go_v in_o wi●h_n he_o to_o the_o marriage_n and_o the_o door_n be_v shut_v afterwards_o come_v also_o the_o other_o virgin_n say_v lord_n lord_n open_a to_o we_o but_o he_o answer_v and_o say_v very_o i_o say_v unto_o you_o i_o know_v you_o not_o five_o i_o observe_v that_o there_o be_v no_o such_o thing_n as_o work_n of_o super-erogation_n that_o no_o man_n can_v do_v more_o than_o needs_o and_o be_v his_o duty_n to_o do_v by_o way_n of_o preparation_n for_o another_o world_n for_o when_o the_o foolish_a virgin_n will_v have_v beg_v of_o the_o wise_a some_o oil_n for_o their_o lamp_n the_o wise_a answer_v not_o so_o lest_o there_o be_v not_o enough_o for_o we_o and_o you_o it_o be_v only_o the_o foolish_a virgin_n that_o have_v entertain_v this_o foolish_a conceit_n that_o there_o may_v be_v a_o overplus_n of_o grace_n and_o merit_n in_o other_o sufficient_a to_o supply_v their_o want_n but_o the_o wise_a know_v not_o of_o any_o they_o have_v to_o spare_v but_o suppose_v all_o that_o they_o have_v little_a enough_o to_o qualify_v they_o for_o the_o reward_n of_o eternal_a life_n not_o so_o say_v they_o {non-roman}_o {non-roman}_o {non-roman}_o {non-roman}_o {non-roman}_o lest_o at_o any_o time_n lest_o when_o there_o shall_v be_v need_n and_o occasion_n all_o that_o we_o have_v do_v or_o can_v do_v shall_v prove_v little_a enough_o for_o ourselves_o six_o and_o last_o i_o observe_v that_o if_o we_o can_v suppose_v any_o person_n to_o be_v so_o overgood_a as_o to_o have_v more_o grace_n and_o goodness_n than_o need_v to_o qualify_v they_o for_o the_o reward_n of_o eternal_a life_n yet_o there_o be_v no_o assign_v and_o transfer_v of_o this_o overplus_n of_o grace_n and_o virtue_n from_o one_o man_n to_o another_o for_o we_o see_v verse_n 9_o 10._o that_o all_o the_o way_n which_o they_o can_v think_v of_o of_o borrow_v or_o buy_v oil_n of_o other_o do_v all_o prone_a ineffectual_a because_o the_o thing_n be_v in_o its_o own_o nature_n impracticable_a that_o one_o sinner_n shall_v be_v in_o a_o condition_n to_o merit_n for_o another_o all_o these_o observation_n seem_v to_o have_v some_o fair_a and_o probable_a foundation_n in_o some_o part_n or_o other_o of_o this_o parable_n and_o most_o of_o they_o i_o be_o sure_a be_v agreeable_a to_o the_o main_a scope_n and_o intention_n of_o the_o whole_a i_o shall_v speak_v to_o they_o several_o and_o as_o brief_o as_o i_o can_v first_o i_o observe_v the_o charitable_a decorum_n which_o our_o b._n saviour_n keep_v in_o this_o as_o well_o as_o in_o the_o rest_n of_o his_o parable_n as_o if_o he_o will_v fain_o suppose_v and_o hope_v that_o among_o those_o who_o enjoy_v the_o gospel_n and_o make_v prof●ssion_n of_o it_o the_o number_n of_o those_o who_o make_v a_o firm_a and_o sincere_a profession_n of_o it_o and_o persevere_v in_o goodness_n to_o the_o end_n be_v equal_a to_o the_o number_n of_o those_o who_o do_v not_o make_v good_a their_o profession_n or_o who_o fall_v off_o from_o it_o i_o shall_v not_o be_v long_o upon_o this_o because_o i_o lie_v the_o least_o stress_n upon_o it_o of_o all_o the_o rest_n i_o shall_v only_o take_v notice_n that_o our_o b._n saviour_n in_o this_o parable_n represent_v the_o whole_a number_n of_o the_o professor_n of_o christianity_n by_o ten_o virgin_n the_o half_a of_o which_o the_o parable_n seem_v to_o suppose_v to_o have_v sincere_o embrace_v the_o christian_a profession_n and_o to_o have_v persevere_v therein_o to_o the_o last_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n shall_v be_v liken_v unto_o ten_o virgin_n which_o take_v their_o lamp_n and_o go_v forth_o to_o meet_v the_o bridegroom_n and_o five_o of_o they_o be_v wise_a and_o five_o be_v foolish_a and_o this_o decorum_n our_o b._n saviour_n seem_v careful_o to_o observe_v in_o his_o other_o parable_n as_o in_o the_o parable_n of_o the_o prodigal_n luke_n 15._o where_o for_o one_o son_n that_o leave_v his_o father_n and_o take_v riotous_a course_n there_o be_v another_o that_o stay_v always_o with_o he_o and_o continue_v constant_a to_o his_o duty_n and_o in_o the_o parable_n of_o the_o ten_o talent_n which_o immediate_o follow_v that_o of_o the_o ten_o virgin_n two_o be_v suppose_v to_o improve_v the_o talent_n commit_v to_o they_o for_o one_o that_o make_v no_o improvement_n of_o he_o he_o that_o have_v five_o talent_n commit_v to_o he_o make_v they_o five_o more_o and_o he_o that_o have_v two_o gain_v other_o two_o and_o only_o he_o that_o have_v but_o one_o talon_n hide_v it_o in_o the_o earth_n and_o make_v no_o improvement_n of_o it_o and_o in_o the_o parable_n which_o i_o be_o now_o upon_o the_o number_n of_o the_o professor_n of_o christianity_n who_o take_v care_n to_o fit_v and_o prepare_v themselves_o for_o the_o come_n of_o the_o bridegroom_n be_v suppose_v equal_a to_o the_o number_n of_o those_o who_o do_v not_o and_o whether_o this_o be_v particular_o intend_v in_o the_o parable_n or_o not_o it_o may_v however_o be_v thus_o far_o instructive_a to_o we_o that_o we_o shall_v be_v so_o far_o from_o lessen_v the_o number_n of_o true_a christian_n and_o from_o confine_v the_o church_n of_o christ_n within_o a_o narrow_a compass_n so_o as_o to_o exclude_v out_o of_o its_o communion_n the_o far_o great_a part_n of_o the_o professor_n of_o christianity_n that_o on_o the_o contrary_a we_o shall_v enlarge_v the_o kingdom_n of_o christ_n as_o much_o as_o we_o can_v and_o extend_v our_o charity_n to_o all_o church_n and_o christian_n of_o what_o denomination_n soever_o as_o far_o as_o regard_v to_o truth_n and_o to_o the_o foundation_n of_o the_o christian_a religion_n will_v permit_v we_o to_o believe_v and_o hope_v well_o of_o they_o and_o rather_o be_v content_v to_o err_v a_o little_a on_o the_o favourable_a and_o charitable_a part_n than_o to_o be_v mistake_v on_o the_o censorious_a and_o damn_v side_n and_o for_o this_o reason_n perhaps_o it_o be_v that_o our_o b._n saviour_n think_v fit_a to_o frame_v his_o parable_n with_o so_o remarkable_a a_o bias_n to_o the_o charitable_a side_n partly_o to_o instruct_v we_o to_o extend_v our_o charity_n towards_o all_o christian_a church_n and_o professor_n of_o the_o christian_a religion_n and_o our_o good_a hope_n concerning_o they_o as_o far_o as_o with_o reason_n we_o can_v and_o partly_o to_o reprove_v the_o uncharitableness_n of_o the_o jew_n who_o positive_o exclude_v all_o the_o rest_n of_o mankind_n beside_o themselves_o from_o all_o hope_n of_o salvation_n a_o odious_a temper_n which_o to_o the_o infinite_a scandal_n of_o the_o christian_a name_n and_o profession_n have_v prevail_v upon_o some_o christian_n to_o that_o notorious_a degree_n as_o not_o only_o to_o shut_v out_o all_o the_o reform_a part_n of_o the_o western_a church_n almost_o equal_a in_o number_n to_o themselves_o from_o all_o hope_n of_o salvation_n under_o the_o notion_n of_o heretic_n but_o likewise_o to_o unchurch_v all_o the_o other_o church_n of_o the_o christian_a world_n which_o be_v of_o much_o great_a extent_n and_o number_n than_o themselves_o that_o do_v not_o own_o subjection_n to_o the_o bishop_n of_o rome_n and_o this_o they_o do_v by_o declare_v it_o to_o be_v of_o necessity_n to_o salvation_n for_o every_o creature_n to_o be_v subject_a to_o the_o roman_a bishop_n and_o this_o supremacy_n of_o the_o bishop_n of_o rome_n over_o all_o christian_a church_n bellarmin_n call_v the_o sum_n of_o the_o christian_a religion_n so_o that_o the_o roman_a communion_n be_v plain_o found_v in_o schism_n that_o be_v in_o the_o most_o unchristian_a and_o uncharitable_a principle_n that_o can_v be_v namely_o that_o they_o be_v the_o only_a true_a church_n of_o christ_n out_o of_o which_o none_o can_v be_v save_v which_o be_v the_o very_a schism_n of_o the_o donatist_n and_o in_o this_o they_o be_v so_o positive_a that_o the_o learned_a man_n of_o that_o church_n in_o their_o dispute_n and_o writing_n be_v much_o more_o inclinable_a to_o believe_v the_o salvation_n of_o heathen_n to_o be_v possible_a than_o of_o any_o of_o those_o christian_n who_o they_o be_v please_v to_o call_v heretic_n the_o faith_n of_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n be_v certain_o none_o of_o the_o best_a but_o of_o one_o of_o the_o great_a and_o most_o essential_a virtue_n of_o the_o christian_a religion_n i_o mean_v charity_n i_o doubt_v they_o have_v the_o least_o share_n of_o any_o christian_a church_n this_o day_n in_o the_o world_n second_o i_o observe_v not_o from_o any_o particular_a circumstance_n but_o from_o the_o main_a scope_n and_o design_n of_o this_o parable_n how_o very_o apt_a a_o great_a part_n of_o christian_n be_v to_o neglect_v this_o great_a concernment_n of_o their_o soul_n viz._n a_o careful_a and_o due_a preparation_n for_o another_o world_n and_o how_o willing_a they_o be_v to_o deceive_v themselves_o in_o this_o matter_n
son_n of_o god_n and_o of_o the_o saviour_n of_o the_o world_n and_o if_o we_o can_v do_v so_o it_o be_v not_o certain_a that_o we_o shall_v behave_v ourselves_o towards_o he_o so_o well_o as_o the_o penitent_a thief_n do_v and_o make_v so_o very_o good_a a_o end_n of_o so_o very_o bad_a a_o life_n and_o the_o parable_n in_o the_o text_n be_v so_o far_o from_o give_v any_o encouragement_n to_o a_o deathbed_n repentance_n and_o preparation_n that_o it_o rather_o represent_v their_o case_n as_o desperate_a who_o put_v off_o their_o preparation_n to_o that_o time_n how_o ineffectual_a all_o that_o the_o foolish_a virgin_n can_v do_v at_o that_o time_n do_v in_o the_o conclusion_n prove_v be_v set_v forth_o to_o we_o at_o large_a in_o the_o parable_n 12._o they_o want_v oil_n but_o can_v neither_o borrow_v nor_o buy_v it_o they_o will_v then_o fain_o have_v have_v it_o and_o run_v about_o to_o get_v it_o but_o it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v obtain_v neither_o by_o entreaty_n nor_o for_o money_n first_o they_o apply_v themselves_o to_o the_o wise_a virgin_n for_o a_o share_n in_o the_o overplus_n of_o their_o grace_n and_o virtue_n 8._o the_o foolish_a say_v unto_o the_o wise_a give_v we_o of_o your_o oil_n for_o our_o lamp_n be_v go_v out_o but_o the_o wise_a answer_v not_o so_o lest_o there_o be_v not_o enough_o for_o we_o and_o you_o the_o wise_a virgin_n it_o seem_v know_v of_o none_o they_o have_v to_o spare_v and_o then_o they_o be_v represent_v as_o ironical_o send_v the_o foolish_a virgin_n to_o some_o famous_a market_n where_o this_o oil_n be_v pretend_v to_o be_v sell_v go_v you_o rather_o to_o they_o that_o sell_v and_o buy_v for_o yourselves_o 9_o and_o as_o die_v and_o desperate_a person_n be_v apt_a to_o catch_v at_o every_o twig_n and_o when_o they_o can_v see_v no_o hope_n of_o be_v save_v be_v apt_a to_o believe_v every_o one_o that_o will_v give_v they_o any_o so_o these_o foolish_a virgin_n follow_v the_o advice_n 10._o and_o whilst_o they_o go_v to_o buy_v the_o bridegroom_n come_v and_o they_o that_o be_v ready_a go_v in_o with_o he_o to_o the_o marriage_n and_o the_o door_n be_v shut_v and_o afterwards_o come_v also_o the_o other_o virgin_n say_v lord_n lord_n open_a to_o we_o but_o he_o answer_v and_o say_v very_o i_o say_v unto_o you_o i_o know_v you_o not_o you_o see_v how_o little_a or_o rather_o no_o encouragement_n at_o all_o there_o be_v from_o any_o the_o least_o circumstance_n in_o this_o parable_n for_o those_o who_o have_v delay_v their_o preparation_n for_o another_o world_n till_o they_o be_v overtake_v by_o death_n or_o judgement_n to_o hope_v by_o any_o thing_n that_o they_o can_v then_o do_v by_o any_o importunity_n which_o they_o can_v then_o use_v to_o gain_v admission_n into_o heaven_n let_v those_o consider_v this_o with_o fear_n and_o tremble_a who_o forget_v god_n and_o neglect_n religion_n all_o their_o life-time_n and_o yet_o feed_v themselves_o with_o vain_a hope_n by_o some_o device_n or_o other_o to_o be_v admit_v into_o heaven_n at_o last_o five_o i_o observe_v that_o there_o be_v no_o such_o thing_n as_o work_n of_o super-erogation_n that_o be_v that_o no_o man_n can_v do_v more_o than_o needs_o and_o than_o be_v his_o duty_n to_o do_v by_o way_n of_o preparation_n for_o another_o world_n 8._o for_o when_o the_o foolish_a virgin_n will_v have_v beg_v of_o the_o wise_a some_o oil_n for_o their_o lamp_n the_o wise_a answer_v not_o so_o lest_o there_o be_v not_o enough_o for_o we_o and_o you_o 9_o it_o be_v only_o the_o foolish_a virgin_n that_o in_o the_o time_n of_o their_o extremity_n and_o when_o they_o be_v conscious_a that_o they_o want_v that_o which_o be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o qualify_v they_o for_o admission_n into_o heaven_n who_o have_v any_o they_o have_v to_o spare_v but_o suppose_v all_o that_o they_o have_v do_v or_o can_v possible_o do_v to_o be_v little_a enough_o to_o qualify_v they_o for_o the_o glorious_a reward_n of_o himself_o but_o you_o when_o you_o have_v do_v all_o say_v we_o be_v unprofitable_a servant_n and_o have_v do_v nothing_o but_o what_o be_v our_o duty_n to_o do_v and_o yet_o this_o conceit_n of_o the_o foolish_a virgin_n as_o absurd_a as_o it_o be_v have_v be_v take_v up_o in_o good_a earnest_n by_o a_o grave_a matron_n who_o give_v out_o herself_o to_o be_v the_o mother_n and_o mistress_n of_o all_o church_n and_o the_o only_o infallible_a oracle_n of_o truth_n i_o mean_v the_o church_n of_o rome_n who_o avow_a doctrine_n it_o be_v that_o there_o be_v some_o person_n so_o excellent_o it_o have_v almost_o quite_o lose_v its_o true_a virtue_n and_o efficacy_n upon_o the_o heart_n and_o life_n of_o man_n and_o instead_o of_o the_o real_a fruit_n of_o goodness_n and_o righteousness_n it_o produce_v little_a else_o but_o superstition_n and_o folly_n or_o if_o it_o produce_v any_o real_a virtue_n yet_o even_o the_o virtue_n of_o those_o virtue_n be_v in_o a_o great_a measure_n do_v and_o what_o a_o sad_a confusion_n and_o hurry_n they_o be_v in_o we_o may_v see_v vers._n 6_o 7_o 8_o 9_o and_o at_o midnight_n there_o be_v a_o cry_n make_v behold_v the_o bridegroom_n come_v go_v you_o out_o to_o meet_v he_o at_o midnight_n the_o most_o dismal_a and_o unseasonable_a time_n of_o all_o other_o then_o all_o those_o virgin_n arise_v and_o trim_v their_o lamp_n and_o the_o foolish_a say_v unto_o the_o wise_a give_v we_o of_o your_o oil_n for_o our_o lamp_n be_v go_v out_o but_o the_o wise_a ans●ered_v not_o so_o lest_o there_o be_v not_o enough_o for_o we_o and_o you_o but_o go_v you_o rather_o to_o they_o that_o sell_v and_o buy_v for_o yourselves_o and_o how_o ineffectual_a all_o that_o they_o can_v do_v at_o that_o time_n prove_v to_o be_v we_o find_v verse_n 10_o 11_o 12_o and_o whilst_o they_o go_v to_o buy_v the_o bridegroom_n come_v and_o they_o that_o be_v ready_a
and_o to_o depend_v upon_o any_o thing_n else_o how_o groundless_a and_o unreasonable_a soever_o rather_o than_o to_o take_v the_o pain_n to_o be_v real_o good_a and_o fit_a for_o heaven_n and_o this_o be_v in_o a_o very_a lively_a manner_n represent_v to_o we_o in_o the_o description_n of_o the_o foolish_a virgin_n who_o have_v provide_v no_o supply_n of_o oil_n in_o their_o vessel_n and_o when_o the_o bridegroom_n be_v come_v will_v have_v furnish_v themselves_o by_o borrow_v or_o buy_v of_o other_o vers._n 8_o 9_o 10._o they_o content_v themselves_o with_o have_v their_o lamp_n light_v at_o their_o first_o set_v out_o to_o meet_v the_o bridegroom_n that_o be_v with_o their_o be_v admit_v into_o the_o profession_n of_o christianity_n by_o baptism_n but_o either_o be_v not_o steadfast_a in_o this_o profession_n or_o be_v not_o careful_a to_o adorn_v it_o with_o the_o grace_n and_o virtue_n of_o a_o good_a life_n and_o the_o true_a reason_n why_o man_n be_v so_o very_o apt_a to_o deceive_v themselves_o in_o this_o matter_n and_o be_v so_o hardly_o bring_v to_o those_o thing_n wherein_o religion_n main_o consist_v i_o mean_v the_o fruit_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o the_o practice_n of_o real_a goodness_n i_o say_v the_o true_a reason_n of_o this_o be_v because_o they_o be_v extreme_o desirous_a to_o reconcile_v if_o it_o be_v possible_a the_o hope_n of_o eternal_a happiness_n in_o another_o world_n with_o a_o liberty_n to_o live_v as_o they_o list_v in_o this_o present_a world_n they_o be_v loath_a to_o be_v at_o the_o trouble_n and_o drudgery_n of_o mortify_v their_o lust_n and_o govern_v their_o passion_n and_o bridle_v their_o tongue_n and_o practise_v all_o those_o duty_n which_o be_v comprehend_v in_o those_o two_o great_a commandment_n of_o the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o of_o our_o neighbour_n they_o will_v fain_o gain_v the_o favour_n of_o god_n and_o make_v their_o call_n and_o election_n sure_a by_o some_o easy_a way_n than_o by_o give_v all_o diligence_n to_o add_v to_o their_o faith_n and_o knowledge_n the_o grace_n and_o virtue_n of_o a_o good_a life_n for_o the_o plain_a truth_n of_o the_o matter_n be_v man_n have_v rather_o that_o religion_n shall_v be_v any_o thing_n than_o what_o indeed_o it_o be_v viz._n the_o thwart_n and_o cross_v of_o their_o vicious_a inclination_n the_o cure_n of_o their_o evil_a and_o corrupt_a affection_n the_o due_a care_n and_o government_n of_o their_o unruly_a appetite_n and_o passion_n the_o sincere_a endeavour_n and_o the_o constant_a practice_n of_o all_o holiness_n and_o virtue_n in_o their_o life_n and_o therefore_o they_o have_v much_o rather_o have_v something_o that_o may_v handsome_o palliate_v and_o excuse_v their_o evil_a inclination_n and_o practice_n than_o to_o be_v oblige_v to_o retrench_v and_o renounce_v they_o and_o rather_o than_o amend_v and_o reform_v their_o wicked_a life_n they_o will_v be_v content_v to_o make_v a_o honourable_a amends_o and_o compensation_n to_o almighty_a god_n in_o some_o other_o way_n this_o have_v be_v the_o way_n and_o folly_n of_o mankind_n in_o all_o age_n to_o defeat_v the_o great_a end_n and_o design_n of_o religion_n and_o to_o thrust_v it_o by_o by_o substitute_v something_o else_o in_o the_o place_n of_o it_o which_o as_o they_o think_v may_v serve_v the_o turn_n as_o well_o have_v the_o appearance_n of_o as_o much_o devotion_n and_o respect_n towards_o god_n and_o real_o cost_v they_o more_o money_n and_o pain_n than_o that_o which_o god_n require_v of_o they_o man_n have_v ever_o be_v apt_a thus_o to_o impose_v upon_o themselves_o and_o to_o please_v themselves_o with_o a_o conceit_n of_o please_a god_n full_a as_o well_o or_o better_o by_o some_o other_o way_n than_o that_o which_o he_o have_v prescribe_v and_o appoint_v for_o they_o by_o this_o mean_n and_o upon_o this_o false_a principle_n religion_n have_v ever_o be_v apt_a to_o degenerate_a both_o among_o jew_n and_o christian_n into_o external_a and_o little_a observance_n and_o into_o a_o great_a zeal_n for_o lesser_a thing_n with_o a_o total_a neglect_n of_o the_o great_a and_o weighty_a matter_n of_o religion_n and_o in_o a_o word_n into_o infinite_a superstition_n of_o one_o kind_n or_o other_o and_o a_o arrogant_a conceit_n of_o the_o extraordinary_a righteousness_n and_o merit_n of_o these_o thing_n in_o which_o some_o have_v proceed_v to_o that_o height_n as_o if_o they_o can_v drive_v a_o strict_a bargain_n with_o god_n for_o eternal_a life_n and_o happiness_n and_o have_v treat_v he_o in_o so_o insolent_a a_o manner_n by_o their_o doctrine_n of_o the_o merit_n of_o their_o devotion_n and_o good_a work_n as_o if_o god_n be_v as_o much_o behold_v to_o they_o for_o their_o service_n and_o obedience_n as_o they_o be_v to_o he_o for_o the_o reward_n of_o they_o which_o they_o be_v not_o afraid_a to_o say_v they_o may_v challenge_v at_o god_n hand_n as_o of_o right_a and_o justice_n belong_v to_o they_o nay_o so_o far_o have_v they_o carry_v this_o doctrine_n in_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n as_o not_o only_o to_o pretend_v to_o merit_v eternal_a life_n for_o themselves_o but_o likewise_o to_o do_v a_o great_a deal_n more_o for_o the_o benefit_n and_o advantage_n of_o other_o who_o have_v not_o righteousness_n and_o goodness_n enough_o of_o their_o own_o which_o be_v the_o silly_a conceit_n of_o the_o foolish_a virgin_n here_o in_o the_o parable_n as_o i_o shall_v have_v occasion_n to_o show_v more_o full_o by_o and_o by_o and_o it_o be_v no_o great_a wonder_n that_o such_o easy_a way_n of_o religion_n and_o please_a god_n be_v very_o grateful_a to_o the_o corrupt_a nature_n of_o man_n and_o that_o man_n who_o be_v resolve_v to_o continue_v in_o a_o evil_a course_n be_v glad_a to_o be_v of_o a_o church_n which_o will_v assure_v salvation_n to_o man_n upon_o such_o term_n the_o great_a difficulty_n be_v for_o man_n to_o believe_v that_o thing_n which_o be_v so_o apparent_o absurd_a and_o unreasonable_a can_v be_v true_a and_o to_o persuade_v themselves_o that_o they_o can_v impose_v upon_o god_n by_o such_o pretence_n of_o service_n and_o obedience_n as_o no_o wise_a prince_n or_o father_n upon_o earth_n be_v to_o be_v delude_v withal_o by_o his_o subject_n or_o child_n we_o ought_v to_o have_v worthy_a thought_n of_o god_n and_o to_o consider_v that_o he_o be_v a_o great_a king_n and_o will_v be_v obey_v and_o observe_v by_o his_o creature_n in_o his_o own_o way_n and_o make_v they_o happy_a upon_o his_o own_o term_n and_o that_o obedience_n to_o what_o he_o command_v be_v better_a and_o more_o acceptable_a to_o he_o than_o any_o other_o sacrifice_n that_o we_o can_v offer_v which_o he_o have_v not_o require_v at_o our_o hand_n and_o likewise_o that_o he_o be_v infinite_o wise_a and_o good_a and_o therefore_o that_o the_o law_n which_o he_o have_v give_v we_o to_o live_v by_o be_v much_o more_o likely_a and_o certain_a mean_n of_o our_o happiness_n than_o any_o invention_n and_o device_n of_o our_o own_o three_o i_o observe_v that_o even_o the_o better_a and_o more_o considerate_a sort_n of_o christian_n be_v not_o so_o careful_a and_o watchful_a as_o they_o ought_v to_o prepare_v themselves_o for_o death_n and_o judgement_n whilst_o the_o bridegroom_n tarry_v they_o all_o slumber_v and_o sleep_v even_o the_o disciple_n of_o our_o saviour_n whilst_o he_o be_v yet_o personal_o present_a with_o they_o and_o after_o a_o particular_a charge_n give_v they_o from_o his_o own_o mouth_n watch_n and_o pray_v lest_o you_o enter_v into_o temptation_n yet_o do_v not_o keep_v that_o guard_n upon_o themselves_o as_o to_o watch_v with_o he_o for_o one_o hour_n in_o many_o thing_n say_v st._n james_n we_o offend_v all_o even_o the_o best_a of_o we_o and_o who_o be_v there_o that_o do_v not_o some_o time_n or_o other_o remit_v of_o his_o vigilancy_n and_o care_n so_o as_o to_o give_v the_o devil_n a_o advantage_n and_o to_o lie_v open_a to_o temptation_n for_o want_v of_o a_o continual_a guard_n upon_o himself_o but_o then_o the_o difference_n between_o the_o wise_a and_o foolish_a virgin_n be_v this_o that_o though_o they_o both_o sleep_v yet_o the_o wise_a do_v not_o let_v their_o lamp_n go_v out_o they_o neither_o quit_v their_o profession_n nor_o do_v they_o extinguish_v it_o by_o a_o bad_a life_n and_o though_o when_o the_o bridegroom_n come_v sudden_o upon_o they_o they_o be_v not_o so_o actual_o prepare_v to_o meet_v he_o by_o a_o continual_a vigilancy_n yet_o they_o be_v habitual_o prepare_v by_o the_o good_a disposition_n of_o their_o mind_n and_o the_o general_a course_n of_o a_o holy_a life_n their_o lamp_n may_v burn_v dim_a for_o want_v of_o continual_a trim_n but_o they_o have_v oil_n in_o their_o vessel_n to_o supply_v their_o lamp_n which_o the_o foolish_a virgin_n have_v take_v no_o care_n to_o provide_v
