o the_o comfort_n of_o our_o life_n will_v we_o be_v content_v to_o be_v drive_v up_o and_o down_o from_o post_n to_o pillar_n and_o to_o have_v all_o advantage_n take_v against_o we_o no_o certain_o we_o will_v not_o let_v we_o not_o then_o act_v any_o long_o so_o direct_o contrary_a to_o the_o reason_n of_o mankind_n and_o to_o the_o design_n of_o the_o gospel_n too_o lest_o hereby_o we_o be_v esteem_v the_o common_a pest_n of_o the_o world_n enemy_n both_o to_o god_n and_o man_n too_o &_o so_o at_o last_o find_v from_o the_o judge_n of_o all_o man_n the_o same_o measure_n that_o we_o have_v meet_v out_o to_o other_o which_o be_v to_o be_v proceed_v against_o with_o all_o the_o violence_n and_o severity_n of_o justice_n and_o wrath_n but_o 3._o a_o sincere_a and_o earnest_a endeavour_n after_o holiness_n will_v very_o much_o contribute_v unto_o our_o peace_n whilst_o man_n continue_v in_o that_o happy_a state_n in_o which_o he_o be_v create_v there_o be_v a_o perfect_a peace_n in_o paradise_n and_o this_o flow_v from_o that_o perfect_a innocence_n of_o his_o life_n and_o nature_n before_o his_o fall_n but_o as_o soon_o as_o ever_o he_o have_v eat_v of_o the_o forbid_v fruit_n sin_n the_o great_a makebate_n of_o the_o world_n set_v he_o at_o variance_n both_o with_o god_n and_o himself_o sow_v division_n between_o the_o man_n and_o his_o wife_n make_v mortal_a enemy_n of_o natural_a brother_n and_o teach_v the_o whole_a greation_n rebellion_n diotrephes_n that_o disturb_v the_o church_n of_o asia_n and_o if_o we_o will_v but_o lay_v our_o hand_n upon_o our_o heart_n we_o shall_v find_v that_o it_o be_v one_o lust_n or_o another_o at_o the_o bottom_n that_o arm_n we_o so_o unnatural_o against_o one_o another_o while_o there_o be_v envy_v &_o strife_n &_o division_n among_o you_o say_v the_o apostle_n 1_o cor._n 3.3_o be_v you_o not_o carnal_a and_o walk_v as_o man_n the_o man_n all_o the_o while_n get_v the_o better_a of_o the_o christian_a whereas_o be_v we_o but_o holy_a and_o upright_a just_a and_o good_a we_o shall_v be_v more_o moderate_a and_o calm_a do_v we_o in_o our_o heart_n true_o fear_v god_n we_o shall_v by_o necessary_a consequence_n also_o love_v our_o brethren_n be_v we_o true_o sensible_a of_o his_o love_n and_o kindness_n unto_o we_o it_o will_v make_v we_o more_o charitable_a and_o love_a unto_o other_o sure_o i_o be_o if_o we_o will_v but_o look_v near_o home_n the_o best_a of_o we_o may_v to_o thy_o brother_n let_v i_o pull_v out_o the_o mote_n out_o of_o thy_o eye_n when_o behold_v a_o beam_n be_v in_o thy_o own_o eye_n thou_o hypocrite_n first_o cast_v out_o the_o beam_n out_o of_o can_v be_v a_o more_o powerful_a motive_n in_o the_o world_n whoever_o consider_v the_o nature_n of_o the_o christian_a religion_n how_o suitable_a all_o the_o precept_n of_o it_o be_v to_o the_o reason_n and_o interest_n of_o man_n kind_a what_o excellent_a promise_v it_o make_v to_o excite_v our_o hope_n in_o case_n of_o obedience_n what_o amaze_a threat_n it_o lay_v down_o to_o a_o waken_v our_o fear_n in_o case_n of_o disobedience_n whoever_o i_o say_v consider_v these_o thing_n can_v but_o conclude_v it_o the_o most_o excellent_a religion_n in_o the_o world_n and_o such_o as_o no_o man_n in_o his_o wit_n but_o will_v ready_o embrace_v and_o practise_v and_o yet_o if_o we_o do_v but_o look_v into_o the_o life_n and_o conversation_n of_o those_o that_o have_v embrace_v it_o we_o shall_v find_v the_o generality_n of_o they_o as_o great_a stranger_n to_o the_o practice_n of_o it_o as_o those_o that_o never_o hear_v of_o it_o what_o atheism_n and_o profaneness_n what_o curse_v and_o swear_v what_o lie_v and_o perjury_n what_o drunkenness_n and_o uncleanness_n in_o short_a what_o plenty_n of_o all_o manner_n of_o wickedness_n be_v there_o every_o where_o to_o be_v see_v even_o among_o those_o that_o call_v themselves_o christian_n as_o if_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n that_o bring_v salvation_n have_v never_o appear_v or_o rather_o as_o if_o the_o appearance_n of_o it_o be_v only_o to_o teach_v we_o not_o to_o deny_v but_o to_o own_o and_o practise_v all_o ungodliness_n and_o worldly_a lust_n for_o certain_o have_v some_o among_o we_o a_o dispensation_n from_o heaven_n and_o leave_v to_o be_v as_o bad_a as_o they_o will_v they_o can_v not_o well_o be_v much_o worse_a than_o they_o be_v and_o yet_o ask_v these_o person_n in_o their_o more_o serious_a interval_n what_o they_o think_v of_o god_n and_o of_o another_o world_n and_o their_o hope_n of_o happiness_n seem_v to_o be_v as_o strong_a as_o the_o best_a flatter_v themselves_o with_o i_o know_v not_o what_o presumptuous_a thought_n of_o god_n mercy_n as_o if_o he_o be_v oblige_v to_o bestow_v it_o upon_o they_o whenever_o they_o will_v vouchsafe_v to_o call_v for_o it_o or_o to_o accept_v of_o it_o but_o let_v these_o man_n know_v the_o christian_a religion_n give_v no_o encouragement_n to_o any_o such_o flatter_a hope_n and_o corrupt_a practice_n it_o be_v true_a it_o promise_v eternal_a life_n but_o its_o only_a unto_o they_o that_o believe_v it_o offer_v heaven_n and_o happiness_n but_o its_o only_a unto_o they_o that_o practice_n holiness_n it_o assure_v of_o peace_n and_o comfort_n in_o another_o life_n but_o then_o its_o only_a unto_o they_o that_o follow_v peace_n and_o righteousness_n in_o this_o since_o without_o these_o the_o apostle_n assure_v we_o no_o man_n shall_v see_v god_n shall_v ever_o behold_v his_o face_n with_o joy_n and_o comfort_n shall_v ever_o have_v the_o least_o place_n in_o his_o favour_n here_o or_o in_o his_o glory_n hereafter_o it_o be_v true_a in_o one_o sense_n the_o most_o wicked_a and_o ungodly_a who_o have_v neither_o peace_n nor_o holiness_n nor_o any_o other_o good_a quality_n beside_o shall_v see_v god_n but_o it_o shall_v be_v only_o to_o increase_v their_o misery_n and_o add_v unto_o their_o torment_n when_o they_o shall_v see_v god_n as_o the_o devil_n do_v with_o fear_n and_o horror_n and_o behold_v he_o as_o so_o far_o from_o pity_v and_o relieve_v of_o they_o that_o he_o will_v rather_o laugh_v at_o their_o calamity_n and_o mock_v when_o their_o fear_n come_v which_o sole_a consideration_n be_v enough_o one_o will_v think_v to_o calm_v the_o most_o furious_a and_o revengful_a to_o sweeten_v the_o most_o sour_a and_o bitter_a disposition_n to_o curb_v and_o restrain_v the_o utmost_a fury_n of_o all_o our_o lust_n for_o i_o be_o much_o mistake_v if_o it_o will_v not_o daunt_v the_o proud_a sinner_n that_o ever_o breathe_v to_o look_v upon_o death_n and_o to_o see_v nothing_o but_o hell_n beyond_o it_o to_o behold_v the_o great_a god_n of_o heaven_n and_o earth_n clothe_v in_o all_o the_o robe_n of_o fury_n and_o vengeance_n to_o behold_v he_o unto_o other_o a_o merciful_a father_n and_o compassionate_a redeemer_n but_o unto_o himself_o a_o revengeful_a judge_n
to_o his_o prince_n when_o his_o daily_a practice_n be_v to_o break_v all_o the_o law_n that_o ever_o he_o make_v and_o therefore_o hence_o be_v it_o that_o our_o saviour_n say_v you_o be_v my_o friend_n if_o you_o do_v whatsoever_o i_o command_v you_o a_o readiness_n and_o willingness_n to_o perform_v another_o will_n and_o pleasure_n be_v the_o true_a sign_n of_o love_n and_o friendship_n that_o can_v be_v so_o that_o the_o apostle_n may_v very_o well_o charge_v that_o man_n with_o a_o untruth_n who_o pretend_v to_o love_n god_n and_o yet_o take_v no_o care_n to_o oblige_v and_o suppose_v by_o this_o time_n we_o may_v from_o hence_o conclude_v that_o where_o there_o be_v no_o true_a love_n to_o our_o brother_n there_o can_v be_v no_o true_a religion_n towards_o god_n in_o the_o prosecution_n of_o which_o i_o shall_v endeavour_v 1._o to_o prove_v that_o it_o be_v so_o 2._o show_v you_o some_o hindrance_n of_o our_o love_n to_o our_o brethren_n and_o so_o consequent_o of_o our_o religion_n towards_o god_n 3._o i_o shall_v show_v you_o how_o we_o ought_v to_o love_v our_o brethren_n and_o 4._o draw_v a_o inference_n or_o two_o by_o way_n of_o application_n 1._o i_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o prove_v the_o proposition_n and_o that_o 1._o from_o the_o natural_a dependence_n of_o all_o religion_n upon_o love_n 2._o from_o the_o pernicious_a nature_n of_o envy_n and_o hatred_n which_o be_v destructive_a to_o all_o religion_n and_o 3._o from_o the_o good_a providence_n of_o god_n who_o have_v make_v the_o love_n of_o our_o brother_n to_o be_v the_o mark_n and_o sign_n of_o our_o love_n to_o he_o 1._o from_o the_o natural_a dependence_n of_o all_o religion_n upon_o love_n if_o we_o do_v but_o consider_v the_o nature_n of_o religion_n we_o shall_v find_v it_o so_o necessary_o build_v upon_o the_o foundation_n of_o love_n that_o it_o be_v impossible_a for_o it_o to_o stand_v upon_o any_o other_o basis_n nay_o it_o be_v so_o natural_a to_o it_o that_o all_o pretence_n whatsoever_o without_o it_o will_v soon_o vanish_v into_o air_n and_o nothing_o for_o as_o that_o which_o be_v not_o of_o god_n can_v never_o stand_v so_o that_o religion_n which_o do_v not_o abound_v in_o love_n can_v never_o be_v from_o god_n and_o so_o can_v neither_o assure_v its_o present_a truth_n nor_o its_o long_a continuance_n in_o that_o god_n be_v love_n and_o that_o which_o come_v natural_o from_o he_o as_o all_o true_a religion_n do_v must_v partake_v of_o his_o nature_n and_o abide_v in_o he_o and_o there_o be_v no_o dwell_n in_o god_n without_o a_o dwell_n in_o love_n and_o therefore_o our_o saviour_n christ_n answer_v that_o subtle_a question_n of_o the_o lawyer_n touch_v the_o first_o and_o great_a commandment_n make_v this_o one_o duty_n of_o love_n to_o be_v the_o fulfil_n of_o the_o whole_a law_n â—0_n math._n 20._o â—0_n on_o these_o two_o commandment_n viz._n love_n to_o god_n and_o to_o our_o neighbour_n hang_v all_o the_o law_n and_o the_o strive_v to_o make_v man_n perfect_o happy_a so_o the_o other_o do_v all_o it_o can_v to_o make_v they_o eternal_o miserable_a and_o fight_n neither_o with_o small_a nor_o great_a but_o with_o the_o all_o of_o man_n felicity_n for_o by_o mix_v and_o twine_v itself_o into_o our_o heart_n it_o quite_o stifle_v our_o religion_n and_o do_v as_o the_o old_a serpent_n do_v by_o our_o first_o parent_n betray_v we_o even_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o paradise_n for_o whilst_o we_o pretend_v to_o be_v religious_a and_o do_v not_o bridle_v this_o unruly_a passion_n our_o religion_n be_v not_o only_o vain_a but_o will_v be_v our_o ruin_n too_o there_o be_v no_o great_a affront_n to_o god_n in_o the_o world_n nor_o any_o thing_n more_o destructive_a to_o ourselves_o than_o thus_o presumptuous_o to_o sin_n both_o against_o he_o and_o our_o own_o soul_n by_o present_v ourselves_o before_o he_o so_o direct_o contrary_a to_o his_o nature_n and_o command_n for_o he_o have_v take_v such_o care_n that_o his_o worship_n shall_v be_v free_a from_o all_o such_o impure_a mixture_n of_o hatred_n and_o malice_n that_o he_o will_v rather_o for_o a_o time_n dispense_v with_o his_o worship_n itself_o entertainment_n but_o be_v real_o full_a and_o well_o like_n and_o have_v this_o advantage_n too_o beyond_o the_o other_o that_o he_o be_v make_v happy_a with_o less_o trouble_n and_o at_o a_o easy_a rate_n than_o the_o other_o be_v make_v miserable_a the_o one_o must_v pass_v through_o a_o cruel_a purgatory_n of_o malice_n and_o wickedness_n before_o he_o can_v get_v to_o hell_n whilst_o the_o other_o in_o his_o search_n after_o heaven_n find_v in_o the_o tranquillity_n of_o his_o mind_n a_o pleasant_a paradise_n all_o the_o way_n three_o the_o proposition_n will_v more_o full_o appear_v to_o be_v true_a if_o we_o consider_v the_o nature_n of_o these_o excellent_a duty_n in_o themselves_o it_o be_v the_o privilege_n which_o the_o true_a christian_a only_o enjoy_v above_o all_o other_o person_n in_o the_o world_n that_o those_o thing_n that_o be_v his_o duty_n be_v both_o his_o interest_n and_o his_o glory_n too_o and_o at_o once_o contribute_v both_o to_o his_o present_a &_o future_a welfare_n what_o therefore_o be_v all_o the_o duty_n of_o religion_n enjoin_v he_o here_o on_o earth_n but_o so_o many_o accomplishment_n to_o make_v he_o fit_a for_o heaven_n what_o be_v all_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o gospel_n but_o so_o many_o jewel_n to_o enrich_v and_o beautify_v a_o crown_n of_o glory_n why_o be_v he_o bid_v to_o deny_v ungodliness_n and_o worldly_a lust_n and_o to_o live_v righteous_o and_o sober_o and_o godly_a in_o this_o present_a evil_a world_n but_o only_o that_o thereby_o he_o may_v be_v capable_a of_o a_o inheritance_n among_o those_o that_o be_v thus_o sanctify_v to_o what_o end_n be_v we_o require_v to_o be_v renew_a in_o the_o spirit_n of_o our_o mind_n after_o the_o image_n of_o he_o that_o create_v we_o but_o that_o by_o our_o be_v thus_o like_o he_o we_o may_v be_v able_a to_o see_v he_o as_o he_o be_v and_o to_o enjoy_v he_o too_o and_o indeed_o what_o be_v that_o happiness_n which_o the_o saint_n enjoy_v in_o heaven_n but_o only_o a_o privilege_n of_o partake_v of_o the_o divine_a nature_n what_o else_o be_v glory_n but_o only_o the_o high_a perfection_n of_o grace_n and_o therefore_o if_o we_o do_v but_o consider_v the_o nature_n and_o employment_n of_o just_a man_n make_v perfect_a in_o heaven_n we_o shall_v find_v they_o so_o exact_o transform_v into_o the_o image_n of_o god_n as_o if_o their_o converse_n with_o and_o resemblance_n unto_o he_o make_v up_o the_o happiness_n and_o perfection_n of_o that_o place_n it_o be_v this_o that_o make_v the_o garden_n of_o eden_n a_o pleasant_a paradise_n unto_o adam_n and_o it_o be_v this_o that_o make_v heaven_n itself_o to_o be_v heaven_n to_o the_o saint_n whilst_o they_o be_v here_o on_o earth_n their_o pure_a gold_n have_v some_o dross_n but_o there_o it_o be_v thorough_o refine_v and_o purify_v from_o all_o here_o the_o exact_a holiness_n have_v somewhat_o in_o it_o that_o require_v a_o pardon_n but_o there_o it_o be_v so_o perfect_a that_o it_o want_v none_o which_o innocent_a and_o therefore_o happy_a condition_n must_v necessary_o produce_v a_o everlasting_a peace_n and_o that_o not_o only_o with_o god_n and_o their_o own_o conscience_n but_o with_o all_o the_o world_n beside_o the_o chief_a part_n of_o our_o religion_n consist_v in_o act_n of_o piety_n unto_o god_n and_o charity_n unto_o man_n nay_o such_o stress_n have_v the_o scripture_n lay_v upon_o the_o latter_a as_o without_o it_o whole_o to_o exclude_v the_o former_a by_o this_o say_v our_o saviour_n john_n 13.35_o shall_v all_o man_n know_v that_o you_o be_v my_o disciple_n if_o you_o love_v one_o another_o and_o st._n john_n tell_v we_o express_o 1_o john_n 4.20_o that_o if_o a_o man_n say_v i_o love_v god_n and_o hate_v his_o brother_n he_o be_v a_o lyar._n now_o this_o excellent_a grace_n which_o be_v so_o much_o our_o duty_n here_o make_v up_o the_o chief_a part_n of_o our_o happiness_n hereafter_o and_o do_v the_o most_o of_o any_o thing_n else_o improve_v our_o nature_n into_o a_o absolute_a perfection_n and_o therefore_o that_o which_o be_v in_o st._n luke_n phrase_n style_v mercy_n be_v in_o st._n mathews_n style_v perfection_n in_o the_o one_o it_o be_v be_v you_o merciful_a even_o as_o your_o heavenly_a father_n be_v merciful_a in_o the_o other_o it_o be_v be_v you_o perfect_a even_o as_o your_o father_n which_o be_v in_o heaven_n be_v perfect_a as_o may_v be_v see_v by_o compare_v math._n 5.48_o with_o luke_n 6.36_o thereby_o teach_v we_o that_o we_o be_v make_v perfect_a only_o in_o love_n and_o indeed_o if_o we_o do_v but_o consider_v what_o the_o employment_n of_o the_o saint_n in_o heaven_n be_v we_o shall_v find_v it_o to_o consist_v whole_o in_o the_o high_a act_n of_o love_n that_o can_v be_v in_o which_o they_o be_v continual_o exercise_v for_o there_o they_o not_o only_o contemplate_v the_o excellency_n of_o their_o maker_n and_o praise_n and_o magnify_v he_o but_o also_o show_v some_o act_n of_o love_n unto_o their_o fellow-creature_n here_o below_o for_o though_o they_o do_v not_o become_v mediator_n and_o intercessor_n for_o they_o as_o some_o fond_o dream_n yet_o they_o rejoice_v to_o meet_v they_o in_o heaven_n and_o will_v glad_o welcome_v their_o great_a enemy_n thither_o for_o if_o there_o be_v joy_n in_o heaven_n over_o one_o sinner_n that_o repent_v that_o joy_n be_v double_v when_o that_o penitence_n be_v crown_v with_o perseverance_n and_o eternal_a life_n so_o that_o it_o be_v not_o only_a religion_n but_o the_o end_n of_o it_o too_o it_o be_v the_o way_n that_o lead_v to_o everlasting_a life_n and_o it_o be_v that_o life_n itself_o all_o which_o consider_v our_o apostle_n may_v well_o press_v peace_n and_o holiness_n upon_o we_o above_o all_o other_o thing_n in_o the_o world_n for_o if_o these_o be_v the_o thing_n that_o the_o near_a resemble_v the_o nature_n of_o god_n and_o by_o consequence_n best_o please_v he_o if_o these_o be_v the_o thing_n that_o not_o only_o tend_v to_o but_o make_v up_o and_o complete_a our_o happiness_n what_o can_v be_v more_o necessary_a for_o we_o to_o believe_v and_o practice_n and_o therefore_o certain_o we_o must_v needs_o do_v ourselves_o a_o unspeakable_a deal_n of_o mischief_n not_o to_o follow_v
mercy_n rather_o than_o sacrifice_n at_o our_o hand_n for_o if_o the_o gift_n when_o bring_v to_o the_o altar_n must_v rather_o be_v lest_o there_o then_o offer_v up_o sure_o there_o can_v be_v no_o acceptance_n or_o reconciliation_n with_o god_n unless_o we_o be_v also_o reconcile_v unto_o our_o brother_n because_o that_o this_o must_v be_v do_v before_o the_o other_o can_v be_v begin_v how_o proportion_n the_o absoluteness_n of_o that_o forgiveness_n which_o they_o beg_v of_o god_n unto_o that_o which_o they_o give_v to_o other_o and_o yet_o all_o that_o while_o be_v ready_a to_o do_v all_o the_o mischief_n they_o can_v unto_o they_o what_o be_v this_o but_o to_o beg_v of_o god_n to_o do_v his_o worst_a against_o they_o and_o to_o exercise_v the_o utmost_a of_o his_o power_n in_o their_o everlasting_a destruction_n and_o sure_a man_n in_o such_o a_o condition_n be_v very_o far_o from_o all_o religion_n for_o beside_o the_o destructive_a nature_n of_o envy_n and_o hatred_n unto_o all_o humane_a society_n which_o can_v no_o long_o stand_v where_o these_o reign_n than_o a_o house_n divide_v against_o itself_o can_v as_o may_v be_v see_v in_o many_o fatal_a instance_n lyar._n but_o 3._o the_o proposition_n will_v yet_o far_o appear_v to_o be_v true_a from_o the_o providence_n of_o god_n who_o have_v make_v the_o love_n of_o our_o brother_n to_o be_v the_o mark_n and_o sign_n of_o our_o love_n to_o he_o if_o we_o do_v but_o consider_v the_o nature_n of_o that_o relation_n which_o we_o stand_v in_o one_o towards_o another_o we_o shall_v easy_o perceive_v that_o this_o piece_n of_o god_n providence_n in_o make_v the_o love_n of_o our_o brother_n to_o be_v the_o mark_n and_o sign_n of_o our_o love_n to_o he_o be_v ground_v and_o bottom_v upon_o as_o great_a reason_n as_o any_o be_v in_o the_o world_n for_o we_o be_v all_o member_n of_o that_o mystical_a body_n whereof_o christ_n be_v the_o head_n now_o where_o there_o be_v no_o true_a love_n to_o the_o fellow-member_n there_o can_v be_v no_o true_a love_n to_o the_o head_n because_o in_o the_o same_o body_n the_o head_n and_o member_n share_v alike_o if_o therefore_o the_o member_n fall_v out_o and_o be_v at_o enmity_n one_o with_o another_o they_o can_v never_o agree_v and_o be_v at_o peace_n with_o the_o head_n beside_o there_o can_v be_v no_o other_o way_n of_o show_v our_o love_n to_o god_n than_o this_o for_o as_o our_o capacity_n be_v now_o all_o other_o be_v either_o above_o we_o or_o below_o we_o we_o can_v be_v say_v to_o love_n god_n proper_o and_o as_o he_o be_v because_o he_o be_v a_o spirit_n and_o invisible_a and_o so_o do_v infinite_o transcend_v our_o high_a conception_n of_o he_o and_o therefore_o that_o which_o we_o call_v love_n to_o he_o be_v not_o proper_o such_o but_o rather_o adoration_n and_o devotion_n and_o then_o see_v the_o divine_a nature_n be_v so_o far_o beyond_o the_o expression_n of_o our_o love_n we_o must_v look_v out_o some_o other_o way_n by_o which_o we_o may_v more_o clear_o evidence_n it_o and_o that_o must_v be_v by_o somewhat_o of_o our_o own_o nature_n and_o condition_n angel_n be_v therefore_o above_o we_o and_o all_o other_o creature_n be_v below_o we_o and_o not_o capable_a either_o of_o receive_v or_o return_v of_o our_o love_n so_o that_o there_o be_v nothing_o else_o that_o can_v be_v the_o object_n of_o it_o but_o our_o brethren_n or_o ourselves_o now_o self_n love_n be_v too_o narrow_a and_o scanty_a to_o have_v any_o thing_n of_o this_o divine_a quality_n in_o it_o which_o be_v of_o a_o more_o extensive_a and_o universal_a nature_n beside_o it_o be_v so_o far_o from_o testify_v of_o our_o love_n to_o god_n that_o it_o may_v as_o well_o be_v in_o a_o devil_n as_o a_o man_n as_o may_v be_v see_v in_o the_o case_n of_o dives_n who_o request_n to_o abraham_n of_o send_v lazarus_n to_o warn_v his_o brethren_n 16._o lukâ—_n 16._o do_v not_o proceed_v from_o any_o love_n to_o or_o care_n beside_o can_v there_o be_v a_o better_a way_n of_o show_v our_o love_n to_o god_n than_o this_o which_o he_o himself_o have_v teach_v we_o 3.16_o john_n 3.16_o and_o herein_o be_v the_o love_n of_o
